Perfectly stated. This is about nostalgia, fun. Aside from that, no investment is guaranteed, so if you insist on toys as your retirement than it's just as hazardous as any.

I recently bought the green pop up lightsaber for my R2D2 figure. It was a repro. The original would of cost around $40 for a piece of plastic around half an inch. The repro cost me $3 and looks great. I have never found an issue with repro especially when it can complete your collection. I'll never sell my collection so for me (also not a rich man) It works great. Investment is not why I collect. The fun and nostalgia is why I collect.

You hit the nail on the head with so many points here. The one I love best is to collect because you love the toys, not because you think they will be valuable. Having fun enjoying the nostalgia of actually having these figures because of the memories. Star Wars was a big part of my childhood and I still love it today.

I myself have a toy and video game collection worth £20,000+ but the fun i have as i continue to collect and the memories that are linked to so many of the items i have in my collection are worth their weight in gold. I honestly don't understand some collector's anger toward reproduction or retro items. Even Steve Sansweet… the king of Star Wars collecting and owner of Rancho Obi-Wan... has at least one repro item in his collection. It's a carded Glasslite Vlix, and it's pictured and discussed in his 1000 Collectibles book. I wonder if the fanatic zealots who rage against repros would criticize him. Certainly not to his face, they wouldn't.

Thanks again for another super video. These days there seem to be very few collectors who actually understand what it is to be a collector. Like you, I collect for love of toys, not love of money. I've been doing it for decades, and it is just as enjoyable now as it was when I started. You never grow tired of doing what you love.
I only recently learned of the Retro Star Wars figures, I haven't seen them in stores yet. I also cannot understand why people would be upset by this. It's just plain dumb. Instead of being upset over the costs of original figures going up or down, people should be thankful that Hasbro thinks enough of its older Star Wars fans to do this. I applaud Hasbro for filling the toy aisles with nostalgic action figures and packaging- something that has been absent from stores for too long. That is why I was happy that Mego returned recently. The younger generation now gets an idea of what it was like for us when we were that age.
My 19-year-old niece is quite familiar with 1970's television shows and toys, because I have opened up that world to her. She tells me that it looks like a fascinating era to have lived in, and I tell her that it was. I'm still living there! My 11-year-old nephew actually prefers my old toys to his own. He comes to my house almost every day, grabs some of my action figures, an starts playing with them. After all, that's what action figures were made for. I'm not one of those collectors who must have everything mint in box. I think that defeats the whole purpose of toy collecting, and it deprives us of the joy of handling the toy we spent so much money on. I recently bought the Mego Micronauts Rocket Tubes set (on Ebay), and they enjoyed my demonstration. It's complete with the original box and instructions, and works perfectly.
I've also bought my niece and nephew some of the new Mego and Figures Toy Company super heroes. Their shelves now have Mego toys just like their uncle's.

Well said. There will always be elitist collectors out there who are more concerned about the status of owning something others cannot. Hi, I totally agree with. I collect vintage Star Wars. As a kid my mum could not afford to buy me what I wanted, so made do with what I got.
I collect now because of the nostalgia feeling I get owning the figures. I find a lot of snobbery about all the collecting nowadays..

People fretting about this stuff should talk to a Transformers collector. Hasbro/Takara have been reissuing the original G1 figures since the early 2000's. And people back then said the same thing: "It will drive down the price of the originals!!"
And they were right, it did. But not by a huge amount. Now 19 years later, reissues have become a way of life in the TF fandom. And now there are people who are dedicated vintage collectors, and those who just want the figure they had when they were a kid.
Like you said, it ultimately opened up the hobby to more fans, and now you can get certain figures without going into debt to get them.

