This is a Fender American Professional Telecaster Deluxe ShawBucker in a beautiful ash body with a natural finish. I bought a couple years ago when I was initially looking to purchase a Gibson Les Paul Standard. I've had a good amount of playing time on it, so I thought it deserved a re-review. I'll go over all the guitar specs (including opening up the guitar), sample the pickup tones with some playing and play it with a musical backing track. Stick around until the end to hear my pros and cons.

So, about the pick ups being unpotted. I have that exact same model but black. I couldn't stand the noise caused by the microphonic pick ups, so I potted them myself and... Problem solved! It's the ultimate guitar for me! You can play ANYTHING with this. But be aware that it's a delicate process. It demands patience and a little know-how to do it.

I really like that this TelecasterDeluxe has a normal telecaster headstock. I can’t stand the big 70’s headstock these normally come with.

In alcoholics anonymous taught me how to be honest. To be honest with you I worked 20yrs on the race track and the last 2yrs I had been sprayed with pepper spray and mace by the Spanish people on the track. 4 months ago I had bought a brand new squier affinity telecaster and some spanish guys stole it. That was it I couldn't take it anymore and left. Moved to Denver,Colorado and living in a shelter trying to start all over again. Maybe one day I'll beable to get another guitar. Thanks for sharing the telecaster. You really made my day and it sounds really good. GOD bless!

Stay sober, work & save & then buy one. Ask a dealer to allow you to pay it off on laybuy or get it on finance over two years at low weekly payments. Just remember how much money we spent on alcohol & drugs in our former days & went to any lengths to buy it!

Man, this is the best rendition of a telecaster ever. This is the absolute definition of a "beater" guitar.
I saw this hanging on your wall in your PRS video from yesterday and came here.
Man, I want this one so badly. 🥺 Too bad it's either not made anymore or they don't sell it where I live.

Excellent run down. Your reviews are getting a lot better. The teardown part is good to see, and something I wished there was in every review/product listing. The extended pros/cons at the end is super useful. Also really good work on the 'b shot' stuff. Only thing on this I say could be improved is that some of the exposures, like the static studio shot with your body.. is slightly under exposed. Compare it with some of the really bright 'B shot' closeup footage and you'll see how some parts are a bit brighter than others throughout the vid.

    • @landonbailey

hey thanks for the feedback! I definitely use less lighting while playing. it gets hot behind lots of lights. I used to overexpose with tons of lights in older videos. I'll see what I can do in the future. thanks!

Beautiful guitar Landon. I even love the knobs ! It's a guitar ,I don't think I would want to mod but saying that ,I saw an interesting Fender Custom Shop video the other day that shows special models for 2020 which includes a similar Tele but has the original 70's type, Wide Range humbuckers with obsolete Cunife magnets ...

    • @landonbailey

Gr8 job on the 2.0 video, man! 👍
I remember the neck too. The pickups and the neck are the two lead pros, for me. And the lightweight Ash body!! Is it resonant? Does the ash make the tone any different to say, a standard Tele body (poplar or whateva)?
Yea, that neck.. That too, put me off at first, but it's stayed with me for two yrs, so... It's a wonderful great big thing to hold onto. And with the satin neck and those tall/narrow frets giving every nuance of your bends such great character...that, with those super expressive pickups...vwhat a guitar! It's taken me til now to fully start appreciating how good a guitar I walked away from... Congrats to you , anyway! You scored a lifelong best friend, there.
I remember the deep C feeling too deep. I was kinda put off by it. All my guitars have thin necks, even my Les Paul (That's actually the thinnest neck! And it AWESOME!!).
My LP also has tall/narrow frets, and that took me months to realize it was a good thing. For ages I was all upset that they put those "speedbumps" on my guitar, when medium Jumbo's woulda kept everybody happy. But , then I eventually started to realize that it was a real player, and the tall/narrow frets were a big contributor.
Anyway... Another too-long comment, hahaha! Great video & great guitar! Onya Dude, all the best! 🤙

I have a solid rosewood neck model, I did the locking tuner, Schaller strap locks and just recently I did highwood saddles. The saddles are such a great upgrade if you get sick of those screws. I love mine I want to get another with a maple neck. Probably just like what you’re showing here.

