@@IronMan-fz4ot Count me in as well.😀 It was literally a flood of bands and songs. Sure, some of the songs were terrible, however, the creativity was off the charts. The '80s and even the early '90s had great music. I believe that people listen more so to music because they weren't immersed in their phones and the internet, as they are today.
Great music, great times. Youth foot loose, fancy free, hanging with our buddies having a time of our lives. Forever in our hearts. Hi from Queensland, Australia ❤🙏🖐
My daughter is going to her first gig tonight. It got me thinking about going to my first one. Which brought me here. Edinburgh Playhouse 1988. Thanks lads, it was a great night.
I am 24 years old. I recently went to their concert with my mom who has been listening to them since she was a teenager. Right now I'm in bed sick and just using the time to listen to their hits. I feel fulfilled and imagine how I would have enjoyed their concerts if I had been born in the 80s. Big love for them and many other good performers from that era, whose hits are still heard today. ✨🤗🩷
Good onya, Kat! Check out The Chauffer. Not technically one of their "hits", but totally mesmerizing. All their albums are worth a listen, really. Great band.
I took my 24 year old daughter to see them last October, going again next month. Keep the Duranies going. Your mom has great taste in music, and as a mother, I’m proud to pass this awesome music to my children. And do listen to the Chauffeur. It’s mesmerizing ❤
Duran Duran was NOT really a Pop band, but a funk band. Listen to that bass, especially in the chorus. Chic approved this message. The 80s: _Lived 'em. Loved 'em. Miss 'em._
Yeah. They are cursed by getting too much radio play (though good for them financially). People hear their songs played all the time so they tune them out and dismiss them as mainstream corporate rock for the masses. Had they not become so popular, they would be more appreciated in the way the Cure is now. They have similar roots in post-punk, with many of those bands being influenced by funk and disco.
I wasn't around when the Beatles came as part of the British first wave in the US, but was alive when Duran Duran came as the undisputed leader of the second wave. It was mind blowing the groves of fans they drew, especially the women of course. Planet Earth is my #1 favorite DD song.
Actually... That was Nick Rodes that couldn't play much on the Keys. HE Is Self taught! Well... Actually I think all of them were pretty much self taught.
Please enlighten us as to how you determined he is underrated. Have you interviewed any bassists since the 80s who may or may not have been inspired by his playing? How many albums has Duran Duran sold?
I seem to recall John getting a bass player of the year award in the 80's, maybe twice. He's certainly not underrated by any stretch of the imagination.
Happy Birthday #40, Planet Earth! 2.2.1981 - 2.2.2021! What a song you are! Still sounds fresh after 40 years! I do remember exactly where I was & what I was doing when I heard you for the first time! Thanks Duran Duran!!
As a 50 something child of the 60's, you will often hear people say if you remember the 60's you weren't there, well if you do not remember the 80's the same could be said, I was fortunate to see the 80's, hear the 80's and be young in the 80's. Dressing up was part of the fun, dancing was part of the fun, it was such a great time to be young, carefree and happy
I was born in 81. My dad loved to play records. Duran Duran I found on my own. By 85-86 I was a huge follower and fan in my tiny age. Culture Club and Pet Shop Boys come to memory.
Duran Duran was real alternative music in the beginning, and they never sold out their sound, but adapted to the times, yet still holding on to that very version of alternative music. It was our generation who knew alternative music, nothing compares, to this day..
Yes it was a great time, lots of fun, the music still sounds great today! My kids definately dont agree but it was an original sound and though I like todays music I am always drawn back to this time, perhaps because I was 17-18 when this came out, good memories :)
I've read SO MANY Comments on John's Bass work on this song... Listen to the ENTIRE Album ESPECIALLY Songs like, "Night Boat" and "Sound of Thunder" or "Lonely in Your Nightmare" or "My Own Way"! ALL GREAT Songs with John and Roger just Tearing it up AND Holding the song together! Just a FREAKIN' GREAT BAND!!!
Always and forever, thank you to Great Britain and the British people whose creativity, since the 1960s, has given the rest of the World hundreds of unique bands such as the Duran Duran and music of unparalleled beauty, quirkiness and atmosphere. What would our lives have been without British bands? Thank you from Sicily.
