How to bypass security system in 2004 Chevy Impala (easy)

- 1. Once key is in the ignition, turn to “on” position. Make sure you do not get out of the car while doing this.
2. Once in on position, wait 10 minutes. No exceptions!
3. After 10 minutes, turn key to “off” position and count to 10.
4. Start car as normal!
*2019 update: you can get out of the car while doing this*
Mine only does it once a year or so. I come back to this video every time I can’t remember. Also when the turn signals stop working push the hazard light button off and on a few times. This I have to do once a month. Thanks for the video.

Worked on my 04 imapla. Also I didn't have to wait the full 10 minutes. I only waited until the security light stopped blinking. Thank you!

i noticed my light stopped blinking sooner than 10, but waited it out just to be safe. glad to know it worked once light stopped flashing
But if you time it out at least in my Impala the light stops blinking right around the 10 minute mark

Key weight causes this, don't put anything but the key in the ignition cylinder. Don't have other keys on the ring. Nothing, just put the key in. The extra weight Fs up the lock cylinder and eventually causes this because it thinks it's being broken into.
I actually heard a click in the dash around ten minutes turned it to off counted to ten and started right up thank you

You can take the negative off of the battery for 10 seconds and put it back on. It will start. I have the same car

I was replacing a battery for a customer and the car wouldn’t start after i put the new battery in, and the customer was upset because it wouldn’t start so I decided to get on UA-cam and thats when i found your video. I did the same process you did but i only waited 1 min instead of ten cause i was in a rush, but it started lol!

The only thing I can add to this is, for me it’s not 10 min... it could be 3 min and could take up to 30 min. The thing I have to wait for is for the security light to stop flashing and then, turn key to off wait 10 seconds and starts.
Also it’s normal for the battery light to be on when the key is in the on position, until the car is started.
Its gonna keep doin it until u fix your check engine light

I seen versus video on how to bypass security for this make and models
I tried disconnect the battery pulling fuses to the radio other components..
Also
going through the car stereo has a built in factory settings to bypass security a lot of people don't know about also..
I found out on mine vehicle its a key ignition was bad
it was loose in the dashboard I can wiggle the whole ignition..
To go through
the car stereo you turn off the radio on the bottom nob
Then you push in center of the nob and hold it for like 10 seconds then it will beep it should show settings
and then hit the arrow button to a selected settings you want and then push in the bottom nob in center of the nob and hold until it beeps it will shut off and wait a for like 5 minutes then it should start..
Personally
I go to setting factory set or all settings..
That should work also..

My key will only turn over after shutting it off if I wiggle the key around, but it must trigger the security because nothing will happen when turned over after wiggling it. What I did was not turn the key completely off but to the point everything shuts off, and pull the key out. It seems to work, just until I can buy the cylinder.
Well I never heard of this hack, I don't know where you got it from, but all I can say is thank you! You saved my butt from a bill that only a dealership could create. If it wasn't for you it would have been dealership bound. Where else do you take a car when it does this? One is almost forced to be slapped by their iron hand. Thank you so much!
Well I knew the security system was locking my vehicle out occasionally so I took it in for a diagnostic and the diagnostic cost me $155 to figure out they were going to charge me another $1,400 fix the problem. I gave him 150 and took my keys and left. This actually should be a class action lawsuit against General Motors. This is a very very common problem and potentially life-threatening. Can you imagine someone's about to rob you and you can't start your car to get away, or you have a medical issue or who-knows-what the emergency could be. You just can't sit there and wait for 10 minutes while you are dying of a heart attack was someone trying to murder you. And some people aren't going to be immediately aware of exactly what's going on with the vehicle all the know is it's not going to start. I could see a starter motor going or something of that nature but this completely lockes the owner out of their own vehicle. This is and should be a recall.

