I really love how Philip is pure evil and not sympathetic but he's still allowed to have feelings. He misses home. He's worried about what the world will be like when he returns. He's anxious about the DOU not working out like he thinks it will. He needs his brother and yet he hates him. Letting him be pure evil while also letting him feel makes him fascinating to watch.

Another understated aspect of his character is that he GENUINELY cares about Luz, as another human, and wants to bring her back to the human world because he thinks she doesn't belong there. He is racist and genocidal, but he sees her as just a kid who's bitten off more than she can chew, which to some extent is true. His care is infantilizing and doesn't excuse his actions at all, but it reflects really well on the ways real-life racist people can be so nice to their own race.

He is batshit crazy enough to somehow think that killing his 'brother' is acceptable as long as he can 'remake' him in an 'unbroken' state. it's part of why he insisted on 'dealing' with Hunter before making another grimwalker. Whitibane/Belos is a serial killer who, in his early days, not only deliberately sent people to their deaths when he had no reason to, wrote a false account to make himself look heroic. I haven't enjoyed a villain like Belos in a long time. He feels like he stepped right out of the classic era of Disney, where villains were exactly that - villains. They weren't sympathetic, they weren't redeemable. And they aren't some surprise twist revealing "I was evil all along!". They were vile monsters, and the more your learn about them just reinforces how despicable they truly are. Right from the get go Belos treats everyone as tools to be discarded the moment they no longer serve his use. He's a manipulator, a liar, and a murderer, with a powerful presence that just sucks you in. Belos is true, honest evil, and I absolutely love it.

I kinda expected that he would be the selfish villain you can understand but can't agree with. Not redeemable, totally egoist, but you can see how someone could fall into one of those.
... And then Hollow Mind came and literally slapped me with a "Nah, this guy has been a psychopath maniac for 400 years and he is not stopping now" and honestly, he just became one of my favorite Disney villains of all time at that point.

I tend to really like sympathetic villains but I like how Belos is written too. I think it's important to have representation of both sad, redeemable people and insane monsters who can't be reasoned with, because both types of people exist in the real world. It's important to have empathy, but it's also important to watch your back for people like Belos. I love the metaphors used with him, like how he turns into the monster made of all the palisman he murdered in cold blood, symbolising the weight of killing so many eating away at his sanity until there's nothing left, yet he abandons and ignores the crying of his inner self for the sake of his mission. He views even himself as a tool, mutilating his own body for his lost cause. He truly lives an entirely empty existence.

The season one finale is even better once you realize Belos was going easy on Luz on purpose. He spent years with Lilith and realized she was the witch who punched him. So once Luz showed up he realized Lilith would travel back in time and once he meet Luz that confirmed it since he say her use the glyphs and Lilith took Luz’s side. So he knew he couldn’t kill Luz in their little “fight” so he let her go knowing she needed to time travel. That’s why in Hollow Mind right after he knew she had already meet Philip he outright tried to kill her, cause she had already surved her purpose of giving him the light glyph.

What's really scary about Phillip is that, once you look past the more eldritch aspects of his character, someone like him can actually exist in real life. The chances of running into a dorito shaped chaos god like Bill Cipher or a multiverse conquering newt like Andrias are incredibly slim. But Phillip? He's a charismatic, manipulative bigot who persecutes a race he considers subhuman. There are plenty of people in the real world with his twisted mindset, whether they be a politician, a religious zealot with significant influence over the masses, or even your next door neighbor. Not to mention that his abuse of Hunter isn't too far off from the abuse people under fundamentalist religious households face for their "satanic" interests.

I think the best thing about Belos' writing is that he's understandable, but NOT empathetic.
After learning he's from 1600's America, you understand why he hates witches, but you still know he's wrong for doing do.
He does truly heinous, evil acts time and time again, and has woven webs upon webs of lies (he even had the fandom fooled about his true intentions), but he's so GOOD at it that it's entertaining to watch.
There are villains that you love, villains that you hate, and villains that you love to hate (or vice versa). But I've NEVER seen a villain so perfectly centered on that scale like this man is; he's arguably the most well-written and nuanced character in The Owl House.

His hatred of witchcraft also goes too deep; after experiencing this realm for hundreds of years he fully understands that witches are just people with magic, and they aren't and were never a threat to Earth. Traveling between the Isles and Earth is barely possible, and there was never any intent shown from witches or demons that they would even want to go to Earth. Yet, he still gleefully tries to genocide the witches and would gladly kill Luz too, but the consequences of his actions and arrogance come back to haunt him(if only he stopped toying around with Luz and increase his own ego by trying to sway her to his side, or wasn't cruel to Kikimora, etc.)

