In this video I replace the front brake pads and rotors on a Volvo 850. Many European cars have the same calipers installed on them. Some even have a very similar caliper installed on the rear locations. These instructions will work on many cars. Be careful not to damage the ABS sensors.
If the pads you are installing has adhesive peal and stick on them, no grease is necessary on the mating surfaces of the caliper to pad contact points.

This is the best brake how to I have seen. The fact that you crack the bleeder THEN push the piston back sets you way ahead of everyone else. Thanks for the video 💋

@@RobertDIY my pin isn’t on there at all and I am not able to take off the rotor. I can feel from behind there’s something protruding in the back but in the front there is no pin. If it was never put on that may explain why the shaking steering wheel when braking hard. Any idea how I can get the rotor off?
I finally got them off but the pins are missing. The lug nut were screeching and almost unable to unscrew. The tire place must have screwed up when we got new ones. Do I need the alignment pin or will it continue to shimmy if I don’t?

Metric allen keys? Who knew? I'll be heading back to the store tomorrow to find a key that's a bit bigger than a 1/4" key. This looked so easy, but I'm afraid we've got a show-stopper. Trying to do front pads on a '96 Volvo 850.
Did you find out which size hex/Allen to use? I know a Torx #47 bit works but is not quite right.
Jerome Munroe 7mm Alan key it's easier to u the adapter like on video N not a big Allen key so u have more leverage
I usually just unscrew the master cylinder cap instead of the bleeder valves to let the pressure off the brake system. I'm not sure if Volvos are different though. I just got my first Volvo. '98 v70 GLT. Quite an upgrade from the Kia Sedona I had.
Probably the same. No need to open either unless you are trying to get rid of air in the caliper.

Hi Robert, I am replacing my front brake dust seal in my volvo 850R and am finding that the dust seal will not stay in the groove in the caliper once the piston begins moving back out. I have tried many times and keep getting the issue despite having a new seal. Any idea what may cause this?
Improper fit or you are not getting it set in properly. I'd just replace the caliper, I can never get those locked in correctly.
Hello have a 1997 Volvo 850 and I recently put new front brakes on from (autozone pads) and clean everything and put anti squeal on back of pads where shims) I keep getting bad brake noise when coming to a complete stop slowly
Only makes noise after 10 mins of driving when brakes are heated up
(Rotors are in good condition too)
Put all clips springs back on
(Not sure why )
I did have a problem with back before where I did have to buy Volvo shims and not the autozone stuff before --just hate to spend dealer prices (for pads and shims)

I have a 1999 Volvo s70 and I need to replace the rear rotors. What do you do if the rear rotors are jammed and won't come off? I already took off the caliper and the 10mm screw.
+Batman Wayne if you are going to replace them, make sure the parking brake isn't set and beat them with a hammer until they come loose.

+skaterpink10 Don't worry about it. A lot of people don't have them. (I think you are taking about the one that stick out into the wheel).
Hi, how freely should those caliper pins slide in? I recently had the brakes done and they were fine for about 1500 miles, now I'm getting a whining sound when I drive between about 15 to 50 mph. I just pulled off the wheel to check if the caliper was sticking, and noticed those 2 caliper slide pins were kind of a pain to pull out. I sprayed them with some Brakleen and put them back in a bit but they still required a bit of force to get them where they needed to go. The weird thing is the noise continues even when I'm applying pressure to the brake pedal. Any ideas? Thank you thank you!!
I plan on getting some grease and spraying out the slots the caliper pins go in with Brakleen and then greasing them again. do you think that's the right course of action or am I looking for a solution in the wrong places? It's definitely more of a whining sound and that wheel definitely gets dirty faster.
+Louis PüŠtank Without hearing the noise I have no idea what is going on there. The pins should move in and out with a smooth fluid motion. Cleaning the pins, holes and applying brake parts grease is the right thing to do.
+Robert DIY I cleaned and greased the pin slots and pins and even though the pins slid in a little easier, still took a bit of force, and the noise remains. Rebuild or replace the calipers? Thanks again
What is the proper torque for the pins? One source I found said 75 lb-ft, another said 22...
+jonezy6056 I'd say more like 22 nm. Those pins are pretty small. Maybe the larger caliper bolts are 75.

