3DO has actual transparent shadows (Saturn has dithered sprites instead) On the other hand the Satun version is clearly running at a higher/smother framerate.
The Saturn seemed to have trouble rendering transparencies, while watching these comparison videos I've often noticed the Saturn versions didn't use transparent sprites or textures but used a dithered sort of mesh looking effect instead.
***** Yes, the reason behind this is the Saturn's dual VDP (graphics processors) architecture. To put as simple as I can, transparencies rendered by one VDP don't apply to graphics rendered by the other VDP resulting in strange looking transparencies when using real color blending. The workaround was to use dithered sprites instead. So the Saturn can actually do real transparencies however making them look right is extremely difficult.
Actually it's kind of the opposite. VDP1 is perfectly able to use half-transparency and let you see what VDP2 has rendered behind, and vice-versa. The problem stems within the VDP1 (the sprite and polygon renderer) stuff: basically, the VDP1 cannot render several layers of graphics. On a per-pixel basis, if you overwrite one pixel (such as a pixel used to represent a road) with another pixel (such as one used to represent a shadow), then you've effectively lost the original pixel at this place (the road). EVEN if the second pixel is half-transparent. Instead, what you will see behind the half-transparent shadow is not the VDP1-generated road anymore, but the VDP2-generated background. This is more of a limitation within the VDP1 architecture, than a problem getting VDP1 and VDP2 to play nicely together.
Liam3072 Thanks for that explanation. I'm not very familiar with the Saturn hardware and there's a lot of confusing information around. I found a great video explaining in detail though for anyone interested, just search for "Sega Saturn Graphic In-depth Investigations (English/French subtitled)"

Then, in the low colored lighted window of a small mom and pop videogames shop, just like the old Babbages but smaller, I saw this beauty running on the 3DO. I was in awe. These games were science fiction for its day. On the other hand, when the Saturn and Plystation came out, altgough superior to 3DO, they were already outdated hardware and its games were mostly old news.

