Thank you, Quint, for this amazing video. Our family acquired its first Etch-a-Sketch at Christmas 1960, and we took it on vacation with us the following Summer. My siblings and I spent hours playing with it as my parents drove us hundreds of miles down the two-lane highways that still served most of the country back then. I had always dreamed of being able to control it with the precision you've demonstrated with your contraption. It is exhilarating to watch it in action.
Quite bluntly, you are just straight out a terrific Dad. Hope all the kids around you can appreciate all you do. Top Marks sir. More people in the world like you would make it a better place to live.
Hey look, buddy. I’m an engineer. That means I solve problems. Not problems like, “What is beauty?” because that would fall within the purviews of your conundrums of philosophy; I solve practical problems.
Pretty fantastic! For science fairs, the trend may be to change the name to science and engineering fairs. This more engineering than science. With that name change, dropping the requirement for a hypothesis, which is generally contrived, more would likely be excited about the science fair. Keep on building cool stuff!
There was a time in history where the line between science and engineering, and even art and philosophy, was blurrier. I think it's all part of the same human pursuit of knowledge. In this day and age the humanities are long-divorced from real science, but the marriage between engineering and science can be made stronger. Let's be honest, kids just want to have some fun, and robots are better than their mom's Candy Crush phone.
This is awesome I just bought myself An Etch-a-Sketch and was playing with it wondering about all of the neat things that I could do with it and I found Your video thank you
Dude, your channel is going to blow up with subs. I predict 2 million by next year. This is amazing content and you always get straight to the point, no stupid long intros.
This is amazing. Been thinking try building this for a while. Thanks for showing it :) When I saw you shaking it I thought it defenetly needs a automatic shaker motor in there to reset it :P
*Dude this is amazing, i see this channel growing exponentially, unlike other "tech/diy" youtubers you actually make interesting cool unique projects that anyone not lazy or stupid could follow and learn from, very much bigclivedotcom vibe, but american. Amazing job man. You have a pleasant personality.*
My son and I are having a good laugh over your username! 😂 Thank you so much for the tremendous compliment. These videos have been sitting with very little attention for some time so it's exciting to finally see them start to take off! We'll see where it leads!
@@QuintBUILDs lol, yeah, i got a recommendation so thats a good sight this channel is now being promoted to people, you should start seeing more traffic
That's really cool.. I had thought about doing something similar, but I'd never have thought (or have the patience) to make a MOVIE out of this thing! (maybe you need it to shake itself clear in version 2, so it can be automatic??).. And.. did you win the science fair!? There REALLY should be an adult category in all local science fairs, to let the kids see what others can do!!
My kids' elementary school has parent-made exhibits for the kids to play with. I built a smoke cannon and a leaf blower that shoots pingpong balls across the gym. I did see one etchasketch on UA-cam that pivots on a turret to reset itself, but I like the portability of this one.
Instead of manually shaking, could a vibrating or shaking base work? I'm sure you could test by touching it with an electric sander or something just to see if the effort would be worth it.
I thought he was gonna animate it by adding electronics to shake it automatically and draw images in real time. But there's no way even he's talented enough to do that.
you could make scaffold that goes over it and holds a stylus, have the stylus linked in x and y to the x and y knobs and you're done! (Yes i'm aware that kind of defeats the purr-pose of an etchasketch)
Who here spent hours as a kid, twisting those knobs to laboriously scrape away all the silver stuff so they could see the mechanism inside an Etch-A-Sketch?
Automatically drawing etch-a-sketch doesn't have a vibration motor to auto reset. There's just something about that which seems, idk, slightly perplexing.
@@QuintBUILDs Fair enough, though, I still see this as a technical problem begging for a solution. Being that the powder contains polystyrene particles, could you utilize some sort of electrostatic field effects to redistribute it. Perhaps a foil layer behind the screen into which an ac voltage is fed to vary an electric field between it and a grounded(or oppositely charged) indium tin oxide coated glass front?
Well, I say "could you" but obviously only testing would see if the polystyrene particles can overcome the tendency of conductive powder to clump in strong fields, so yeah. I guess that comment should be more of a humble suggestion than a question.
I wish I had time for the fun projects you do. Do i have a cnc no but could make one. Do I have a 3d printer yes. Work shop for all sort of repairs, got computers UA-cam, yep humm a cnc machine Um nope, but wait I have all the other stuff lets make a cnc machine great. Dang gotta go make some repairs, no more time dang it.
I'm surprised you didn't put an autoshaker on it so that at the end of the drawing it takes a picture, shakes it, and then draws the next drawing. Still pretty cool though, similar to how a 3D printer works.

