    So I’m 29 working as a medical biller. I decided to make the change and get into genetic counseling. What worries me is that I see a lot of commenters still in high school and none around my age. I’m going back for my associates in either health sciences or psychology then moving on. I’m still hoping that when I apply my age won’t be a factor.

    So glad I found this Video!!!!!! Right now I am planning on returning to school for Prerequisites so I can apply for my Masters in Genetics Counseling the following Fall. I am TRULY passionate about this field and can't wait to pursue it. I discovered Genetics Counseling in 2012 (but had not clue I wanted to pursue that). Last August I talked with one of my Doctor's about my Genetics story (I have a Genetic Syndrome and it was clinically diagnosed in 1996 and it was confirmed in 2012 with Genetics). Also, if one is interested in doing Research while doing there Masters would you suggest mentioning "research interests" or Mentioning you want to work with a specific doctor? I will be starting my Prerequisites in the Fall after being out of school for 12 years. Do you have to do "match" or can you just apply to specific programs (I have a school I TRULY want to attend - Hopkins)?

    • @2134knees
      @2134knees 2 роки тому

      And also I was thinking about Med School...but I am already an "older student" but also talking about my own experiences in August makes me want to go into this field!!!! I also want to gain experience in speaking at Conferences. And I did my Bachelor's in Human Services with a Law Minor in 2010!!!!

    • @amanovershares
      @amanovershares  2 роки тому

      You can definitely mention your research interests during your application. Each school will have a different way of incorporating research into the curriculum so that might be a good way to decide which program(s) to apply to. Every application has to register to the match even if you are only planning on applying to one program. If at all possible, I always recommend applying to a few different programs so the chances of interviewing are higher :)

I haven’t taken any biology, biochem, or stats should I take those in electives or is it a little too late for me to pursue this? @@tabithareid5104 Hi Tabitha! What I have found so far is that a Major in Genetics and/or Biochemistry or even at minimum a Minor in either combined with a Major and/or Minor in Psychology (B.S). if you are a current freshman interested in genetics counseling I would recommend majoring in Psychology (BS) with a minor in genetics, double majoring or Major in Genetics and Minor in Psychology! Had I had this info my freshman year I certainly would have utilized it and even if you do not go into Genetics Counseling these fields both also award you a lot of flexibility as far as career options!

      @@beyonceharris2879 @Tabitha Reid Each program has their own specific prerequisites you will need to complete before enrolment - most have the same general requirements but some have additional (i.e. organic chemistry, calculus etc). So pick your path accordingly so you can complete the courses but also enjoy what you're learning :)

      There are many programs in the US and a few in Canada. All programs can be found on this website: www.gceducation.org/program-directory/

      I worked part-time while in grad school because my program was flexible with our schedule and was structured to allow work-life balance. I have heard that working is very difficult with the expected course load in other programs though! Good question to ask current/past students in your programs of interest :)

      @@parvinderkaur2749 As long as you complete prerequisites, you do not need a certain type of undergrad degree. I didn't write the MCAT as that's only for medical school from my understanding. At the time I was applying, I wrote the GRE for American programs!

    Do genetic counselors work more in the office or the lab? For your GC program what research do you have to do?

    • @amanovershares
      @amanovershares  3 роки тому +2

      I would say there are more genetic counselors that work in a clinical setting and see patients directly. However in the past few years, lab roles have become more prevalent! From my understanding, lab GCs are not the ones performing the tests, and the role more-so has to do with communication and sales. A thesis project is required for all programs but varies quite a bit depending on where you go. My thesis project involves qualitative data collection by interviewing participants. Hope that helps :)

      @j_d2024 3 роки тому +1

      @@amanovershares Yes! This helps a lot. I was curious if GC performed the test in the lab because of their extensive background of genetics. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question and provide insight into being a GC and your research that you are doing for your program.

    hoenstly....in the long run, a genetic counselor will not really be of any use once the science becomes inevitably advanced with genetic markers for diseases using high throughput analysis and AI/machine learning. Good thing I decided to pursue something else

    • @amanovershares
      @amanovershares  3 роки тому +7

      I personally don't think genetic counselors can be replaced with AI due to the actual counseling aspect and personal connection we provide to our patients. We can agree to disagree!
