Here's my reply, at last! I 've held this doubt in my mind for about 10 years, not finding anybody to clarify it until I found your channel. Excuse for my delay! The following is a full quote from page 183 of the book "The Third Chimpanzee" by Jared Diamond. I have split it into several parts just to show where the rule applies and also where it doesn't. As far as I understand, examples 1,2, and 4 are according to the rule but not so example 3. "For example, animal domestication arose partly from (1) people's keeping captive wild animals as pets, partly from (2) wild animals' learning to profit from the proximity of people (3) (e.g., wolves following human hunters to catch crippled prey). Similarly, early stages of plant domestication included (4) people's harvesting wild plants and discarding seeds, which they thereby accidentally "planted"". Shouldn't number 3 be "wolves' following"? Of course, it could also be a typo.
Wolves that followed... becomes the participle following. It's a different use of the -ing (there are 4 uses). This is because this is used as an example of the wild animals' actions mentioned in #2. Does this help?
In 1973, that is, 50 years ago, I attended an English 101A class at USC. They taught me this structure together with two more ones that they called "for-to" and "that S" (S stands for sentence). All three structures are used to make "embedded sentences". We used the book "Sentence sense" from which I learned about NEGATIVES, AND and some more structures. I adored that book, my classmates hated it. I have never stopped learning English and nowadays that there's the internet, I have found out that a lot of people don't make use of this structure which they called "poss ing". After a good chunk of time searching in UA-cam videos to put an end to my doubts, I found you. Later I will send you several examples that I found in a famous book by a famous writer where he uses the structure but down on the same page, he doesn't use it. And that created the doubt that launched my search for a solution. Thanks for your attention.
"My parents are worried about me staying here" or "my parents are worried about my staying here." Which one is correct? I feel the second one. Also, is it true that the subject of a present participle should be in the subject case? Also, how to differentiate between present participle and gerund.
This is what I gathered. This subject is also called fused participle. When the noun associated with the gerund is simple, concrete, such as personal pronouns and one- or two-word proper nouns (that itself does not have possessive), use the possessive case. When the noun associated with the gerund is abstract (such as tyranny, capitalism) or complex (compound with A, B, and C), or when interrupted by appositives, use the nominative case. Tyranny impinging on individual liberty is a cause for rebellion. My dogs and cats, totaling four, lying on the couch is the cause for the maid's demanding higher pay.
I know this structure .i appreciate your ! seeing.... Alice left without Jack's knowing about it . We relied on their being on time. Do you understand Mr. Bell's going away like that? Compare: I admit making a mistake. (These are examples from A Grammar. book. )
Hello and thanks a lot for your way of teaching. In one ovf your examples which was, l love you singing, you always emphesis that in reduced cluases, subjects must be same. But in this example subjects are different.(i love you when you sing. Pls explaine the reason. Thanks a lot
Dear Adem In your example, I appreciate you taking ....., can we say it is correct as well because it can be written like this, I appreciate you that you take the time to ..., and after reducing it it became, I appreciate you taking ...., Please let me know if it right.
Thanks a lot Adam for such an informative lesson. I understand this structure, but I don't usually see apostropy's being used. For example, encouraging children to play sport may result in children (their) developing interest in sport. The use of their is ok to me but I wonder why it is not children's.
Thanks a lot teacher Adam, i don't know how to pay back all the information and helpness i borrowed from you. Hope I will get ielts diplome someday, and focus on people who helped us to learn more , tell them how much i care them, and thank them with all my heart
The world is being more beautiful and sincerely with teachers doing this job for goodness not for money at all and that makes me the luckiest student who is pray for you and teachers like you..
What a great video! I've been struggling with the right usage of this part of grammar. Hopefully, while writing my next essay, I will overcome it! Thanks a lot! :)
I'm not sure how I landed here, but great vid. As a native speaker(US), I have a question. I have never heard of a structure such as "I miss my mother's cooking for me every day", I'd just say "I miss my mother cooking for me every day" Im not explicitly implying I miss her "food", but its assumed even though cooking is used as the verb, it sorta implies both, the action of her cooking and the result of her cooking, the food..is that wrong? It just sounds weird to say "I miss my xxxx's gerund + FOR me"
Hi. Thank you for your explanation.May i ask about these 2 sentences? I cant stand him being rude I cant stand his being rude Both are grammatically right? But meaning is different
Thank you for useful lessons as usual! Is this sentence grammatically correct? To make a road can destroy villages, to divert the course of a river and casting away animals. I'm not sure. Could you handle it for me please? Thanks in advance! Keep doing!
I try to explain it to my students as ownership of the action. I have a problem with his being here. I don't have a problem with him. It's his presence that bothers me. Unfortunately, I see these mistakes in mainstream publications all the time. I've also had people try to "correct" me. I don't know what editors do these days, but it isn't correcting grammar!
I'm afraid it doesn't take much to be an editor these days. The main problem is that schools don't teach grammar anymore. It least it seems that way to me. Keep up the good work with your students. :)
Thank you for the video. I have a question. I have heard statements like 'He waiting for others to join' or 'Atmosphere getting hot and humid as time passes'. These statements seem to have a gerund phrase just after subject without any BE verb. In the first statement the subject 'He' follows 'waiting for others to join'. What kind of sentence is this? These kinds of statements are mostly noticed in live commentary. Is the gerund phrase acting as predicate here? I would greatly appreciate if could could clarify.