Should the front discs be bigger than the rear discs? The previous owner changed the discs but the rear look bigger. the 850 has smaller pads at the back

Question. recently i replaced my rotors and pads using this video (thanks a lot btw! very helpful). However i noticed that the steel plate behind the rotor (on this video at 13.48min) is completely corroded on my car. big holes in it. i can't find out though what that piece is called and therefore cannot order any. Do you think i can do without? i drive a 1997 960 2.5 24v.

+Marmalady Hey Paul, it is a dust shield. It prevents or reduces dirt, small rocks, etc. from getting onto the brakes/brake shoes. I'm not sure anyone sells them. You should probably try to get them from a rust free area is you want to keep them. They are good to have but not a necessity. If you need my help getting a pair go to my website and let me know.
Could you do a video on replacing the front and rear dust shield on an FWD 850? I actually got a fault on my MOT over here in Norway for having rusted trough dust shields and they need to be replaced in order to make the car roadworthy, and i can't seem to find any word around the net on how these are replaced.
Probably not anytime soon. If you pull the wheels and look at them you will probably see the 2 or 3 bolts holding them on.

If the fluid is over 2 years old, you should replace the fluid with new.

What is the size of the Allen bit? I'm about to the rear brakes on my 2005 XC70. Never done an European car before and don't want to run to the tool store after the car is up in the air. European cars are better built for sure, but sometimes their love for Torx and Allen dives me a bit insane.
If the tool list is not in the beginning of the video, I do not know.

The actual size was not mentioned, however the website I was looking to buy the pads suggested a 7mm Allen head socket, later I confirmed this on another video. Thanks again for your tips and videos. Is it possible to introduce air into your brake lines by just replacing the pads?
No. But it is still good to bleed the calipers because there may be air already in the system. Actually, brake fluid should be changed every 2 or 3 years so changing the fluid while doing the brakes.

Good info but in the start you suggested cracking the bleed nut to take off pressure from the pads. You should not do this unless you plan on bleeding the brakes. You will probably get an air bubble in the line and have less brakes from the compression of the air in the line.

No, you can simply push the piston back in. If it doesn't move, it's likely getting stuck and should probably be replaced.

There's only 1 valve for the AC gas normally there's 2 in the car
All have 2, the low pressure service valve and the high pressure test port. They are different sizes.

Thanks, I figured it out, I'm gonna have to go to harbour freight tomorrow for the prybar for the CV axle.
+Heinrich Evers you can also tap a large screwdriver in the gap.
I wound up using a 30" gooseneck prybar at 7 and 2 oclock. just lightly tapped it twice at both those points and it came right out. I'm reassembling it now, just need to do the right torque values on my controller arms, tie rods strut knuckle, etc...

DO NOT open your caliper bleeder valve ! There is no need to. AND when you said you don't wan t to get too much air in the system, you don't want to get ANY air in the system. You can compress the pads or the pistons without ever opening the bleeder. The fluid simply backs up through the master cylinder into the reservoir.
PLEASE post a text over the video telling viewers not to open the bleeder valve. Otherwise, thanks for posting. It' s a great thing to teach folks to do this themselves.
Thanks for watching and for you input. A brake job is a good time for people to replace the brake fluid. Most manuals recommend that the fluid be replaced every 3 years, maybe I'll overlay that.
Robert DIY I think DrumBass98 brought up a good point. Not everyone has the skill, or proper 'tools' to bleed brakes. There's another vid of Volvo brake repair that has a comment posted something like 'oops I did...[xxx] and now HAVE to bleed the brakes, any tips on how to do that?' Yes, vehicle mfg's recommend changing (all) fluids at various intervals - but DIY's all function at different levels.
Well, if it's something that you can't handle, it's best to find a shop to do it for you.

why not just unscrew and take off the brake fluid bottle top under the hood? we all know most times these little screw just break right off when trying to unscrew them.

I hate the rotor pins on Volvos I just remove them and nothing gets damage...
Brake reservoir top? I don't know. I always thought the system has some check valves or some valves to restrict fluid from flowing backwards towards the master cylinder. I have NEVER had one of those relief nuts break. They need to be in working order, that is the only way to bleed the system.
I know I need to keep the gloves on. I usually start with them and end without them. I do try, and do tell others to use them. :p
Maybe more people should take the pins off, less chances of damaging the wheels. Maybe they can cut them down or find a substitute screw.
