I’m starting to wonder if I made the wrong call by just scooping up a bunch of the early Main Range stuff. The more of these reviews I get to the more I find myself going “damn, I wish I had that one.” Maybe I should have cherry picked around a bit more.
I know exactly what you mean. I stopped myself, with: 'Big Finish,' After Issue #2 (Phatmostagora, or something. I don't know, I listened to 14.5 Minutes of it, and then stopped.), and went on the 8th Doctor ones, Again, stopping after Issue #2 (Sword Of Orion, Again, stopping about 15 Minutes into it.) I also regret getting: 'The Reign Of Terror,' Audio Soundtrack. I wish I got: 'The Faceless Ones,' or: 'Fury From The Deep,' instead.
Actually i like Flip and Lisa Greenwood so much to the point where i call her "the future wife" :p. Bill is like a watered down version of her. Also the twist at the end with that Time Lady was outta f*cking nowhere! My favourite line has to be the one by the Doctor after the Valeyard asks him about his precious morals. Perfect foreshadowing to the 7th Doctor.
Lisa Greenwood was the best 6th Doctor original audio companion, other than the late Maggie Stables as Evelyn Smythe. Greenwood and Colin Baker have INCREDIBLE chemistry.
Stubagful, if you go on Spotify the first 5 series of Jago And Litefoot are on there to listen for free. But big Finish is so fucking expensive it’s unbelievable
My problem with End of the Line is that it doesn't really tie in to the overall story. In the final stories, the Doctor and the Valeyard recall events from the previous stories...and End of the Line never gets mentioned. Although I love the twist with the character Keith. That actor really played it off so well
"I dropped myself into end of the line without knowing who Constance was" So did So did most people This came out before her first story. Well I guess that technically makes this her first story but....
The stories with Constance in the Monthly Range adventures starting from Criss-Cross have been nothing short of absolutely excellent (with the exception of Planet of the Rani, which I thought was slightly less so). If you ever feel like listening to some Sixth Doctor stories, those stories come highly recommended from me.
I thank you here and now for getting me into Big Finish. I’ve somehow managed to gather enough money to get quite a lot of their products now. Your 8th Doctor audios got me into it all. Keep making amazing content please. (Your also one of the only UA-camrs who doesn’t have a video I haven’t really enjoyed) anyway, great video, can’t wait for the next one!
Peri and the Piscon Paradox was in fact the first story to fix Peri’s undeath. I totally recommend that story to anyone, btw. It’s probably my favorite BF story of all time. I especially recommend it to people who don’t like Peri, because that story completely changed my outlook on the character.
And let's not forget some of the absolutely amazing stories she had with the Fifth Doctor and Erimem - The Eye of the Scorpion, The Council of Nicaea, The Kingmaker, and Son of the Dragon. All four of those stories are absolutely fantastic places to start for newcomers, considering they're each only $3.
I got it on sale I kinda wish it wasn’t a boxset but maybe 6 stories over so many years like the Forge Arc and I’d have like a story with Evelyn & Peri ... and yeh totally agree with the rest of what you said
Perfect timing! I love your reviews and it just so happens that I had finally just ordered this a few days ago. The box-set is on its way to me now. Looking forward to watching this video after I listen to the stories.
I'm glad the Valeyard was given a 2nd chance in these stories. When the Virgin adventures were written back in the day the writers were told to not attempt giving him a back story as it would complicate things lol.
I can’t believe you dissed the eleventh doctors regeneration. I can see why people don’t like the episode but the final scene is just beautifully acted and perfect in every detail to the point where I cried my eyes out.
They kept the big reveal in The End of the Line reeeeaaally quiet, and I'm glad of it, cause it was a spectacular twist. You drew comparisons with The Red House to Survival, and I'd draw a bigger comparison with Loups-Garox the 5th Doctor/Turlough audio where they go to the planet of the werewolves and basically the soundscape is identical to this one. Really wasn't that impressed. I really got stuck into the fan service with Stage Fright, it really did resonate with me, being easily impressed by the stage puns (which is ironic as you drew me into the rehearsal scene). Although I feel as if the previous story is the stronger one, I do have a guilty affection for The Brink of Death, as it works as the most epic story you could tell in a Sixie style. The part of the plot with the Nathemus was a bit confusing, but also provided a few moments of genuine whathefuckery. Bur it is also a shame that they've retconned the Valeyard’s origins meaning he'll probably never come back anytime soon. The Brink of Death is the last best thing I've heard from Briggs in recent years.