I love when your old video are recommended.. this is awesome.
Glad to hear it's still getting some exposure! 👍

"Then i remembered, im an engineer!" Nothing that starts like this ends well
Oh, you know engineers? ;-)
Hey look, buddy. I’m an engineer. That means I solve problems. Not problems like, “What is beauty?” because that would fall within the purviews of your conundrums of philosophy; I solve practical problems.
Well I say engineers haven't gone too far enough!
Yeah. How many mechanical engineers have you built for? Oh there's a column there? Yeah someone could weld that..
As long as there are no wheat mediums around, we’ll be fine
I'm so glad we've got people like you and it's not just a bunch of me's and my friends running around on our own..
Most underrated channel on UA-cam
Agreed!
THIS IS UNDERAPPRECIATED AND NEEDS MORE VIEWS IMMEDAITELY
Wow!
All of that was so impressive, but the circle for it's simplicity yet well known complexity to make was the most impactful for me.
Bloody clever. People say I'm clever and I always say not really because I know what clever can do and what you've done is far beyond me.
That cat video part was like one of the cutest things ever!

This is one of the most under rated pieces of youtube gold.. You’re amazing man!
Wow, thank you!
Quint BUILDs thank you for all the great content!
You're actually amazing, one of the best builders on UA-cam!

"Wifi's so slow"
For me, this is 5x faster.
😂
You started with a sketch, then you CNC'd it.
That's some big-boy etch-a-sketch.
Omg I knew it was gonna be the enterprise

Nice channel 👍 you just got a new subscriber
The best channels always uploads once a month. You are GOLD! Subscribed! 😊
You would have made my life so much better if I got to see this at my school when I was a kid. Instead I became a drug addict.
What a creative project!

1:23 look closely. He got us. God damn it
I love it! Now put an auto shaker in it, attach the camera eye to the box and add some more software to make it make the videos itself.
Congratulations you just made the first pc
Great and informative. Watched the other videos too. Thank you
You should make it so you take a picture of something and it draws it on the etch a sketch. Put a camera on it and then say cheese.
This is absolutely amazing!! could you walk us through the details more🙏?!
EDIT: subscribing to Build 2 now !!!
Brilliant video 👌
I had one when I was 6, and my gran drew a circle, I could never do it, I thought she was a magician
BRILLIHANT
Greats from Brazil
All it needs now is a auto-shake delete mechanism! Great work. o7
amazing! you deserve more views
Nice idea.. You are a man of quality

My God isnt this Cool? Awesome!!
I subscribed for you man. Great job!
In the future, animators will be replaced by robots and AI. This innovation will surely make updates in manga, mawha and anime fast and not costly.
It starts with a dot, a dot that's hot! The etch-a-sketch animator!
Pretty cool man
awesome and amazing

as impressive as this is it becomes a whole lot less impressive when you see what people can draw on an etch a sketch by hand :D
Мужик выглядит как слесарюга в каждом втором нашем автосервисе )
You should try and build a "self shaker" of sorts. That way you could let it run over a long period of time and make some pretty elaborate animations!
you could make scaffold that goes over it and holds a stylus, have the stylus linked in x and y to the x and y knobs and you're done!

Great work man working so hard

I'm a medical student and I don't even know what that is ( ಠ ▵ ಠ)?

It looks like a Toy Story Movie etch a sketch like a toy is alive
Nerd, happy? Eh joke.. nice video bro.

To quote Bill Nye "Science rules"

Hey Quint, great video! What's the chart under the periodic table at your workbench, Sir?
Thanks! It's a resistor color code chart I believe.
Reminds me of This old Tony....
Automatically drawing etch-a-sketch doesn't have a vibration motor to auto reset.
There's just something about that which seems, idk, slightly perplexing.
All the powder falls to the bottom inside. vibration may work once or twice but not repeatedly.

You should make it where it shakes at certain rates to get transparency and shades

*Hey, I'm an engineer.*
*That means i solve problems.*
GhostMiner but not problems like, what is beuty?
Because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy.
i solve practical problems. for instance, how am i gonna stop some big mean motherhubbard from tearin me a structurally superfluous new behind?
The answer? Build a gun.
You should add an auto erase feature for this thing.
add a vibration motor for automatic resetting, then you can have it make videos all on its own :P
2:00 you forgot to make another machine to reset it!
Wow
I’m guessing you turned the image files into .cad files then ran them in a CNC program on the raspberry pie? Or did you run the cnc program on a pc?
