A Perfect Circle - Passive

- Опубліковано 23 лип 2009
- "Passive" is a song by the alternative rock group A Perfect Circle. The song is a remake of the song "Vacant" by the now-defunct band Tapeworm.
"Vacant" was first performed by A Perfect Circle without Trent Reznor's agreement.
The song is used in the film Constantine and the music video uses imagery from the film: Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz's character) entering hell.
Lyrics:
Dead as dead can be
My doctor tells me
But I just can't believe him
Ever the optimistic one
I'm sure of your ability
To become my perfect enemy
Wake up and face me
Don't play dead 'cause maybe
Someday I will walk away and say
You disappoint me
Maybe you're better off this way
Leaning over you here
Cold and catatonic
I catch a brief reflection
Of what you could and might have been
It's your RIGHT and your ability
To become my perfect enemy
Wake up
(Why cant you?)
And face me
(Come on now)
Don't play dead
(Dont play dead)
'Cause maybe
(Because maybe)
Someday
(Someday)
I will walk away and say
You disappoint me
Maybe you're better off this way
Maybe you're better off this way (×4)
You're better off this (×2)
Maybe you're better off...
Wake up
(Why can't you?)
And face me
(Come on now)
Don't play dead
(Dont play dead)
'Cause maybe
(Because maybe)
Someday
(Someday)
I will walk away and say
You fucking disappoint me
Maybe you're better off this way!
Go ahead and play dead
(GO!)
I know that you can hear this
(GO!)
Go ahead and play dead
(GO!)
Why can't you turn and face me?
(WAKE UP!)
Why can't you turn against me?
(WAKE UP!)
Why can't you turn against me?
(WAKE UP!)
Why can't you turn against me?
(GO!)
You fucking disappoint me
Passive-aggressive bullshit... (×12)

Someone in 2024???
I can either be in calm silence, anger, happiness, or tears, this song has been incorporated in so many different parts of my life all these years. You know it's a powerful song if it can change meanings to help you though. Such an amazing song, I will never be tired of.
Completely agree.
You have the gift and the curse, just as a lot of us have. At least you know why, you will face circumstances the rest of the world can’t contemplate, good luck and Godspeed my friend.
Half breed
Constantine
@@aaloosamosapyaazbhih5825 Completely forgot the song was in it. I thought you were calling me one for some reason. Sorry.
If there are people still listening in 2024, you are from the 90's 🕺🏽🤗
Just give yourself to the rhythm 🤫
Straight up the anthem of my former marriage.
This song came out the year my ex started >really< acting up after having our first (and as I saw fit, only) child.
After nearly two decades of mental and emotional abuse (culminating in my daughter self-harming and planning her “self-deletion” at 13 years old) I took matters into my own hands and escaped with my child.
Spent every penny I had fighting off the vindictive custody suit that woman filed after she realized my child wanted nothing to do with her.
The only reason I came out on top is because my ex was so uncooperative, so horrible, even her own lawyer only lasted two weeks.
During the final moments of the hearing after she was forced to drop the suit, the lyrics of this song, which I hadn’t heard in a decade, rang out in my mind like a gunshot in an enclosed room…
“Someday I will walk away and say, you f-ing disappoint me, maybe you’re better off this way…”
We did it.
After 19 years of pain and suffering, my daughter and I are now happy and healing.
PSA to men, don’t let the system beat you down, fight to the last.
Even when the odds are rigged and insurmountable, FIGHT HARDER.
There is no defeat as long as you draw breath.
You are a hero.
God bless you and your daughter, brother.
May you both live long and joyous lives
Thank you for sharing your story! You are very brave! Wish there were more parents like yourself sir! Wish nothing but the best for you and your daughter
Deseo de corazón estés en paz te abrazo con mi alma.
I'm so glad your daughter is alright. And you, too.