Why Belos is a great villain:
    1. He’s actually competent-Belos is one of the smartest, if not the smartest, characters in the show. He only lost due to a wild card he couldn’t account for, and even then, we don’t know how much of a setback that is. He will lose the battle to win the war. He won’t uphold a deal if he knows that it has no benefit to him, as Eda doesn’t want to owe him anything, and only an idiot would give magic to the person who hates them with a passion.
    2. He’s legit evil-Belos is manipulative, cruel, arrogant, and violent. However, while it’s clear there’s no talking him down, his behaviour is implied to be due to having the virtues of a society that incinerates outcasts drilled into his skull since he was an impressionable child. Even his creation of the Grimwalkers has multiple interpretations of why he does it: Does he miss his brother? Does he hate him so much that killing him once wasn’t enough? A bit of both?
    3. He’s a dark reflection of the hero-Luz and Belos are both humans that entered the Boiling Isles, learned how to use glyphs, and were both outcasts on Earth. The big difference is that Belos was raised to hate witches and value conformity, and Luz was raised to admire them, and value individuality. Ironically enough, Belos sees Caleb in Luz more than he sees himself in her. While the parallels can be made between Luz and Caleb, she’s more like a heroic version of Belos.

Phillip Wittebane is one of the most HUMAN villain I've seen. He wasn't born an all-powerful being like the Collector; instead, he built everything from scratch with his own hands. He had grand plans, but those plans weren't immune to accidents, either; throughout the series, we can see him always improvising in the face of various forces majeures, just like an ordinary man versus insurmountable odds. If not for his parochial views, his story would have almost been that of a hero. And even his seemingly petty bias, which drove him to such length, is a common and HUMAN weakness that we are all prone to. He is as human as Luz the Protagonist, if not more so in a different direction.

My favorite detail about his design is the lack of a twinkle in his eyes. Every last character-human,witch,demon,even starchild has that white spot on the upper right of their pupil and the facet of a lighter shade in their eyes, except Belos
Even Phillip,Belos’ own past self, had that detail in his eyes-but with his present self it’s nowhere to be found
To me,this shows how far Phillip has sunk. Murdering his own brother, creating and promptly discarding those dozens of Grimwalkers, manipulating, persecuting, oppressing and petrifying the denizens of the Boiling Isles while planning to kill them all, abusing Hunter and consuming so many palismen that he lived far beyond his natural lifespan and turned himself into something inhuman-and doing it all for centuries.

What I love about Belos is how many villain forms he takes as a character. We see him in the first season as the mysterious masked tyranical ruler, we can only guess what lures behind that mask, all we get is a blue flaming eye and mud like tentacle outbursts.
Then we see him as an older kind looking man with long hair, like some kind of wise mentor, we see him as Phillip, a 16th century chap that reminds me of Charles Darwin with long beard and the curiosity of an adventurer and a explorer. In the episode in which Luz and Hunter are in his mind we get the creepy little Horror kid trope with Belos as a child wearing a mask, then we see his mudlike straight up monster form resembling a fucked up swamp-Wendigo, which was hintet at with his outbursts, in that form he is straight up an animalistic beast, hunting its prey. Then we also see him in his for him normal clothes. He is an old man with ponytail and nice uniform from the colonial times, we see him as just an arrogant and evil but stylish and classy gentleman villain. And then his final form which I dont think we need to talk about. Belos is awesome.

I like how Belos is pretty much a Lovecraftian main character as an antagonist. A scholarly 17th century old stock new englander who found himself in an oniric landscape full of weird and wondrous magic and dangerous creatures. He was initially a very inquisitive soul who became jaded, bitter and bigoted as his strange adventure wore on, growing to feel as hateful to the witches and demons as he felt homesick. There are a lot of traces from different HPL characters in his personality, but two of them are the most apparent. Joseph Curwen's wretchedly aged figure, malignant and cunning personality and manipulation of his kin as Belos ; and at his core, as Phillip Wittebane, Randolph Carter's disilusionment with his current life and a burning nostalgia for his childhood, and a place to which he lost the way long ago and only exists in his dreams. It's interesting however that contrary to Carter, it is a mundane and wholly physical world that Wittebane longs for.

another thing i appreciate, is that even if he went full rampage, when he saw the collector, he immediately regained his common sense and instead of doing some stupid cliche like "i'm the main villain, nobody can defeat me, blablabla " ***(proceeds to do something stupid that leads to his inevitable demise), he tried to do something smart....well, atleast he tried, but still managed to survivie.

His monstrous condition combined w/ the beliefs you can find among real people today has created someone truly terrifying. & the fact is that he didn’t get so far bc of his power level or skill w/ magic, he got where he was bc he’s a master manipulator. He manipulated the Boiling Isles society as a whole, he manipulated the people he created from his own brother’s corpse, he even manipulated the godlike being that gave him his magic. I’m willing to bet that he also manipulated his brother & was a regular fear monger-er/accuser as a child in his Puritan village (I really hope season 3 can go into detail about the Wittebane brothers’ backstory). & to add to the terror, he truly believes he’s taking the path a righteousness. He's calm, even tempered and, in his twisted way, rational....but this only serves to highlight his own madness and cruelty.
Very different villains, but very compellign in their own way.