Even as a Brit, I am quite staggered by how many great and diverse bands this small island creates. Unfathomable. But long may we continue to do so :-)

Iconic video, stylish, unique, nothing like it. Iconic band. What's more to say, and still going strong. So pleased they finally got into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so well deserved. Kate Bush this year hopefully, another well deserved one that's waited far too long.
We will never have song artists as good as they were back in the 80s but we will always be blessed with there music for as long as life on earth exists.
I was into heavy metal as a kid when this came out and had no time for DD. Well now I’m 55-still into heavy metal, but now love DD. Matured a bit, expanded my musical tastes big style n appreciate a band full of talented musicians-plus learning bass with Johns tutorials!
Wow wow wow, that’s a LOT of ruffles on Nick’s shirt! VERY “New Romantics”! I’m pickin’ up what he’s puttin’ down, all good! Out of nowhere this song started going through my mind tonight. I only remembered a few of the lyrics at first but then really wanted to hear it, so kept replaying it in my mind until the title came back to me! 👏👏👏👏

In high school we all dressed liked this. The pleated knickers, cumber buns, the over flamboyant frilly blouses, the moccasin boots or Russian boots. I LOVE HIGH SCHOOL 1981-1985. The best of times PERIOD! It was also the MTV new age era. You had to live it!
Yes I agree it was a great time to be a teenager back then no cell phones or distraction's just simply fun times with family and friends. I feel sorry for the millennials, they will never know how good we had it 🤗🤔
ugh there's so much to love about this song, this mv. Obviously john is drop dead gorgeous and a god on bass but I love how attention is given to ALL the members here. Roger's smile is golden, Andy's and Nick's fits are on point, and I will forever be obsessed with Simon's white girl dancing lmaooo
The more I watch this video the more I realise how so well made it was. All the shots of the band are timed so precisely and used to great effect. The videographer truly knew what he was doing.
Absolutely right. I've compiled playlists for 1981, 1982 and 1983 music videos on my channel, and I've only selected the very best examples, like this one. This is 1982 for instance: ua-cam.com/play/PL6oCQqv2KW6XTK18evV5q9WAua3eshkiS.html
Always remember seeing this band as a support act at Sheffield Polytechnic one Saturday night in the early 80’s s4and they were something very special, a brilliant band live. They introduced this song as their first single to be released during the next week and the rest is history!
I was obsessed with Duran Duran in the 80's but this is the first time I have ever actually seen the Planet Earth video. Good thing really because I think my teenage self would have imploded at a topless Simon! haha

Great music, great times. Youth foot loose, fancy free, hanging with our buddies having a time of our lives. Forever in our hearts. Hi from Queensland, Australia ❤🙏🖐
I've been a Duran Duran fan since 1981. I have always liked their music and lyrically they're very good. Their first album is my all time favourite.
A great album that is very underrated, especially if you get the one with the extended versions and demos.
Loved 'em. Miss 'em._
You sir are totally correct!
Don’t make excuses, they were just a great band that gave so much joy to millions of us.
They expertly filtered a good mix of sounds. Disco, pop, funk, punk.
Well Talor says he syncopated his bass tracks. You may be on to something...
I wasn't around when the Beatles came as part of the British first wave in the US, but was alive when Duran Duran came as the undisputed leader of the second wave. It was mind blowing the groves of fans they drew, especially the women of course. Planet Earth is my #1 favorite DD song.
And think that 3, 4 years before realising that album, John had no clue how to play a guitar... He learnt everything by his own! A total genius! 😍😍😍
Actually... That was Nick Rodes that couldn't play much on the Keys. HE Is Self taught! Well...
Actually I think all of them were pretty much self taught.
And sings great harmonies with Simon!
@@j.s.connolly8579 John is self-taught, too. (Source: his auto-biography 😁)
I was 11, I loved Simon Le Bon and this Album. 39 years later nothing has changed 😍
There it is. The dance that defines the 80s. Horrifically awesome
Nearly as bad as Rick Ashley...😂
Wouldn't that be the Moonwalk?
Did Simon inspire "The Carlton" with those moves?
By far the best Duran Duran song. Before they became over commercial.
THERE WILL NEVER BE A TIME IN LIFE LIKE THERE WAS IN THE 80'S. MUSIC WAS AWSOME, & SO WAS LIFE. OH HOW I MISS THOSE HAPPY DAYS.