How can one be so good at vocal harmonies and just carry so much energy, emotion and charisma in his voice

“Don’t give into astonishment” - Terrence Mckenna & Joe Rogan, the message from the entities of the DMT realm
Why does the wind feel good on your back? Why do a collection of arranged notes make us feel something? You're asking the wrong questions. Start from the fundamental understanding that there is beauty and build from there
Just a heads up to the commenters that seem to be unaware.
This song is about Maynard's mother, who treated him rather poorly in childhood and justified it using religion. She later fell into a coma for decades. The song is about how he craves to argue and reconcile with his mother, but because of the coma, she is his perfect enemy, because she is still alive, yet he has no way to ever get closure.
That is where the chorus comes from "Wake up and face me, don't play dead, cause maybe, someday I will walk away and say, you disappoint me, maybe you're better off this way." It is an infinitely more powerful song with the context. It really changed the way I view it.
thanks for that info. its a really powerful song
Holy shit
makes perfect sense , thank you good sire
wow.. what a backstory behind this song. Almost seems surreal to even think about.
wow......that is really profound. thank you for sharing this about Maynard. you're right. brings whole new meaning to the song.
Constantine has what movies of today totally miss- that underlying tension between the male and female lead that’s just left as a tension. The whole movie’s pretty coherent and builds on a limited number of characters very well. Sad they didn’t do sequels
Yes
Keanu said, of any roles he'd like to return to, he'd like to continue Constantine.
@@MoCatt Fuck man!
2021 would've been a great opportunity for him to do another Constantine movie. I wish he turned down WB on Matrix 4 and ask WB to greenlit Constantine 2!!!
Couldn’t agree more actually
Keanu reeves wants to do a sequel

Constantine was just on. My MP3 player's shuffle setting always skips this song.
Keanu and Tilda are amazing with a surprising job well done by Gavin Rosdale of Bush!
When I was about 14-15 I heard this song and it instantly reminded me of my father who I have a terrible relationship with. Still to this day this song is a powerhouse. I will always love APC!
For some reason everytime I go to a Demon-infested bar this song is playing
Most underrated comment ...
Buffy missed out then
John Constantine is that you?
This song is powerful to me, it represents to me the shit I used to do for so long, that I regret and how I would see/talk to myself and doing something about changing and finally waking the fuck up. Very inspiring to me in my dark days, helped me leave my past behind and kill it once and for all.

Being fearlessly passive is the way to incredible power.
So much beauty in frustration!
There really is, in the wake of frustration the principalities of passion are ignited, one can feel ones own soul, and the soul of others rise climatically like a kindled flame, being provoked by air flow that allows it to burn wildly. Then, you know what it means to feel alive, to care, to contemplate, the desire to make a change, hopefully for the better
+Helio Centric I hate you

U know what .. I got goosebumps . When I hear "dead is Dead can be" ..
Voaahh ..
"And uh...death to america?" ... lol jk, key and peele reference.
Maynard really is a musical genius.
I am amazed at how he took all those emotions and turned them into songs... If handled correctly, tragic childhoods can be transmuted into soul-nourishing music instead of festering as repressed emotions and bursting out in a destructive manner. This is exactly why I'm glad I am not a machine. No way a machine could ever understand music the way a human being does.
Youre a biological machine. The emotions you feel are a complex mixture of chemical reactions.
L
This comment helped me tonight more than you could know..
I wish I could have gotten a sweet gift like musical talent or writing talent from my tragic childhood. I just got a propensity for violence.
@@jamesparthos6811 That’s a complete oxymoron
I relate to this song on so many personal levels. Puts me in tears every time
This song has helped me so much after meeting someone when I was in a bad place, as a single parent that had come out of an abusive relationship. I thought I'd met someone who would be there for us and then we were dropped without a second thought further down the line. this song just reminded me it's better off letting someone go who does nothing but let you down.
Going through a bad divorce. This song plays in my head once per day.
hope you're better dude
This song got me through my divorce back in 2009-10, along with Judith, and a couple songs from other groups. Maynard always has been able to tap that emotional void in me, and make it all come pouring out.
I love so fu*ing much this Song one of the best from this album.
Aren't you a peach.
Track 5 Trent Rezner and Maynard
Maybe you are better off maybe you would like to know me I doubt it whoever you are probably make you worse
Also the only original track, rest were covers 2 or 3 of which were phenomenal
This song really hits home with me at the moment. Nothing like the love of your life, mother of your children and best friend no longer having those same feelings back for you..
God this is a beautiful song. Just watched Constantine for the first time. Great movie. Great song.
I was at Edgefest 2011 in Toronto. A Perfect Circle absolutely stole the show. Maynard is a fucking genius. Love him. ❤️