The Impala 3800 Series is the most reliable car ever made by GM...
It is in fact a BUICK BLOCK
And Yes, all Impala between 2000 & 2005 have an actual FACTORY RECALL for a faulty ignition design causing whole ignition system to suffer at one end or the other...
If your Impala falls within those years I suggest you replace your ignition switch all together and only hang that one key on it no more + treat it with care...
(They have a weak design )

My 2001 impala has a sensor on top of dash. It looks like a tiny glass ball. If you put a flashlight on it. Head & tail lights will shut off in 1 minute.
Saves your battery from going dead. While doing this relearn procedure.

Mine might be a different issue but it looks much the same. When the engine will not turn over I simply press the door unlock button (either on the key fob or on the door) three times. Then the car starts!

Sometimes you have to repeat the steps 3 times. If that doesn't work you're screwed. Make sure your battery is fully charged when you do this. Also count to 30 after the ten minutes when you turn it off. The security light should turn off by itself after the 10 minutes.

One of my vehicles is the exact same an 04 Impala and I have the same problem with it security system thinks you're stealing it and locks you out. What's actually wrong causing it does a body sensor and ignition sensor that both become defective overtime, the only way to solve it is to replace both sensors to the tune of about $1,400. The car's not even worth $1,400. This has happened to many people and even the Chevy dealership told me that it is a common problem. That being said it sounds like it should be recalled and fixed on their dime it is an engineering error on Chevrolet part. However I did speak to someone at a local AutoZone and they said how they fix it is they take one of the keys that has a chip embedded in it zip-tied underneath the steering column just underneath the dashboard and then you will be able to start the car with any key doesn't matter if you have the chip in it or not. They told me this works for them a hundred percent of the time you just have to leave the original key taped or zip-tied underneath the dash column. That way you will not break the signal it is sending to the security system and anytime you go to start it it will recognize the code coming from the key because the connection was never broken. I haven't tried this yet I just found out today but I'm going to get an extra key cut and give it a shot hell lot better than $1,400 and if it works this guy is a genius.
I also thought I might add that sometimes my car would not start and up popped the security light but I turned "off" the key for ten minutes and then started the car, which usually worked.
I will try this next time. This happened to me 3 times in this past month. I do it another way. I put key to ON position. I hold the TUNE/DISP button on radio for 10 seconds. I scrolled to ORIG SET, using the SEEK PSCAN button, the hit #2 NEXT button to Set All, pushed DISP button. DONE shows up. Then scrolled to EXIT. Started right up.

After I start the car then turn it back off it make me go threw the process again,like I got it to start but then after 10 minutes of my car being off it won’t start back up
If you wait ten min anyhow it will start back up .with out taken the chance of burning your ignition up by having it on.Also if you press the tuner button with your radio off .it will pull up the settings for the security go thru the settings using the seek button to do it ,go to factory settings and push the tuner button ,you just reset your security
I installed a new ignition and key in my 04 Impala and I had to go to the start position first, release key to the on position, wait until the security light disappeared and turn key to off position. I had to repeat this sequence three times to program the new key.

Dont have to count to ten, but the rest is correct. You can just turn it back to the off position & back to on then turn key and presto!

You don't have to wait in the car or even leave the key in. You just have to wait 10 minutes or so and go back and it'll turn over after a few attempts. Just had to do it.... again! It's super irritating, along with the issues 04 Impala has with traction control malfunctioning.
Traction control thing is the wire that runs thru passenger door it gets kinked and rots from snow and salt, making a connection and then isn't setting of traction control drove me crazy makes anti lock brake noise, pedal pulsates, video on UA-cam for that too
Or the wire at the hub, same thing, patched that wire. Problem fixed bout 20 mins

I no longer have the vehicle but I had it for 10 years and at first it was just a couple times a year but then increased to a couple times per month during the last year I had.
You aren't bypassing the system, you're resetting it. If the security system (Passlock 2) is bad, this won't work. It sounds like yours is failing if this is happening occasionally. There will be a point that it won't work. You need to have the system permanently bypassed.