Considering that the 3DO was among one of the total flopped consoles in only 3 to 4 years from it's release, I'm pleased to see it being compared to the Sega Saturn in this manner. Especially considering the Saturn has much stronger hardware than the 3DO. I think this video is a testament to something that the 3DO did right, and that the Saturn did wrong once more.
@Paul Daniel Hopefully your source on that 5 second Google search is accurate, because Wikipedia is most definitely not a reputable source that people like to think it is. Also, even if 2 million sells is accurate, yes that is still a flop when considering world-wide distributors. It barely survived 3 years, so yes it flopped. I still have my 3DO after all these years. Of course it did better than the Jaguar, 32X, and other toy box consoles. Those were a joke, a mistake, a test in technology if you will from companies that had no business manufacturing them to begin with. Besides, my original comment was never a comparison between other horrid consoles/attachments like the Sega CD, 32X, Atari Jaguar, etc. etc. It was simply a comment about how pleased I was to see it compared to a faster accelerated console such as the Saturn.
@@SeanUCF Hardware matters when taking into consideration the extreme difference between what's inside the 3DO and the Saturn. The fact that the 3DO compared this well to the Saturn is saying something because the Saturn was certainly not the greatest console at the time, nor was this version of Road Rash on the Saturn. I'm sure plenty of Sega fan boys said it was the best. Sega fans make all sorts of false statements when it comes to gaming. They're allowed to be wrong.
#VCDECIDE "So when are you going to do a side by side play through comparison of #RoadRash on #Sega #Genesis & #Sony #PSXOne???" #TakeItUnderAdvisement # #MiddlebrooksFanatics 😏🕹️🎮💖📺🎬🎞️🎥📽️💭📱🔮
Framerate in a racing game is much more important than any of those things where the 3DO is better in this game (a sky background and a shadow transparency on the ground, which would look the same on the Saturn on a crt tv anyway). Saturn wins clearly.
+jason cody I agree on speed, but think the 3DO has sharper graphics too. Considering it came out years before the Saturn, it is amazing how powerful it really was.
It really was, it was more powerful than most realize, it just didn't last long enough to see the really good later gen games that playstation and others got to experience. And another thing to, if you look at that generation, it was the only true next gen console. I mean the Jag was great hardware, but was a 2D system at heart, and some of the others like the CD32, from what I've seen were just a few steps above the super nes, graphically.
+jason cody Down side of 3DO was the cost, and that it did not output RGB. Jag (check my channel out and you will see I am a Jag super freak, lol) should have been 3D, but was crippled by not including the CD from the beginning (see my video) so did not have the physical space to compete with good 3D games even though if given the chance it could have pulled off some cool games. Amiga CD32, had the potential to be better than the SNES and other consoles of the era, but technically it was nothing more than an Amiga 1200, a computer that was already outclassed by the Atari Falcon and other systems.
+10p6 The Jag is one of all time favorites i owned back in the day, i miss that unit to. Yea the 3DO was like 600 dollars back in the day and the business model didn't help any. And remember the Jag's hardware really wasn't given enough time to be refined. It was a bad to bone system though I'll give that. On paper at least, it pretty much owned any console of that gen.
+jason cody Strangely the Atari Jag CD was made (at least prototype before) before the Jaguar was even released. Down side of not including the CD Drive was it reduced the storage from over 700MB to just 6MB, and even then no commercial cart was made using more than 4MB. Then having a separate CD drive drastically increased the cost of having both items. A design issue though in my opinion is the CD drives still requires quite a bit of processing for Audio playback. In reality it should have had direct audio playback with no CPU overhead (like most PC's and other CD based systems) as this would have then freed up the DSP for other tasks. The DSP is very similar to the GPU, so is a very fast processor that could have been used for other tasks, like on the fly decompression, geometry processing and so on. I have done a lot of research into the Jag and CD, and it is upsetting that Atari could have released a CD based unit from day one for between $300 and $350 which would have been a bargain compared to the 3DO and CDI.
The Saturn port was better looking than the PS1 port for sure. But the frame rate being high slows the game down too much and makes it boring as all get out. It'd be one thing if it was a simulation or something, but it's road rash. It was meant to be fast as fuck and exhilarating, but that smother fps destroyed that vibe. Still a fun game either way on the saturn, just a little boring in comparison.
Framerate is the most important technical aspect for any racing game, but it's not like the Saturn version runs at constant 60 fps or anything, so the difference isn't as dramatic as some people make it out to be.
@@sridrawings4510 But this video is about Saturn and 3DO, and are you sure the PC version ran at 60 fps? It doesn't matter if it runs at 60 fps at high resolution in modern computers. What's important is how well it ran on normal PCs back in 1996. From the Gamezilla review: "Hardware Requirements Well, I've got to start here, because in a word, they're ridiculous! Yes, even Grandma has a Pentium in her Packard Bell these days, but on my P-166 Road Rash jerked and hopped and choked in 640x480 full screen mode and the videos never ran no matter what settings I tried to coax from my nearly brand new ATI Xpression. Simply inexcusable given the talents of EA and Papyrus ... but then, EA did release The Need for Speed SE with enough hardware incompatibilities in the video subsystem that the local Computer City had a stack of ten returns piled in a box by the time I returned my copy. Editor's Note: we tried Road Rash on three high-end Pentium systems, all with name-brand video cards, sound cards, CD-ROMs, etc. but to no avail." Gamespot: "The only other flaws aren't really problems of the game, but of the Windows 95 OS itself. For some reason, it's kind of hard to control a speeding crotch rocket using just two keys on a keyboard. This holds especially true when Windows spontaneously decides its key buffer is full, beeps loudly, and locks, thereby leaving you out of control for a few seconds. It's not quite as annoying as the screen lag problem, but can still ruin your game. A little less annoying, but a problem nevertheless, is the fact that EA decided to use separate .WAV files for the sound effects. The result is what we'll call the "Out-Of-Sync-Super-8-Projector" effect. Picture yourself smacking into the grille of an oncoming pickup only to hear yourself grunt in pain a full second later. Pretty annoying, especially if you've played the more efficient PlayStation version of RR."
hahahah 3do sucks...thank god i didn't had that....in that time (1996) me and my uncle had pc pentium 133mhz, 16mb ram, 1000mb hdd, and i think 4mb graphic card s3 or something like that....blood, blood 2, doom, doom 2, duke nukem, warcraft 2, age of empires, redneck rampage, need for speed 2, descent 1, 2...etc...it was awesome i was like 10....but i'll never forgot first game i ever saw\played...it's jet set willy on zx spectrum...that music still plays in my head and i'm so happy that game got remake and working on win 10....
Saturn version is higher frame rate, but bloody terrible draw distance, the 3DO on the other hand does have excellent draw distance and higher resolution on the textures, check out the buildings for instance. I bet the SS version is only using 1 SH2 CPU, bloody Sega with its here is the hardware folks, now build a dev kit and make a game and have it ready in 30 days or we will cancel your licence, yeah,,, Sega had some great people in-charge of the company, not.
Actually, scratch that. I just noticed that the Saturn gameplay has the player moving at a slower MPH than the 3DO player's for some reason. When they're both equal in movement speed it seems about the same. (for those confused, I posted a comment here and deleted it a few moments afterwards)
Canal Vc Decide Sim,concordo.
the player is tryng to win the race in 3do and merely trying to survive in Saturn. what the hell ? with 30 sec the the gameplay is already out of sync.
Can you imagine if people used the arguments here on modern consoles. "well, the xbox series s renders at half the fps as the ps5 or xbox series x, but because of that it feels faster, so xbox series s is the best!". Words can't even describe the stupidity at display here.

3DO was a beast for its time, something on the lines of Neo Geo and the original Xbox.
I can't say much on the 3do version but I own the Saturn version and like it.

Saturn Road Rash seems to be the best one next to PC Road Rash.
3DO graphics, frames Saturn
Tough choice, wish we could have both
Saturn all around. Except maybe the tunnel shadows, which add little to nothing anyway.

