- Ryan Muckenhirn joins Jimmy and Mark to discuss a cartridge that came up in one of our many “Podcasts after the podcast” conversations, the 8mm-06. While the cartridge itself is intriguing, it’s the history behind why it was made and the people who requested its creation that is so awesome. We’d love to know if any of you out there are using or loading for the 8mm-06. If so - let us know in the comments on UA-cam or on Instagram!
As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation™ podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

35 Whelen! Seeing as we're on a 30-06 parent case kick!
Awsum hunting round

My favorite caliber bar none. It would indeed be nice to hear someone talk about it.

lol pl
338-06 is a phenomenal round, I’ve taken many deer with it
Hey boys, thanks for giving a little respect to the old 8mm 06! I picked one up recently for $375.00 Canadian. It's a beauty. Some old guy sporterized it back in the 50's. Tiger maple stock with rosewood caps, nicely turned down bolt, modified safety, already had a Redfield base mounted. Been working up some loads and I can't wait to get out to the range. 200 grain Nosler Accubonds.
Continued: Well I got the old 8mm-06 down to the range, and it shoots great. With 56 grains of 4350 it makes nice patterns at 100 and 200 yards.
56 grains of 4350 is what I use in my '06 to push 165 grain projectiles. It moves them at right around 2875 fps.
@@georgesakellaropoulos8162 that's terrific! I hope to get 2700 out of my loads.
@@wayne3340 seems like a great find, enjoy it!
That is some very cool content you guys create. We have some interesting 8mm catridges here in Europe like 8x60S, a 8mm Mauser lenghtened to get around the Versailles treaty or the 8x64S, made prior to WWI, very similar to 8mm06 but more powerful and the magnum 8x68S, from 1938, same powerlevel as the excellent .300 Wby. Weidmannsheil form Germany!
Well if you're gonna do the 8-06, it's only fitting you do the 6.5-06!
They did a whole podcast on 6.5 cartridges
@@eggbert191 and nearly no mention of the 6.5x55 it was just a foot note
@@danietkissenle :(
Could go one more with the 256 newton (uses .264 despite the name)
i would hunt anything in the world with the 8mm-06 AI.
I rechambered my Mauser back in the 60’s to 8mm/06 and made a fine sport rifle out of it. We turned down the barrel and removed the sights then altered the bolt to accept a scope put in an adjustable trigger and had a Myrtlewood stock made for it. Shoots great.
@miketychewicz that sounds alot like my 1938 Persian Mauser. Somebody took great care and surely considerable expense to convert it. 29" barrel shortened to 24 3/4" and recrowned. 2 position safety and turned down bolt. Redfield bases, rechambered and custom made tiger maple with rosewood endcap Monte Carlo stock. Good thing they also installed a good butt pad because it kicks. I took my second deer this fall with it, but my loads are really built for moose and elk. Hopefully next fall I can test it on something bigger. Cheers.
Do a 10 min talk on the .22 hornet, .22 k hornet and .17 hornet!
Got my first whitetail with my 8mm06 the other day. Just above the shoulder, through the spine. No damage to the back strap, heart or liver. Flat out to 220 yards.
Heck yeah - congrats, Wayne!!
How about some handgun cartridge love. Possibly handgun hunting cartridges?
.44 Magnum has a rich history to start things off!
.454 Casul has the halflife, the spunk and enough cachet to win over starlets and stalactites.
Do the Weatherby cartridges!
The 257 Roberts! An underrated cartridge for sure! It needs some justice.
458 win mag
.257 AI. The best quarter bore ever.
My favorite cartridge. Imagine a world where the 257 Bob is again popular and ammo plentiful.
False. 25-06 in 120 gtains. Bang flop.
The 30-06 has a crap ton of kids.
Yeah it's the ultimate papa bear.
Yup. 7x57 has a bunch of grand (and great grand) kids! :-D
👋🏼(SuggesTion Below to Consider) I’m glad to see this caliber discussed today, especially bc I just won bidding on a finely customized Mauser chambered on the 338-06 A-Square, instead of the 8mm-06.
