What can you do with Acrylic Skins?

- Acrylic skins are easy to use in a variety of craft and decorating applications! In this video, we'll use acrylic skins for all kinds of projects.

One more idea if you have skins that are too thin to really work with - you can pour a layer of matte or gloss medium over them and let it dry. It doesn't have to be a thick layer, and it could even be an acrylic varnish like Polycrylic. The idea is to add thickness and the medium or varnish will stick to the skins and remain clear (even the ones that look white, if they say clear gloss or clear satin, clear matte, they will become clear when they dry) while adding thickness to the skins. If the edges of the skins are too thin to peel easily, try a damp paper towel and rub gently along the edges until it starts to roll, and then peel it up.

Love it! Great idea especially the pendant. I'm a lapidary artist and make opal pendants and stones the same way. It's actually the dome shape of the cabachon or glass part on top that gives it the magnification effect I don't think it really has anything to do with the glue but yeah man thanks for sharing all that stuff :-) can't wait to make something!

Great tutorial… Thanks for sharing! I am saving my skins but haven’t used for anything yet. But want to share that I use a large plastic tray, such as those used for dog kennels, and my skins peel out very easily after they dry.
I use a silicone mat under my canvas, protects the table and peels right up!

Easier way to glue your skins to your cabochons: I use glossy accents on the back of the glass cabochon and sick it right on my skin. Leave to dry overnight then trim around the glass. Using glossy accents again, use a light coat on the bezel and insert your cabochon with acrylic skin attached into it and press down firmly. I found I could use the exact spot on my skin! I hope this helps.

Same here! I like to use the cabochon to select exactly what I want for the piece. One can easily trim away excess with scissors.
I do not like E6000. I prefer to use Judikins. Cheaper, bette hold, quicker dry time, and easier clean up.

I started making the pendants after watching a video tutorial from Craft Fantastic. I also use their glaze and glue product to glue the cabochon to the skin. Love the preciseness of being able to pick the design. I love the other uses for the skins that you showed though! I'm going to dig into my picture frame box right now and use up some skins!

You've made what is called a doublet, in the jewelry world, if you're intrested. It's where they take chips, shavings or slices off of good gems such as turquoise or opal that they have glued together in a turq and earth colored resins; a complimentary iridescent for opal) and they do exactly the same thing that you've just done; sometimes the top cabuchon maybe faceted in some sort of checkerboard or other pattern and it will be white (actually clear) topaz or zircon or some such. Actually with opal it is called a triplet if you place a cabochon on top. An opal doublet actually has black background and clear resin/opal combo slice glued together and its flat.

Suggestions on how to store skins? I have so many but want large colorful collection before I started using them. Helps with creativity😁
You can store them with a layer of wax paper in between so they don't stick

Lamp shades come to mind. Knife blades for display. Electric guitars and other musical instruments. And for skins your not to fond of, toilet seats.
Mister Sirius hahahaha those are all excellent suggestions! Of course I'd also recommend sealing the surface of your skins if you'll be decorating something that gets a lot of contact, and those are great ideas!

Hey punch and LP (large old vinyl recording played on a phonograph- I don't know how old you are or some of your Comment readers) sized hole in Bookmarks and run pretty ribbon or fringes through it , pretty colored yarn tassels like on a scarf or pretty tassels that you buy that look like golden ropes and such ; silver ones too.

Cool video thanks for posting. Sometimes I let the runoff flow directly onto watercolour paper when it drys it makes great book mqrks and cards.

Have you considered UV resin for your rubix cubes? As you're only doing a very thin layer it would take 30s to cure under a UV/LED lamp (if that). Same protection for your skins but doesn't take long to cure.

Love your use of skins! I'm a newcomer who makes polymer clay jewelry, but when I "discovered" acrylic pour painting, I was hooked. Due to a lack of funds to invest in large projects, I got interested in making skins. Question: where did you find those acrylic pendant toppers? I've searched some of the big jewelry supply sites, but either they don't carry them or I don't know what they're called. Thank you for sharing your fabulous techniques! Linda
Unfortunately the seller I'd bought from on etsy is no longer available, but you can search for "square/circle/oval pendant blanks" and "glass cabochon" to find results you can use
I know this is old and you may have already found a solution, but you can search Amazon for bezels. They have several sets that include both the bezel and the matching cabochon.

