Mr Steele in my opinion you, Kabab Fpv and Mr Bardwell make the best technical video so please keep making them and let the haters hate that how you know your in the top 1% of your field.
Betaflight idle up how to: I changed following parameters: set min_command = 1060 (was 1000 by default), set min_throttle = 1050 (was 1070 by default) and set pid_at_min_throttle = OFF (was ON by default). On top of that, I added an override throttle Channel switch with val=-100 in my taranis and set min microsecond to 1068 on throttle Channel output.
Idle up should be use together with airmode? Or can it be use together with acro also?
Idle up is totally the way to go! I’ve been using it since the video you and Snake did. Bend those props back nearly perfect after a crash! I wouldn’t have known about it with out your help, THANK YOU man! 😀👍
Thank you man :). Cheers
Mr. Steele, thanks for all that you do FPV! I just switched my kiss v1 alien over to idle up from air mode. i have to say it was a little weird at first, but it is much more stable and dont get any weird drops going from full stick to 0 stick input on the throttle. after flying a few packs like this idk why anyone would want to use airmode. thanks again and keep these types of videos coming.
Thank you for sharing the knowledge, I used the video to successfully set up idle up. I'm on Betaflight and like G3R FPV mentioned on the comments below I use the set pid_at_min_throttle = Off command to get it to behave more like you like Kiss. I have tested on the bench and did a hover and I'm liking the fact that I don't get the "air mode" bounce I can just land the quad without any drama.
THX a lot you save my night XD
I just did this on the KISS G4, really a neat feature. Thanks for this tutorial!
you're the man! Nothing new but always good explainations! Thanks!
We’ll said Steele🤘🏻. And thanks for that tip on idle up
Its not that we think its something special that steele does it, its that you have some very excellent video based learning bruh... give yourself some credit - you make good informative content.. i dont want to read a 2500 page technical document.. this video told me everything i needed to know and now i can go try out idle up tomorrow.. thanks.
Good info. From my days as a 3-D heli pilot, I just add a rotary dial to the throttle channel mixer as an accessory throttle or governor. It's not sophisticated like airmode or as convenient as a switch, but it's a super simple setup and is infinitely adjustable while flying.
Steele I stumbled upon your channel a few weeks ago after I got a Mavic Pro and now I want to build an alien and learn your moves. I’ve learned so much in the last few weeks just by watching your vids. Keep up the good work
Super helpful video! Also the tangents you have like the one about home in China are why I love this channel.
Haha. 🙏🏼
I just configured an OG Kiss V1 Rotor Riot 5" Alien (Built to FinalGligeAus original Alien Build Video) to this setup, along with the taranis xd9 plus transmitter. Thanks Mr. Steele.
I’ve been using it since Snake explained it after his blind test with you, and I absolutely love it! Thanks
Idle up and air-mode are actually two different things where idle up is simply raising (trimming) the throttle output level at min stick input, air-mode on the other hand changes the response of the PID controller to input. They can be used together or separately and should not be confused with each other. Especially for those using BetaFlight.
Can idle up use together with acro mode? Does it get benefit (hang time) from it?
Thanks for this Steele. I've got Idle up on 1 switch.
So true about where you have the Throttle stick before initializing Idle up. Especially when using Smart audio to change channels etc. lol
Man, yesterday I was thinking about trying idle up. Good timing.
Just tried it. Worked very nice.
regarding the problem mentioned at 18:50 i wrote a lua script that gives you a throttle warning. Just add the script as a special function to the idle up switch.
local running = false
local timenow
local function init_func()
end
local function run_func()
if not running then
timenow= getTime()
if getValue('ch1') > -1000 then
playFile("/SOUNDS/en/system/thralert.wav")
running = true
end
end
if running then
if timenow< (getTime() - 300) then
running = false
end
end
end
return {run = run_func, init=init_func }
Idle-up comes from RC heli's putting the motor at 90% and only changing the pitch of the blades. Back in the day with the first acro quads we would just set our IU throttle curve to start at 10%. Take off in normal, IU in the air. AFAIK "Airmode" is the same thing, and having the motors spin-on-arm is also the same. This seems so much more complicated than it used to be
It’s the way I know. :(
No worries, times and technology changes! Love your videos by the way, I used to fly hard LOS acro but just picked up my first fpv racer and goggles. Thanks for the quality content and explanations :)
Justin Pryde airmode on betaflight is reaches much deeper than bumping up the throttle to keep the PID loops active. there’s a lot more going on and, in some cases (full throttle) i think it’s forced on regardless of settings... so there really is likely a noticeable difference between idle up and airmode on BF at least. which is better? i dunno. but dayum i wish BF would let me spin the props to check for bends / damage rather than hand spinning motors like a dope. seriously it would be really nice! i hadn’t even thought of that side benefit.