Oh man John Taylor's bass line here us badass. What a groover.
Too right the bass is exceptional!
As a child of the 80's I am appreciating Duran Duran's music on a whole other level as an adult. They're so good.
chris bacon this happening to me right now too. I’ve been killing there albums and feel the same way. Wow
This album made me go to their tour in the US. My first concert. 1983 or 1984.
I love watching Simon dancing!!!! What a doll. 😘
We should broadcast this into space.
2023 anybody? I absolutely love this tune when I was younger and still do day by day!❤
Yes, I'm here. Loved them then and now. 🔥
me too!(I’m 57 now)
60' in 2024. Got this in Duran Duran and Planet Earth folder. LoL
John Taylor is a highly underrated musician, he was so good looking no one cared how talented he was
Please enlighten us as to how you determined he is underrated. Have you interviewed any bassists since the 80s who may or may not have been inspired by his playing? How many albums has Duran Duran sold?
@@jimlovesgina easy buddy, it's just an opinion.
@@jimlovesgina do you not hear how good his bass is in this song
@@melialove6549 you're seriously talking out of your arse.
I seem to recall John getting a bass player of the year award in the 80's, maybe twice. He's certainly not underrated by any stretch of the imagination.
40 years old and still sounds magnificent 👌
THAT BASS WHAT CARRIES THIS SONG ALL THE WAY TO 2021 and it s still on 🔥
One of the BEST songs of the 1980’s...or ever! 😍😃
Happy Birthday #40, Planet Earth! 2.2.1981 - 2.2.2021! What a song you are! Still sounds fresh after 40 years!
I do remember exactly where I was & what I was doing when I heard you for the first time! Thanks Duran Duran!!
Nick Rhodes never fucked around on keys and how John Taylor introduced funk bass into new wave is still gold to this day. Great stuff.
In 1981 I was only 9 years old. I never imagined how much this music would influence me for the rest of my life.
I was 14 but yeah agreed
Same here and millions of others too!!
I’m the same age, born in ‘72. I loved these guys and this was my favorite song 😉
❤
I was born in 81. My dad loved to play records. Duran Duran I found on my own. By 85-86 I was a huge follower and fan in my tiny age. Culture Club and Pet Shop
Boys come to memory.
The most beautiful men I've ever seen in my entire life.
so you have not seen me then.
good taste
Right I had it so bad for John Taylor....
Sara Rodrigues God yes they were!!
Sara Rodrigues I really had a mad crush on John Taylor!!! He was the finest man in the group.....He still looks good!!!😍💖😘💖
Duran Duran was real alternative music in the beginning, and they never sold out their sound, but adapted to the times, yet still holding on to that very version of alternative music. It was our generation who knew alternative music, nothing compares, to this day..
Those two awesome dancers at 2:52 have always been my favorite part of this iconic video. Very goth and creative looking.
This video / song / clothes / the sound is the very definition of "new romantic" 1980-1983
As well as the vacant eyed MTV stare. Blue Steel, to be precise.
Yes it was a great time, lots of fun, the music still sounds great today! My kids definately dont agree but it was an original sound and though I like todays music I am always drawn back to this time, perhaps because I was 17-18 when this came out, good memories :)
Like some new romantic looking for a TV sound...
'NewRo'
Alongside to Fade To Grey video / song / clothes / sound / single cover.
What an amazing piece of bass playing by Taylor, drumming too........what a superb era of music
This video sparked an 11yo San Diego kid's love of music. Duran are my band. Always was, always will be.
Anyone who still hasn't recognised the brilliance of this record really is on another "Planet"!!!
Thankyou!
Amen
Indeed So!!
you're being mooned 💡💡💡
Maybe we just have different opinions to you. It happens!
I've read SO MANY Comments on John's Bass work on this song... Listen to the ENTIRE Album ESPECIALLY Songs like,
"Night Boat" and "Sound of Thunder" or "Lonely in Your Nightmare" or "My Own Way"!
ALL GREAT Songs with John and Roger just Tearing it up AND Holding the song together!
Just a FREAKIN' GREAT BAND!!!
New Religion too
Hell to the yeah!
