- Today I'm in the studio and critiquing one of my major Plein Air paintings. I will walk through the process and demonstrate - re-enacting on the palette - my thoughts and colour mixing, so you can get a clearer understanding on how I was achieving what I was on the day.

Richard knows colors and how to apply. A genius painter!
Many thanks Julia!
Yeah ditto. thanks for taking the time to do this. what a great color mixing class thank you.
That was so generous of you to give us a lesson.
Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to do this, Richard - it's so incredibly helpful and very much appreciated.
No worries! Thanks for letting me know Susan!
wow.excellent sir.👏👏🌺🌹❤💜💓💚💓💙💞🌼💗
Marvellous, just what I needed, thank you.
You're very welcome Elaine!!!
Okay, I'm fairly proficient at mixing color and get it pretty much spot on to what I'm looking for. I still watch a lot of color theory and mixing videos just to learn more. Never perfect, I don't reach for perfection. But what makes this mixing video awesome for me is, not only are you describing the colors you're mixing, what colors you're using and why, but you're composing a thumbnail painting, on your palette as you are mixing the colors and informing even better on the whys and hows. That's incredible.
Hey thanks buddy! Really appreciate the feedback, cheers 👍🎨🖼
Loved this. Such a good lesson Richard! I would next really like to see you do a lesson on actual mark-making and directional variety with the knife, and how you get such beautiful, thick strokes that don’t get muddy. That would be incredibly helpful!
Excellent teaching Richard , thank you for sharing some of your process and thinking
Thanks for watching Craig!
Dear Richard, Thank you very much for your teaching, keep up the excellent work.
Many Blessings,
Sincerely, Annette Queensland Australia.
You are very welcome Annie! Thanks for watching and appreciating!!!
Your paintings produce a feeling of peace and joy when i si them. All a symphony of color harmonizes with the nature that surround us. It is wonderful
Real appreciate Maria, thank you!
The master of color.
Fantastic! I watched the painting a while ago and it’s really wonderful 💕 watching this colour mixing was a huge help in understanding colour use. Big fan here. Thank you very much for your generous sharing.
My pleasure Jill 😊 Thanks for the feedback!
excellent job . learnt so much in this one video . thank you
Fantastic! Thanks 👍🎨😃
Thanks for this Richard, love your colour mixing. So nice of you to share it in detail.
Wonderful lesson! Thank you very much.
You're very welcome!
Richard you are a great teacher! Thank you for sharing your gift!
I appreciate that Vickie, thanks!!
when you learn by yourself you do things instinctively, now I know why I do them, the way you explain everything is very simple and efficient Thank you so much!
Glad you found something in this video 🎨🎨🎨👍🖼
Thanks so much! Super great and helpfull 👌🏽👏🏽😍
You're so welcome Brenda!
Absolutely beautiful striking painting. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all the thought that goes into colour mixing. All of the other artists I'm learning from use brushes so it's so interesting to get educated now with palette knife mixing and application. You do it so well. Love the cheeky little apple in the background. Keep it up Richard 👍
Thanks Damien, glad you’re enjoying! Happy painting 🖼
So very helpful and informative Richard, I never stop picking up little gems watching you. Thank you so much.
Glad you like them Lynne!
I SO appreciate you sharing your knowledge and skills with us! Luv your videos, as I watch the snow falling here with -20 temperatures, I feel like I’m on a visual holiday in Australia with the most extreme Plein Air painter I have ever witnessed in action! You are very inspiring and to think my wee bitty palette knives have been intimidating me... no longer! Keep doing what you do Richard.
Thanks Valerie! I really appreciate the fantastic feedback!!! Stay warm :-)
That was brilliant. Many thanks for your time. Appreciated again. Bill
Thanks Bill, no worries! Cheers 🎨👍😃
Thank you so much, Richard! Now when we're watching you in, as you said, your painting "frenzy" on location, it will be easier to understand each decision about colour as you are making them. And very useful for our own progress in painting.
Wonderful, thanks Julie!
Very informative... Nannette Sole...
Great video, Richard! Excellent explanation!
Cheers, thanks 🎨👍😃
Stunning painting!! Thank you for taking out the time to explain the process❣️❣️
No worries, thanks for watching 👍🎨😃
This color mixing tutorial has been such a blessing to me!
That’s fantastic, thanks!
Best mixing and application video I've seen on UA-cam! Thanks for breaking this down so vividly and pointing right at what you are working on and how you mix and apply for the affect you are looking for. I would love to see you do a detail mix on your shadows and neutrals, like really point out in a photo or outside in person where and how you would place your shadows. Most of the videos I have watched so far have your shadows already painted in and I don't see in the view on your video where you are picking up those shadows. I believe that shadows can bring out an element in a painting just as complimentary colors can or maybe that is what I'm doing more that building my shadows. Anyway great stuff, love every minute. Thanks for you time.
Whoa, Richard you are so generous with your expertise! Thank you so much! Your style of teaching and sharing comes across in a caring lovely way. I learned so much on this video as I do with all your vidoes. No doubt your love and passion for working with colors is very intense. :):)
Many thanks for watching and enjoying 🎨👍🤩
Really informative and will save me a fortune in paint as I should no longer find myself mixing huge globs of expensive mud on my pallet in a vain bid to find the right colour. Thank you!
Glad to help Terry!!!
The magic of your works of art are all in the mix of colours thank you for explaining your techniques. Very helpful. 😀💕 love debs in Spain
Cheers Debs🎨👍
This video was really most helpful. Thank you for all your videos and all the tips you give. It’s so nice that you impart your knowledge for free, unlike a lot of artists who just want to make money from every tip they give! I look forward to viewing more of your videos.
You are so welcome Clive, thanks!
Great demo on so many levels! Appreciate your graciously sharing!
Cheers Jeanie!!!
Really helpful info Richard! Thank you.
Very welcome Heather!
Thank you for sharing I learned a lot but once again your explanations have helped me to better understand what I see

