Hey Ward, thanks for the video. It was heaps of fun to watch. When I open cases I keep plastic and metal putty knives handy as well as the spudgers. Once I get the first clip released I will stick a putty knife in at that location to keep it open while I work through the rest of them. And sometimes the putty knife turns out to be the best tool to start opening the case as well.
I swapped out a bad HD with a new WD CMR 2TB 2.5" and turned on the unit, it says starting up and the green light is blinking !! Is it formatting the drive or do I need to restart the unit or check connections ?
Great video, thanks. I appreciated your comment about the HDD size. I don't want an external drive. It makes me think I could install a SATA SSD since they are the same or similar form factor and size, although more money. Do you know if an SSD would work in a TiVo Edge?
Actually, I just read that SSD's are not recommended for TiVo's because of the constant writing to the drive. SSD's do better with more 'reads' than 'writes'.
No. I finally decided at I was too scared of the "new experience" UI and moving my old recordings over looked like a big PITA, so I sold it "as is" on eBay for, like, $40.
I can't speak to the plans, but I'm sure the OTA guide is supported because my (even older) Roamio (which I have an on ancient annual plan) still gets it and is working fine.
I have an TiVo edge and just wanna make the make the HD bigger. There is a sea gate 4TB Sata on Amazon, can I just swap it out and it will format etc? I do not care about losing my current recordings
Not dumb at all. My buddy Kate bought it and when it didn’t work, put it aside for 6 months before giving it to me. I called TiVo first thing and asked if I could exchange it and they said no, but I could buy a new one at a discount! So…
@@WardCo What I don't get - why don't they have a servicing menu with options along the lines of chkdsk - which would reboot the system into a HD test, lock out bad blocks, etc. A lightly used Edge like mine should not have HDD problems after 2 years. Plus basic troubleshooting should be accessible without crazy rebooting methods..
@@rontroy3843 I have the same problem on a lightly used December 2020 500 GB Edge for Antenna. Replacement HDD is $17 🙄 Might as well buy several at a time.

Brilliant, Ward you're a man of many talents.

btw where is your video for installing homebrew on the mac to format this drive ?
Do you think the fan is replaceable? Mine is a bit loud
Same here all flashing lights in windows just format the drive any particular setting ntfs ? Fat32 dumb question
How thick is this OEM hard drive in the Edge? Is it 7 mm?

SSDs do not work. CMR HDDs do.
Just curious, do you know if the TiVo is still functioning after the disk reformat?
No. I finally decided at I was too scared of the "new experience" UI and moving my old recordings over looked like a big PITA, so I sold it "as is" on eBay for, like, $40.
Nov. 5, 2022. is the tivo edge OTA with no monthly fees still supported? and still provides OTA guide?
I can't speak to the plans, but I'm sure the OTA guide is supported because my (even older) Roamio (which I have an on ancient annual plan) still gets it and is working fine.

Or just put a solid state drive in...
I thought Tivo did not allow you to transfer service to a new TiVo dvr. Or is that only a restriction for lifetime service?
Must be. I buy it a year at a time in November. Not sure they offer that anymore. I've been a Tivo user since the original unit came out.
I have a TiVo edge antenna I think it has a power supply issue or a hard drive issue. Can you fix it for me?
No sorry. Swamped with other stuff.
ok Dumb question, if this was bought new, why not return immeadatly if defective?
Not dumb at all. My buddy Kate bought it and when it didn’t work, put it aside for 6 months before giving it to me. I called TiVo first thing and asked if I could exchange it and they said no, but I could buy a new one at a discount! So…

❤ should I just change the hard drive
Did it stay working?
Seems so. Finally sold it on eBay.

@@rontroy3843 Preaching to the choir here, Ron. You are absolutely correct.

Looks like it’s been rode hard and put up wet 🎉
