Wondering what the heck this "air mode" thing is, what it ACTUALLY does, and why it matters? I know I was! In this video I'll show you an example of airmode in action, and what the practical applications are for it!
This is the radio I use www.banggood.c...
BTW, in case you are just jumping in to RC flight, the different flight modes I make reference to are some of the optional modes used in controlling our RC quadcopters (AKA miniquad / freestyle / racing "drones"), which are accessed and customized by connecting the quadcopter flight controller (brain) to a computer and using a downloadable application called a "configurator" (most commonly Betaflight) to adjust the various flight settings.

Fellow flysky user👌🏽
Yeah! Flysky is way under rated! Very high value for what it is.
huzzah a man of quality
I love the receivers 👍👍
the death roll was a desync of one or more motors. it happens when your minimum throttle is set too low.
Thank you!!! I crashed my drone today (something similar happened in this video) I didn't know why
@@jeissonortiz1613 dude mine crashed like that too wtf
Gaston Lagaffe! M'enfin... 👍🤪
nice info
That's good to know, thanks 👍
Such a great explanation, simple and straight to the point
I am a stander, too many ants where I fly :-)
Great review of AIR mode, finally I understand what it does.
Good point! I don't like ants!
Finally an explanation that actually makes sense. Thank you!
Airmode actually keeps the pid loop active at zero throttle, it keeps the props spinning so you don't just drop out of the sky. Airmode allows you too stay inverted without falling uncontrollabley
What? Why does this comment even have 12 likes when its wrong. Acromode absolutely doesnt just turn off the motors when throttle is at zero. Like never, theres always like at least 3-7% power when throttle at zero. So what youre saying isnt the difference between acro and air. The difference is that in acro at zero throttle when falling all motors will be spinning at the same speed on the designated minimum motor speed of about 5% or whatever is chosen (when not giving any input). In air mode the props wont all spin at the same speed but rather on didferent speed, also never lower than the minimum motor speed of 5% or whatever is set bc they will compensate for any outside force acting on the quad with the goal of keeping it at a constant angle. So to be clear, both modes keep the motors spinning at zero throttle input, but airmode uses stabilization to keep the angle and acro doesnt
@@baadlyrics8705 go and fly without airmode on, take it in the air and drop too zero throttle. The quad will drop out of the sky!
Now do the same with airmode on.... Then tell me the difference.
@@Originaljonny2badwhat his saying is both airmode and acro mode will keep the motors spinning at a set power. Air mode doesnt keep your drone up in the air the way you think. In acro the drone will drop out of the sky with no correction , air mode will try and keep your last position "orientation wise" . The only reason you might think your drone might be a lil more floaty in airmode is because when your drone is falling out of the air, the flight controller tries to keep he last orrientation that was set. Say your drone is top heavy and tends to lean to the right when free falling, the flight controller will try to fight that force to stay in the orientation it was set. Say your roll to the right a bit and your drone is top heavy, without airmode your drone will simply just roll uncontrollably while in airmode , it actively tries to keep that orientation
@@neilbaquiran643 your sooo wrong, go do some research
great explanation man! and kudos to you for leaving that crazy crash in, great to see real flying!
this "death roll" must came from air mode. today i had first time airmode because a mistake ... and then i got this death roll too... yesterday it was all fine without airmode
Nothing better than this !
Omg,now i know airmode vs arco,love u sir..
*Flies over brothers Vape tricks*: ADAM!
The best explanation about the air mode i have ever seen . Thank you!!
Wow, thanks!
Actually it's better than explanation from one of the Inav developers. (I'm using Inav)
Good explanation. Covered all points I guess.
Good explanation with real comparisons
Very good explanations. Simple and efficient.
Thank you!
Finally thank you Adam , I’m on day 3 of flying fpv ,only been hovering in stable mode with out the goggles . I decided I’m just going to go for it after watching video after video never flown a quad before and can’t get on with a simulator, but I’m flying it about doing flips a couple of bit will try post up progress and I like to sit , but find I start leaning into the turns as if I’m sitting on it hahahaha
Hello, try fpv freerider. You can also use it on a tablet en most phones (app store) And you can also use your transmitter. It helps me a lot and I'm a pretty good fpv flyer now. Also important, you can learn to fly including tricks without damage.
I'm in the same boat, first flight I tried line of sight stable but ended up just smashing my quad into things and mashing up the props/lipo. I decided just to go with it the second flight and I personally find it much easier diving straight into the goggles and airmode. I was doing flips into rolls and freefalls straight away only crashed once due to pushing past my abilities rather than no control
New to flying drones...thought my TinyHawk 2 was messed up cause it would act crazy when it landed. One research led me to air mode and another to your video. Thank you so much for the explanation...Saved me hours of diagnosing my drone for no reason.
So did you determine it to run better or worse with airmode?
