Two things - Sorry for your loss bro, I had a friend that nearly lost his life in the same way, and secondly awesome vid man - seeing you do this install finally convinced me to pull the busted ass cluster out of my 86 that I'm restoring. I just ordered this intellitronix cluster but with the white display today. Hopefully it will make it here by the weekend - awesome stuff man thanks!
hey thanks buddy, yeah it's been rough I still can't believe he is gone. def sucks when you lose that one you know you can trust, the one you called every time you had a bad day or a good day. and the one who would always help. but yeah thanks for kind the words, means a lot. but on the digi it was cool to see it switched over, I never did hook up the dimmer wire for it. the fuel part was always jumpy, even when it was stock cluster, I need a new float in the tank, and the temp was off a bit on stock sender, but I wanted to find the main wire grounding in the cluster that went to the stock senders. even my oil pressure was higher on the digi, but I knew it worked. but in all I just did it for the look. hey thanks again any questions on it feel free to comment and ask, good luck with your restore! awesome car to have!
RANS87IROCZ Hey man - I used your vid this weekend to do the install - what a freaking help it was dude - I can't imagine having tried it without your help. My gas gauge is jumpy as hell too - not sure why because it's a new tank with a new float/sending unit - all that. Found out that the temp sensor they sent me was wrong (too small), AND the one I had in there was bad. $16 part and now it works great off the cluster AND it fixed the cooling fan issue I had. I haven't had a chance to get it out on the road yet - I don't have the car registered/insured, but I did manage to get a reading on the speedo because I do have a long enough driveway. I was wondering how you got those connectors to slip over the metal tabs in the cluster - I wound up grinding one side of the tab down a bit so they would slip on I had an old POS cluster that was perfect for this. I still want to have the cluster fully removable since I still have a little work to do and I might have to pull the dash again.
frostbx I bought the larger ones of those style connector I believe, and they slide right on though I was worried they might come off, so I squeezed them a bit with the needle nose pliers so they went on tight. but awesome to hear that vid helped. yeah and others said that about the fuel gauge too, maybe something with the unit can't measure the ohm reading from the stock sender. I was going to try new sending unit. but yeah I also ended up noticing off the stock temp sensor my reading is higher on digi to, I never did install the sender they sent and yep I did notice its threads was not the same to. crazy all the flaws they had for this kit, gray and white wire in my directions was wrong, since then they might of fixed that issue cause I had contacted tech support about it. then it was the trans sender they sent me was for v6 model and the biggest flaw, is our years the computer gets a signal from the stock cluster telling it how fast it's going kicking on the check engine light, but I lived with it though others have posted ideas, and one even broke it down to the science on here in the comments or on my other vid on it. but yeah likewise using other cluster is great idea, and for the wires that don't go inside to those tabs you can always buy a harness for them so its all plug and play swap. sweet idea, super glad my vid was helpful, thanks for watching
Yeah man the vid was a huge help. I wound up grinding one side of the connector and it worked out ok, although I had a little problem with slippage at first too. I used your method of squeezing with the needlenose and it tightened up nice. The only issue now is still with the temp reading - when I put it into gear it it changes by like 20-30 degrees. In any case, I haven't completely installed it just yet, so it could be a connection issue where the cluster plugs in.
Bro it looked fantastic. i know its been a while but i have to apologize for your loss man. i feel for you i lost a good friend back in 2012 and it stays with you. i hope your hanging in there and doing well and i hope you still got this camaro.
hey thanks for comment, no problems at all in the day time, it was pretty easy to see, but when sunlight was hitting right on it, still no problems reading, but you can see through the black and see the board, but the numbers was easy to read for sure, at night it just looks awesome, infact it so bright my camera picks up glare and doesn't show it right, like I see it at night. but cool you have a 91 I like the Dakota digital to, but this one was less so I went for it, thanks again
dude you was so right, and here I even once stripped one of these cars down to nothing, and still didn't notice the split cable. but your right! cable is 2 piece, and right under brake booster it lives, All you got to do is put it there, man. and I tried on the trans at first, but I'm going to order new cable and get speedo housing, and yep, I can't believe I didn't know this ever in all the 3rd gens I had in the last 15 years, thanks much bro for info
yeah I agree, mine reads slow to, its like I punch it, and at 1st, it has a slow responce on my speed, then once I hit like 45, and let off, samething, takes a second to back down, so I haven't driven it long enough to see if it works out, after all my speedo gear issues, I've been mad I can't find one for it. working on it, and more updates.