Doesn't Airmode change the PIDs at low throttle to keep things consistent? Or am I mixing things up?
edit: Oh, and also, doesn't it allow the props to stop while still keeping the quad responsive to the sticks, allowing for greater air time when upside down?
Bro this video has some hidden gems in it besides teaching idle up which I really don’t need lol cuz I use air mode but you just taught me a nice new way of centering sticks when my gimbals are worn or on a new quad when those numbers aren’t correct that only recently just started to happen with one of my quads.
Thanks for finally making this one. I have been flying idle up for a while and love it. The pros decently out way the cons. And the quad seems to “float” more, in a good way, using idle up. Could just be my imagination though.
thanks! love to se more vids like this. let the haters hate. you say in every vid its the way you do it. and thads how it is! you cant tell someone what to do, just inform people with the info you have and what works for you.
keep up the good work
🙏🏼. You got it man. And I thank you for the well spoken comment. Have a fabulous week. Cheers
@@MrSteeleFPV same to you mate!
I'm setting up my quad TOMORROW. So convenient for you to post this haha
Super great video Steele, thanks.. getting my first alien in the air
You can also set your special function condition to !SE-mid to only have the one position in the middle not override throttle.
you are one awesome dude mr. steele .thanks for the nice info .. i am building a mr. steele alien right now, and i cant wait to fly it.. have a nice day and best regards from denmark
THANKS for the tutorial
You're the best!
Thank you !...was waiting for this for so long haha
been waiting for this since the video with snake thanks
Just got out of the drs office getting my finger repaired😂. Setting mine up still and went to arm it in my hand, it freaked out and screamed and chewed my finger up. Was my stupid fault for even considering it, but once armed, it screams, so it needs to be tuned some more.
please do this video again on the Tango 2
This is a great tutorial! I literally never pay this much attention to all the settings in the radio like this but I've always wondered how do I get the response to be perfect. Thank you again Steele!
Ok so Betaflight can also do this if you play with the "pid at idle" setting in the CLI. I tried setting up my gear like you had in that one Snake FPV video a while back and really loved it since. However, I do fly with airmode as I have never gotten "idle up" to fly well. This might just be preference I guess. I do have airmode on a switch so if I don't want to bounce while going under a car for example I can just turn it off, but for the most part I just use this to inspect my props like you explained... Awesome video Steele. Happy flying from South Africa :)
Griffus FPV this is How you do it👍🏻 ua-cam.com/video/KAVexAd-gBE/v-deo.html
I haven’t tried Idle up in years, I think I want to go back and give it a shot mostly for prop checking.
I wish Felix would add a switch that would just spin the motors at idle without gyro.
Still useful in 2021, thanks ^^
Just came to KISS. awesome feature
Thanks a bunch it helped me out
Thanks for the info my dude. Full support. I am ignorant as fuck and wasn't able to find info that helped me on this, been waiting for months. #fullsend
Full send lol. Get it my dude
Really appreciate the lesson. Wasn't in love with air mode on kiss. Going to give this a shot today. My first build. Kiss is incredible. Feels loose and tight at the same time. Very crazy to explain. Going to take me a while to tune. I'm only some what familiar with clean flight. I never seen anything yaw so fast. Had no idea yaw rates would be so far different then default clean flight tune. Lots to learn. Greatly appreciate the details set up 👍
I just use airmode on a momentary switch and landings are all good.
Same here. Air mode , arm and black box all on one switch. Never had an issue with bounce on landings.
Scooter Pie I have been telling people that I do the same as you but it seems awkward to most people. I love it though!
I know, I went to the races and a few pilots there looked at me like I was from another planet.
It just makes sense to me, cuz I take off and land on a deck above the ground... Also, I can put on a little throttle to see if all is good, pull down the goggles, take off, engage air mode, and rip.
Mr Steele "Ethix" Idle up explaination from you is more gradifying :)
Can't wait to get a kwad!!!!!!!
In Betaflight you have a Motor Stop function which should be disabled, also there you can set the min throttle, which usually is like around 1050. Has nothing to do with airmode iirc.
Fire T here is how you do it in betaflight ua-cam.com/video/KAVexAd-gBE/v-deo.html
Lots Of Great Information! Thanks
Awesome dude - thank you for this - keep up the great work ✌🏻😎
Thank u for this video
Great video - thanks for sharing your setup!
precision landing is a good point. it is a little more difficult with air mode.
Awesome and informative vid. Thanks for the lesson!!
I started using idle up about a year ago I like it a lot better than air mode. Its hard to explain I fell more connected, but that is just my personal opinion.
