RTD wrote the line "Judoon platoon upon the moon" for David because with his natural Scottish accent, it was going to be hard for him to say the "oo" sound in the Estuary accent he used on the show. He was essentially trolling him!
Martha Jones was one of a small number of Companions who didn't grow into a strong character as his/her run progressed. She was one of the few strong ones from day one. Tossed out of her element in this story, meeting aliens, trapped on the moon, and had the intellect and courage to be a valuable ally to the Doctor from minute # 1. I was sad she only got one season.
@@doglover12373 She had two. I count her recurring role in series 4 as being a second season, seeing as she was in just shy of half the episodes (episodes 4-6, and 12-13).
"If we can travel to the moon, we can travel back." "Well, I'm not. Far as I'm concerned you've gotta earn that title." "We could die any minute, but all the same, it's beautiful." "That means this is the only air we've got. What happens when it runs out?" "Extra-terrestrial. Got to be." Martha Jones is so smart and intelligent. Literally one of the most capable companions in the entire Whoniverse. Hugely underrated. I wish she'd come back!!!
To this day, this is the best season opener we've had. Perfectly pitched, introduces the concept and companion well for newcomers, great pacing, fun baddy, chucklesome script. One of the most under-rated stories in New Who, this.
Tim Austin Weeelllll...it was certainly a good one, but if you're talking about the entire history of Doctor Who, then I'd have to go with Remembrance of the Daleks.
Tim Austin this wasn't a season opener this was the second episode run away bride was the real opener and that was also good continueing where the last season left off
Vince Goldthorp there was a bit of trivia i saw where they said DT had trouble saying those words without reverting back to his natural scottish accent. so they came up with this species just so DT would have to say that phrase.
I love the look he gets when he's trying to decide if the person who interests him is a good fit for a companion. Its like a double blind job application. 1:11 and 1:43
I always liked Martha as a companion. I know a lot of people hated her for some reason (probably because she was following up Rose), but I always liked her. Plus, there were some really great episodes in her season. The two-parter with the human Doctor, Blink, the Shakespeare episode (still to this day my favourite episode of all Doctor Who). Even The Master stuff, while a little silly at the end (Doctor Dobby!) was pretty great.
This was a phenomenal series. Series 4 is better but best episodes are smith and Jones, the Shakespeare code, human nature and the family of blood and the three-part finale being the best! :-)
***** OMG! Wait, how did I even forget those? HAHA! 42 is like in my top 5 episodes of new who. Super creepy. The Lazarus Experiment is fantastic too. I watch it a LOT.
I love Martha Jones! I think she's proper underrated. And I love this episode, brilliant series opener for Doctor Who. Love the detail in Martha's family and everything. Brilliant! :)
Rose was Ten's lover but she was truly Nine's companion. Donna was truly Ten's companion. But Martha, damn. She's still alive and since she has canonically met the Thirteenth Doctor and she has came back for Series 4 and Torchwood, she could be amazing with other NewWho Doctors. Maybe Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor 😃
0:49 This is why I love Doctor Who so much, because all sorts of crazy, impossible, but wonderful things like this happen. People have fantasies about going to the moon, but not in a hospital.
The RTD Era was definitely the Era with the best continuity (all the nods and references to past events like the ship crashing into Big Ben and the Battle Of Torchwood 1)
Martha had the unfortunate timing to follow Rose who had helped shape the identity of the revived series. Follow anyone else and she's much more beloved. At least she was able to walk away with her life relatively intact though.
I think Martha just loved the Doctor's nature and was fascinated by the fact that he was alien. It made her feels special and she felt a connection with the Doctor, but the Doctor just didn't feel that connection that was the problem with Martha her love for the Doctor got annoying at times, Human Nature i'm looking at you.
2:35 Here comes the Judoon police! I really like the Judoon ships. Who designed the concept art and design of the awesome Judoon ships? The Doctor: "Heads up. Ask them yourself."
Laura Charland no, freema played martha's cousin adiola at the torch wood, canary wharf. the characters were cousins. no clone, no clara, no incarnations.
Most of the new era companions have been considered because they had had a trial run. Catherine had her Christmas episode and Karen was a soothsayer in the Pompeii episode.
I think so to however it comes down to who the love interest is or in this case was. Consider yourself for example, you could be with someone. Then further down the road you meet a smarter and better person. Would you leave that person to go with the new one? Yes rose is gone but she was the "love interest". If Martha was then it would have been "better" for some but for now rose is loved more by most because the doctor loved her