I chose this chambering to fit between my goto 270 Win and my only Magnum, the 375 H&H. This caliber fits perfectly in between the capabilities in the my bookend calibers when you consider bullet grain weight that each cartridge is best efficiently at 2850-3000fps.
Please consider to touch base on this chambering even if it’s not on it own.
🤔 Such as a topic discussing very efficient and effective NON-Magnum rounds. 🙏
Only the 270-08 is more obscure than the 8mm-06.
I know the .270 is technically based on the .30-03 but is there really much difference to the .270-06?
@@borkwoof696 Here is a worthwhile video to watch, and though I can't confirm anything he says, it makes a lot of sense.
ua-cam.com/video/2rT7DpXyxfw/v-deo.html
But honestly, in modern times, when all 270 brass is virgin and not formed from something else, it doesn't matter.
@@adamhymas4620 I just realized you said .270-08🤦♂️
7mm-08 is close.
More importantly, much better, and on the shelves.
Think like a salmon and fight upstream, or like a dolphin and ride the bow wave ...
No, bro, he said .270_06. Information. Attention to detail.
I have a beautiful example and use 200 grain Nosler Partition bullets. Taking it moose hunting next month.
what about the new .33XC or .37XC ? Best regard from France !
8mm-06 was a wild cat developed after WWII.
Wilhelm Breneke developed the 8x64 in 1912 offered it to the German military they said no thanks and he released it on the commercial market for hunting. It was popular prior to WWII and after and still is in Europe the Czechs still load it.
I've owned 1 CZ VG47 bolt action hunting rifle in 8x64 and its a hammer on wild boar.
sticking with 8mm, 8mm remington mag?
Suggestion for +-10 minute talk: 375 Weatherby.
Do .338 win mag
Shot my first elk with an 8mm-06 180 grain ballistic tip. Phenomenal cartridge if you ask me. Glad you chose to go outside the box and talk about this cartridge. I still have it and it has the nazi stamp on the barrel
I just inherited an fn mauser that was converted to 8mm-06 from my grandfather. My dad and I didn't know what it was because my grandfather never brought it out, we always shot shotguns bird hunting with him. I'm slowly getting the reloading stuff now.
I would like to hear about the 257 Weatherby mag
The 8mm-06, especially in its AI form is one of the best rounds for someone not big on recoil and only shoots 400 in.
I own a full custom build to 8mm -06 . I chose it based off of a build I wanted to duplicate from an 1957 article. Now that there are great projectiles from Nosler and Hornady it really performs across the board.
Pls pls pls can we do a show on a weatherby cartridge! Preferably 257 wby pls
Wizzum... 🤢 🤬 🤮
Never heard that term before listening to these videos. Can't unhear it now.
Love these discussions though!
ITS MY FAVORITE WORD
When are you going to do 8mm Mauser?
The 8mm.'06 closely approximates the ballistics of the. 338 '06 a square. It's an accurate, hard hitting cartridge, capable of taking anything on the North American continent, and is a solid performer on African plains game.
Also, 8mm Mauser ammo is more expensive then 30.06 so cost wise if I buy 30.06 and load them to 8mm-06 that is the better way to go IMO. You typically would want brand new cases for necking up to the 8mm-06.
The 8mm-06 was a great game getter, but there was more to making one than running the reamer in. If you did that you would have an inaccurate rifle, you really needed to set the threads back and reface the barrel before reaming. The problem is the 8x57 neck in military rifles is large enough to create an extra shoulder on the 8mm-06.
Two big issues have plagued the 8mm for all these years: First, there are two different bullet diameters associated with German rifles .323 and .320 and that's not the end of it, other countries call .329 diameter 8mm.
The other problem has been bullet availability. You could find two bullet weights in .323, a 170 round nose and a 175 spitzer. Then, just before the 8mm Rem. mag came out a 123 grain spitzer bullet came out, followed by a 220 grain spitzer and then the Remington round came out and a 180 grain bullet became available. These last two were a little tough for any non-magnum velocities, but if you needed penetration they were the ticket.
