I was young and used to blindly support everyone on the right. I see things clearly as I've grown older. As for celebrities, I still don't care about their politics. They can have their opinions. I have mine. I consider myself a liberal with rational views and ready to engage in healthy conversations with people with differing opinions. My knowledge is growing everyday and my views of the world, along with it.

Who ever created this video is aware that, just because they are celebrities doesn't mean they shouldn't have opinions. They just have a bigger voice than some of us smaller people in the world. This is a hard one for me. I believe in the first amendment, and I think celebrities have a right to express themselves. That being said, I don't think athletes, musicians, actors, should turn their sports press conference, or concerts, or movie releases into political stages. People are there to consume a product, not to talk about politics. I also believe, if you have millions of followers, especially a lot of impressionable young people, it is your responsibility to be educated on whatever subject you are speaking out on.

I"m with you, I don't think anyone is trying to "silence" them. I just feel conflicted on celebrities lobbying on political issues that they are not educated in, and or lobbying in general during an event that has nothing to do with politics. Also knowing that so many people idolize them (for better or worse), I wish they would be more educated on matters they choose to lobby for. But I am with you, I don't think they should be silenced.

There is a distinction between a famous political person, and a famous celebrity. If you became famous because you are a singer or actor, and you go around preaching political stuff, you are using your fame as a tool to manipulate your fans to think like you. But if you are somebody like Ben Shapiro, who is famous BECAUSE of his political speeches, then that is fine. People watch him to see politics. If he tried to use his fame in that arena to sell calypso music albums, that would be the same kind of thing, because he's using his fame to push something his fans don't want.

I agree. Clearly Prager cares since he made this video. Also, this video is quite hypocritical. Prager wouldn't have made it if celebrity opinions were generally more conservative. What he really means is "we don't care what you think....if you disagree with me", which is a double-standard considering Prager has made videos stating that free speech shouldn't offend you. Celebrities have the right to state their opinions just like everybody else. I do 100% agree that they shouldn't preach politics when entertaining fans (like at rock concerts), but when off the job, they have the right to say what they want like every other American. I may disagree with them, but I respect their opinions and rights to state them. There are times when they go too far (Kathy Griffin, Johnny Depp, Eminem), but overall, as long as they keep it civil, then I have no problem at all with celebrities' political views. Part of the complaint is not that celebrities should not express their opinions, but that they abuse their privilege of a public platform such as awards ceremonies to express those opinions. People don't tune into the Oscars or Grammies to get a political education. They are interested in the art. Unfortunately, even the art has been subverted by political activism gone off the rails.

I cared about various artists' ideas on film-making, not about trans-gender, gay-rights, racism, or Israeli/Palistinian relations. It was annoying as far back as the early '70's when a Native American woman accepted Marlon Brando's award and made a speech about the plight of Native Americans, which had nothing to do with acting in The Godfather, or Venessa Redgrave's rant about Israel or something. Paddy Cheyefsky put her and all the other political opportunists in their place when he presented the 1978 screenwriting award. He graciously and briefly accepted his screenwriting award for Network the year before. Network was somewhat of a social/political statement, but he had nothing to say about that. It had already been stated in the movie. The Oscars were never really relevant to begin with. They were created as a promotional scheme to improve audience awareness and interest in the movie business as attendance began to diminish. Most awards are just PR stunts. Its Hollywood honoring itself and inviting the audience in for a glimpse of their idols. The audience doesn't get to vote - they already voted at the box-office where it really matters to Hollywood. They make a pretense of suggesting the Academy's judgement is most relevant to the art, yet they often vote for the most controversial and politically correct movies, not the most artistic and well produced movies.
Some celebrities have actual opinions, some don't and are just saying things to stay popular in the public eye. That's why no one should put you much stock into what most celebrities have to say on most issues.

This is a hard one for me. I believe in the first amendment, and I think celebrities have a right to express themselves. That being said, I don't think athletes, musicians, actors, should turn their sports press conference, or concerts, or movie releases into political stages. People are there to consume a product, not to talk about politics.
I also believe, if you have millions of followers, especially a lot of impressionable young people, it is your responsibility to be educated on whatever subject you are speaking out on.