Your description of loups-garoux makes me feel like you haven't listened to it in a very long time, and the fact that you feel it has the Same soundscape as red house is verry confusing to me as aside from the basic concept of werewolves the two stories have almost nothing in common. That and I think loups-garoux is fantastic whereas red house is just alright, but I suppose that's subjective.
There is a clean and easy way to remove Clara and Hell Bent from cannon, Eve from the Sarah Jane Adventures. Eve is an alien that has the power to remove people from existence.
I liked The Brink Of Death, but after literally years of waiting my expectations were way higher than what we got. It all went by so quickly. It wasn't a murderous romp of death and destruction like Caves of Androzani, and it wasn't a big epic story like Spiral Scratch. It's sort of awkward and brief. It fits in with Time and the Rani's abruptness, but instead of a big epic spectacular story, the Sixth Doctor's final story goes by in what feels like five minutes. And it raises the question of which Sixth Doctor is the real one, does he remember any of what happened, will he be left wondering what the hell happened or what happened to the Valeyard... etcetera.
Shout-out to the scene where The Doctor explains the very complicated backstory of The Valeyard and Flip's like: Flip: HE'S DARTH VADER! Doctor: ... It's a bit more subtle than that. Flip: Nah, see, he's you if you go to the Dark Side. Doctor: Oh, very well then. I thought have thought Star Wars was a bit old hat of you, Flip. Flip: Nah! I love Jar Jar!
Hey Stubagful, you can listen to the Fourth Doctor Adventures right now on BBC Radio 4. Here are the first three episodes in the links below: Episode 1 - Destination Nerva: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05vjdd4 Episode 2 - The Renaissance Man: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05wcly7 Episode 3 - The Wrath of the Iceni: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05x22d1 Please note that they are only up for a limited time so if you do want to listen to them, you should do it now before they go off air.
No Excuse now Stu, record them while you have the chance and let us "Stubagful" Fanboys hear your thoughts/review on the first three Fourth Doctor Big Finish Audio adventures, I'm pretty sure these were originally written with Liz Sladen's "Sara-Jane" being the companion but her premature death mean't Big Finish had to re-gig the scripts for Louise Jamesons "Leela" .... Nice Find MB Gamer 31
oops Sorry Sarah Jane....yep that makes sense and they (Big Finish) re-jigged series two for Mary Tamm....Thanks Iain 97 .... Hard to think of anyone else as a companion in "The Auntie Matter" other than the Late Great Mary T.
"After all extermination is what you humans are SECOND best at in the universe"- I fucking love this line. That a Doctor, even a twisted mockery of one like his final incarnation can be that brutally honest about how shit humans are is very refreshing in this age where the Doctor is forced to wax lyrical about how our puny little non entity species is somehow a force for good and or relevant to the wider galaxy.
It’s a shame that Peri didn’t appear in this boxset. I just found it to be fanwanking all the companions big finish gave him, like why was Charley in it? I would have just like 4 4 part stories with 6 and mel set between s23 and s24 with the valeyard in each one.
Doctor Who was slowly deteriorating during Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy's time on the series because the television networks at that time started to focus on doing soap dramas and reality tv shows. That's how it led into the BBC pulling the plug 🔌 on the series for 16 years.
I’ve only really listened to Colin’s audios. I’d especially recommend one doctor, medicinal purposes, curse of Davros, the crooked man, English way of death and the well-mannered war
dammit, woke up with a cold so my voice sounds weird and can't rerecord...if I pin this comment of me acknowledging it d'you think that'll stop people pointing out the same mistake over and over again for months on end? .....nah, people'll start doing it on purpose to piss me off won't they? *rolls eyes*
Stubagful well considering most see final as 13 anyway & there’s no way the Valeyard could fit in between Tennant & Smith then I’ll probably get more comments correcting me
I've not listened to any Valeyard Big Finish yet, so I don't know what they add to it, but if Ten exists twice, then he could relate to the Time Lord Victorious. That was technically between the twelfth and thirteenth (which was the final incarnation before the Time Lords changed history), and the music that accompanied the end of 'Waters of Mars' was called 'Vale' (different to Vale Decem).
