  • The DJI Mini 4 Pro 120m limit is back with DJI RC-2 Firmware update 02.00.0100. This limitation to the DJI Mini 4 Pro max height caused a lot of frustration when the drone was launched, but the 120 m limit can now be removed legally. There is a general EASA Drone Rules Update on the DJI Mini series of drones as well going into 2024.
    The official announcement, including the step guide, can be found on DJI View Points: viewpoints.dji.com/blog/dji-m...

    Must admit I'm still confused by this. I recently sold my M3P with a view to upgrade to the M4P (wanted Waypoints and Cruise Control). I do a lot of ultralight hiking in Europe and while it's rare I need to exceed the 120m limit, it's nice to know I can if I need to.

    DJI says after removing C0, you are not able to fly in open category anymore but in specific category. You said something about this in this video but are you sure it will be possible to fly in open category?
    And if so, open category like mini 3, so actually C0 with flying over people etc?

    • @geertstockmans
      @geertstockmans 8 місяців тому

      You have grabbed the catch of all this. Without c0 label, you will fly in 'specific category'. So not allowed anymore to fly over people. A lot of people are wrongly assuming that removing the c0 label of a Mini4 Pro will make it a 'legacy drone', which is somehow a logical approach, but it's not how DJI is looking at things. They are going to limit all 'legacy drones' after 01/01/2024 to the 120m limit also. So any sub250 drone, without that limit will be considered and classified by DJI as a drone in the 'specific cat.' (and for what it's worth, by Easa also, as general CE ruling states that 'manufacturing classification is leading'.

      @@geertstockmans check out the updated DJI statement on this: "They will have to be aware that they will not be able to fly the Mini 4 Pro higher than 120m above ground level in the Open Category as it restricts operations to 120 meters above ground level." In other words, you can continue to fly the drone in A1/A3 open category as a sub 250 legacy drone.

    So basically what all these means is that having the mini 4 pro with the C0 ( you have benefits because of the C0 category) BUT you have the limit of the 120m OR you remove the C0 label, you lose all the benefits of that category but you have the height raised to 500m, which is still illegal to fly. Am I correct here? Cause al the info it's kind of confusing. Great video btw! :)

  • @mroek
    @mroek 8 місяців тому +7

    Henrik, I think you still missed the point that the 120 meter limit (at least from an operational perspective) is the distance to the nearest point on ground, which could be different to altitude above takeoff point if you are for example flying along a mountain/hill side. This is still perfectly legal, but not possible to do with a limited drone due to the technical regulations being different (and enforcing 120 meter of altitude above takeoff point).
    I guess this is not much of an issue in Denmark, though. 🙂 Here in Norway, on the other hand...

      @LetoDK 8 місяців тому +2

      @mrek You need to study the rules some more. It's correct that as far as flying goes, we can fly to 120 m above ground BUT the specific rules for the technical implementations manufacturers have to adhere to, there's a very unique (and frankly stupid) requirements exclusively for C0 drones, that manufacturers have to implement a technical limitation that prevents the drone from flying above 120 m above take-off altitude. This is only the case from C0 drones.

    • @mroek
      @mroek 8 місяців тому +2

      @@LetoDK That's not contradicting what I said, really. The technical 120 m manufacturer requirement prevents you from flying in certain scenarios (up along a mountain, for example), even if the flying itself would have been legal.

    Excellent video Hendrik, this is what many European viewers are waiting for.
    So my Mini 3 Pro was released before December 31, 2023 and therefore I may also fly it in 2024 without a C0 label and I could then theoretically fly it up to 500 meters if I wanted to.
    If I still want a C0 label I can download the special C0 firmware after January 1, 2024 and my drone will be limited to 120 meters.
    So soon you will have Mini 3 Pros flying, in Europe, with two types of firmware.
    That will be quite a job for police or enforcers to distinguish.

    Let me ask you another question about regulations. We have a discussion going on about flying the Mini 4 pro legally at night. Although the Mini has green blinking indicator lights I think these are not enough for flying at night. First they change color due to status and they turn off when starting to record video.
    Applying an external strobe lifts the weight over 250g and its not permitted according to the user manual. So you loose the operating permission. In Germany the LBA told me they will then classify it as a diy drone. After January 1 2024 this means it's only possible to fly in A3. Well the incredible night mode can't be used? So if you’re on a hill 100m above sea level and start flying from there, the drone can only go 20m up? Is that what you mean? That makes absolutely no sense. Surely Dji drone will allow you to go 120m from take off point and if that’s not the case then as I said that is rather silly and they will hopefully sort it out with another update.

Then be aware that you should not fly higher than 120m from the ground where you are flying the drone, otherwise I still foresee problems.

    Hi, I'm confused about why DJI has implemented the 120 m limit based on the takeoff point. I live in Sweden, and according to the Swedish authorities, "transportstyrelsen" the 120 m rule, says that the limit is from the ground directly below the drone, not from the takeoff point. The text in Swedish says, "Tänker du flyga högre än 120 meter?
    Avståndet räknas 120 meter från närmsta punkten på marken direkt under drönaren. Detta är tillståndspliktigt, avgiftsbelagt och kräver ytterligare utbildning.". Translated this means "Are you planning to fly higher than 120 meters?
    The distance is calculated 120 meters from the nearest point on the ground directly under the drone. This requires a permit, is subject to a fee and requires additional training.". This text comes from an explanation about what is needed if you want to fly higher than 120 m. This means that the DJI implementation of the 120 m limit is incorrect or...?

Well that would be dramatic. Did I understand that correctly or am I reading something over the head? Of course, in that case you would never remove the sticker and declassify the drone!
