You have what it takes to be incredibly successful, not that you aren't already. A mind for business and the love of teaching. I am retired now, but taught elementary school for 37 years and the majority of my classrooms had a veggie garden. There is nothing like kids gathered around the garden eating snow peas at recess and the swings are empty. Since retiring I became a Master Gardener and work with a wider audience teaching the love of gardening and teaching new Master Gardeners the propagation and the ID of plant components.

While I have no intentions of basing a business on gardening, I do appreciate your business sense and hearing your thoughts on the reasons behind your ideas, plans, and actions. I totally agree with you that 5-10 year plans aren't necessary and can sometimes stifle you or keep you from seeing an opportunity outside of that multiyear plan. As long as each year continues to bring successes and improvements, there aren't reasons to plan out your life so far in advance that you can't appreciate the "now". Hey Kevin, this is off topic but I've been reading about cold hardy pepper plants and I thought about your homestead since I think you are in zone 10b. There is a variety of pepper that should work as a perennial there. Manzano, Capsicum pubescens. In your climate I think it would produce chili peppers in January. It's a cool weather loving plant, and in the summer it would need shade, so it sounds like it should be planted behind a deciduous tree. Shade in the summer, sun in the fall/winter/spring. Lives up to 15 years, grows 6 to 10 ft tall. Fruit are small, about 2 inches round, hotter than jalapeno, 5k to 30k scoville. Might be good in the orchard. The other interesting chili I was looking at was Capsicum Flexuosum, which is apparently cold hardy down to at least 20F. I've seen reports that go lower. Very small fruit. Tiny. Smaller than the tip of a pinky. But could be used as a spice to add heat. Good luck with the orchard.
@@epichomesteading Looking forward to seeing how they turn out. I haven't grown them myself, but I am fascinated with the idea of extending the growing season longer into fall or winter. My main concern is how these varieties would deal with high temperatures, but it looks like San Diego has mild summers. They might not need shade there. Growing them the first year in containers that you can move around might help figure out the best growing location in terms of sun, shade, and heat.
Yes to more videos like this one. I really enjoyed hearing/learning of your experiences and the practicalities of starting the Epic/Urban garden homesteading business. It was great advice to follow. Follow-up question of sorts: I would like to grow/raise heirloom and/or organic veggies/herbs and some medicinal plants (all from seed) to sell Spring-Summer 2021. As you are well aware, that's time, materials(seeds, grow medium, pots, etc.) electricity use, business cards, flyers, advertising etc., how does one determine how much is reasonable to sell these plants for? Is there some specific business formula to go by? What has been your experiences with this aspect of a small business? Thank you.
That plant in the back round to palm plant I have one and it’s all of its leaves turn dry and brown and also do you recommend people start decorate plants like flowers or a a normal plant like a aloe Vera or something like that or would you buy a in door plant
Hey Kevin, nice video, thank you! There is another gardening channel that just posted a video about how much money they made from UA-cam in each recent year, that would be interesting and very helpful to know for your channel if you’re comfortable sharing it, but I would totally understand if you’re not ☺️
Speaking of you building your own brand and sourcing products: I'm dying to find a brand of grow bags that are CONSISTENT in their construction. I can order the same bags, from the same website, from the same manufacturer, that are the same model, AND they'll still be super inconsistent in the quality of construction or be inconsistent in measuring up to the promised volume (5/7/10 gallon) from one batch to the next. If there were an Epic Gardening approved grow bag, I would snatch up a bunch in a heartbeat.
I found a couple of videos on how a guy made his own. It was neat that a skill I've had for nearly all my life (using a sewing machine), could help me in my gardening this year. All I needed was landscaping fabric and outdoor thread, beyond the basic sewing stuff I already own. I experimented with sizes, and am very happy with how they are working for me this year. And I wouldn't have even attempted this project without Epic Gardening showing me the many benefits of using grow bags!
@@cheriekalel9578 how have I not thought about this? I'm terrible at sewing even just patches on things, but I've got a friend who might help out should I give them the materials and a meal. Thank you so much.
Kevin, I've heard you can throw shredded paper into your compost pile (as long as it's not glossy paper or contain non biodegradable material) but could you use it as a mulch in small gardening area's?
Hi kevin, You didnt have time to answer my question. I was wondering what the average cost of a house like yours is in San Diego as I want to live near there when I am older

Both informative and interesting thanks KS!
Thank you.
Talk to the potential customers, see what they'd want to pay for it!
This shed new lights for me. Maybe do it monthly or something. It's good.
Thanks for all the great info! Very inspiring
I have learned a lot from this video. And thanks for answering my question.
Happy to :)
That plant in the back round to palm plant I have one and it’s all of its leaves turn dry and brown and also do you recommend people start decorate plants like flowers or a a normal plant like a aloe Vera or something like that or would you buy a in door plant
I'll do a vid on this!
Thank you for answering my question. ❤️
It was very interresting, you're a very smart guy 😉
💕🥰aww donating to food banks is wonderful of you to do!! $15,000 is slightly more than disabled persons receive to live on/year 😥
As a business owner this was very valuable! Thx dude! :D
Glad you liked it!
Hey Kevin, nice video, thank you!
There is another gardening channel that just posted a video about how much money they made from UA-cam in each recent year, that would be interesting and very helpful to know for your channel if you’re comfortable sharing it, but I would totally understand if you’re not ☺️
That was very interesting. Thank you!
Thank you! This was very good info.
Oh trust me, I'M WORKIN' on this one!
Thank you Kevin! Very interesting 😊
My pleasure!
You got me to buy your book due to this video. Enjoy that $1.50 royalty!

More AMAs, coz we nosy😁. My question is, What did your parents do for a living and how may they have influenced your business savvy?
I can answer in another AMA!
Kevin, I've heard you can throw shredded paper into your compost pile (as long as it's not glossy paper or contain non biodegradable material) but could you use it as a mulch in small gardening area's?
Yes as long as it doesn't mat
@@epichomesteading Thank you!