Iain 97 The Time Lord Victorious? I could have been SO MUCH more?! (With a not so politely insinuated, "Sorry, but fuck you, Wilf.") The "Man Who Never Would" pulling a freaking GUN on the Time Lord Council?! Yeah, between the Twelfth and Thirteenth (final, until Clara happened) regens. Matt Smith is what came about from 10.2 making the kind decisions.
Also Correction stu. The Valeyard exists between his 12 and final incarnations As in between Tennent after being shot by a Dalek and Somewhere along the doctors future incarnation. The doctors the Valeyard are connected too are Tennent Smith Capaldi and Jodie
idea for a new doctor who story: the doctor finds himself at a furcon, aliens are making people into the real-life versions of their fursonas, and the doctor must stop them from making everybody into anthropomorphic animals.
I'm not sure how I feel about the boxset issue. I know I'm gonna buy every Eighth Doctor release, so Absent Friends didn't bother me personally. If fact I enjoy storing stand alone stories in the middle of Boxsets, like A Day in the Life and so on. I've never personally felt pressured to buy something just for one story... oh wait, the River Song Boxset for the Eighth Doctor... I was this close to not getting it, and they go and plaster him front and centre on the cover... Yeah, it's a sticky issue, and may cause problems for them. Personally, as long as the Set is strong as a whole it doesn't bother me. I have concerns, but still a lot of good will. Anyway, I do like how the Boxset is a showcase of Six as you say. I was annoyed by the lack of Peri and Mel too, but I later rationalised it as "This is a continuation of The Trial of a Timelord, in which those characters have already had stories." I did find the Regeneration scene slightly over-done, but the dynamic of him sacrificing himself without ever knowing about it was compelling as heck. Like this whole time he got a chump death, but secretly it was heroic. Being a canon fixer is a dodgy premise, but 80% of the time they really do work it well. (Some of the Fifth Doctor stories where they give back stories to Fourth Doctor enemies are kind of meh and generic.) My only issue with the Set is how they develop the arc. The conclusion of "I had to give the Doctor bad vibes to power myself up" is so vague and detached from the actual regeneration story, that it almost has nothing to do with the previous 3 stories. I would have preferred that they seeded the alien powering the final story, as its function is so incredibly specific and reverse engineered to fit the needs of the narrative, that it really NEEDED to be set up earlier, in order to not feel contrived.
I can't say the quality of big finished audio dramas but I do have some drama (40k and the Horus heresy) are about £12 not in including collection or when they on eBay or Amazon
Loved this boxset. The Brink of Death was brilliant and gave Colin Baker the emotional exit that he deserved. Recently did a ranking on my channel of the regeneration stories and I put this one pretty high. Also thought end of the line and Stage Fright were just as brilliant and original and different. But I agree not a big fan on the Red House, it felt very gimmicky.
To be fair Stu... The Last Adventure was the First Constance story released... Was released about a month or so before her actual introduction in Main Range... So no one knew anything about Constance at the time of release...
I hate Survival because I didn't mean it I'm just kidding and wanted your attention Stu for some questions Can you afforded to buy Derek Jacobi Master Big Finish stories for a review? Are you going to do another literary review anytime soon?
1 - may do that. heard its really good, that and it is Jacobi 2 - I've pencilled in a book recommendation video for either feb or march. that and I'm not sure yet if I wanna cover Fire and fury by Michael Wolff cause it sounds hilarious, but I dunno if its just covering stuff we already know
If you do get around to starting up the thing again, I'd like to see you do VNA Lungbarrow or Bad Therapy as the good books in the series and Timewyrim Genysis or The Pit as the bad ones.
Another brilliant video! Regarding the 4th Doctor Adventures, I know the price is fucking huge, but have you listened to any of them? If so, what are your thoughts on them?