I'm currently building a pulse divider using a 4017b decade counter CMOS chip. The ECM in my car is a MAF TPI so it is expecting 2k pulse-per-mile but the intellitronix outputs 8kppm. The CMOS chip divides the count by 4k to achieve the correct pulse rate however it works like a charm on the test bench but there are still a couple bugs I'm working out. The ECM in your car IIRC is expecting 4kppm sinewave so for you it would be invert to alternating current and divide by 2.
hey thanks for the comment, hey I couldn't mine apart either by booster. when I find a new speedo housing I'm just going to order the lower part of the speedo cable to, then connect my sender right to it. but I was told by others they have a gps sender, and another sender that will screw on at trans, but yep I had directions, but they had much wrong! and reason I srewed up speedo housing. I made vid in hopes to meet others doing this to, for their tips or if they need info to, thanks again
well I read in directions, it works with cruise control but I never contacted tech support on it,cause mine doesn't have cruise. but I know some early model GM cars had a cruise box, where cable from trans went to it, and then other cable came off that and ran to speedometer. I'm not 100% on if 3rd gens had this style ever. maybe 85 and before. but yeah another told me that info on to hook it to that if you have it. but don't worry maybe it will thread on with no problems.
I seen a board for your year cluster, just never seen them on the market, but I think it has to be custom ordered for them. but hey thanks! and cool to hear your a fellow 3rd gen owner! love the torque from the 5.7!
hey thanks, yeah everything would be pretty close to the same, except if your current dash now just has lights that light up, like temp light, instead of temp gauge. could be different and you would have to run senders then and longer wire. also your style is coil in cap on engine, in 85. mine here is 87, has external coil. so the wire I run here would be different on yours for rpm, yours would go right to the cap off a wire on it. but for the most pretty close to the same hook up process
only thing on yours is in 86 they still had coil in cap, instead of external coil. everything else will be pretty much the same. so you will have to tap in the wires going to coil in distributor for your rpm. hey no problem on vid. I made it in hopes to help out anyone doing one of these, might not be the best on detail but I tried. so hey thanks for watching and good luck when you get yours any problems hit me up on here, I might be able to help, thanks again
update, to all 3rd gen owners who purchase this digi kit, speedo sensor must hook up to end of speedo cable off trans, not direct to trans, follow cable up and hook up new speedo sender at end of cable, located under the brake booster.
locate the one single gray wire on board ,connect to white wire on trans speedo sender, 2nd I found out the hard way, that speedo sender is designed to screw on cruise control box, so do you have cruise? I didn't and I ended up force threading that sender on my trans, and well, I need a new one, so if your sender for speedo doesn't screw onto where cable went on trans, don't force it on, but then you have to leave cable on trans, and yes rig this sender at other end of cable somehow
Thanks for the info. I went ahead and purchased a cluster from an 85 z28 and red led lights. I'm going to go that route for awhile. Thanks again though. Keep the third gens alive.
Dude,,wow. IT looks sooo sic!! im stuck on the tach though..lol. i have a box on my dizzy that says "tach bat"there are 2 plugs coming from there..1 with a red wire, and a white one..how am i supposed to tap into this?lol.i got the speedo working,,but i dont think i quite have it right yet. it seems slow to respond or something.i mailed them bout it not threading,,and they are sending me a different sending unit..i didnt know they had others...lookin very sic though! i love it so far.
crap,,i dont think i have cruise control.thanks for the heads up...i wonder what i can do now,,if anything.i have never messed with my speedo cable..i dont even know for sure what the ends look like on it.my trans is a 700-r4..im a lil worried now..lol..i dont wanna have to return it..damn..lol
hey no problem, anytime and thanks for your comment! I like the white with red on 3rd gens! looks good! I'm telling the red is sweet for the gauges. be cool for sure to get one for yours. not sure how much my vid helps but I tried, I didn't cover cruise control hook up, cause mine doesn't have it, but calling tech line might help from them. but hey thanks for watching and hope your install goes well when you order it up any problems post a comment, thanks again
dude that is awesome! you really know your stuff. I never researched those wires or tried to find out what type of voltage or signal was sent in those wires that went to the sensor on back of speedo, my car is also MAF TPI, so this should be what I need to do too. so awesome you got this down to the science.
hI! i finally got it in the mail! the instructions are a tad crude,,as im sure you are aware. Am i correct in assuming that i NO longer need my mechanical speedo cable? I just run a wire to the tranny? and also the instructions say run THE white wire to the tranny,,but i see TWO white wires, one by the speedo gauge and one by the rpm gauge,,,is this what they are talking about? thanks..i may have a couple more questions before im done..lol..but ill post a small vid too afterwards!