Fantastic! Thank you for sharing! I feel the same way. Collecting Star Wars is fun for me and not about investing. I'm grateful for reproduction weapons for vintage Kenner figures and now I have the luxury of "replenishing" my vintage figures from when I was 8-10 years old. Just to share, I was 7 when Star Wars first came out in 1977. For the holidays in 1977 and my birthday, January, 1978, there were no figures. But my Dad bought me a black t-shirt with a Darth Vader iron on on front and R2 and C-3P0 on back. I was thrilled! He also bought the Star Wars soundtrack which contained a beautiful Star Wars poster that I put on my bedroom wall. And I remember vividly seeing Star Wars action figures for the first time in a mall in the summer of 1978. I bought Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and 2 Storm Troopers. One month later, I bough a Luke Skywalker in K-mart. Each figure was US $1.99, a dream for an 8 year old boy. My grandfather had given my sisters and I about $10 each to buy toys at that time. My memory and happiness then and now are priceless. Most Sincerely, Matt

Smith Lord Creations here. 😉, Great video bro, really appreciate your kind words and honest words,... I do all this for the love of Star Wars, i do this at the best of my ability so a lot of fans who can't afford or simply can't justify the prices of originals can get a chance to get my figures.
So when I do get hate, it does get me sometimes, but only because it is wrong what is said, but then when I get such good feedback off my customers and love the quality of the figures it makes it all worth while 100%, I love the the fact I can give fans figures they could never get, not because I wanna make money... If my missus knew how much money I have put into this, they'd be hell on lol...
Again just want to say we all know the debate and devide between collectors is down to money and investment, and i HATE that, Star Wars means more to me than money, it takes me back to when I was a kid, and unbelievable memories that no one can take that away.
Keep up the good work bro, really great video and appreciate the mention about me.

As a fellow collector i have no problem with reproductions and i fully agree with your points. Im currently rebuilding my childhood MOTU collection and i was not about to pay $80+ for the Sorceress little white plastic staff so i went with a reproduction. What is a bummer is how hard these new Star Wars figures are to get already. Sold out since day one on the Target site and going for 2X the cost or more on eBay. I was 5 in 1984 and all i ever had was 4 Ewok figures (I don't know why) and as an adult i have never really had enough passion to spend the asking prices and build a vintage Star Wars figure collation. So im really excited about this Retro Collection because i can now have a small collection of "vintage" Star Wars figures for about $60. I just hope its not like the Mego/Target exclusives and i don't have to spend more then hay are worth on eBay.

I agree with you Tony 100%! I do not see anything wrong with the remakes! They are cool. If I see any I am buying them for the kids. I am really eager to see them in hand.😁
Also Tony you are a super great guy to send Michael Mercy that awesome box of stuff. I actually just finished that unboxing video from him for the second time! Tony you really outdid ourself with all that amazing stuff! The carded Leatherneck Joe would have been great just by itself!!!👍👍👍
Thanks for your videos I really enjoy them.

Very well put. If you are into repro great. If you aren’t that’s great too. There is room for everyone and no one should be made to feel unwelcome or lesser for being in either camp. Life is too short and getting bent out of shape over repro toys isn’t worth it.
I enjoyed your talk with Michael Mercy and sending the gift box was very cool. The sign of a true gentleman.
Keep up the great work! Looking forward to what comes next!

Tony, you set the standard for how each and every one of us should interact within the toy collecting community - gracious and articulate, passionate and compassionate, and I agree fully with everything you said. I don't understand the "collection as investment" mentality, and in my opinion - a thing is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. With any investment, as you illustrated, prices will fluctuate. The majority of us are not wealthy, and we seek these things out primarily for our own pleasure. When it becomes something that you use as an excuse to treat others cruelly or unkindly, you probably need to reassess more than just your reasons for being an adult toy collector.

I have dealt so much with the "investors" that I have a lot of trouble caring that their "investment" in old toys is about to be ruined. They're the idiots that thought that mass-produced toys were going to provide for...whatever they thought they would provide for.

