Another issue is that most of these cards require power to run , which people have solved by modification or using the CD ROM SATA cable.

    Hi, how did you fix the high speed cooling fans on this server? It does not officially support GPUs, although everything works. But the R730xd does not recognize any GPU and turns on the cooling fans at full capacity (17200 rpm)

    • @ThePopolou
      @ThePopolou 2 роки тому

      It's highly likely because the Lifecycle controller detects non-dell components installed and so switches the fan profile to a higher level to ensure sufficient cooling. You can confirm this with an entry in the LC logs with code PCI3018. The fans then ramp up to over 30%. To correct for this, you have to send an IPMI code either via RACADM or if using a Linux os, the command line. Follow this link for instructions: serverfault.com/a/733064.

      I bought two P4s and put on one alternate riser 3 (x16 cpu1) and one on riser 2, slot 1 (x16 cpu2)
      Naturally dell gets pissy and you have to turn off 3rd party PCI check using IPMI tools to get the fans in check but you absolutely do NOT need the 1100 watt PSUs. @@CTOSERVERS Thank you very much for your answer. Indeed, the first slot which is not used in the video is blocked by two drive cages. But I removed them to install an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 770 CG ( see photos drive.google.com/drive/folders/13XuvgJiOwyuYHBQ78z7LmQ7N7zf2fFoJ?usp=sharing ). For my question on the second slot, I found :-) for it to be active, you need the dual processor on the motherboard, I'm assuming the PCIe slot used on the video is not on the same bus as the slot on the power supply side. By doing so, it allows me either to put the CG in SLI, or to install a sound card in 5.1. But in doing so, the CG struggles to breathe due to the heat from the two power supplies, especially since I removed the original fans which make a lot of noise. And suddenly, I have an overheating problem because I couldn't find a way to make the original fans run slower even in the IDRAC.

    The XD-documentation says it shouldn’t work but maybe it’s just a recommendation in case someone fills it up with 24x15k HDDs.
    What’s your take on that ”not-supported”?

    • @CTOSERVERS
      @CTOSERVERS  3 роки тому

      We have installed a few mainstream GPU's in the DELL R720 and R730 +. So far we haven't had any issues at all. The only thing that was a issue was the placement of the power connectors on the GPU's. You have to find the right make and model to allow the power cables to be plugged in. The TESLA and recommended cards that dell state , all have rear power connectors.

      @@DonnieKluck Yes, I bought an XD with 1100W PSUs and tested myself.
      I fitted a Tesla M60 and installed ESXi.
      Worked like a sharm.
      I think the whole ”not supported” thing is that people might fill it up with 26 15k spinners and a GPU.
      That will probably create cooling problems or load problems.