Great discussion, glad to see the 8mm-06 cartridge mentioned, In some ways it was the most underrated hunting wildcat ever developed.
Let’s see the 8mm Mag and some of the 9.3’s!
I would love to see a video on the rem age barrel nut is it a good choice for people that want to diy and make a old rifle shoot better
.375 Raptor please.
I was just looking at the older guns section of our gun store. I saw a gun that had a boyd stock. So it stood out. I started looking closer and I realized that this gun was a CZ but the strangest thing was the action looked just like a Mauser k98. Rifle it said 8mm-06 24 1/2 inch barrel. I started to piece together they had taken the sights off and there was a scope incl with the gun. Camouflage cheap, has a "W" on the cap,and looks nice though. I put it on their layaway program why did some more research. I'm a hand loader I know that it was going to be a hand load caliber and I didn't want this gem at such an affordable price of $299 to get away. I'm looking for a project done and I figured worst case scenario and I could be wrong I've got a check made k98 action to build a play rifle on. Which for 300 bucks is a little steep for just okay 98 action but those are going up in value as less and less around and they are solid so I can build a pretty heavy duty long range gun on it. I don't know the twist. It looks like it could be the original barrel but the barrel was turned down in two different spots and there are plugged holes where it looks like there was sights attached to that barrel so I'm guessing it's original. Everything was all reblued very nicely I don't understand the multiple turning down of the barrel broadcast like every when is 8 inches is turn down so you have three sections of barrel that are different diameters on the outside
This talk brings to mind the 8MM Remington Mag. Do it if you don’t mind...Maybe you could do it as part of great cartridges that faded. The 264 Win Mag could be included.
6.5&350 rm, 6mm rem,358 win, 264 wm, 358 norma, 8mm rm, 325 wsm, 338 rcm, 7mm & 300 saum, 9.3x64, and 366 sako mag should be on your wish episode. All rounds that should have large cults following,
I enjoy these. 7 mm08 was great. In the same area is the 264 win mag. I'd like to see that one discussed
Obsolete now with the .50-264 BMG
Ryan, Jimmy and Mark great show. The 8x57 or the 8-06 are not getting attention in US just because nobody has paid to be done so. As all European calibres are downloaded at the factory, the publish data also downloaded and even SAAMI specs have special downed the allowed the max pressures. In US the hype and paid campaigns make things look good and desired. The 6x62mm Freres, 9,3x64mm Brenneke, 9,3x66mm Sako, 8,5x63 REB just to name a few, are almost unknown of the public just because nobody makes it great on the shows and the publication do not talk about it, just because they do not get paid to do so. The 8x68S is much older and powerful than a lot of US magnums, yet unknown and underrated. The hype of the short actions is a joke, talking about 0.025 of a second faster? Half an inch shorter? Keep up with your good show. Cheers
Thanks for tuning in, Rolando! We appreciate it :)
Rolando, are you giving off the existential vibe that we can only symbolically ever shoot the gnu, much less be that gnu?
you guys REALLY liked the 350 Legend. well, there's a new cartridge gaining some steam called the 6mm Max out there that's based on the 350 legend case. 6mm ARC type energy and accuracy, but doesn't require the paper thin bolt walls that 6mm ARC and 6.5 Grendel do in AR type weapons. seems pretty cool, definitely has advantages over existing options, and could benefit from some exposure on your platform. could probably even get the guys who invented it on your pod to talk about it.
…you seem to refer to the 8mm Mauser , presume you talking about the 8x57JS!? Hear in Europe this caliber is very popular still….probably behind the 30-06, 9,3x62 if we talk about European Moose hunting.
It would be cool if you could do a comparison between the 8mm06, 8x57JS and maybe the 8x68s!! 👍
35 Whelen!
I'd like to hear a talk on the modern calibres you each DON'T like and why.