@@maridkamuju9316 i know its an old comment but i thought id answer you, airmode on a tiny whoop should not be enabled unless your flying in open air outside with nothing to hit, its so much better with airmode off on a whoop because it will actually bump off of things without having a spaz and crashing, just if you take it outside and do punch outs with airmode off on a whoop then it gets very very wobbly coming down, and can get caught in its own dirty air and flip out of the sky, but for bigger quads where your outside punching out and stuff its much more fun and precise with airmode on, just if you start to crash you need to disarm straight away often missing a chance where if airmode was off you could have recovered, but its good to try both so you get a feeling for what it does and when its useful and when you should have it off, because you might find the freefall effect more fun for your flying style as you pop over objects and kinda drunkenly freefall it is really fun, but if you do a lot of punch outs then it can get rreallly sketchy sometimes if its gusty or you get into your propwash, but if you feed in like 10% throttle you get rid of a lot of the sketchyness, but sometimes you want less throttle, moral of the story, just try both, and give them both a good amount of time to feel out how they are different from eachother
Great explanation!
I'm a stander!
Nice video :)
The end is top:)
Thank you!
Good start brother, keep em coming 👍
Standing took practice but I much prefer it
Thanks, will do!
I have much more control when I sit.
I understand why people use the pinch method, it seems that it would give more control, although, I am a thumber, because for some reason, when try to pinch, I cannot keep my quad in the air. Standing, on the other hand, I can't understand why someone would rather stand, if they have the option to sit?
I'm a wannabe sitter, but most often I end up standing for pragmatic reasons. I will sit if I can, or lean on the car if that's nearby.
Cool
that spiral crash is a big mystery
From what i understand it happened bc of motor desync which often can happen when the minimum throttle is set too low
I sit but i stand sometimes, then i get dizzy , then i sit , then i get excited and then i stand....
thank u so much!
So is are mode basically stabilized acro mode??
I couldnt run airmode on, everytime I would arm with air mode active my drone would fling into the air on its own even with the throttle closed
Mine had no horizon . Just airmode and acro . It doesn't even have modes tab in betaflight . Airmode seemed like when lenses get broke in binoculars and the picture gets bent . But you can lean it back sirt of with the sticks . Sort of like auto flip on a toydrone . Real popular with the freestyle regime rigid style .
Standing. That way, it’s easier to duck under things.
great explanation! i lean or sit :)
I am afraid to fall over when doing flips. So I'm a sitter
Fry a motor or something? I like to sit. Also use Airmode
sitter. i only stand if i am standing on a wall or anything sturdy on my back
Should you tune I with airmode off??
To answer your question at 1:55:
If I don't start off sitting, I end up sitting in the most awkward way possible as soon as things get hairy! And, yes, I get that "into" video games as well! LOL =^.^=
Entertaininig
I deleted the dumbest and most stupid comment forgive me bro you really good and nothing is worng with the vid im new at fpv so im idiot again forgive me for the bad comment and I deleted the old comment and keep up you really good I watch your videos all the time bro 😍
I'm a sitter, my knees get wobbly otherwise.
I HAVE to sit. Damaged middle ear. If I stand, I'll fall down.
Ouch, is this one ear, or both? Can you drive a car or ride a bicycle normally?
One ear. Had an ear infection as a kid.
Usually okay. No problem walking or driving.
But I definitely use visual input to compensate.
Good night vision, but if it's dark ENOUGH, I have trouble standing upright.
I do the Quad FPV thing, but always seated.
Thank the GODS I'm not prone to motion sickness! I'd be queasy every day.
totally just crashed my first fpv drone in a river, somewhat i guess, due to airmode. going ~15-20mph through a nice little golf cart path in the woods, bumped a tree, zoomed off in the opposite direction right smack into the river
Whats the difference between acro mode and nothing? I still can't figure out what acro does when turned on?
There is no "nothing". You have to be in some kind of mode. Its like asking "what is the difference between an automatic gearmode car and a nothing gearmode car. There always is some kind of mode on and acromode is essentially the mode where you completely control the quad yourself without any assistance from the quad like self leveling etc.
does it make sense to aktivate airmode in angle + horizon mode too or only in acro mode?
So with the death roll its kinda hard to know whether or not you want air mode on or off completely lol....I would definitely have to set the throttle threshold for airmode to activate and deactivate at certain throttle levels ....
So whats the difference between air mode and angle mode
Sorry im still a beginner
Stander from day 1 and because not having a habit it was almost too easy.
Hello Adam , Thanks for this helpful video it really helps ppl like me. I have a Mobula 6, I'm having trouble with the trimming or calibration. It just won't fly right, I've tried to calibrate and trim it but is nit working. Soon as I start to lift of it drifts at different direction and its impossible to control it, drone seems to have mind of its own. I think there's a bug in firmware or God knows, How can I factory reset the drone make it how it was from factory? Anyone?
Disable accel,
Is that roll due to i term windup???
