  • Embarking on the first episode of our journey from the serene landscapes of Kerala to the divine heights of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra in Jammu and Kashmir, aboard the illustrious 16317 Himsagar Express on the 1st of March 2024. Our voyage commences from the quaint town of Kottayam, where lush greenery meets tranquil backwaters, as we set our sights towards the sacred destination ahead.
Boarding the 16317 Himsagar Express at Kottayam Railway Station around 19:00 hours in the dusk, I anticipate the enchanting journey that lies ahead. As the train begins its journey towards its first stop in Ernakulam, the night gradually envelops the surroundings, dimming the visuals along the way. With dinner from home in hand, I settle in for the night, preparing to rejuvenate for the adventures of the following day. As the train approaches Ernakulam and continues its nocturnal journey, I find solace in the comfort of my Air-conditioned 2A berth, eagerly awaiting the dawn.
Awakening to the pristine surroundings as we depart from Jolarpettai Jn, I embrace the morning (2-03-2024) with renewed energy and enthusiasm. By the time I settle in after freshening up, the train has departed from Katpadi Junction, transitioning onto the erstwhile Metre-gauge branch line towards Renigunta Junction via Pakala Jn and Tirupati over the S. C. Rly. Transitioning from the Southern Railway network to the South Central Railway network after departing from Katpadi Junction station marks a shift in the journey towards different destinations and possibly different landscapes or cultural regions.
As the train draws nearer to Tirupati, the sacred hill shrines come into view, signaling our approach to one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Within the compartment, passengers engage in conversations in their respective local tongues, discussing the significance of Tirupati and the millions of pilgrims who make their pilgrimage to this revered land each year. As we near Tirupati station, the anticipation among passengers heightens, and many begin to prepare for their disembarkation. Upon arrival at the station, a flurry of activity ensues as passengers alight from the train, eager to begin their spiritual journey in this sacred land. With a brief stop at Tirupati station, some passengers detrain while others continue their onward journey aboard the 16317 Himsagar Express. As the train resumes its course towards Renigunta station, the echoes of devotion linger in the air, reminding us of the sacredness of our pilgrimage and the spiritual significance of the journey ahead.
As our train swiftly covers the short distance between Tirupati and Renigunta, we soon arrive at Renigunta station. Renigunta holds significant importance as one of the most crucial stations and a pivotal transit point linking the Madras (Chennai) to Mumbai railway line. It serves as a junction with branches extending southward to Katpadi and northward to Gudur.
In its illustrious history, these branches via Renigunta operated on the Metre-gauge system, while all trains bound for North India from the southern regions traversed the Grand Trunk line via Madras. However, in the progressive 1950s, the Metre-gauge branch line from Renigunta to Gudur underwent conversion to Broad-gauge. This transformation streamlined the route for trains bound towards Renigunta and onward to Gudur Junction, ultimately joining the Delhi-bound Grand Trunk line.
In the 21st century, particularly in the mid-2000s decade, further enhancements were made to the railway infrastructure. The branch line from Katpadi to Tirupati was converted to broad-gauge, significantly easing connections. This conversion allowed trains originating from Katpadi to bypass the looped Jolarpettai-Madras line, proceeding directly towards Gudur Junction via the Katpadi-Tirupati and Renigunta-Gudur branch lines.
These developments in the railway network have not only improved connectivity but also streamlined the journey experience for passengers, making travel between these key destinations more efficient and convenient. Renigunta continues to play a pivotal role in facilitating smooth transitions and connections for travelers across the region.
The conclusion of episode 1 marks our stop at Renigunta, but the journey is far from over. Stay tuned for the upcoming episodes, where each moment promises to be filled with thrill and adventure as we continue our odyssey through the diverse landscapes and cultural tapestry of India. From the southernmost tip of Kerala to the northernmost plains of various states, our path will be adorned with stories waiting to unfold before reaching our ultimate destination, Katra in Jammu and Kashmir. Join us as we delve deeper into the heart of this remarkable journey, where every stop brings us closer to the spiritual heights of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra.
