I'm a pianist in a small band and we played this piece once and it was so great. Herbie is really an inspiration so if your looking to get into jazz and fusion piano, I suggest you learn some of his songs.
In London Back in the early '80 u would get in any wine bar packed with beautiful lady and listen to wild live bands playing this stuff so after a couple of glass of red red wine sl one would start smiling to each other than everyone would choose his her own and get on the floor to dance and ask the band to play The Otis Redding one "my girl" oh god how lucky I was to be born in the' 63
Herbie was just 22 years old when they cut this. He's with giants here. Dexter Gordon really swinging the blues here and Freddie Hubbard at the top of his game. Not many can turn out a classic at such a tender age.
i was fortunate to learn about this song learning it for the orchestra, played it as a drummer and I'm so happy about the fact that I was able to enjoy it this way!
Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke; Pat Metheney, Markus Miller and some very few other guys are the real essence of Jazz - so much talent, so much dedication, just wonderfull.... :)

Oh my goodness, the coolest of the cool! Haven't heard this for decades but it hasn't lost a note or vibe as the years have rolled by. Love it, and great to hear Herbie's genius!
Ce theme est une revolution dans le monde du jazz et de la pop mais dans le domaine des musique variétés personne ne connais Mr Herbie Hancock le compositeur.
I joined the School’s Big Band late and the first Herbie Hancock tune I had to learn was Chameleon from the Headhunters album, so when I was asked to learn Watermelon Man for a school assembly, I learned the Headhunters version, only to get there on the day of the gig to find it was actually this version! Thankfully I learned it quite fast and it turned out great, but it’s a funny story which brings back fond memories
I have loved this Jazz tune (not song) for many years. I am learning to play the Trumpet, and once I have got used to it. I would like to be able to play this.
Wow...so cool. You can tell it's Dexter in a flash because he so laid back and slightly behind the beat and Freddie sticks to his guns and won't go with him. Love it!

When I go to Egypt there's always these guys riding around on motorcycles with a trailer filled with watermelons. They're shouting to get people's attention and hopefully make a sale. I can't help but think of this song and if I can start playing it in the background 😜
Just played this spontaneously in a bar, with a brass ensemble, in the small town where I live, and I feel so happy about it 😌😍🙌🏻
That's fuckin awesome
Great Jazz! Always a favorite.

And what you'll say about me who was born in 48 and had time to hear all sweet things of the times before 1963 in radio waves? Just nice to remember.
