The Canton of Ticino, is one of the 26 cantons forming the Swiss Confederation. It is composed of eight districts and its capital city is Bellinzona. It is also traditionally divided into the Sopraceneri and the Sottoceneri, respectively north and south of Mount Ceneri. Red and blue are the colours of its flag. During the Middle Ages Ticino was part of the Commune of the Lombard town of Como. Through the following centuries it was part of the Duchy of Milan, until the Milanese army was defeated by the Swiss confederates and Ticino was annexed to Switzerland. Today it is still part of Switzerland and its official language is Italian, even if the local language is a local variant of the Lombard language.
