@@reservoirdograyh4n definitely. I thought you meant ERP in general wasn’t working because the only times ERP doesn’t work is when people don’t commit to it, and they usually don’t commit to it because it doesn’t provide relief. Watching your videos makes me strangely emotional. Your tone of voice, sense of humor, and just the calm way you go about talking about OCD makes me really wish this channel had been around when I was a young teenager, when I didn't know I had OCD. I thought I was crazy for so long. I am in my 20s now and know that I have OCD and this knowledge helps, but I still feel like I lost a chunk of my life due to OCD and watching these videos just makes me so grateful. I feel like when things get bad again, I have a resource. So thank you for making these videos because they help, a LOT.

I'll never forget that one day. To begin, my OCD is on the milder side compared to some people I've read about. My OCD was at it's high water mark around ten years ago. The obsessions wouldn't allow me to leave a room that I wasn't coming back to for a while unless I spent about twenty minutes compulsing. I was surfing the net before bedtime and saw something about someone, a celebrity, songwriter, author or whoever, can't remember the specifics. Whoever it was, I was admiring them for their talents, achievements, personality, again I don't recall. It was late and time for sleep and the obsessions woke up and started their clawing at my brain and I sat there not wanting to spend the time compulsing. I said to myself "this is so exhausting, I want to be like so and so", (the individual I was admiring). That thought led into all people who don't have OCD. I want to be like them. And so I did what people without OCD would do. I let go of the mouse, turned off the light, used the bathroom and went to bed. My intrusive thoughts were in a rage, the anxiety clawed physically up my back tensing my muscles. I wanted to give in but I held my ground thinking I want to be like everyone who is free, and those I admire. I literally stuck my tongue out at my OCD while laying in bed. It's as if the thoughts got bored with me and went off to torment someone else. I kept this up, day after day, my very own personalized form of ERT. Over time my OCD got way better. Way! Better! It's not gone. I still have what I call "tender moments with my OCD". I just sometimes forget to explain to the thoughts that I'm more interested in being like people without this affliction than to spend time with them (the obsessions) and find myself, out of habit, compulsing. But when I remember, I simply say, "nope, I want to be like this guy, or that lady. It gives me the power to walk away while the thoughts continue to try and dig their claws into my head like a feral cat. I've explained this to a friend who has more severe OCD. She said no way would that be all it takes to see some improvement. I told it to another friend who has this affliction and he said "I don't even think about that crap anymore", he's on medication now. So, I realize we are quite a spectrum. But this is my story, and I'm sticking to it. Because it helped. ERT helps.

@@monsoonkairos234 Thanks Monsoon. I went to a psychologist once a very long time ago. I didn't go back because she seemed dismissive of OCD and was telling me it was anxiety. I thought that's fine, it's anxiety, but that seems like a big umbrella term where OCD is more specific. She never mentioned drugs or ERT as therapy. Also, that friend I mentioned above that got a prescription, gave me a book he had entitled "Brain Lock". It talked about Serotonin levels before and after therapy. It showed before and after scans. I never tried self ERT from the book although it was enlightening. It was just me being so sick of taking the time to do the compulsions along with the envy of seeing other people, (spouse, in-laws, friends and celebrities) all doing things that would take me down obsession lane. When the obsessions were loud and strong, I just pushed the thought "that nothing horrible happens to all the people in the world that don't do compulsions, I want to be like them". After what seems like a short time in hindsight, the obsessions weakened. I'm still using these tools with success. The OCD will always be with me I know, but when it rears it's head, I can push it back and keep it somewhat at bay.

You are very soothing in a non- reassurance assuring kind of way. 🤗 Since OCD is specialized its hard to find therapists or programs that are affordable. Only two in our area exist and I have the pleasure of having severe PTSD combined with OCD and general anxiousness which get triggered from my intense surroundings. It is people like you who help me to see that I'm safe and okay and nothing is lost. ❤

Your vídeos actually helped me a lot. I'm 16 and i always had intrusive thoughts, but only recently i realised it was OCD and your videos helped me understand it and fight it. Now, whenever my ocd tries to act i imagine it like an ugly worm saying my intrusive thoughts in a very weird and funny voice. And whenever my ocd tries to make me doubt myself (like making me think that i'll hurt others) i think "well okay. Let it be then" and the bad things don't happen. Everytime the bad things don't happen, my ocd becomes a uglier, crustier and more pathetic worm, and life goes on.