It's funny how they describe the happy accident that .30-06 has the same rim diameter as the Mauser cartridge and nobody really mentions that the US adopted a Mauser rifle after discovering the Spanish Mausers were better than their Krag rifles in the Spanish-American war. And since the Spanish Mausers that Springfield copied (and paid licensing fees to Mauser) already used the 12mm rim diameter in their 7mm Mauser cartridge, there wasn't a huge reason to change it. Thus, the .30-06 shares a rim diameter with the Mauser cartridge because it was born from tinkering with a Mauser action. In a roundabout way, the 7mm or 8mm Mauser is the parent of the .30-03 and .30-06 cartridges.
I was around gun shops for the "hot stove league" of cartridge discussions in the 1970's as my grandfather was an avid player. The 8mm was really held back by the American confusion with anything metric, and also the .318 vs .323 mess. The Germans switched the bore diameter (way before the World Wars in 1905) but that didn't stop people saying there were two 8mm calibers floating around and if you ID'ed your bore wrong you would kill yourself with an 8mm. It cursed the 8mm in America!
Barnes makes a 160 grain TTSX for the 8mm. Fantastic bullet that brings the 8mm into a modern playing field.
8mm-06 is awesome! You guys are too young to realize how popular this cartridge was and still is. The Speer 200 grain bullets with a neck up 30-06 Springfield brass is a thumper. Although the 338-06 A-Square cartridge is far superior to the 8mm-06, because of available bullets. The 35 Whelen cartridge is also more popular. Finally High BC bullets are not needed for real big game hunting and I laugh when I hear you guys talk about high BC bullets.
You all missed out on the best part. Mr. Ackley wildcatted this wildcat, That 200 grain Acubond will do close to 3100 fps and higher BC than the 338. On the 7mm Mauser case head and 200 grain bullet, the 8mm AI (or somebody else's improvement, thank you Mr. Rocky) is the one to beat.

8mm discussion...
How about the 8mm Lebel being sporterized by returning WWII vets?
Can y’all do a 10 minute talk on the 6.8 spc ???
Could you do an 8x56r episode.
Manlicher m95 1895 8x50r butt re chamber in 1931 to 8x56r. I have ammo from 1938 and 1939. 1939 have a steel jacket
And please tag me in it so I can watch
What about a wildcat like 22 cheetah, which if I'm remembering correctly off the top of my head is a necked down .308. Or a talk on parent cartridges, their commercial offspring (308 going into 243 and 7mm-08) plus the wildcat cartridges.
Please do the .416 Rigby
How about a 338 Federal?
Just had one in the shop. Like you guys talked about a sporterized FN 98Mauser. Guy tried to chamber 8mm Mauser ammo and it would not lock so I casted it and it is a 8mm-06 by my measurements. Not sure how to post a pic in here.
Ballistically, no real difference between a 303 British, 8 x57, 7.62 x 54R, the 7.7 Arkisaka and the 30-06 or 308.
You should piggy back off this into the old 8mm Poor Man's Magnum. It's an 8mm mauser rechambered to accept an necked down 338win mag to 8mm for mauser rifles.
I have a soft spot for the 8's. Started with the 8x57 that I rebuilt and now I've got an 8x68S and a wildcat in the works.
American 8 x 57 ammo is way downloaded because of old 8 x 57 bullets measured .318 instead of .323 .
The problem you young bucks have is too much money available. These men after the WW2 had very and I mean very little money. If you were making 25- 35 $ a week you could survive but you did not purchase a new Winchester or Remington or Savage.
Longest shot and kill on an animal was in 1988 with a war souvenir 8x57mm mouser in Montana... 674 yards on an elk using the vernier peep sight on the gun
Can you do a segment on the French 7.5x54. A cartridge that was way ahead of its time and totally applicable today for hunting and self protection. Just not much brass....
375 rum 338 rum 300 rum...
The 8 x57 had been loaded in the USA since the early 1900’s. I think what did the 8mm bore in for American shooters was the fact that it was the enemy’s round of choice for a very long time…
Has everyone forgotten the 35 remington and the 358 winchester and the 35 whelan????
I would like to see 270, 280, 270 wsm, and 204 ruger. Great videos. Thanks
How about foing a segment on the 7.65 Argentine/7
65c53 Belgian Mauser !!
