  • Living in a hoa controlled condo...means of course that the best way to do air conditioning, ie central air with an outside unit....is not possible. So we have been using one dual hose standing unit that with an extra extension 'slab' was able to fit in a sliding glass door....but it was undersized for the entire unit...and so for successive hot days where you were unable to open it up and air it out to be cooler overnight, it got hotter and hotter as the days go by. Plus the original was bought in Nov 2010 (and we used it for a few days in December that year), and this year the hoses started to split...so it may be on its last legs, or at least the hoses are...so I wanted to get an additional unit to not only serve as a backup if the main unit fails, but to give us the extra kick to keep cool over successive hot days. The problem being...single level condo...crappy 1969/1970 style single pane windows...the new ac unit window attachment/extender panels...do not fit anywhere.
But...that is why I have all the tools in the garage, and so with a single new 8 ft long piece of pine ship lap board that I split down the center, a roll of double reflective foam, a bit more than a roll of the foil tape, two pieces of 2ftx4ft quarter inch plywood and some scrap 3/4" boards and plywood...I was able to make a fairly secure window frame that we can not only attach the new air conditioner hose setup onto, but that also has a removable insulated panel that we can take out and run a box fan on a shelf to help cool things off. And it works great, I was able to test it tonight and it helped it cool off way faster in the condo than previous nights.

So far just the fan has been super helpful, it helped cool down the condo much faster with that fan opening there and the box fan blowing out on high.