This Boxset Was Great! Really Cool Ideas My Favorite Was The Red House, Really Cool However, One Thing I Didn't Like Was The End Of The End Of The Line....... SPOILERS Keith As The Master Makes No Sense. Like, Brand New Master Regeneration That's Never Used Again And We Have No Clue About. Didn't Like That, But Loved The Rest! Edit:This Isn't Like McQueen Master Or Dreyfus Master They Were Reused Many Times McQueen Was In Dark Eyes, The 2 Masters Trilogy And Is Gonna Be In Masterful Dreyfus Was In The Psychic Circus And The Home Guard
Spoilers: Keith wasn't a new incarnation of the Master. He was an Avatar of the Anthony Ainley Master. A faux body he was manipulating because he was afraid of being affected by the dimensional anomalies in that region. Also it was a way to have the Ainley Master involved with the story without having to find an Ainley impersonator since the actor sadly died a while back. His identity was explained in the narrative. And in the special feature interviews they say the rest of what I just said.
I’ve got a question because I’m quite confused about the price of big finish in Australia and how there seems to be little strange because it seems cheaper when you factor in exchange rates. ( the download for the last adventure is 30 AUS) so could you tell me how much it coasts know
Well, I agree to a certain extent. The first six Doctors and the Eighth Doctor are pretty easy to follow and so are the War and Tenth Doctor stories. They all take place during very obvious and often-times stated areas in canon. But the Seventh Doctor stories... It's hard to tell even what's taking place after what or when and I find that the most recent adventures taking place with Mel and Ace undermine the character development Ace and the Seventh Doctor have gone through up until that point on audio.
I would have preferred a standard box set rather than the dumb book thing. Even better would have been a 6 part standalone story. Bear in mind I haven't listened to it yet.
I was really disappointed that Colin's final adversary was the Valeyard. It's like Big Finish thought that since the Valeyard was Sixie's final baddie on the TV, he should be the final baddie of the sixth Doctor's entire life. And I don't like it. I'd actually rather have had an adaptation of 'Spiral Scratch', the novel that also covers the sixth Doctor's demise. Also, I'm super disappointed by the fact that Frobisher isn't a companion in any of these stories! They could have done like in Eight's 'Company of Friends' and had one companion from a different media in each story... but nope...
Meh. BF diluted Six to the point that he's barely recognisable. So saying goodbye to their essentially alternate Doctor is actually less engaging than watching McCoy in a wig and some dodgy effects.
"I was a bit disappointed by how tiny Mel's role was."
LEAVE THE GIRL, IT'S THE MOAN I WANT.
I’m starting to wonder if I made the wrong call by just scooping up a bunch of the early Main Range stuff. The more of these reviews I get to the more I find myself going “damn, I wish I had that one.” Maybe I should have cherry picked around a bit more.

Yessss, please more Big Finish content!
DUDE FUCK OFF
No
@@stephenbutterfield4456 woah, chill mate, we're all doctor who fans here, chill.
@@stephenbutterfield4456 what? Why?
The line "If we fight like animals we'll die like animals" alone, makes the episode "Survival" worth it
The first 50 main range stories and a lot of the Fourth Doctor, Jago and Litefoot, and lost stories are on Spotify.
JackIntheBox really? Sweeet
Kevin the Cow lol niiiice. Too bad it's all shuffled
Kevin the Cow ahhhh, shoot. That really sucks huh? Lol
Riain Biehle No it won't be shuffled on your phone, it's never done that for me
They also added EDAs Series 1 and Companion Chronicles Series 2
Bonnie Langford as Mel is a revelation on Big Finish. She’s amazing
There was also the 2005 BBC Past Doctor Adventure novel: “Spiral Scratch”, that tried to explain the Sixth Doctor’s regeneration as well
I love the Timothy Yardvale name. It means I can have him say "I have had many names... and many faces... but there are some who call me... Tim!
Also in Peri and the Pyscon paradox it turns out ALL Peri endings are canon
The definitive exit for Old Sixie in my opinion, this has become my favourite regeneration scene
Found this channel a few years ago and never listened to big finish at the time. Now it's my favorite way to indulge in Doctor Who.
