  • Roger of Mill Cabinet Shop in Bridgewater, Virginia shows just a few examples of how you can stain and finish a cabinet door.
    First, he distresses the wood, then stains, sands, glazes, and finishes the door. This is the level of quality and attention to detail that goes into all the work at Mill Cabinet Shop.

    Hi Roger, thanks for the great video. I have some questions and would appreciate very much getting answers for them. First, what sealer do you use? Second, what lacquer finish do you normally use for the cabinets- gloss or satin and how many coats? Lastly, is sanding required between lacquer coats? Please post more videos. You're a natural teacher and looks good on camera.

    how would I get this rustic distressed look in our 4 pocket doors? They are hung without any stain or paint on them.. we were thinking of using a black glaze then a poly finish... Please add any tips to make the finish look very rustic.
    Thank you
    Joe

    Great looking door, what species of wood is that? I need to stain clear alder a walnut color, can i use this same process or would you recommend a conditioner or dye first? What brand of stain/clear coat do you use? Thanks

    I'm not familiar with glaze, but I like the finished product when applied. Can I use any glaze?

    ABSOLUTELY love that door. I have very dark cherry cabinets brown with a little red tinge to it. I have been watching DIY videos on painting them. I just don't think DARK cabinets with matching DARK WOOD floors make for a good looking kitchen. I am wanting to paint my cabinets antique white or linen white and rubbing a chocolate glaze over it. But I am so scared to even try. I don't want to ruin them. I wish I had the set up you have to redo my kitchen. :(

    Nice work really love the stain it's a beautiful finish. Hello my name is Nate and I may may be moving to Harrisonburg. Could you tell me about it. I come from one of the few smal southern towns in Florida. I heard that Northern Va ain't to southern if you know what I mean. If you wouldn't mind telling me how Harrisonburg is in relation to the the rest of Virginia it'd be great!

    Hey roger great work hope you mix in some PPE 30 years of finishing can damage your body... My family was a small shop and my dad never used PPE intell i made him.. Great finish.. Also we always sanded the sealer with the grain why did you say it doesnt matter

    • @grubbetuchus
      @grubbetuchus 7 років тому

      The reason that it doesn't matter is that you are not sanding the wood. Sanding wood leaves sandscratches that are visible and also unsightly if the sanding isn't done with the grain. Sanding between coats of lacquer finish doesn't leave a visible scratch pattern if your grit is 280 or finer.
      When you whitewood sand (no finish has been applied yet), you sand with the grain so that your scratch pattern "blends in" with the grain pattern.

    So you stain, then seal, then sand, glaze, and laquer..... so if the last coat is LAQUER, what is the SEAL?

    • @friedricengravy6646
      @friedricengravy6646 7 років тому

      The best to use under glaze for adhesion is vinyl sealer....sand with 320 grit 3m gray paper if possible. U gotta let the glaze dry or it will blush after top-coat. Im assuming when he says lacquer-he means at least a pre-cat lacquer. Straight old school lacquer will not hold up under normal kitchen conditions, ie: steam, hear, cleaning.....all dry times should come from the products manufacturer. Ask for data sheets-not msd sheets, but the ones with priduct specs & realistic expectations after propper application. Good luck!!