@@j.h6283 just replace the lock cylinder. If you buy an aftermarket cylinder you will need to keep your old key in case you need to lock doors or open the trunk. I believe you can order one from the dealership that is "keyed" the same as factory so you can use the original key. I prefer the cheaper two key system.
If you have to do this more than 1 time it's the key switch. It has magnets in it that go goofy etc. Replace it with a top quality brand. Easy to do. Key for a 2005 impala does NOT have any chip in it. None. It's the key switch. No u CANNOT do a wire bypass on that year either so I found out with the resistor trick.

You can leave you don't have to do shit. As soon as you flip it the first time you can pull your keys out and leave and it will still reset.
I've tried leaving like usual, hasn't worked in about 4hrs..

@@denacombs3009 if it makes a clicking sound when you attempt to turn over then it’s likely your starter. If no sound at all, it could be battery or alternator.
changed the lock cylinder and did this so many times and nothing worked

You have to leave the key in the hall time
Another fix is to disconnect the negative battery terminal. Spray out the ignition switch with contact cleaner. The soak the key in contact cleaner and wiggle it in the switch. Wait 15 minutes, reconnect the battery and it should start.

OK you can do it, but if you do it to many times your car will not start again because you messed up the computer
It's not the fix. It states in the owners manual to get out and lock the doors and wait 5 minutes. I'd wait 6. Unlock and retry. It has a timer. Probably needs a new Lock Cylinder and Keys installed and programed into the Security System.
It's not the fix but it works and goes from not cranking over at all to starting immediately, I would say thats a fix, the owners manual wouldn't tell u this because the dealership would charge u to sit in the seat for 10 mins and turn a key then charge u 2 hours labor, chevy still won't acknowledge this being an issue and happening in later model Tahoe's till mid 2010s

You have to wait at least 10 minutes before starting the car. Sometimes I’ll do an extra minute just to be sure. If it’s truly a security issue, the security light will be blinking

Just pull the BCM fuse out and put it back in and it'll start right up
Maybe that works for certain cars but I did that and it didn't work

Mam I bought my 04 yesterday and it locked on me I tried it but mind didn't flash does this have to be immediately after the stero locks??? I followed all instructions 10 min from 8:30 to 8:40 and then turned off and counted 10 seconds. Might add no doors were open
Easier way to do it unhook the battery terminal then reattach it it will start right up
can the hood be open ?
I never did this with the hood open but it’s worth trying out if you have an extra 10 mins to burn just in case it doesn’t work!

@@_officialbishopgaming1946 it doesn’t sound like it’s the same issue. I’m not sure the state you’re in but we have car speciality stores like Autozone and they check your battery, alternator and starter for free. It may be something for you to look into if you think it’s a starter issue
@@_officialbishopgaming1946 I'm right here with you, 04 monte carlo ss. Today she decided not to start. I tried that relearn 3 times and am now realizing my security light isn't flashing. I tried to remove bcm fuses as well and nothing. Thinking my starter is done. Thought I heard it try to crank and stop, and I realized if I try to start when I left off the key I hear a metallic ping. Thinking it can electrically start but not mechanically. So I'm hoping mine is just the original starter let go at 181K

I had this issues it was my alarms system I had to un plugged it i though people were beeping me and it was my car I had a bad remote never got a new one just left it disconnected..
It's not just Impala it's all cars it's relearning the key ... It's not a bypass u want a real bypass forget all this cut the yellow wire and black wire put them together than cap the other ends problem solved

this is not bypassing the security system, it's relearning your key.

thats not a bypass thats a reset just put a resistor between yellow and black wire for pass key system

I would assume it wouldn’t be the same issue but I personally would try it anyway. If it doesn’t work, you’ve lost 10 minutes and 10 seconds of your life but if it works? You’ve got a running car and a solution if it happens again

This is not a bypass.
Bypass? Your not bypassing anything… it’s a relearn procedure… bypassing would be going around the security system and basically eliminating it..