He's using reverse psychology! Quick, ask him to do jago and litefoot, and the 4th doctor series!
The first 5 seasons of Jago & Litefoot are on Spotify, and i highly recommended it, in my opinion it is the best Doctor Who Spin off
First 5? I'e only found 2
5 SEASONS!?
Stubagful, if you go on Spotify the first 5 series of Jago And Litefoot are on there to listen for free. But big Finish is so fucking expensive it’s unbelievable
First 8 on Audible if you have t'wherewithall.
the new logo of Stu makes him looks like the eighth doctor
My problem with End of the Line is that it doesn't really tie in to the overall story. In the final stories, the Doctor and the Valeyard recall events from the previous stories...and End of the Line never gets mentioned.
Although I love the twist with the character Keith. That actor really played it off so well
You HAVEN’T shelled out £400+ for all Jago and Litefoot releases? Boo on you Sir! Boo I say!
"I dropped myself into end of the line without knowing who Constance was"

This came out before her first story. Well I guess that technically makes this her first story but....
The stories with Constance in the Monthly Range adventures starting from Criss-Cross have been nothing short of absolutely excellent (with the exception of Planet of the Rani, which I thought was slightly less so). Night Of The Whovian would ABSOLUTELY be written by Nev Fountain.
Due to stuff getting shifted about this was actually everyone’s first meeting with WWII WREN Mrs Constance Clarke
I thank you here and now for getting me into Big Finish. I’ve somehow managed to gather enough money to get quite a lot of their products now. Your 8th Doctor audios got me into it all. Peri and the Piscon Paradox was in fact the first story to fix Peri’s undeath. I totally recommend that story to anyone, btw. It’s probably my favorite BF story of all time. I especially recommend it to people who don’t like Peri, because that story completely changed my outlook on the character.

I actually love Peri especially with the 6th cause she was needed to change his personality for the better.

Doctor Who was slowly deteriorating during Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy's time on the series because the television networks at that time started to focus on doing soap dramas and reality tv shows. That's how it led into the BBC pulling the plug 🔌 on the series for 16 years.
Stage Fright is my favourite story in this wonderful boxset.
I usually wait for a sale to quell my Big Finish buying urge. Currently half way through The Last Adventure, enjoyed it so far.
I also love Survival, one of my favourite Master stories
I’ve only really listened to Colin’s audios. I’d especially recommend one doctor, medicinal purposes, curse of Davros, the crooked man, English way of death and the well-mannered war

The Valeyard exists between his 12 and final incarnations

The doctors the Valeyard are connected too are
Tennent
Smith
Capaldi and

Just listened to the first 3 8th doctor releases and all I can say is...
Still better than Moffat

I am sooooooooooo glade you did this, because I love this boxset even though it dose have a few problems.

Being a canon fixer is a dodgy premise, but 80% of the time they really do work it well. (Some of the Fifth Doctor stories where they give back stories to Fourth Doctor enemies are kind of meh and generic.)
My only issue with the Set is how they develop the arc.
Have you listened to the war master set yet, it's great
I can't say the quality of big finished audio dramas but I do have some drama (40k and the Horus heresy) are about £12 not in including collection or when they on eBay or Amazon
Genesta made me think of 13 which kind of spoiled the reveal that she is just a projection of the Valeyard.
so stu, what did you think of the portrayal of that villain in The End of the Line that was from classic who that I'm not gonna name because spoilers?
i thought this was great love letter to good ole sixie. i adore flip. the valeyard has a GREAT voice. big finish mel is terrific.
To be fair Stu... The Last Adventure was the First Constance story released... Was released about a month or so before her actual introduction in Main Range... So no one knew anything about Constance at the time of release...
The first and last stories I'd be interested in. Not sure about the middle two.
13:58 10 didn’t give a speech. He died alone, sad, and bitter.
I hate Survival because
I didn't mean it I'm just kidding and wanted your attention Stu for some questions
Can you afforded to buy Derek Jacobi Master Big Finish stories for a review?
Are you going to do another literary review anytime soon?