Terrific tutorial, Richard! Brilliant as always and greatly appreciated. I subscribed months ago after watching about five minutes of your very first video. Now I've seen nearly all of them, Liked them all, and Saved many! Cheers!
Awesome, thank you! Greatly appreciate your support!!!
@@richardmusgrave-evans9886 You bet -- now I just have to dare to wield larger knives and more paint on larger supports. :-D Kudos.
@@BJones-yw4dd Happy knife painting!!!

Many thanks Michelle!
I really learn well from your painting /teaching style....I enjoy this very much...thanks!!
Awesome Ruth, thank you!
I learn so much. Watching you paint. Thanks for the lesson. It's helping me with a Kimberly coastal scene I am doing. I walk a way a lot when things trouble me. As in not sure what to do next. I can now put the sky . Refletion on the beach now
Wonderful Sallyl! You can do it!
@@richardmusgrave-evans9886 thanks for the encouragement. It bolsters me. I actually managed to sell 2 paintings to one person. Was a surprise for sure. I can see my progression i am still loathe to say I am an artist. It's a state for mind I think 😱
thank you for sharing your color mixing with us. I really appreciate that.
I'm glad you like it Dyana!
Rich, cut my teeth on papa Len Hend but now I am ready to learn the knife. This vid on color mixing is the single best info for me ,perfect. Thanks. Richard Nathan Rogers.
Hey Fantastic! Thanks 👍🎨
My weekly RME shot!! Thank you 🙏🏻 for the inspiration and instruction
Cheers Tim, glad you're enjoying my videos!
Brilliant video Richard. You should definitely do more like this. I've seen plenty of videos on mixing colours, and they are all well and good about how to mix certain colours. But your video goes in to far more detail about the application of colours and how they work together. I love seeing your thought process as you go through different parts of the painting. What I would really like to see though is your thought process on adding or exaggerating colours that aren't really in the original scene. I've seen a couple of your videos where you paint large trees, and in the scene they just look different shades of brown but your final painting of them contains a variety of browns, reds, blue, greens etc. That would be an interesting video.
Thank you very very much yor detailed colour lesson.
You are welcome!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
As I’d read somewhere, “What’s knowledge if you don’t share it”
Once again thank you!
Learned a lot about colour, many thanks.

Thank you for this remarkable teaching. OKC, OK here😻
Glad it was helpful Kayleen!
Hey Richard, Thanks so much for this video.. I'm doing a beach scene with dunes and sand walkway and your colors are perfect for my painting... I really needed this.. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful Eve! Happy Painting!
Very helpful Richard. I trained as a sculptor and later took up painting for health reasons. While I favour the richness of viridian, cobalt, ultramarine, alizarine, titanium white and the more punchy cadmiums, I have been wanting to introduce the basic earth tones but not quite known how! Love your work and your love for a healthy life. Bless
@@jackiemargaret437 Hey thanks, happy painting!
excellent sir.
Cheers 🎨👍
Good man thank you very much, all the best.
Hey thanks 👍🎨😊
Much appreciation Richard. Thank you. ÷))
My pleasure Jackie!
Thank you for sharing.
🎨👍😊
What was the last color you said on your palette? Was it cad yellow day? (the day part is what I didn't catch). Thank you for taking the time to do this, very helpful.
Gracias por su lección
¡No hay problema! ¡¡¡Gracias por ver!!! :-)
This helps a lot. Is gradiation a Richardism or something different to gradation? A fusion of gradient and gradation? Is it possible to reach these colours with a limited palette? Is this similar to the order in which you found your colours? Thanks for the video
Thank you really great
Thanks Andrew!!!
thanks, Richard for the Eg. of the warm and cool blues in the sky I have been blending with just one blue #saltythommo

Terrific !You're a great artist and teacher !Thanks a million Richard.
wouldn't it be easier to use cerulean blue for the greener parts of the sky ?
That would work. Either way, doesn't really matter!
Could you tell me where you get your clear primed linen from. TIA