Conzillahh - Yeah, I have mixed feelings about that myself. I thought the explanation earlier that it still feels like dying because that persona is no more and someone new pops into your place was an interesting aspect many didn't really think of before, but it kinda made him "less of a man" to whine, almost cry, about it compared to the others. It still kinda gets me when I watch that, though.
xnonsuchx I think it's more that he loses his life, what he was, not that he dies, he might live on but it won't be 'him' that's with whoever he is, cause he won't ever be the same man again.
Adeola was the person who went to kiss her boyfriend in Army of Ghosts, and got converted to a cyberman. She was played by Freema Agyeman, who plays Martha.
Maybe she'll hyphenate it. Then when UNIT-type stuff starts happening, they'll call in a special doctor... "I dunno, I think they said it was a Dr. John Smith..." (Pops in the door) "Actually it's *Jones*-Smith. Hyphenated. First name, Martha. I knew a John Smith, though. Brilliant Doctor; rubbish human being."
I loved Martha Jones! I always felt they didn't give her enough character development though, which was to everyone's detriment. And I wonder, however did she end up with Mickey? She was engaged to someone else before she married him.
i'm guessing her lifestyle became busier than tom's. however, after everything that happened in the stolen earth, she'd finally met somebody who'd been there, done that. similarly, two tin dogs finally meeting.
I don't agree with this anymore. In fact, this is not even in my top 10 of the beast seasons of the show. I think I quite prefer season 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 14, 18, 25 and series 1, 4, 8, 9 and 10 over series 3.
The doctor in all his faces and all his future faces will always be a role model to me i have been watching his adventures all my life both old and new and he will always be part of my life even though loving the doctor is like loving the stars themself :)

I know...I think RTD planned that poorly. I don't enjoy Martha as much as I could, because her having a crush on the Doctor was badly timed and overemphasized. I wouldn't even have minded if they'd switched her and Donna, since at that point I could see the "Martha loves the Doctor" as being a bit less of an irritation. As it was, though, I think it detracted from her potential as a character, since it forced her to be constantly overshadowed by Rose.
People in the show who can just accept that their name is "The Doctor" know, inside, that a name is more than just John or Jane or whatever. They know names mean something, and they accept what the Doctor's name means. Big brains. But even bigger is when Martha knew what the name meant but challenged the Doctor to *earn* the name. Who prefers rose over martha shes the most annoying who companion by far
"Standing in the Earthlight." Underrated quip.
My favourite companion. The smartest and in my opinion the bravest.
Martha's pretty chill for someone stuck on the moon and could suffocate at any minute.
And that's largely why The Doctor asked her to join him on his adventures, I'd bet.
Also because she saved his life
Yep that's Martha Jones for you. Scared, but not scared enough to curl up in a ball when there are people that need to be saved.
I love Martha Jones! I think she's proper underrated.

I love the Doctor's face when Martha says "Doctor Smith?"
*"Did she just call me..."*
God there was something so exciting about these episodes that the new ones just don't have.
2:39 to 3:48 I really like the design of the Judoon Warships! They are an AWESOME Looking design!
The Doctor never told Martha that he killed her cousin, Adeola, because she was inhibited by the Cybermen...
The Cybermen killed her, he just stopped her remains being used by them if anything
I wonder would Martha understand if he had told her what happened to her cousin...
Well it's not the Doctor's fault! The Cybermen killed her, not the Doctor! Just because trouble finds him doesn't mean it's his fault.

Yes, and if I remember correctly Martha also said that her cousins died there.
Yep. That little line about her cousin was just an easy way to explain why the actress is appearing again, even though she'd previously died.
Maybe she's like Clara. She has others incarnations of herself!?? Anyone ?!