1 - may do that. heard its really good, that and it is Jacobi
2 - I've pencilled in a book recommendation video for either feb or march. that and I'm not sure yet if I wanna cover Fire and fury by Michael Wolff cause it sounds hilarious, but I dunno if its just covering stuff we already know
If you do get around to starting up the thing again, I'd like to see you do VNA Lungbarrow or Bad Therapy as the good books in the series and Timewyrim Genysis or The Pit as the bad ones.
YAYYY!
damn you and your prices big finish! i want to listen to the end of the line!
Will you ever do a review of Classic Doctors, New Monsters Volume 2 - or at least the Eighth Doctor story in that set?
Another brilliant video! Regarding the 4th Doctor Adventures, I know the price is fucking huge, but have you listened to any of them? If so, what are your thoughts on them?
This Boxset Was Great!
Really Cool Ideas
My Favorite Was The Red House, Really Cool
However, One Thing I Didn't Like Was The End Of The End Of The Line.......
SPOILERS
Keith As The Master Makes No Sense. Like, Brand New Master Regeneration That's Never Used Again And We Have No Clue About.
Didn't Like That, But Loved The Rest!
Edit:This Isn't Like McQueen Master Or Dreyfus Master
They Were Reused Many Times
McQueen Was In Dark Eyes, The 2 Masters Trilogy And Is Gonna Be In Masterful
Dreyfus Was In The Psychic Circus And The Home Guard
Spoilers:
Keith wasn't a new incarnation of the Master.

Oooohhhh, OK
I Never Listened To The Interviews, So I Didn't Realise
Thanks For Clearing That Up!
I’ve got a question because I’m quite confused about the price of big finish in Australia and how there seems to be little strange because it seems cheaper when you factor in exchange rates. ( the download for the last adventure is 30 AUS) so could you tell me how much it coasts know
I don’t understand why people think Big Finish mess up canon even more
Like where does that myth come from ?
Well, I agree to a certain extent. The first six Doctors and the Eighth Doctor are pretty easy to follow and so are the War and Tenth Doctor stories. They all take place during very obvious and often-times stated areas in canon. But the Seventh Doctor stories... It's hard to tell even what's taking place after what or when and I find that the most recent adventures taking place with Mel and Ace undermine the character development Ace and the Seventh Doctor have gone through up until that point on audio.
Reconditions for big finish main range/ main range bundles
Heyo you should watch Westworld
It's amazing, in fact, it's more than amazing :)
and right up your alley.
Hey Stu. Stu could you recommend some more Big Finish this year Stu?
No matter the quality of anything
Once there is a pay wall people won’t pay no matter how little
You don't have to but could you recommend some slightly scarier big finish works?
Dude you totally have Russel Crowe's mouth. Now that it's not hidden. :)
I loved The Last Adventure.
Question, (WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR THE 6 AND CHARLEY ADVENTURES)
Was the Charley in the red house actually Charley or Mila?
Probably Charley but 6 remember it as Mila
We need a new intro now.
What would your thoughts be if Big Finish started making original content that wasn't "based off" anything?
Harry of Solihull Actually they just started a new range called "Big Finish Originals" that will do precisely that.
Wow. What an age we live in.
How do you find jago and litefoot on spotify
Just so people know this boxset is on amazon for £27 at the moment, sadly my bank account is non existent.
I would have preferred a standard box set rather than the dumb book thing.
Even better would have been a 6 part standalone story.
Bear in mind I haven't listened to it yet.
£410... talk about highway robbery.
I miss the old avatar.
They could have done like in Eight's 'Company of Friends' and had one companion from a different media in each story... but nope...
WHAT?
Reverse Werewolves 😄
Watching you complain about Big Finish's obsession with box sets is just depressing in retrospect. I really do miss when they did individual releases.
What the hell is quid? I thought you used pounds?
Slang:
US:
Dollars = 'bucks'
UK:
Pounds = 'quid'
Weird
Hey ever thought about reviewing fan made content
Lol
Meh. BF diluted Six to the point that he's barely recognisable. So saying goodbye to their essentially alternate Doctor is actually less engaging than watching McCoy in a wig and some dodgy effects.