That whole drag race thingy with the throttle, you can use a few special functions to create a safety feature. So idle up would only work when throttle is low.
Yassss! Thanks Steele. I've been meaning to try this on KISS, but it's always been super confusing... until now. Ahhh. I remember back when it was yaw left - yaw right to arm and disarm and my crap used to fall out of the sky all the time. :)
Hahah. So much falling out of the sky back in the day
thanks for the "special sauce" !
Cool video again! Just one point : we can add a logical switch to not let the idle up switch get activated if input throttle is higher than a certain value. That'll solve all your problems! :) Cheers!
good tip and with some history too, gracias
Nice one Steele. Yeah I had the same thing happened to me, with the throttle then turn on the gyro my quad was up on the tree! 😅
Thanks for answering my email, I know your a busy guy so I really appreciate the time you took to reply to me! Great videos as always man.
Finally, hard facts, thank you..!!
"I was refering to the KISS info"
Thank you thank you thank you for this video
Airmode is something I've been trying to figure out cause people say they use airmode but I personally do not at all like what it does with airmode. My quads take off as soon as I arm and I can't drop down into things cause it wants to fly. Landing is difficult too. I'm hoping idle up with my cheaper betaflight quads will help in dropping down holes and landing.
Really a good tips 👍thanks
Fixed it! Thank you!
Thansk for that bro.
Greetings from Germany
Thank you Bro.......!!!!
damn thanks for the video. im late as fuck been flying fpv for years and just followed this guide to get idle up setup, and i realized i never sub trimmed any of my quad setups of the years, i never knew about subtrimming i feel so dumb thinking about it now. thanks for the info
This is one of those things Ive always wondered about so I could check my props better like you do but never checked into since I'm on beta now butterflight… Now I see from the comments its been possible for a while and thanks to MBJ-FPV for his video!
Nice one steele, spread the knowledge! I used idle up, I’ve done it a different way but my quad doesn’t arm unless the throttle is at 0 .
Airmode is sweet as, just disarm to land. *Brick landing*
👎🏾
Activating PID/gyro with non-zero throttle via idle up switch seems to be the major safety issue for me, Betaflight got it right with zero throttle arm requirement. Arming with two middle position switches after failsafe in extreme situations seems to be the safety issue as well, zero throttle + one switch is safer and easier to trigger.
The 'quad bounces wildly in a random direction when you hit something' is an irritating side-effect of airmode, at least on BF with my flying, eh, crashing skills it is.
However, I found that enabling 'crash recovery' eliminates this. Crash recovery puts your quad in level mode for a few hundred (configrable) milliseconds when it detects a crash, just enough to regain orientation and keep on flying instead of ending up in the tree branch next to the one you just hit.
Personally I think airmode works better than idle up when not hitting stuff. There is also wind etcetera with which airmode just copes better than a raised idle.
thx for this one!
You can add an extra special function that only actually arms when throttle is at zero position, it really complements this setup and makes it safer for sure! This makes it real safe and prevents quad taking off to the moon if throttle is anything more than zero before idle up trigger is engaged. i'll try to post a video showing this tomorrow.
Im a newbie, but my idea is using a 3 way switch. Up position is disarmed, middle position is low idle, down position is high idle. The arm function is a combination of either middle OR high on the 3-way AND down on the regular 2-way arm switch. Arming requires 2 separate switches to be something other than down, so its less likely to happen by accident.
I fly with airmode and if I land really hard I get that bounce. But if you come in controlled and softly you can fly around the bounce and avoid it.
I agree, however if you're doing a trick and ur battery happens to sag and you tap th ground at a slight angle the quad shoots/bounces off into a tree so I changed to this.
Thanks so much for this! Really interesting...
Hell YEAH BROTHER!!! Rock that shit. Cats meow 😎
man i could really use two switch arming, i think stingy explained it before for betaflight. i remember when airmode bounced around on landing but i think it was fixed last year. it would be really cool to have idle up though just to check motors and props and esc's, one good thing for betaflight is it wont arm until throttle is zero'd
That was interesting, thanks!
Used idle up when flew helicopters. I use air mode on drones. Never thought of using idle up on drones.
Good info I miss you and Chad N in rotor riot vids
I have an “idea” for a new video, talk about how long you can use crashed propellers, before swapping. This would be interesting :)
Lol longer than you’d think
I use mine even after repairing my propeller blades with pliers, i have not killed a single hq prop yet :D and i crasged hard :)
And by the way, your rig flies amazing 👍 props to you an your company ethix 🙂 keep it up 👍
Sweet bruh!!!
Idle Up in kiss is something completely different then airmode in betaflight.
In betaflight comparable thing is simple the button "don't spin motors when armed" deactivated.