Could you explain to me the difficult problem. Can we use both possessive adjectives and adverbs with gerunds. For example, can I write I don't like his coming late. In my opinion ,this sentence is not correct. If I write I don't like his coming, I think it is correct Another example We prayed for her getting better soon. This sentence is not correct. If I write We prayed for her getting better, I think this is correct. Am I right or wrong. Please explain to me. Thank you so so much.
Hi Write to Top Is my first time here and I just write you because I want to constratulate you because your video is punctual and effective with the explanation. I subscribed your chanel
Hello Sir, could you please help me with the following sentences. (1)Is he not charming? (2) Is not he charming? Which sentence is gramatically correct? If both of them are correct then could you please explain what is the difference between the two.
Really I could not help appreciating your wonderful class with beautiful explanations. But I have one doubt. How can we express the different meanings when the pronoun become 'she' as in the sentence I love you singing, and I love your singing." I love her singing " Is this sentence has both the meaning. How can we express it. Here I have a kind request to point out my mistakes in the sentence I have written above, especially the participle 'appreciating'as I used in that sentence., since I am not native English speaker.
Hi Adam, thank you for the lesson. Just two questions I would like to ask from you. 1. what comes as object complement In the following example? Participle or Gerund? I saw Jim riding his bike. Is riding a participle or gerund? In Engvid, it says it's a gerund? is it correct? 2. what is the object of the preposition in these two sentences. Are both sentences correct to say? The possibility of me getting a job is little. The possibility of my getting a job is little. In the first example, 'getting' is a participle describing me. So 'me' is the object of the preposition OF. second example, 'getting' is the gerund as object of the preposition OF. And 'my' is the object of a possessive gerund. Is it correct? Please correct me If I am wrong. I hope my questions are clear. Thank you. Be safe.
I saw Jim riding his bike --> 'RINDING" is a present participle , not a gerund . The possibility of me getting a job is little --> object of the preposition is "me" . In this case "me" is a subject in the accusative case , which is NOT very acceptable by grammarians . The possibility of my getting a job is little. --> object of the prepositon is "my" , Here it is a "possessive gerund" , and "getting" is a gerund and a subject of the nonfinite clause with a possessive pronoun "my" . This is more formal and more widely accpetable .
but according to Oxford advanced learner's dictionary, it says 'appreciate somebody doing sth' is the correct one. Is this like something originally wrong but later on becoming correct?
Hello, Adam! I hope you are having a nice day! I have a question. When I write an introduction for the Integrated TOEFL essay, I tend to use "indeed". For example, "The lecture and the article discuss whether or not the *thing* is effective for *something*. The writer holds that it is indeed. However, the professor casts doubt on this assertion... and so on". So, is it appropriate to use "indeed" like this? Thank you in advance! Looking forward to hear from you!
Hello Sir, “I appreciate you seeing me” is considered incorrect whereas “I love you singing” is correct. Is it because the first one is situational and the other one is a general idea?
#Write to Top, Being grammar a key element for proper academic writing, would recommend using a grammar book to study it?, if so, could you please provide references?. Many thanks
Hello, sir I deeply appreciate your work...can you please give me a link ,where I can check different type of essays written by you ,such as for agree /disagree, is it positive development or negative ,what extent do you agree .like this ,because I found some of your essay ,which is really advantageous to me .Thanks you.
Thank you Adam sir for this piece. Could you tell the difference between following sentences: I can't stand him singing in the bedroom. I can't stand his singing in the bedroom. Thanks.
Meaning of can't stand is " You're frankly accept something that is unpleasant for you". First sentence just describes about the person who is in the direct object position. For example, I can't stand him who is singing in the bedroom. After applying reduced adjective clause rules, it becomes "I can't stand him singing in the bedroom". In the second sentence, the subject can't able to tolerate someone's activity in the bedroom. Here the activity is "singing". Who is doing?. The person(HIS) mentioned by the subject in the sentence.
Dear Adam, I watched this lesson and tried to use it in one of my writings. But everyone says that it is incorrect. Only if you say so do I accept that it is truly incorrect. Would you please guide me? "These issues happen as a result of people’s wanting more money and higher status."
Sir,in this sentence"father didn't mind son's coming late night". If it is correct than why I can't write "father didn't mind his son's coming late night."
why can't you write like that ? I suppose both of them are true. Maybe that the possesive " his " is unnecessary makes your sentence wrong. Because actually when saying "son" , you actually imply that possesive.
Hi Sir, I am biggest fan of yours and learn many lessons from video. In "Adverb clause" video you mentioned that soon you will upload video about "Embedded clause" but I did not find it. When will you upload it?
Canada Canada the correct form is: Most people who are applying to universities or a university. Can also say- Most people who are applying for a place in the University

The following is a full quote from page 183 of the book "The Third Chimpanzee" by Jared Diamond. I have split it into several parts just to show where the rule applies and also where it doesn't. As far as I understand, examples 1,2, and 4 are according to the rule but not so example 3.
"For example, animal domestication arose partly from
(1) people's keeping

(2) wild animals' learning
to profit from the proximity of people
(3) (e.g., wolves following
human hunters to catch crippled prey). Similarly, early stages of plant domestication included

Shouldn't number 3 be "wolves' following"? Of course, it could also be a typo.

2. what is the object of the preposition in these two sentences.

Thank you Adam ...
Look at that girl, dude. Her walking is perfect. Is my example sentence correct? If not, let me know, please.
Javielhd de la rosahd sound alright to me. You are basically referring to her walking
Is there any guide on the "gerund" out there? Does the gerund always function as a noun?
Thank u sir🙏❤️