Don't worry same cancer is in the video game collecting scene.... maybe worse there because there paying for 1's and zero's that can be copied... i realised that kids my age hold some nostalgic value that can convert into a profit but... kids born past this era couldnt give a toss ... so in essense you have a small window to sell your stuff before it has no value.
I was lucky i sold all my collection at peak fanatical collecting made a ton of cash maybe tripled or quadrupled what i spent on my games then spent a few hundred on rom carts and re downloaded the games i just sold 😂 but my bank account waa phat.
I just collected what i enjoyed seen there was a chance to make a quick quid and not lose any games and i gained a lot of space in my house

Agree 100% Tony, I’m a collector who collects simply for my love of all things Star Wars and the nostalgia and memories of my childhood, all my vintage Star Wars figures are genuine, but I have completed them with repro accessories, your attitude towards collecting is spot on, you’ve actually inspired me to start my own channel, keep up the good work my friend 👍

Well met. The problem we all face are; pawn shops, scalpers, pickers, professional collectors and hoarders etc. who thieve, deceive, drive prices up and/or devalue in a deliberate sense for personal gain. The other issue are companies who like to money grab using terms such as "Deluxe", "limited edition", "anniversary", "reissue" and "birthday" etc. to cash in on a market that already has the above arseholes in it, making it worse.

Well said Sir, throughly enjoyed your thoughts. I love collecting what means a lot to me too and try not to fall into the trap of getting figures for the sake of it just because I should to complete a range or wave... ie some last 17 Star Wars figures. I also know my 4yr old has his eyes on all of it and it’ll give me great pleasure to pass it on to him in time. Just enjoy your toys the way they should and do not feel pressurised. Great honest review, thank you for sharing 👍🏻

There a significant amount of identifiers on the cards to stop them being sold as originals. They'll be markings on the figures themselves. The proof will be in the sales. They'll sell or they won't. This range will keep the original films alive for collector children by investing in these repo ranges. Wonderful that children can visualise with tangible toys to.go with the films.

Been collecting vintage SW figures for several years now, anything that brings the price of them down sounds good to me. There's more than one type of collector out there, most of the people I know that collect these things do so because they mean something to them, they don't do it for profit. I would be happy if they reproduced all of them.

I have the whole wave including Tarkin. The biggest differences between the retro collection and the vintage ones is that they are glossy, are slightly shorter and the printing is slightly different. I think Hasbro needs to stop releasing the original figures and make characters that never got made like what they did with Tarkin, for example a Vader with a removable helmet or a slave Leia.

I don't actually think the 40th Action Man reproductions actually did any harm to the prices anyway, i think they actually helped maintain the interest if anything, even now people are hauling boxes of Action Men out from 40+ years of storage, those "rare" items get less an less so as word catches on that these items are valuable, even so, as a bit of an Action Man "wheeler dealer" myself, ive not seen much movement in price since 2010 and recently ive sold and seen some of the rarer uniforms sell for a fair whack more than a few years back.

I just watched and posted on Michael's Unboxing video that was an incredible gesture and speaks to your character Tony. To your point I agree investors are not collectors and vice versa. True collectors buy for nostalgia to reminisce about childhood Christmas's and play days past. There's a fine line between buying toys as an investment and scalping. That being gathering 'Hot Items' or Chase figures simply to triple the price and take advantage of collectors trying to complete a set or series. As for toy companies like Hasbro releasing Anniversary sets of original figures and vehicles like Star Wars I understand the frustration collectors with Vintage items feel. A lot of time and money's been invested plus they've held on to the items for decades in hopes of passing down the collection to loved ones. But as you say prices fluctuate and an original will always be an original and more desirable to true enthusiasts so pointless to fret about re-releases. We have to remember toy companies like Hasbro are in business to make money and they reproduce nostalgic toys not just for collectors but to introduce them to a WHOLE NEW GENERATION to keep the revenue flowing.

If these Retro Collection figures make their way into a child's hands, I'd be surprised. That is the sad fact here, Kenner Star Wars is so beloved, and by so many more right now, but if the next generation has no access, that is a shame. If these new figures are used as forgeries that's also a shame, but not news to any collecting community. I accept that there are good and bad people in the collecting community and stay clear of any negativity. That's why I watch your channel. Looks like you're really struggling with this one. For what it's worth, I think you spoke very wisely in this one. Thanks for all you do for the community.

Great points all around Tony. I do feel like some people tend to forget why others collect in the first place. I agree with you as well as others here, personally my collection isn't because it's worth money, it's because they are things I love and grew up with. My most formative years of my life had a lot of great properties come into existence, and while yes a few things I have might be rare, it's not about monetary worth, it's about sentimental worth as well as the fun of it all.