That makes your motors spin when armed so you don't stop your motors in air when going zero throttle. Airmode does something different but also does that, so it's more of an side effect.
Airmode again is something different completely.
Without airmode if you are falling(after you went up high and cut throttle) and give command for a roll, one side of motors gets spun up for example 20% and the other side 20% slowed down. Since you are at minimum throttle anyway it can NOT get slowed down more then your min command (idle motors barely running) and your kwad behaves different on low or nearly max throttle situations.
With airmode on, say you are at 5% throttle doing the same roll, one side gets spun down to idle from 5% even if it should have been 20% less, but the other side that should have spun up 20% gets spun up 20% plus 15% to give you same roll behaviour as when you were mid throttle.
Basicly without air mode in betaflight, in low throttle situations your flight controller is limited on how much force it can command the escs to keep or change the orientation.
Most easy said as I could:
Without air mode hover the quad on half throttle and bumping it it will aggressive fight against the bump. On low or min throttle it will fight the bump very tame. Air mode on it will fight the bump as aggressive as on half throttle.
On super high powered quads that might not be so noticeable cos 5% up on one side and 5% down on the other will already make you spin crazy. But in any zero throttle situation you should notice the difference.
I have aux1 on a 3way switch. Down is off.. medium is armed and high is armed plus airmode. So i can lift off or check the quad with airmode off and it behaves realy tame and doesn't try to eat my face.
You could setup some logical switches so that you can't enable the idle up switch unless the throttle is all the way down. That'd solve your problem there.
You need 2 logical switches:
L01 - A
Or you can use the lua script described in the top comment here: ua-cam.com/video/oMQidtp0F0k/v-deo.html&lc=UgzWvIN4AHnkhROUWGV4AaABAg
It will repeatedly warn you while idle up is active and the throttle is not way down.
Geeeeee I haven’t used idle up for yearzzz, I’ll give it a try and see how it goes 😊 onya lad
Bf has "dynamic idle" first thing I thought was "that sounds a lot like idle up but on the flight controller." (in the sense that a lower motor speed is available to the pid controller than the nominal idle speed, a side benefit to idle up if you tune the throttle curve a bit) I always thought the active pid on idle was unsafe. And that attenuation of it was stupid. I thought the best way to do things was to make the pid and mixer see things in terms of thrust and torque. And some features on bf are going that way but then it's a mess of cli without much to alert you that it's even a thing.
New age fpv kids will never know the joys of los .lol
you are wrong:) Gyro can be desactivated the same way in betaflight while motors are spinning. That is not only with Kiss.
instead of a Special function for Switch up and one for Switch down you can simply use Switch not at Center and save a line...
thx mr steve lol
In kiss airmode is on all the time if. So when you idea up you are in airmode.
I finally did it!!!😂
Big like!!!
To prevent the drone from going from zero throttle to whatever position the throttle stick is when you arm it, I added another special function which is : IF [throttle value] > [min throttle] AND [Idle up switch] is not activated THEN overwrite [arm switch value] to [disarmed].
Could you make a video on this? I would like to add this to my Taranis. Thankyou in advance!
as soon as i press my Throttle on my radio the drone just keeps flying up!! why is this happening. please help! I'm tiered of walking after drone when it shoots 1000 miles away :(
That Middle switch Arm is confusing to try and translate it to a Tango 2, can you make this video showing the setup on the Tango2 using the left A button to arm, and the right D button to idle up, PLEASE?
did you find out how to do it in a tango 2?
Did you guys find out how to do it on tango 2
Interesting . Me running the other system didn't realize I accidentally bumped a switch on the radio to "Angle Mode" when I tried to check the props in "Air Mode". I was ready for the gyro to buck back as I armed the drone to check . When I armed I kept my grip tight on the drone . Trust me , that 6 inch drone went hell bent for horizontal with all its might . I was not hurt but for the next 30 seconds my face had fear written ALL over it . Trust you me I will look into rectifying the situation . And love the how to vids (^^)\m/
Hey Mr Steele. You mentioned in this video that "AIRMODE ON" in quads can cause quads to go berserk when it hits an object. If a quad is configured with "IDLE UP" and quad also hit an object, will quad also go crazy?
On kiss no lol. On everything else. Yes
I just had an "Oh shit, mine does that!" moment, when you were describing what happens when you hit one blade, and it shoots the quad some other direction, usually so fast, I can't react in time. I'll either do this, or does the "pid_at_min_throttle=off achieve the same thing? Have you made a video on that and I haven't seen? I know I'm going to get off air mode just the same. I too, am tired of the bouncing landings. Makes me look like the beginner I am.
Transmitter company really missed the boat on a great opportunity: Saurus RX.
