  • Today I'm in the studio and critiquing one of my major Plein Air paintings. I will walk through the process and demonstrate - re-enacting on the palette - my thoughts and colour mixing, so you can get a clearer understanding on how I was achieving what I was on the day.

Okay, I'm fairly proficient at mixing color and get it pretty much spot on to what I'm looking for. I still watch a lot of color theory and mixing videos just to learn more. Never perfect, I don't reach for perfection. But what makes this mixing video awesome for me is, not only are you describing the colors you're mixing, what colors you're using and why, but you're composing a thumbnail painting, on your palette as you are mixing the colors and informing even better on the whys and hows. That's incredible.

Loved this. Such a good lesson Richard! I would next really like to see you do a lesson on actual mark-making and directional variety with the knife, and how you get such beautiful, thick strokes that don’t get muddy. That would be incredibly helpful!

Absolutely beautiful striking painting. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all the thought that goes into colour mixing. All of the other artists I'm learning from use brushes so it's so interesting to get educated now with palette knife mixing and application. You do it so well. Love the cheeky little apple in the background. Keep it up Richard 👍

I SO appreciate you sharing your knowledge and skills with us! Luv your videos, as I watch the snow falling here with -20 temperatures, I feel like I’m on a visual holiday in Australia with the most extreme Plein Air painter I have ever witnessed in action! You are very inspiring and to think my wee bitty palette knives have been intimidating me... no longer! Keep doing what you do Richard.

Best mixing and application video I've seen on UA-cam! Thanks for breaking this down so vividly and pointing right at what you are working on and how you mix and apply for the affect you are looking for. I would love to see you do a detail mix on your shadows and neutrals, like really point out in a photo or outside in person where and how you would place your shadows. Most of the videos I have watched so far have your shadows already painted in and I don't see in the view on your video where you are picking up those shadows. I believe that shadows can bring out an element in a painting just as complimentary colors can or maybe that is what I'm doing more that building my shadows. Anyway great stuff, love every minute. Thanks for you time.

Brilliant video Richard. You should definitely do more like this. I've seen plenty of videos on mixing colours, and they are all well and good about how to mix certain colours. But your video goes in to far more detail about the application of colours and how they work together. I love seeing your thought process as you go through different parts of the painting. What I would really like to see though is your thought process on adding or exaggerating colours that aren't really in the original scene. I've seen a couple of your videos where you paint large trees, and in the scene they just look different shades of brown but your final painting of them contains a variety of browns, reds, blue, greens etc. That would be an interesting video.