Qual ODE?
Smoother graphics and frame-rate, My winners choices is certainly be 3do!
The image to the right, with the smoother graphics, is actually from the Saturn.
Verdade
Considering that the 3DO was among one of the total flopped consoles in only 3 to 4 years from it's release, I'm pleased to see it being compared to the Sega Saturn in this manner. Especially considering the Saturn has much stronger hardware than the 3DO. I think this video is a testament to something that the 3DO did right, and that the Saturn did wrong once more.
This was just a port of the same game. They weren't developed independently. Furthermore, many people regard the Saturn version as the best version.
@@WonderCreationStudios 😄 Oh brother.
saturn win

This is an original 3DO title, while the Sega Saturn is a port. Nuff said.
Except the 3do has like half the frames.
Vale a pena jogar de novo
3DO hands down.
How so? It clearly is running at half the frame rate or less.
Falou tudo
There's music. It's just quieter somehow.
Everyone’s going on about frame rate, who cares. Play both, the 3do version seems faster and plays better and that wins it.
3DO has better sprites, sky and transparency. Sega has better fps. Still 3Do version is better.
Wrong Sega Saturn is better.
TheUltimateSEGAman323 wrong fanboy 3D0 was the superior version.
Why don't you go ahead and Cash me oitsi how bow dah.
Framerate in a racing game is much more important than any of those things where the 3DO is better in this game (a sky background and a shadow transparency on the ground, which would look the same on the Saturn on a crt tv anyway). Saturn wins clearly.
What 😂 no Saturn is miles better
Best graphics: Saturn
Best sound: Tie
Best gameplay: Tie
3DO all the way. It looks faster to me, and graphically they're pretty close anyway.
I have to go with the Saturn on this one. The 3DO has shit frame rate which I cannot stand.
3DO Wins
Rodrigo Geraldo nostálgico my ass that it wins
Saturn is 60fps
Rodrigo Geraldo nostálgico Was day
Saturn 2x risc 28mhz ..... 3do 1x risc 12mhz..... lol
Sega genesis !!!!
3DO
SEGA
Gana 3DO, mayor velocidad de procesamientos.
Saturn, as it has a much better framerate.
From the Gamezilla review:
"Hardware Requirements
Well, I've got to start here, because in a word, they're ridiculous!
Editor's Note: we tried Road Rash on three high-end Pentium systems, all with name-brand video cards, sound cards, CD-ROMs, etc. but to no avail."
Gamespot:
"The only other flaws aren't really problems of the game, but of the Windows 95 OS itself.
Sega Saturn Wins
3DO has better FOV.
Saturn has better Frame Rate.
3do, though it's close.
hahahah 3do sucks...thank god i didn't had that....in that time (1996) me and my uncle had pc pentium 133mhz, 16mb ram, 1000mb hdd, and i think 4mb graphic card s3 or something like that....blood, blood 2, doom, doom 2, duke nukem, warcraft 2, age of empires, redneck rampage, need for speed 2, descent 1, 2...etc...it was awesome i was like 10....but i'll never forgot first game i ever saw\played...it's jet set willy on zx spectrum...that music still plays in my head and i'm so happy that game got remake and working on win 10....
Achei a do Saturn bem mais fluida.
sega saturn
Saturn wins
Saturn is the 👑
I have to say is nearly a tie. Sega Saturn has more pixels, but is running smoothly in 60fps but the 3DO is clearer, but running in 30fps.
Both versions represent EA's shoddy attitude with games for years to come.
Lmao this game is a classic. EA or not... you're a bitch.
The only real difference here is the framerate, which the Saturn easily wins.
Saturn
3DO vs SEGA CD
sega saturn best frames
Saturn version is higher frame rate, but bloody terrible draw distance, the 3DO on the other hand does have excellent draw distance and higher resolution on the textures, check out the buildings for instance. I bet the SS version is only using 1 SH2 CPU, bloody Sega with its here is the hardware folks, now build a dev kit and make a game and have it ready in 30 days or we will cancel your licence, yeah,,, Sega had some great people in-charge of the company, not.
Even the 3DO has better graphics than the styopeed Saturn XD
No Saturn é bem melhor, roda suave, lisão.
Ronnie Von:
o 3do ganhou a corrida. SEGA saturn em segundo.
i didn'i like this one because its missing the music wile u race
I'd say 3do plays faster.
Smoother on Saturn.
If say 3do wins.
Racing is all about the feeling of going fast.
The Saturn version looks sluggish
I don't think it plays any faster. The choppier framerate just gives that illusion.
Actually, scratch that. I just noticed that the Saturn gameplay has the player moving at a slower MPH than the 3DO player's for some reason. When they're both equal in movement speed it seems about the same.
(for those confused, I posted a comment here and deleted it a few moments afterwards)
It's cos of the bike
In trasher bode you can get a better bike
the player is tryng to win the race in 3do and merely trying to survive in Saturn. what the hell ? with 30 sec the the gameplay is already out of sync.
Framerate on 3DO is pretty bad and also look more pixelates
Sega wins.
scenario construction on 3do is faster and smoother
ps1 wins
The animation is dreadful on 3do, Saturn wins.
Can you imagine if people used the arguments here on modern consoles. "well, the xbox series s renders at half the fps as the ps5 or xbox series x, but because of that it feels faster, so xbox series s is the best!". Words can't even describe the stupidity at display here.