I've seen Tool's 10,000 Days in concert at the Gorge, in WA. Kinda saw APC in Vancouver at a concert festival. We were pulling in right as they were starting up. One of the band's family members had just died, so they called it, but Maynard sang lead with the Deftones. That was pretty epic. It was the Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins' last tour (or so it was announced). The depth behind the songs, the storytelling, along with the skill to express it, respect.
Those 5 bands are all in my top 15 favorite bands
APC will neverrrrr get old! Lifelong fan right here(:
Justine Maden yes!!!
I'm having one of those moments where a song fits seamlessly into what my day was like, and I have beer. Cool.
I, personally, think that this is their best song, ever. Great vibe. Maybe I'm better off this way?
I'm not sure what's worse, losing a friend or losing an enemy
Losing your humanity would probably be the worst of them all
Joseph Yu Losing your humanity is so easy in this world too thats the scary part
There is no such thing as a friend in this world it seems any more they will all turn their backs on you eventually and they only want things for personal gain... you may think you found the perfect friend but sooner or later they will stab you in the back go their separate way... never become two attached to some one because this will always happen... in the rarest circumstance that you actually find a friend that wont turn on you than you need to keep that friend and try not to ruin anything because a true friendship is really hard to come by... Take it from me I am someone who has no more friend but throughout my life I have made many of what i thought were "true friend" inviting me over everyday hanging out from morning to night everyday sharing secrets and feeling safe but that will all change at some point and I give know fucks about a friendship I feel better this way no one is there to make fun of me for my imperfections or differences and make me feel bad... I don't think all people are horrible but they will end up hurting your feelings and putting a knife in your back at some point and it hurts the worst when its someone you knew really well and trusted and would of never thought the day would come or you just end up watching your whole established friendship crumble slowly....
how does that quote go, you can know love through a friend but only know divine love through an enemy
Stupid nerds acting like you have enemies. Losing a friend is far worse you emo idiots.
What a song for years it just getting better and better

Carl Renowitzky For me its more of an I'm already awake, and this song is what I want to say to people
Just a Peasant This and The Outsider
Carl Renowitzky ya i have always thought this song was about the anger you sometimes feel in desperate situations like his mother in a sense playing dead when she was paralyzed its definately a song of letting go and moving on from a perfect enemy like a dying paralyzed mother and there is nothing u can do about it.
this song will never get old srsly. after all these years i can still come back to it and feel h ow i did the first time i ever heard it
this song is immortal
I've always used this song in the gym. Especially the last part! It always helped with more reps. I would imagine myself as a hero like in the movie constantine wanting to help people and fight evil. I know it sounds like Cliche. The point is this song gives you that feeling of excitement.
Interesting how this was originally a Trent Reznor song, and here it is played by Maynard James Keenan. There is a connection that they both share: the friendship of Tori Amos, one of the most innovative female artists in the music industry. I find that really cool, personally...
actually they composed it together
Amanda he also did a song originally for the Trent reznor project with his other band Lucifer! It's called "potions" it's pretty amazing as well, completely different than this or any tool, more like nin if I had to choose a band it sounded like!