I have owned one for 35yrs. I shoot 1k yards. Holds a pattern size of soda can at that range. At 250yards. I can group them in a dime.
You see this in old Speer reloading books. I remember this old 8mm-06. There was another conversion on Mausers called the 8mm PMM (poor man's magnum). It was basically an neckedndown 338 win mag case to 8mm.
Here I am bee-bopping along and listening to VNP. Then all of a sudden...there it was. I hear it. Friggin Wizzim! 😂 Dangit!
You can run but you can't hide! :)
Innovation:
You had a lot of 8mm Mauser with no ammo.
You got a lot of 30-06 bullets and brass. Sounds logical imo
I have 06s & 308s, I own several 8mms . In my opinion it outperformed 06 and my 308 in hunting. And I also love here loading for it I am thinking about chambering one in 8-06, I believe it will be a blast to handload for.
7.5 Swiss
This makes me think if there's an 8mm-08.
I also don't care to Google it, but the name alone should sell.
I have a Romanian 8-06. Factory referebed with black chrome.
As a kid in the sixties my grandfather had a sporterized 8 mm Mauser. I remember it was a beautiful rifle. I don't know if it was 06 or not.
If you haven't already, could you chat about the 338-06?
And im sick till i puke of the 6.5 most overrated cartridge to date period im sick of hearing bout it theyre 20 different cals can out do it on any range given base
My deer rifle for the last 20 years is a an 8mmo6 .I love it , and it has taken a lot of deer .just like you guys said it is a German Mauser model 98
So, considering this modifies a German Mauser, if one were to find one of these for sale does it take away from the Mauser’s value or add to it (since 30-06 brass and more 8mm bullets are available)?
Resale, bro. Its a thing
It will reduce the collector value.
What's up with the 8.6 Blackout ???. Is it really that special
My Grandfather/gunsmith built me one of the gems and I love it, now my son uses it on deer
Didn't really talk about performance?
How about the 7.5 x55 schmidt-rubin?
How about 9.3x62
9,3x62 is an awesome woodland/bush round. A couple of years ago I was determined in my search for a good Carl Gustav 1900/ Antonio Zoli 1900 in 9,3x62, but then a pristine Browning Bar Safari priced 450USD ( 338 win mag) came in the way…
Do you know why the 8mm Mouser is more powerful than the 8-06? I seriously considered getting the 8-06 once but found out that is wasn't as powerful as the 8mm Mauser?
Which is strange for me since the -06 case is larger..
Please also consider talking about the 10.3x68
You have bad information. 8mm-06 isn't loaded by any ammo manufacturer so it's handload only. You can load as hot as you like and it has a larger case volume than 8x57. Choose your powder carefully and work up a load to your liking. I'm getting 2840 fps with a 200 grainer. I don't think an 8x57 will top that.
9.3x62 Mauser would be great

Need to do a ten minute talk on the 300 Weatherby!!
How ‘bout one on dioxins?
@@johngeddes7894 I think they mostly do 10 min talks on cartridges or vortex products lol
But those people had to hand load and it's easier (less steps) to convert 30-06 to 8mm than to convert 8mm to 8mm-06 and then convert 30-06 brass to 8mm-06 brass.
Is there enough material on .308 to convert to 8mm?
Not worth watching with out Ryan!
8mm 06, great hog spanker for the swamps here in the south. Brass is easy to get, neck up that prolific 06 stuff and get the poor man's magnum. One thing about a mauser action, it is controlled feed, huge claw extractor makes it rum in any position in lncuding upside down! Strong and reliable. .323 cones in a few different projectiles and weights, one could even do hard cast I am guessing getting a mold made at a machine shop not too crazy expensive. Love some of the not so vouge cartridges like .300 Savage which almost became a military use but due to the steroer shoulder angle, complicated reloading reliability. It's loadable to .308 all day, with the .39 cal. Bullet offerings and new powders.
My 2¢ worth, OG's rule like OC's (old cartridges)
Ok typos damn auto correct and fat fingers
I would love to see a talk about the 7.62x39
Yes, different platforms, plus its uses and reloading for it.
