S. Korea, Japan, China summit: What's NOT on the agenda? | DW News

- The leaders of South Korea, Japan and China are gathering in Seoul ahead of talks aimed at improving relations. It's the first trilateral meeting between the three neighbors in more than four years - and there's much to discuss - with trade, climate change and disaster response all on the table. However, the official agenda doesn't include discussion around North Korea's nuclear program or China's territorial dispute over Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Peace is better than war.
Better to fight than live under the CCPs jackboot
China challenged the US so the one thing you're not going to get is peace.
US: objection!
Peace was never an option
The USA not happy about this 😂😂😂😂
This is the most myopic DW report ever. Ukraine and Taiwan are not the issue here. It's trade and economic relations. I wish the three countries well in their discussions.
Yep. Ukraine is actually a sovereign country whereas Taiwan isn't..
Exactly, talk a lot but say nothing.
Yeah. That's exactly what I thought. DW is so obsessed with Ukraine and Russia to the point that DW thinks every region in the world cares about European issues. Delusional
You're really naive or you're being purposefully myopic yourself
Nothing will work out because US is standing between them and divide the trilateral free trade. The talk will continue for another 20 years.
Better relations between the three is absolutely important
Yes! Whatever or Whenever it going on well if Li Qiang would likely not represent as elephant in the room.
Oh they're not going to get better.
Nice comment.
why would three neighbouring nations each with thousands of years of history sit down ONLY talk about what USA with 200 years of history want them to talk about?
what are you talking about? either you didn't watch the video or english isn't your primary language.
@@jedi10101 i perfectly understand and agree what the OP said
Therefore, China only sent a prime minister, and for the affiliated countries of the United States, Xi does not need to appear.
It doesn't matter if we were a million years old we're 🇺🇲 the most powerful so we make the rules.
the whole world with ten thousands years of history talk about things USA of 200 years let them talk
It doesn't take a geopolitical expert to understand the following:
1) Discussing Taiwan with China is not how you "improve relations" with China, which is why it is not being discussed at this summit with the goal of improving relations.
2) It's misguided to think that North Korea listens to China, especially on issues regarding its nuclear program, which China agreed with the US/West to sanction during Bush Jr. and Obama. Russia, on the other hand, has supported North Korea's nuclearization, and as such, is arguably closer to North Korea than China.
Interesting, it does actually require some geopolitical interest and North Korea watching. 😊 So you think China has no or little influence? They have been propping up the regime and sponsor it with trade deals. But you think that NK is rogue towards China as in like Israel is not containable by the US that props up that regime? How would we know? Just really curious, because NK is such a wild card (and therefore a flashpoint)
@@nextinstitute7824 俄罗斯和朝鲜堵住了中国东北的出海口。
@@nextinstitute7824China has trade deals with all of its neighbours, not just with North Korea. China is largest trading partner of Japan, South Korea, India and probably all of its neighbours. Naturally all of them have to talk, including about climate
I think you are a bit off on CN-DPRK relations. Yes, China isn't exactly happy about their nukes, but that's because they have an actual military alliance with each other, and China doesn't want to risk nuclear escalation on its borders, especially if the PLA is involved in the fight.
Russia also supported the sanctions.
I don't think there are significant differences in the quality of relations the DPRK has with either China or Russia.
There is the aspect that western sanctions against Russia have allowed Russia to be a bit more public about their relations with Korea. China has supported them significantly too, they are just not very public about it.
You are inciting a wedge to incite hatred among neighbors. No one asks about your monarchy
No point discussing things that will go nowhere. At least talk about things that have the potential for a positive outcome.
China can make a decision the only problem is Japan and South Korea can't make any decisions without their husband USA
Any dialogue is better than nothing.
My same thought. They discuss on things they can agree on and advance. Security discussion can take place elsewhere.
An official from Seoul’s presidential office said North Korea-related issues “are difficult to resolve cleanly and quickly in a short time”, so the summit will focus more on economic cooperation.
“A joint declaration is currently being discussed,“ he said, adding that Seoul would try to include security issues “to a certain extent”.
That IS actually what they're trying to do. you don't need to say the obvious to try to sound smart
As long as US not interfering the situation, an agreement shall be reached
We 🇺🇲 are not interfering we are the ones that decide what will be and what will not be.
@@TacticalMayo that's the definition of interfering brother
Three ministers in Hatoyama's Cabinet have had "car accidents" and "committed suicide" because of their promotion of the Asian Free Trade Area (FTA), friendship with China, and East Asian integration. Abe did the same thing in his first term, had his office searched by the Special Search Department and stepped down. As the leader of the LDP, Abe continued to push for "national normalisation" even after stepping down, and we all know how that ended for him.
What a terrible discussion!!! No wonder DW is clueless.
The last thing US wants to see is peace in East Asia, with China, Korea and Japan working together.

Due to the US military presence in Japan and South Korea, and the fact that the US essentially considers Japan and South Korea to be affiliated countries, this kind of thing will never happen

Former U.S. President Carter issued a statement in 1978: "The United States recognizes the government of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate government of China. There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China." Major countries should abide by their commitments and respect history and facts.
Hmmm what about the history and facts of China spending the last couple decades poking at the US with unbelievable levels of hacking and IP theft, overseeing an unprecedented rise in military spending, overtly threatening to take Taiwan by force and deciding that the entire South China Sea is all yours and nobody else's and openly threatening the Philippines, a US treaty ally that we are obligated to defend... This mess is entirely of your own making.

Did you just deliberately misquote Carter? He said the US 'acknowledges' not 'recognises' the PRCs position. Or did you simply watch the CCPs edited version of his statement?
The weakest president ever.
@Doochos
The word acknowledge also means accepting fact. Also, under USA pressure Taiwan was kicked out of UN and China was given Veto power. Same token world also acknowledge that Puerto Rico is part of U.S. territory. Taiwan needs to declare its independence in order to show that they are truly a nation.
West: you three must discuss Chinese inner affair during the meeting.
Who is the west? The Netherlands too? No news agency in the Netherlands says they must discuss Taiwan issue during this meeting. Besides, Taiwan produces chips for all over the world so it affects many countries. This means it's not just inner affairs. But yes there is no point discussing it if no positive outcome could be expected imo.

February 24, 1948, Declassified U.S. Foreign Policy:
Furthermore, we have about 50% of the world’s wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. ... that Japan and the Philippines will be found to be the corner-stones of such a Pacific security system and that if we can contrive to retain effective control over these areas there can be no serious threat to our security from the East within our time.
Taiwan was added to the Pacific security system after Chiang's army retreated to the island of Taiwan in 1949. South Korea was added after the Korean War in 1953. The attempt with Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia was abandoned in 1975.

Appreciate the dialogue between the Asian countries who are neighbours and will remain so. Nations will have conflicts to varying extent, but it's important that they engage in dialogues to work on the common areas of interests. Especially as the West, led by USA, wanna take Japan n South Korea to their side in countering China for the Western interests.

S. Korea and Japan are geographically close to N. Korea. If they are concerned about long range N.