I had one of these as well, but I ended up trading it in for the FMT custom HH Tele(similar to a Les Paul). I liked both, but prefer the FMT. I just found it to be more solid, lighter and looks great too.

Back in February I bought one of these. It’s black/sunburst finish. It’s great for funk, blues Rock etc. My other guitar is a 1982 Ibanez Artist which I’d put up against most les Paul’s. it’s higher output than the tele so more volume and gain but the tele is a great addition.

    Lovely guitar and great review.
I was surprised you looked at it as an alternative to a Gibson LP though as woods, construction (bolt on, string thru) etc it's not very LP like plus scale length difference etc.
I say this as in 1981 I built a 2 humbucker Ash bodied Strat with two Dimarzio PAFs in it. It never sounded like a les paul 🤣🤣
Oh I just think a tele deluxe should have the big 70s headstock myself though

Have pretty much the same one except 2017 model and Black purchased November 2019. Its my fourth Fender and the worst one. Bought it on sale last Black Friday and my wife was in a hurry to get to Macy’s so didn’t look close enough. Been on the shelf for 2 years. Same plastic case everything. Only off by two numbers on model. Got it home, missing one screw on the neck pick up height adjustment another one, same pick up lose not even connected to pick up. Dont use neck pick up much so no problem. Jack socket loose. Tried to tighten kept coming loose. Eventually quit working. Took off the pick up guard wire off bad solder or loose jack input. It was under warranty but due to Covid19 unable to get serviced under warranty. Found a shop that fixed it for $30 in an hour while I waited, installed an upgrade on the jack input that wont come loose. I also did the same installed, locking tuners like I had on my Strat that I now regret selling. In less than a year has serious fret wear near the nut. Also this telecaster was so twangy in the bridge I changed saddles. Still twangy in the bridge even after raising action as high as possible. Looking at Badicz full contact saddles if I can get just one and try or a Schaller bridge that will fit under 100$. Reverb stock will go down if I give up on it and call myself whipped by a lemon Telecaster probably built on Monday, molested at Guitar Center over the course of two year and bought near Christmas like Charlie Browns Christmas tree. In fact in the tradition of naming my guitars his or her name is Charlie Brown. But ugly sounds bad a red headed step child.

The switch issue might be due to a loose grounding wire or bad solder. Could be an easy fix.

hey there! which issue specifically? I made this a while ago. cheers!

@@landonbailey You indicated that the pickup selector switch was making some noise when you switched pickups. Grounding issues can cause electrical noises like the ones you mentioned. If your deox it treatment didn't work, I think the next step is to take a close look at all of the solder joints on the switch and their connections. you might find a loose wire or a bad solder joint that could be easy to fix.

They can't be made anymore, the magnet material is not being produced as far as I know. So pickups can be voiced very close, but as far a material goes, it not possible. FWIW

Don’t you also collect other guitars, such as Strats or Gibson Les Pauls/SG’s ? Those humbuckers aren’t wax potted, I think. With large gain and high volumes they will not behave like a true Gibson Les Paul’s ones.

    • @landonbailey
      @landonbailey  4 роки тому +1

I'm pretty much just on Fender these days. And yes they are unpotted, but have a rubber grommit. Too much gain and they squeal

Landon Bailey Thank you for your comment. Perhaps is just me, but I just love the “classic” sound of the Tele, w/ 2 single-coils setup. I was thinking on getting a MIM Player Series, the cheapest of the FenderTelecasters, or the 60’s classic vibe tele. What’s your opinion on these. Thank you, and keep your amazing work.

I so never licked shaw buckers ... no definition with gain, fizzy fuzzy mess and not in a good way to my ears, and clean ... well... NO! clean nothing beats single coils, it's like it's a humbucker that excels at nothing and the only things it's good for, there are better options.
