As a violist who has endured all of the jokes, you madame have achieved the most beautiful sound I have ever heard on the instrument. Even the accompaniment portions are well voiced and musical. Every phrase is clear. Bravissima!
Borodin's Nocturne is the most beautiful piece of music ever composed. What a beautiful interpretation from this charming, talented quartet. Bravo, Dover Quartet! Bravo!
It is an utter shame that Borodin's life intervened to such a degree that he was not able to devote more of it to composition. His ability to create unforgettable melodies is pure genius -- artists with this level of invention and ingenuity deserve more than having to try and fit their talents in somewhere in the midst of simply trying to survive. This wonderful movement just makes you realize how much we have lost to a world that does not value astonishing talents like Borodin's.
I mean he has accomplished some of the greatest feats in history not only being one of the greats in composition, but also one of the greats in chemistry with his work in organic synthesis that tbh should have gotten him a nobel prize.
@@magnolean9762 Yes! He was a true polymath--a genius at impossibly long, lyrical melodic beauty matched only by Bellini and Schubert. But his work with aldehydes was more widely hailed and he was Nobel worthy in chemistry, absolutely. He was also a champion of women's education!
Thank you so much for posting this, I know the classical videos aren't as popular, so it means a lot that you're willing to take the time to keep this incredible music alive as well as your instruments popular
I'm not sure how to adequately describe the intense visceral response I have when listening intently to a masterful classical composition played by an outstanding musical ensemble. I literally find myself on the edge of my seat, heart racing, emotionally swept along as I anticipate the next musical phrase. This intimate performance and recording is simply overwhelming. There's a reason the Dover Quartet has achieved such worldwide prominence at such a young age. I'm awestruck.
Thelonious Monk used to say the band's role was to "lift the bandstand." I've had people who saw Lester Young or Charlie Parker tell me their body levitated. That's the feeling these incredible musicians convey.
My grandmother played the violin very well and I recently learned from my aunt that when my dad was a small boy he would often start sobbing when he listened to it. Just the thought of that makes me cry.
They are all fantastic, but my eyes keep being drawn to the cellist. It seems he is the heart of the group, the one that does the most in keeping the group together and setting the mood of the piece. Of course, as he pointed out, he is the most free to look around, since he doesn't hold his instrument with his chin!
he is the beat of the piece... for sure.. I think you are right. Just I would hate to be used as the beating heart of a social setting... when a pretty girl is up ... she is keeps the pace in the mids with the other guy with similar notes but maybe a bit lower. I identify with the cello... but I love the violin especially in this song.
I'm partial to the cello (I played it when younger). The composer must have had a special place in his heart for the cello! The cello lines are an integral part of this piece.
@@maxineporter8848 Yes, Borodin really makes the cello the star! I'm thinking you must have meant that you're *partial* to the cello, you like it especially well. "Impartial" would mean that you cared no more for the cello than for any other instrument.
I believe this is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard in my life . The first time I heard it I cried that was nearly 30 years ago and still when it is played like this It's still so incredible. How does it alter your breath and your heart beat ? Tug at you soul ? Thankyou so much for playing you are so talented . Thankyou for recording the way you play together such a treat . I could listen all day just heavenly .
I todo cried the first time i listened to this música. It was played by the borodin quartet. The Beauty brought tears yo my eyes. I still love it and this quartet is amazing .thanks
It’s so hard not to be moved by the way you all express this stunningly beautiful piece of music. The violin lady bringing it altogether is just phenomenally talented. Thank you for sharing, you’re all amazing musicians
I'm really impressed. Impeccable, flawless performance. A very poetic, expressive playing by the cellist. Although I'm a brass band member,I confess,I 've admired his interpretation.
We just listened to this beautiful, heartfelt, poignant recording. The sound is superb, the visuals delightful, an altogether moving and special recording, thank you so much. And by the way that is my funeral music…I was listening with a piano pupil who also plays violin in a young string quartet coached by Derek Williams in Nottingham. They had worked on the 1st movement…he too, like me, was spellbound
really tight knit group - they were actually almost bumping into each other's arms but they didn't seem to care - they were loving the music too much. as am i. thank you