I"m with you, I don't think anyone is trying to "silence" them. I just feel conflicted on celebrities lobbying on political issues that they are not educated in, and or lobbying in general during an event that has nothing to do with politics. Also knowing that so many people idolize them (for better or worse), I wish they would be more educated on matters they choose to lobby for. But I am with you, I don't think they should be silenced.

There is a distinction between a famous political person, and a famous celebrity. If you became famous because you are a singer or actor, and you go around preaching political stuff, you are using your fame as a tool to manipulate your fans to think like you. But if you are somebody like Ben Shapiro, who is famous BECAUSE of his political speeches, then that is fine. People watch him to see politics. If he tried to use his fame in that arena to sell calypso music albums, that would be the same kind of thing, because he's using his fame to push something his fans don't want.

I agree. Clearly Prager cares since he made this video. Also, this video is quite hypocritical. Prager wouldn't have made it if celebrity opinions were generally more conservative. What he really means is "we don't care what you think....if you disagree with me", which is a double-standard considering Prager has made videos stating that free speech shouldn't offend you. Celebrities have the right to state their opinions just like everybody else. I do 100% agree that they shouldn't preach politics when entertaining fans (like at rock concerts), but when off the job, they have the right to say what they want like every other American. I may disagree with them, but I respect their opinions and rights to state them. There are times when they go too far (Kathy Griffin, Johnny Depp, Eminem), but overall, as long as they keep it civil, then I have no problem at all with celebrities' political views. Part of the complaint is not that celebrities should not express their opinions, but that they abuse their privilege of a public platform such as awards ceremonies to express those opinions. I cared about various artists' ideas on film-making, not about trans-gender, gay-rights, racism, or Israeli/Palistinian relations. It was annoying as far back as the early '70's when a Native American woman accepted Marlon Brando's award and made a speech about the plight of Native Americans, which had nothing to do with acting in The Godfather, or Venessa Redgrave's rant about Israel or something. Paddy Cheyefsky put her and all the other political opportunists in their place when he presented the 1978 screenwriting award. He graciously and briefly accepted his screenwriting award for Network the year before. Network was somewhat of a social/political statement, but he had nothing to say about that. It had already been stated in the movie.
The Oscars were never really relevant to begin with. They were created as a promotional scheme to improve audience awareness and interest in the movie business as attendance began to diminish. Most awards are just PR stunts. Its Hollywood honoring itself and inviting the audience in for a glimpse of their idols. The audience doesn't get to vote - they already voted at the box-office where it really matters to Hollywood. They make a pretense of suggesting the Academy's judgement is most relevant to the art, yet they often vote for the most controversial and politically correct movies, not the most artistic and well produced movies.

To assert that nobody cares what their opinions are is just false. The reality is that too many people do care what they think and that’s really the point. Furthermore, they are fully entitled to their opinions and free to express them. Just like all of us are. It’s just unfortunate for many of us that they use their platforms to spew their leftist garbage. We ought to keep coming up with intelligent and thoughtful ways to challenge them, which we are. Candace made some good points, but this video seemed to fall a little short.

She does raise a valid point, I just think it's delivered kind of poorly. The logic gets drowned out by all the salt and sass, which may be off-putting to some people. Needless to say, it's hard to be open-minded when a person acts all condescending and peppers their argument with snide remarks. Again, I agree with the argument, I just think it could've been presented a bit better.

I once had that situation with someone who thinks the FDA and EPA should be abolished. Most of his arguments against my arguments were not proper refutations, instead he'd sometimes repeat that I was "protecting criminals" and was being immature in response to my arguments sometimes. On his last reply, he said he won because he assumes that I'm trying to "take [his] freedom away" and that he "didn't want anything to do with [me]" so he decided to quit responding to my responses. This rage-quit means that he is closed-minded and doesn't want his anti-regulatory stance to be debunked so he decided to resort to something along the lines of _"No! They're corrupt! I don't need to explain to you why, you already know why, but yet you defend them anyway; you're just helping them take away my freedom! I don't want to talk to you anymore!"._
Well, yeah, obviously some people are going to be close-minded with or without snide remarks. I'm just saying there might be people out there who are willing to listen to reason - but if you come at them with salt and sass, they may not be as willing. There has to be a balance, is all I'm saying.

I live in Brazil, and we have here the same behaviour from celebrities. Happy to say: we don't hear them anymore.
