STORYLINE:
Thousands of ethnic Hungarians paraded in Romania on Friday to celebrate the Hungarian national holiday, using the occasion to call for their minority to keep hold of the broad autonomy it has long enjoyed.
Ethnic Hungarians, some in folk costumes, rode horses and carts and waved Hungarian flags, singing patriotic songs and shivering during traditional dances in rural mountain areas in Transylvania.
They were whipped by winds with temperatures plunging to an icy -4 Celsius (25 Fahrenheit) as they celebrated the anniversary of the 1848 revolution against the Habsburg empire.
Romanian Hungarians, who make up about 6 percent of the population, enjoy special privileges such as the right to use their mother tongue in schools and in courts.
But since an ethnic Hungarian party left the Romanian government last year after being a coalition partner for 15 years, some
ethnic Hungarians fear their privileges could be lost.
The leader of the ethnic Hungarian party called on authorities to not take away their language or restrict its use.
Most of Romania's ethnic Hungarians live in eastern Transylvania, a rural area with vast potato crops and mineral water springs.
In February, tensions briefly rose after local officials hoisted a Hungarian flag on a municipal building.

As romanian i'm ashamed about the hate comments thrown on hungarian minorities. But then i realize most of them are uneducated, frustrated persons so I dont worry. Also, i'd like to point out an important fact: Romania's most developed areas, since past till present day, where multi-ethnic zones (romanians,hungarians,germans,jews) working together peacefully and achieving a good living standards near the cities of Timisoara, Cluj, Sibiu... meanwhile the parts of south Romania and far east, with a composition of mostly romanians, where moslty filled with misery, poverty and scandals. My point is that there is no Romania if you deny the history, every community (especially the hungarian one) was important in the order to build the country.

I am Romanian from the South side of the country and is all fine and normal to me to see other etnics to celebrate their cultural dates. If they respect our constitution our nation and not to forget that they ar part of Romania, I dont see any problem. Voices from Budapest should stick their nose in their Magyarorszag not in Romania.

@Charizard X uhhh... i am a romanian in transylvania, and i am pretty aganist hte autonomy idea. you guys need to understand that you live in a unitary nation, which means that autonomy couldn't happen. and you have education in your language, even university(in tg. mures). yeah, i understand that you want to run your own teritory, but please understand that you aren't romanised(that NEVER happened) you can sustain your country, speak hungarian on the streets, have education in your language, march on the street and even vote for a hungarian political party. take the good side of living in romania. we have all the same rights.

I disagree. Most reliable and authoritative sources say that Romanian Ardeal is derived from Hungarian Erdély, not the opposite. Your etymology for Ardeal isn't supported by any studies. As sources for the Hungarian origin of Erdély and Ardeal, I give Engel, Pál (2001). Realm of St. Stephen: History of Medieval Hungary, 895-1526 (International Library of Historical Studies), page 24 and Pop, Ion-Aurel (1997). "Istoria Transilvaniei Medievale: De la Etnogeneza Romanilor pana la Mihai Viteazul". As they claim, the origin of the word Erdély is almost certainly Erdő-elve, literally "the region beyond the forest". Erdő means forest, and elve means beyond. The word Transylvania is a direct translation of Hungarian Erdély, since it literally means trans (beyond) sylva (forest), i.e. "region beyond the forest". Ardeal is just the phonetic rendering of Erdély into Romanian. This happened countless other times with other Hungarian words. For example, hotar from határ, chip from kép, dâmb from domb, toc from tok, oraș from város. Many Romanian words are actually of Hungarian origin, which is perfectly normal. Hungarian itself has many words of Iranian (kard, tej, tehén, vár, zöld), Turkic (eke, betű, írni, ostor, iker, sár), Slavic (gomba, szilva, cseresznye, lapát, szerda, csütörtök, péntek, szombat) and even Italian (vendég, pajzs, kagyló, csúf, narancs) origin. Transilvania, nefiind un stat in nume românesc, cu putere politică românească, nu a avut inițial in română o denumire specifică. Încercările de a explica originea cuvântului Ardeal printr-o veche rădăcina indo-europeană, deși tentante, nu s-au dovedit suficient de convingătoare.