Yay! Welcome back! :) These are great! I don't know how well this would work, but for the dishes, if you made the skins with acrylic enamel, I think Modge Podge has a dishwasher safe (top rack) sealer/glue, you just need to let it cure for about a month before using. The enamels can stand up to the heat of the dishwasher enough to be top-rack safe, I've used just them on glasses and had good results after baking them on.

Sweet! take video, lol. I was thinking about trying it, too. You know, you could also do a pour painting with enamel on the mug or something glass, then bake it on - ceramic should be able to stand anything a wine glass can. From what I remember, once it dries, you put it in a cool/cold oven, let the temp come up to 350 degrees F, bake for 30ish minutes, then turn oven off with the piece still in it, and let it all cool down on its own. At least one glass I did this on still looks like it did when I made it about 6 years ago, and has been washed several times.
cabochon, French, from caboche meaning head. Cabochon is the diminutive form so it means little head. Pronounced cabbuh-shon in English and not too different in French.
Brooch; Also French, but upwards of the Rio Grande, America: it's said broach , as in "bring up the subject", same sound as in coach in English.
If you want to play French, it's like getting a loogie up in your throat-you know what your throat and the way back of your tongue does to get it there? Now say brgroashe.
Or amongst your average North American just say bro+shh. Br(oe)sh like roe/fish eggs, said row. Still like coach. Don'tcha just love dipthongs?

You could actually just leave the paper backing on, if you used waxed paper or parchment paper instead of freezer paper. Both of those are more likely to stick firmly to the paint skins. But once you glue it in, no one can see it anyway.

You could finish out that Mason jar lid by putting some clear resin on it put the torch to it to get air bubbles out. In effect you've made a jewelry lid just like the pendants or rings or earrings, if you make also (ladies always like at least 2 matching jewelry pcs, sometimes 3, if they are very old). If you don't make a range in night think about it there are a lot of ladies that wear ear rings that won't wear necklaces or rings. Guys might only like the necklace or a ring but some my like matching eairings? These days, maybe a pair of guys might like one earring each that matches their partner's.

Great question, you could try warming the acrylic slightly as you apply it to help it stretch and fit the shape as one example. good luck!

Sure thing, you could secure it with some super glue or especially if you coat the whole thing with resin when you're done

lay the glass down to cut around, that way you can see exactly the cells, etc that you are cutting for your project.

Probably not, as it's not water-repellent like wax paper. it might work if it has a wax or plastic surface. if you drip water on it and it begins to warp, it won't work for this purpose
Is there some way to cover small stones with skins?
You can just glue the skins on, but it will likely be difficult to keep the design uniform due to folds and creases around the shape. I'm at a loss to think of a good way to smoothly apply a skin over a round object
Do you do something to your Skin's to get the silicone off before you make them into jewelry?
Yes, I'll wash of the surface with a little soap and water and then just let it dry

It is likely; it could also be little air pockets trapped between the paint and the cabochons

I haven't myself, but I know others have done so successfully
Can you do this with oil paint?
You could probably remove oil paint from a nonporous surface very carefully, but it would not be anywhere as stable and durable as acrylic skins

The glue is E6000, not 600 just saying. I did enjoy the video and projects.
Is freezer paper the same as parchment paper?
Parchment paper may not have enough surface resistance to let you peel the paint off afterwards. Wax paper is nonporous and can be used, but it might leave your paint skins with wrinkles. Freezer paper has plastic on top, which is perfect for this!

You should try UV resin.

If you don't like latex gloves (so rubbery and stretchy, sticky) ,, try vinyl (slick, smooth, not real stretchy though),,, or nitrile (textured semi-fitted fingers, stretchy enough, a hybrid of both?)
Wear the size of glove that fits snugly.
If your hand sweats too much, just cut the fingers off (I bite and tear at the web/valley btween) and put them on Individually or put the glove on and cut the hand free leaving all of the attached fingers on. I cut mine beforehand but sometimes when I try to put them on they tear. So however you want or can, "git'r done". I hope I've helped.
P. S. You are not using powdered latex gloves are you? That will mess with your gluing