I disagree of Belos being chaos. He's order, uncaring and oppresive order.
You either fit in or die.
Coven system was early example of this, but his "real order" was much simpler. "No witches!"

My little opinion + TOH spoilers
To be fair, belos showed quite the improvvisation skills: he got destroyed and his plan failed, but then he discovers that in that broken form he can posses things, so he learns to use this new power, possess Hunter and come back to posses the Collector. When that fails he tries to manipalute him to do his job, when even that fails he realize that the Titan is an option more powerful and pretty vulnerable for him to use.
Some people thinks that's too convenient for him to have so many backup plans, but truth is he made those out of improvisation, to rember us that he's quite of a genius.

I love how Belos is so smug and vile in his actions that him screwing over Kikimora and the Collector made people go 'oof'. Just threw them aside like dirty socks once he got what he wanted. My favorite thing is that when he betrays the latter, he did so without any regrets and such relish, making a bunch of reactors I saw actually go 'aww, poor collector!' a bit, making people temporarily forget that they also did some rotten shit (hunting down the owl beast and indirectly being responsible for Eda's hardships). Belos was just smart enough to twist the knife in first.

Disney show antagonists are just better than Disney movie villains these days.
*Dr.Doofenshmirtz*- a hilarious yet tragic "villain" who, despite his goals of taking over the tri-state area, is actually a bumbling fool who happens to have an uncanny skill at building inators and is honestly a really good dad, which is rare for villainous characters (and let's not forget his great relationship with Perry lmao)
*Toffee*- a compelling antagonist who really sells his threatening nature by how well he plays off the other characters, playing with them and taunting them, as if they're pieces on a chessboard...all for his finger, which sells something that any antagonist should have: a reason (yes, doing things for no apparent reason or just for the chaos can count as a reason), as the finger is his goal because it is a symbol of how magic poses a serious threat to him and his monstrous bretherin
*Lord Dominator*- a fun-to-watch psychopath (I don't really have much to say about her tbh...although I do like her villain song (nobody tops Dr.Doof when it comes to Disney animated show villain songs tho) and her character design is memorable and awesome)
*Bill Cipher*- a great balance between comedic and utterly terrifying and a great way to write a seemingly overpowered villain. His presence was powerful and he accomplished the role of antagonist well, as he essentially forced the protagonists to improve and become better and stronger in order to defeat him. His personality and powers combine to make a chaotic dorito god with a cute hat who steals the show everytime he is on screen
*King Andrias*- probably the best twist villain in a long time (his goofy personality wasn't an act, so when he showed he was evil, but remained goofy, the audience didn't have to relearn his personality, which gave him some complexity), who also had great comedic moments, amazing parallels and contrasts with the protagonist (Anne) and a truly understandable and sympathetic backstory (and let's not forget the stellar voice acting from Keith David)
*Emperor Belos*- a character who is expertly written as a complete monster with little to no redeemable moments and a perfect antagonist for a show like Owl House, as he represents the opposite of what the show promotes: acceptance of people for who and what they are and self-love. His lack of comedic moments also cements how serious of a threat he is (that isn't to say Bill or Andrias weren't threatening as they showed that comedic villains can be just as dangerous as serious ones), contrasting with every character in the show (even Kikimora had a couple of funny moments). Also, even though we barely saw him in season 1, his presence was definitely felt through his coven system, the conformitorium, and the Emperor's Coven itself, so when we did meet him, we already had reasons to not like him and even fear him
In conclusion, Disney needs to either stop f***ing making remakes, stop restricting creators such as Dana Terrace, Matt Braly, and Alex Hirsch with their shows, or both lol
Also if you couldn't tell, I fricking love villains/antagonists in general. They are usually very interesting and fun to watch.

Witch Hunter general is a very specific term, only used by one man. An Englishman by the name of Matthew Hopkins, who invented the title. He wrote the book "The Discovery of Witches", detailing his exploits, how to hunt. This book made it's way to the colonies, where it greatly influenced the witch hunts there. This puts Philip's childhood or young adult life around 1647, when it was published.
The implications of wanting that specific title is...severe. Matthew Hopkins killed over 100 so called witches in two years. He and his men were responcible for more witch trials than the previous 160 years, with Matthew himself often sighted as the main cause of the trials in the first place.
Matthew was a mere man with a cult of personality. Philip is a shapeshifting, soul devouring seemingly now ageless abomination with a plethora of spells and knowledge, and literal centuries of experience leading a religious dictatorship.
And he wants to be just like Hopkins.
