Nick Rhodes used a Jupiter 4 for the drone, and a Roland system 100 sequenced with a Flanger pedal. For the melodies used Crumar Performer, and the wasp synthesizer and the rolling chimes was done with the prophet five He explains it in An interview how he created all the sounds. Very interesting utilized all that was available at the time.
from the official Duran Duran website: "Katy!!! What kind of synthesizer did Nick play on Planet Earth? Is it an SCI Prophecy 5? That's my best guess.... Matt "Well done, a keen ear! The sequencer was in fact a Prophet 5, the flanged sound on the intro is a Roland Jupiter 4 processed by an MXR flanger. The string sound is a Crumar Performer and the other parts are a combination of Prophet and Jupiter 4. Nick"
I love string synthesizers, I have actually decided to specialise in them now. Some of my school acquaintances were in a Duran Duran covers band. The drummer couldn't keep time with their arpeggiator, which is pretty crucial for Duran Duran songs. If I were doing it now, I would have a drum machine setting the master tempo, feeding a metronome sound from it to the drummer through headphones, and slave the synthesizer to the drum machine.
He can be seen wearing headphones in some concert footage, which makes me wonder if he was getting a metronome sound through them, but it might just be a general monitor.
Duran Duran were huge when I was a kid/early teen! Nice video indeed - just love seeing the live knob tweaking. My city is getting it's first "cat cafe" very soon - if only someone set up a "synth cafe" where people could come have a coffee then have a play with some vintage analog gear!
thanks Paolo, my favorite band! & reason I got into synths! Even though I actually I had a prophet 5 & crumar (in Kontakt )I couldn't this intro right cause I don't have your skill:( . More Duran Duran synth please!
Thanks Paolo, That was really interesting not just because I’m a huge Duran Duran fan but because it reminded a lot of “ sparks-no1 song in heaven” which as you would know was produced by Georgio moroder & I believe he used big moog modular to do it! ( I know you seem a hardware sort of guy but if you want a crumar performer sound & can I recommend the hollow sun performerlibrary for kontakt)
an excellent choice!!! very well done. I am not contradicting your expertise but I believe in the video Nick Rhodes did promoting the jdxa he says he used a jupiter 4 for the intro. I have never owned one but I have read the arpeggiator on that machine was unique in the way it scans the keyboard for example in friends of mine from the same album but it wasnt used on this song. But again I am just going from that video and I am not doubting your expertise because you absolutely know way more than I do Fred
Thank you, yes, I had actually seen that Nick Rhodes video but totally forgot about it, Kento Arimatsu pointed it out already below, I'll pin his comment
@@SynthManiaDotCom do you think the sequence could have been done with the jupiter 4 arpeggiator? I have read the way in which that synth scans the keyboard for arpeggios is different than any other in that it does not have a range button I believe. What are the notes of the sequence and could they be done with an arpeggiator of this design? I think it scans the keys depressed and goes to the top no matter where you are but not sure. I think the intro to the song the sound of thunder was done using this feature as well. (from the same album.)
Victor Gil I'd love to see this too. An interview I read says the main riff is a Yamaha CS80 and the layers of kalimbas are a Yamaha GS-1. Don't think Paolo has those synths, but bet he could do something very close on a Jupiter and DX7 instead.
Ciao Paolo congratulation you doing outstanding job on your channel . Can you please re-create tonight tonight tonight from Genesis on the Linn drum sequence Pattern I love that song and I tried to figure out how they did it and which drum machine they use for that particular song. Grazie mille Paolo you're the best
I've made the similar sound being influenced by dd's first album when l composed my own music. I used Guitar Pro 6 + lots of wirtual delay and flanger effects 👍💪
I have to know now. Which Prophet 5 revision do you think is the best sounding? 1? or 2 and 3 with Curtis chips? I messed around with this emulator of it: www.kvraudio.com/product/prophanity-by-roberson-audio-synthesizers
I've had rev 3, 3.2 and 3.3, and played the rev 2. I haven't tried a rev 1 yet (not too many of those come by) but it's the same SSM chips in both 1 and 2. Arguably the ssm rev 2 sounds better to many ears, including mine - hence the higher price. However, cem rev 3 is more stable, MIDI, later revision / more finished product etc. One can't go wrong with any rev, really. It's a classic Prophet-5. But personally, since I've already had all the flavors of 3, I'd like to get the rev 2 because I like the SSM sound. In a mix and with fx, any rev sounds great.
I read what you're talking about in Mark Vale's Vintage Synthesizers book. Do you think Dave Smith's new synths (Evolver, etc) sound good in person compared to a Prophet? Are they a good value? I think I read somewhere that the Nord Lead was modeled after the Prophet 5.
what are the notes of the sequence ? and also as a side note don't you think it is very similar to the song quiet life by the group Japan? I always felt that Duran duran kind of ripped them off at least on the first two albums
In 1979 Japan wasn't a very original band. For example, listen to "The Number One Song in Heaven" by Sparks and "It Takes Me Higher" by Ganymed. And yes, Duran Duran admitted that they ripped off "Quiet Life" drums for "Rio" (the song) and synth for "Sound of Thunder".
he says something totally different in this interview www.duranduran.com/wordpress/index.php?s=jupiter+4&cat=12 may 15 2004 segment . so actually you were correct
YES this is awesome! would love to see way more Duran Duran content!!!

You must be iItaly 's national treasure brother. Great job 👍
This might be my favorite DD song. It's outstanding for a first single!

That drummer shouldn't feel so bad - when trying to remix Is There Anyone Out There? I realised Roger Taylor couldn't keep time either. :)
He can be seen wearing headphones in some concert footage, which makes me wonder if he was getting a metronome sound through them, but it might just be a general monitor.
It's called a click track. And, yes, most bands, if not all, use it from time to time.
Grande Paolo !! Sempre produzindo o melhor conteúdo. Não perco um vídeo, parabéns !! Vc é um grande músico !!
muito muito obrigado!
Right on
Thank You!!!!
Those Envelopes on the modular are crazy fast!
I love this flanger, last week saw the Kebu video (Chase) with the newer version MXR flanger.

Sounds a bit like I feel love donna summer
Very cool!!

OK Paolo, the Crumar Performer has not arrived yet... but now you have the P5!! Waiting to listen the sequence made with this jewel 🙏
Well done! 👍
Good sounds :-) Remember me, Jean-Michel Jarre & Kraftwerk
great tanks😎
Always reminded me of Quiet Life by Japan
That's where Nick Rhodes stole his sound from.

Thanks, Pizza, yes, the Performer has the classic early Duran sound, I do plan to get one in the next future

Hi Paolo!Love the content! Can you do a demonstration on Toto's 'Africa'? Thanks! Keep it up

Awesome! Do you like ambient stuff like Auteche and B12? Would love to see your demos of them!

Suuuweeet😜
It was a Jupiter 4 I believe
Close enough. 😉
fai altri video sui duran duran se possibile :)
Lo faro' ;)
Here's a Duran Duran remix I messed around with:
soundcloud.com/sailfishsoundsystem/save-a-prayerrrrrrrr-drn-drn-rmx
Can you show how to do the intro to "Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order"

The rate is set too fast on the flanger - it needs to be a slower sweep.
What happened to your Prophet-5? In storage? Great job as always by the way!!!
My future father in law.
Was this originally done on an 100m?

Hi
What's the tempo on the arpeggio please
There's a website that lists the BPM of songs: songbpm.com/searches/planet-earth
@@SynthManiaDotCom
Thankyou of course 👍
very welcome
Very Giorgio Moroder 🙌