I've recently been researching help with my OCD after struggling with a few therapists, doing CBT and ERP - I've been really struggling because I almost feel like it's second nature to do the compulsions - Things like these help, but like compulsions, provide momentary relief, I'm super struggling to keep going, specially as it's contamination OCD and have had it for 20 years roughly, so it's all very overwhelming, though taking prozac and recently amitriptyline (which I hope in time it will help) I can finally start taking back control - It's comforting to know I'm not alone

Question: what do you do when you don't like getting relief from "agreeing" with the intrusive thoughts in order to make them stop? It starts a whole new issue of worry (IE: OCD days you think you want to hurt people, so you say "yeah, maybe I do." You feel relief from that thought, but, now you're worried that THATS how you really feel??? This is a horrible rabbit hole!

Hi. Idk if you'll read this or not. It's been a while since you posted this video. But I just wanted to say thank you for the information that you give.
My ocd has decided to focus on a trip I have coming up. And im learning that just because it doesn't "appear" as relationship ocd as I have experienced previously, it's still *OCD*. And I need to approach it as such.

The big problem with my recovery is getting caught up on the theme. It’s all the same it’s only trying to create fear, it’s hard to remember that sometimes. I know when it is OCD, but I just need to know that the more I react the more it’ll find new ways to scare me.

One of my problems with OCD that really bothers me is that I have to look at every mirror at our house and smile there or else I don't feel comfortable or tels me that someone's going to die if I don't do and in UA-cam I have to look at the date that it's posted and memorise it or else I'm not comfy

Guys think with me: (this helps me a little hope it helps you too)
    PURE O
    Uncontrollable thoughts vs Controlable thinking:
You have a thought and it seems to be ATTACHED TO YOU it feels so REAL however you didnt want to have that thought so now you are AFRAID and disturbed and anxious (of course!!) and it's natural to feel all this because you are being stole from your identity!!! So with your rational thinking you say:"this is not true because I am what I choose to be,God gives me that right every single day" or "I am what I choose to be therefore this thought doesn't represent me"
If your thoughts start to ruminante on BUT'S and BUT WHAT IF... you say "Im what I choose to be PERIOD.Case closed!"
IF YOU BELIEVE IN GOD AND YOU ARE AFRAID YOU CAN EVERYDAY PRAY ASKING FOR FORGIVENESS.Tell God you dont want to be specific because it could trigger you but you want him to know that you are truly sorry.
MOSTLY IMPORTANTLY THAN EVERYTHING I SAID: FIND A PROFISSSIONAL TO HELP YOU ❤

I am not gonna lie, this advice here helped me more than everything i have ever tried. An example could be such for people with ocd about contamination: “yeah, mr brain, that is indeed an extremely horrific and scary contamination i will catch if i don’t wash my hands, i will probably die because of this or suffer forever”. a week do that and you will feel much better, then your brain will automatically not be scared of intrusive thoughts, and no fear = no thoughts.
ps: applicable to every kind of ocd i believe

yep, it is the advice that helps the best and fast. Not that hard to apply too, you just have to know it and apply it. Took me 3 years to discover this and it changed my life.

Reading the comments to find what people do.. As I'm trying to cope with my ocd and not feeed the monster. I am trying to stop and breathe, then acknowledge its just a thought and not a fact... And try to let go.. But that's the hard bit.. Letting go

Thank you so much for the help you are giving to everyone of us. All of your material is super helpful and important for all of us. I have a question about this video and ERP. What should we do if we are afraid that after we accept the thoughts although we know they are not our real us and don't react to them in any way we start to fear that this way we will accept them as real. I mean isn't the border with real and not real to thin there? Thanks again.

Ive come to recognisw my ocd and try and combat it with the help of therapy... I've found it difficult when there's always something new, but I really like the reminder here that my job isn't to worry about a thing I said years ago or why I did it or whether it was years ago etc... My job is to just get on with my damn life...
    It's just not very easy

I just try to let it be as much as i can and try to live through it and not do any rituals or checking because i know i will make my ocd worse in the long term. I am seeing a ocd therapist now on monday for my pocd now on monday mainly because i need help with my physical/groinal feelings wich is my worst enemy in my ocd and not the unwanted sexual toughts that i dont get. I hear how stupid it sounds but as soon as i walk by a much younger person i belive that i get a physicaland groinal reaction and get a lot of what if feelings and emotions wich gives me panic. Just because you walk by a good lookin girl you wont react that would just be weird so this is something that have to go away it`s so weird it almost sounds funny how dumb it is this whole thing is. But i guess this will go away as long as i work with it. I guess this physical thing just is a specific topic for me in my pocd and not the actual forbidden unwanted toughts wich might be something for other people with pocd or other types. Thanks for the help and i will keep fight this it will go away and it have gone away before.
