  • Some simple drills for training to use power against someone punching at you.
As your skill increases you increase the speed until you can work properly in freestyle push hands or sparring.
As you increase the speed, the puncher must be careful to protect their wrist, elbow and shoulder. If their alignment is poor it is easy to injure these areas.

"...but if you're not soft, it won't work at all." Thirty plus years of practice and I still try to over-power opponents. Thanks for reminding me.

Sifu Clear, around the five minute mark you say that when he grabs you you can feel him, "most of the time". Is there something about the opponent that would prevent you from feeling him (because he's also an internal stylist or uses some voodoo or whatever?!), or is it just that you might not feel him sometimes because of something about you, like you're not relaxed enough or what? Thank you!

baidutiebaemail Your ability to feel someone will depend on your skill at feeling and their skill at hiding. Tension is a big factor. The less tense your are the easier it is for you to feel someone else and the harder it is for them to feel you.

when I grew up in the 70s and 80s nobody ever spoke of Tai Chi as a self defence or fighting skill. It was always a health excercise thing. Kung Fu was the fighting art so I wonder where this notion started. Lovely and graceful as a daily routine but hopefully the modern UA-cam clips have prevented people from thinking this will help in any way in an altercation. The so called practitioners are destroyed in a minute or less with severe consequences by people with even minor actual training in a fighting skill.

No they are not. One or two examples on the internet does not represent every practitioner.
