Hi, I am a Genetic counselling student from India (will be a GC in a few months). Great to discover such a gem of a channel. Subbed! Keep up the good work. We need more GCs on UA-cam.
@@blackxocrossx966 I did my training at Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases, Hyderabad. I am Masters in Biotechnology, so I have a background in Genetics. The entrance test was most basic genetics so it wasn't difficult.
@@suhailch9962 Tysm for replying. Were the MCQs mostly based on genetic disorder and genes associated with it or was it more technical based like PCR, microarray use..etc?
@@blackxocrossx966 It was a bit of both actually. There were MCQs related to basic genetics, genetic diseases and some questions on the diagnostic techniques like PCR, microarray, sequencing etc... Hi Aman, I am thinking about going into genetic counseling, but I also really want to have kids soon. Would you say that genetic counseling is a good career for mothers? Is the workday flexible? Does the career allow for relaxed off time? Thank you!
Hi Cecilia, that's a great question! One of the reasons I was drawn towards this career was the prospect of work-life balance. In my experience, most GCs only work business hours which leaves plenty of time to pursue other activities and have additional priorities (i.e. a family). If you have any more questions, feel free to email me :)
There are also many opportunities for remote and part time work. GCs are always in demand, so if you leave the field but keep up on your CEUs, you can always reenter the field.
Genetic counselors are very in demand and from my experience most people get a job right after graduation (or even before graduating). If you're looking at jobs right now keep in mind that most new grads don't start applying for jobs until the Spring and that we are in a pandemic which impacts hospitals' hiring policies.
Hello! thank you for all the information in your video. May I ask what you majored in for undergrad? Im currently a public health major do you advise I to switch to biology ? or something else? or does it truly not matter what I major in in undergrad as long as I have the pre-reqs for the grad schools. Thank you!
Hi Aman how are you I hope you are well I just want to say from the bottom of my heart thank you so much for making these videos I also want to become a genetic counselor I need a little help with the process would you please help me?
I've heard most people apply to at least 4 programs but that's a very personal decision depending on a lot of factors. If you're interested in what experiences current students have, I highly recommend making a LinkedIn if you haven't already!
Quick question - I have been working with Advocacy Groups for my Genetic Syndrome and have spoken at Conferences. What should I look at for in terms of Advocacy positions?
where did you attend for undergrad ? what did you study in undergrad? did you study abroad? you pay the international rate? how you pay for the program?
I did my undergrad in Canada and my Masters in the US. Different programs have different tuition options so I recommend looking into more specific schools to see how their rates work!
My specific role is clinical so I have zero lab responsibilities. I think it would be rare to come across a GC role that requires you to run lab experiments. There are usually other types of professions for that (such as lab techs).
hi, how many programs did you apply to/ how many would you recommend people apply for? im an undergrad in california and would really like to stay in my state but theres only 5 programs in california and i think not all of them are board certified. thank you so much
This is a very personal decision to make depending on many life factors. If you need to stay in state, then apply to the ones available to you and/or check out options for remote programs! You could always apply to more and end up not ranking them after interviews if you really don't see yourself going there (only if you have the time and $ for those applications).

I am thinking about going for genetic counseling but it seems like there is no jobs or very small number of jobs available. Should I worry about that?

It really doesn't matter as long as you have the required courses, you should be eligible to apply!

I do have another video about genetic counseling, so check that out as well :)
Do you think taking a gap year or two to build your application will be looked down upon?
Great question! Personally I don't think so since it's very common among applicants and I know a lot of my peers did the same :)

How can I find a job ass a genetic counseling assistant ?
Lots of jobs are posted on typical websites like indeed, LinkedIn etc.
is it necessary to have some shadowing experience?
It's recommended if you can get it! If not, look into doing informational interviews with GCs. I talk more about this in part 2 of the video :)
Dobyou have to do MCAT also?
No, genetic counselors are not MDs :)
How can I contact you? please,I need help