You're welcome (from the UK)
I was OBSESSED with British bands in the 80’s, especially Duran Duran.
Even as a Brit, I am quite staggered by how many great and diverse bands this small island creates. Unfathomable. But long may we continue to do so :-)

This song launched Duran Durans music career in the 80s
This song was released by Duran Duran back in early '81
2nd February 1981
I was two years old and going on three when they released this masterpiece
An absolute early 80s power anthem ❤❤🎉🎉
Opening Shot of Roger Taylor STILL gives me Butterflies in my Tummy!! 7th & 8th grade was a blast for Durannies Everywhere....JT rockin that Bass and Blowin my mind. God I LOVED THEM
FANTASTIC SONG WHAT A WILD AND CRAZY BASS LINE...... REALLY KICKN!!!
The group is a diamond -- all members are top players in their category --
This is one of my favorite songs by Duran Duran. I just love these guys!!! Been a fan from day one.
Iconic video, stylish, unique, nothing like it. Iconic band. What's more to say, and still going strong. So pleased they finally got into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so well deserved. Kate Bush this year hopefully, another well deserved one that's waited far too long.
Happy 60th Birthday to our beloved Simon. Still got it babe.
The best band of all time ....
A melhor Banda de todos os tempos....
They were so, so chic I simply can't😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
We will never have song artists as good as they were back in the 80s but we will always be blessed with there music for as long as life on earth exists.
Brilliant 👌🎉
Can't beat the 80s
I was into heavy metal as a kid when this came out and had no time for DD. Well now I’m 55-still into heavy metal, but now love DD. Matured a bit, expanded my musical tastes big style n appreciate a band full of talented musicians-plus learning bass with Johns tutorials!
Ha, I'm 53, started out loving DD as a pre-teen and then moved into metal. Still love DD to this day!
I love Simon’s dancing. ❤️
Me too...
Agree 😊
Duran Duran were, is and always will be my favorite band ever!!! i feel so nostalgic hearing 80's songs.
I feel sorry for the millennials, they will never know how good we had it 🤗🤔
Where did you go to high school? I loved this song but the whole outfit never got to our high school - just the frilly blouses
@@sarahharris4849 Overfelt high school in San Jose. California
That makes sense. I grew up in Ky & let's just say that it was conservative
I'm 60 and I'm taking My DD collection into 2025 with me❤
pa pa pa pa pa pa pa pa this is Planet heart! BASS..... Im Dying . Thank you Duran Duran for making my youth one of the Best ever!
My mom was a rather strict Christian but we could listen to Duran. I think she secretly found them attractive!
ugh there's so much to love about this song, this mv. Obviously john is drop dead gorgeous and a god on bass but I love how attention is given to ALL the members here. Roger's smile is golden, Andy's and Nick's fits are on point, and I will forever be obsessed with Simon's white girl dancing lmaooo
Roger is fire!!!!! Solid, tight, explosive, electric!
Vivo por John Taylor y su precioso riff
Esta es de mis favoritas, pero se luce en el bajo en Río...de lo mejor John Taylor
Duran Duran were awsome . This takes me back to my youth . The bass solo from John taylor ,is legendary !! 🎸🎶🎶🎶
They're still together, still playing, touring, and producing new material.
John Taylor has always been humble about his work on bass. People assume that can't possibly his work.
Back in the day I never appreciated what a good bass player John Taylor was. I do now.

Always remember seeing this band as a support act at Sheffield Polytechnic one Saturday night in the early 80’s s4and they were something very special, a brilliant band live. They introduced this song as their first single to be released during the next week and the rest is history!
Wow. How cool
"Looking for the TV sound". My friends and I in our school in 1981 got this straight away. We loved this song.
Just love that bass line.
I absolutely love the bass guitar on this!
Still my favourite track of theirs.....monster bassline, pre-electo synths........strong lyricals and performance.....loved it then and love it now.
I agree, but listen to the bassline at the end of «Anyone Out There» That's magic! Slap it, John Taylor!
I was obsessed with Duran Duran in the 80's but this is the first time I have ever actually seen the Planet Earth video. Good thing really because I think my teenage self would have imploded at a topless Simon! haha
Can't believe you never got the iconic Duran Duran VHS, where this video is from! You have alot to catch up on!! 😸
