It's been over 45 years since I worked on the flight deck of the USS Nimitz but seeing this brings back so many memories.
Loved seeing the A-6 and the E-3, planes i am familiar with.
The real danger zone is the flight deck itself. Truly one of the most dangerous places/jobs in the world. The only thing more impressive than flight ops on the boat is night flight ops on the boat. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!

Aircraft carriers are not “boats”. They are ships. However, submarines are called boats.

I am always profoundly proud of our US service men and women who are able to fly off a carrier without fear, they make me proud. My son was a marine, slept under where they take off, I think that was when I became interested some years ago. I still like to watch the planes take off and land on deck. Be safe everyone and thank you for your service. We need all of you protecting us.

Navy Brat here. Grew up around Navy flight testing bases. Two of my favorite sounds together: Hall of the Mountain Kings and Fighters taking off. Perfect match. Fly Navy/Semper Fi
1982 to 1988 Navy VS-41 and VS-33 AZ2 two west pacs and when I was a plane captain it was a big RUSH..

If you ever get the chance to watch flight ops on a carrier go for it! I worked the flight deck on two carriers during the Vietnam War. Many times during my time off I would go up on the island and just watch. An extremely dangerous place made safe by the professionalism of all hands. Add to it 50 or so planes loaded down all sorts of ordinance makes it that more Hazzardous. I'll never experience any thing like that again. Proud member of the Gulf of tonkin yacht club!

What planes are those lining up behind and off to the left of the other jet that is going through takeoff procedures at around 1:00? I've never seen them before
Those are EA-6B Prowlers. They were used for electronic warfare. They've since been retired and replaced by the EA-18G Growler, a variant of the F/A-18F two-seat Super Hornet.
I was wondering, what signal is how the guy is like lifting his palm up? I'd guess it's to increase to takeoff power but for that i thought is the index finger up and wrist shaking
I'm means "combat power" - an increase in power due to a higher weight of the aircraft.

When were these taken? I thought the A-6 was retired?
They were EA-6Bs which lasted long after the A-6. Still, it was a few years ago. The legacy Hornets are also gone now.

good grief, how old is this footage? those are A6s, this is some nice quality video for being at least 25 years old
Those are E/A-6B's, not A-6s.
@@FlightDeckLife true, but they do belong to the A6 family which ended service in '97, didn't they? For at least being from 97, this is some pretty darn good looking footage. Most stuff from the 96 Olympics don't look this good

Is catapult safety officer a rate? Or you have to be an officer?
Launch and Recovery Officers (i.e. Shooters) are Pilots (Officers) who are serving on carriers as as rotation.

When they shoot from the bubble, there is a catapult safety observer who is an enlisted ABE. If you see them touch the deck and point, it's an officer. If you see them give a thumbs up, the officer is in the bubble, and the enlisted is on deck.
