The fact that Dreamworks is so family oriented but has so many adult jokes in them makes these movies so hilarious as a parent. I loved this movie as a kid but as an adult… still so much fun
Yes, I have been re-watching their cartoons year after year since I was a child, it was like going on a quest. With each year of growing up, I found either new jokes or a new meaning to an old joke😅
That is what makes it a FAMILY oriented movie, there are jokes for the kids and their parents to enjoy. So many movies today only focus on KID oriented stuff that they lack any jokes above toilet/slapstick humor. It's partly why we have so many parents who'll just put a screen in their kid's faces and leave, how do you expect parents to enjoy something so obnoxious.
Home owner associations are complete nightmares for a lot of people here in America. They’re usually depicted as Karen’s that are always harrass people and over the top. Of course not all of them are like that, but it was cathartic to see this one get her house blown up lol.
Dude an HOA demanded a man give them shit, let them in his hkme anytime they demanded, and chop down his family trees. They chopped them down illegally. The trees were irreplaceable. The lesson? DO. NOT TOUCH. TREES. THAT. CANNOT. GROW. IN. CHANGED. ENVIRONMENTS WHEN THEY BELONG TO SOMEONE ELSE. TREE LAW IS AMAZING
36:57 - This movie came out WAY before any of the Flash/Quicksliver scenes in any of the superhero movies "Over the Hedge" released in 2006 The famous "time in a bottle" scene from X-men with Quicksilver was 2014.

In the behind-the-scenes commentary, they were concerned about the bit with Hyper-Hammy - thinking that kids wouldn't understand the bit. Needless to say, they were pleasantly surprised when kids in the test audiences had to explain to their parents how the energy drink made Hammy so hyper that time seemed to stop for him.
For those who don't know, this movie was actually based on a comic strip that was also called "Over the Hedge". The strip's art is seen during the credits of this movie.
Everything else was just showing her being a typical HOA president Karen. But the part that solidified, for me, that she was evil was the part when the exterminator caught them and she demanded that they be disposed of as INhumanely as possible.
5:40 - So the "Over the Hedge" bit serves two purposes - introducing the contrast between the wild and the civilized places, and referring to the comic strip on which the movie was based. It was started back in 1995.
Fun fact: the bee that Hammy shakes is referenced in film Bee Movie, at the begining, when the main character Barry is talking to his buddy about a funeral.
As someone who has had Great Danes, various Shepards, and Mastiffs my whole life; that dog only caring about playing and breaking easily through fences is spiritually accurate, if not literally.
This is a great reaction to Over the Hedge! Your observations about the characters and their individual traits really enhanced my enjoyment of the film. You're right, RJ's character arc is a highlight, going from a loner who envied the bear's possessions to someone who understands the value of family and sacrifice. The scene where he sees the bear as simply lonely instead of successful is a turning point in his development. I especially enjoyed your point about how the movie blends heartwarming messages with over-the-top humor. The juxtaposition of a simple message about family with scenes like the exploding rocket of food makes it entertaining for all ages. Your enthusiasm is contagious! I agree that DreamWorks did an excellent job with this movie, and I appreciate you sharing your perspective.

to answer your question posed early in the video: raccoons are opportunistic, omnivorous scavengers. so they eat the leftovers of other animals' kills, they eat wild growing fruit, berries, nuts, etc., and occasionally they'll catch fish, crabs, and other small critters both on land and in the water for themselves. but yeah, thanks to deforestation and urbanization any raccoon that lives near a town or city probably lives primarily off human waste. :/
I love this movie and think it's insanely underrated! I love all the animal characters but Hammy is another level of loved! He's so much fun, adorable, and relatable 😂 Love the acting for him and everyone else. The actors did amazing voice work
