- USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) departs Naval Station Norfolk, Va., as the lead ship in the Carrier Strike Group (CSG). Lincoln along with ships and aircraft assigned to Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 2 and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7, will be conducting maritime security and theater security efforts in the 5th, 6th, and 7th area of operations. Joining the strike group will be the Spanish Bazan-class frigate ESPS Mendez Nunez (F 104). USS Abraham Lincoln will complete her deployment with a homeport change to San Diego, Calif. I only got to man the rails a few times because I was in Deck Dept. onboard Raleigh. I spent most of those times manning the lines. Wet and dirty job, but absolutely vital. The cry to 'Single Up All Lines!' made even the tiredest of sailors spring into action like their lives depended on it. It did.

I was an ATN in the mid and late sixties and ended up on a DD out of Charleston. I was shocked and disappointed that I didn't get a carrier but looking back, I wouldn't take for my Navy life as a Tin Can Sailor. Can't imagine being on something as big as a carrier.