Got the same one in blue! Love it! Had the same issue with the tranny/intellitronix sender issue. Figured I'd put it in the cable break near the booster but still can't get the damn thing apart. Oh btw, mine was a new unit and didn't come with instructions, I emailed and called many time and they sent me a corrupt PDF file so it didn't work. I had to look at pictures of ones online and place everything together myself. Haha could have used this video then!!
I have a 1990 firebird and i am thinking about getting this digi kit , and was wanting to know if install directions are the same for my cluster set up ?
Good info when I could hear your video, maybe go over it and remaster the vid? Would be nice to hear all of the things you were doing:) Sad to hear about your tragic loss, needless accidents are hard to take. Hope you are doing much better these days. Video relevant even today, so redo it:) Take care! Cheers!
im not sure if i did what i needed to to calibrate the speedo..i just drove it around. it was all over the place at first..then it kinda evened out..i dont think its quite right though.or is this how its supposed to work?is yours perfect? what did you have to do if it is?
i asked them about what you said regarding the cruise control,,and they mailed back saying that wether or not i have CC makes no difference,,i will thread directly to my transmission..we will see about that..i sure it doesnt...my dealings so far have all been negative
I just told them that the area where the threads are (on thier sender)was not deep enouph, and no matter how much i pushed and twisted it just would not thread on. I got it delivered to my home 2 days later..they were cooperative. Maybe you can try asking like i did,,they DO make another sender! and it fits perfect.
no but I got a plan on it, I'm going to order the GPS hook up. then I got another speedo from another cluster, not my orignal. but use that speedo, I 'm going to hook the cable back to it, tuck it further back, behind the digi cluster. just the speedo, so that way its like having 2 speedo's. if I can make that cable and wire longer. I can even mount it external somewhere else. but that way the oem speedo is still there sending that signal.
for real? that means you do have a split cable, I swear mine is on piece all the way down, I'm going to double check tomorrow, but if it is like that I'm going shit, and lol maybe even on my intellitronix install directions I recieved! that sent me in wrong directions to from the start! but cool to hear that out man!, and well I still need a new speedo housing, I'm still bent about that
Hi, is there a chance anyone here got to find the right oil pressure sender? It’s always “99ing” my dash and its annoying since when the wire is disconnected - it’s 99 as well
Hey hey, awesome you did one of these, yeah think both my fuel and oil was higher then norm and bouncy all over the place, kinda lost intrest in it while ago and removed it all from such issues as needing the GPS sender vs trans one that screwed on cross threaded and destroyed my speedo assembly on trans, just a pain but did look wicked awesome in car
@@BlackThorne1987 they use to supply a sender for the oil pressure, but heck I used the oem one on the engine and was happy it least worked enough to know I had pressure, but never attempted to see if other gave me better reading vs near constantly maxed out
Did you ever manage to get a VSS signal back to your ECM? I installed one of these dumbass clusters into my car and am working on building an integrated circuit to do just that.
well,i went out to try and install this,,only to realize that they sent me an oil pressure sending unit,,not the speedo sesor.i got the water temp sender as well. Dealing with these people has been nothing but a hassle for me so far. i cant even get through to tech support. They lost my first dash kit in the mail(USPS) and i had to open an ebay case against them to send me another kit. the first one is still yet missing in action...im getting frustrated lol...
its no biggie, just don't make the same mistake I did. but just try at 1st to to screw that sender on the trans, where your cable would go, if it don't screw on right, don't force it, I'm going to make a remake vid after I find replacement gear, showing how I will adapt the sender to end of cable where it meets the stock speedometer. not sure why Intellironix did this, infact for the most they owe me a speedohousing for lack of info,I'n not complaining though, I like the digital look
But i followed the cable all the way up till i found a spot where it screwed into another shorter section of cable,,so i tried that and i threaded right on!! thats all the further i got. They really need to fix thier instructions. i mailed them about it.anyway,,im one step ino it so far lol

Nice vid man. I have an 85 camaro sport coupe, so would I be able install this as easy as you?
did you end up removing the old stock odometer as well..after taking the stock speedometer gauge off?

hey thanks was a days work, few little things to workout, but for the most its done
wasn't to bad, just took some time, would of been a pain if I didn't have that power probe, made it easier for me alot

yep, its part of it, I also don't know how to put or add current milage on it, so I start fresh at zero, I put over 70 miles on new digi so far