I first heard this in 1992…on an episode of Ren and Stimpy, believe it or not (Stimpy was laying in bed crying). It touched my soul. I’m so happy I found it again, such a beautiful piece of music. Words cannot express what this means to me.
I listen to this Borodin nocturne a lot from a lot of different groups, maybe I've heard hundreds. Starting around 2:56 here begins a section that I love above all others, that driving violin like a heart beating hard is so punk, and at around 3:46 they really start chopping wood! The solos and tender parts are played with equal excellence. Beautiful.
Such calm and relaxing music, no wonder the band on the RMS Titanic played this piece as the lifeboats were lowering from the sinking ship - must've been a surreal sight and sound.
It makes me cry to listen to music like this. The world is falling apart and nothing is as I thought it was or should be but I praise God that he gave me the ability to hear, gave man the ability to make music and also the heart to be moved by it.
I first heard this selection on overnight New York City public radio in the middle of the night. I was around 35 years old. I am now 68 but the music is not diminished.
my first exposure to this piece was watching a Disney animated short set to the story of The Matchstick Girl, and I fell in love. This performance brought beautiful tears to my eyes. Bravo a tutti!
so i’ve probably been planning my wedding since my senior year of high school,, and i’m now a junior in college. i’d love to have this for my processional!
I heard this piece many decades ago and loved it, but did not remember the composer, or name of the piece. When I stumbled upon your rendition here, it came immediately to my mind, as something I heard years ago. Thank you for posting this sublime piece, it brings tears to me, your rendition is so superb. I play it over and over...I never want to forget it!!
I do LOVE this DOVER String Quartet. Very gifted and obviously hard-working musicians. You don't get to be this good without a lot of innate talent and a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and also loving what you do.
After listening countless times to this piece, this is the first time I felt and understood the musical arc of this beautiful quartet movement. What an exciting performance, not to mention the gorgeous sound. Thank you!
ah!!! so lovely to see my favorite string quartet again producing beautiful music. it would be a dream come true to hear them play the entirety of this quartet 💕
When I was in my 20s this and Madam Butterfly's Un Biel Di Vedremo were my favorites and my friends made so much fun of me. They finally got it and now they thank me. How great is that?
A superb version..! To my embarrassment, I didn’t know this jewel. It’s amazing the non verbal communication between all you guys. Do much energy and tenderness when needed. A huge fan from now on..!
Amazing to think that Borodin was a Doctor who turned to research organic chemistry successfully but had this musical creativity. He was a member of the mighty handful who took their inspiration from Russian folk songs and tales though not one of them had a structured musical education in fact they eschewed that, except Rimsky -Korsakov who was appointed a professor at the St Petersburg conservatory and became its best pupil his own words.
This is one of the best string quartet music, and yet I think this is still my favorite rendition of Borodin's no. 2. But I can't find this piece in your Album in Apple Music nor in Spotify. I really hope you guys put this as well on those platform. Makes it easier to listen to this beautiful music. By the way, Great Job guys!
This performance is sublime. So musical. You really understand the music. As a professional violinist, I know how hard it is to find compatible chamber musicians. Hi from your newest subscriber!
I'm pretty sure they are tuned to 444. The ending is the part to identify. Very cool. I know most chamber groups and other orchestras in Europe tune much higher than other parts of the world, but either way it sounds phenomenal.
As a violist who has endured all of the jokes, you madame have achieved the most beautiful sound I have ever heard on the instrument. Even the accompaniment portions are well voiced and musical. Every phrase is clear. Bravissima!
As a Violist who has also endured all the jokes, it's too bad that Borodin barely gave any Melodic melody to the Viola.
@@Wheeliethaias a bassist, i still think their part is pretty
SO what are the violist jokes? never heard them
It's been my understanding the correct term is violinist. If I' am wrong please enlighten me. By the way my grandmothers name was Viola.
Oh my God I was thinking "wow these melodies really make this viola sound". It's such a sweet, deep, fond sound. I like very much.

Wish that they would include this piece on iTunes for download... whaddya say guys... and gal?
You're in luck then! It IS great, no doubt.
This is what this wonderful music should sound like. They have caught the life of it.
The last 30 seconds of this masterpiece is the sound I imagine the Soul makes as it leaves the body at the time of death. BEAUTIFUL !

This melody as adapted to Kismet, was our wedding song over 56 years ago. It would have been marvellous to hear your performance back then. Bravo!

Not silly at all
Not silly at all. This music performed so sensitively is deeply moving.