Thanks Adam just configured my own quad in Betaflight and was using Horizon mode armed with airmode in Beta. And I thought I could only do flips and rolls and come back to level after....So cool with zero throttle input the quad stays at the last orientation such as a sideways freefall!! Great explanation!! Acro is fun with goggles as well, but I have lots of crazy aerobatic Line of sight Horizon/ Airmode on fun! Thanks again. Subbed! By the way I am a stander..Otherwise if i sit , it shows people my true laziness. hahah Just kidding ahaha
Could u please advice what the motor and esc did u use. I like to.hear they scream.
Damn you explain this way better than Joshua Bardwell not bashing. Thank you..
Glad I could help! and thanks for the feedback! Could you tell me which part, or what it was that I said that helped you understand airmode better? (this would really help me improve my videos)
@@RCwithAdam1 Everything about the video was informal. Thank you for your time.
What a comic! Funny
Sitter, I fall over standing.
i always sit
Totally a chair guy
I can't fly and sit for some reason. I also sucked at flying completely until I tried pinching
Interesting! 🤔
I have the same problem with airmode...... fycjjjj
Only if I'm NOT flying my DJI Phantom 3, then I prefer sitting while flying
great outro, you can be yourself then ;)
😁
What would you recommend to clean the mud off quads? I was thinking Isopropyl alcohol and a swab? I have a novice 2 to get me started but done the same as you faceplanted a few times in the mud
Contact cleaner spray does the job done.
Yeah isoprop is the best you can use, even better than contact cleaner spray in my opinion. But dont use the 70% isoprop, you need the close to 100% one obviously
Hi Adam , if I have airmode on a switch and turn it off lets say when landing will it freak out as it does sometimes when airmode is activated . Thank you !!
Hi! Good question! It shouldn't. I think a lot of people use that same technique (being able to turn off air mode). Really, if you can land gently it's not a problem, but I think that would be useful if you're just starting to learn how to fly (and land).
this is Jumanji alex
sorry noob here. Is air mode...and acro mode a feature thats in the quad? or in the transmitter radio that you buy?
Hi! Good question. It is in the quad.
Hi Adam so as a beginner, I have Airmode enabled in BF and Acro Trainer permantley on. Does this seem to be ok? Thx. Great video .
I don't see anything wrong with that. Welcome to the hobby!
Hi, did you find out what caused the spiral thing? I have that issue quite often, even when I'm just flying normally without doing any flips. Please help!
Not yet. It's still a bit of a mystery. But I think I'm having the same (or similar) issue with another totally different quad, so it may not be the Mamba stack.
So airmode explained in 1sec:
Airmode is a stabilised version of acro.
(And verry useful for PID noobs)
Is this correct?
Hi! Close enough, I'd say. 👍
Sitter. Les confusing. Try to stand but not working for me. That way when sitting you can relax and enjoy the flight
Good points. I do find it hard sometimes to maintain my balance when my quad gets into tricky situations.
Im a stander
Thanks. Why on minute 2:59, when you cut the throttle the quad have a little oscillation?
You mean when it pitches forward? I think that is due to the PID settings. I'm pretty sure turning on "Anti-gravity" would fix that.
RCwithAdam I mean in 2:59, at the same time that you cut the throttle, i see some oscillation. I notice this effect in my quad, too. But I think that it makes this effect since I mounted the action cam. It could be the added weight of the hd cam. Perhaps increasing the minimum throttle in Betaflight, it could be solved. I have to try to remove the action cam. Thanks
@@rinux505 Good point about the min throttle. Let us know how that works out.
Both stander n sitter.
Are you one of the stark brothers?
I don't think so
When I use air mode my quad will free fall so slowly if I'm angled anything less than 90°, any idea why this could be?
You may have a high throttle idle. You can turn it down via betaflight, but don't turn it down too much or you could have reliability issues (like desyncs) with the motors.
@@RCwithAdam1 I'll check it out, thanks! 👍
@@RCwithAdam1 yeah, and the desync is what happened in the video when you lost control there at the end im pretty sure
So then you dont want airmode turned on when your flying indoors with a tiny whoop or tinyhawk?
I usually have airmode turned on. But y ok I may notice the quad be a bit more sporadic when it crashes into things.
@@RCwithAdam1 Okay I thought so. So do you notice a difference flying indoors with airmode turned on and off?
Why is it spinning?
Probably bc of motor desync caused by too low min throttle
Stander can't fly right sitting down
i stand
Did the quad get damaged after this?
Nah it was ok!
Well i can do both. Sitting and standing, but i prefer sitting, cuz i'm a lazy little b*tch.
im a stander lol
I prefer to stand and tend to sway when flying. If I sit on a chair I would have dropped off the chair.
Arm mode is Acro isn't it
Hi! No. "Arming" just means allowing the throttle to work. "Acro" is a type of flight mode that means you have the ability to move the quad any way you want and do flips and rolls (think "acrobatic").
@@RCwithAdam1 Oh Okay Thank You
Your tune is off, on punch out your quad leans to front right on punch outs. It may just be me but you may wanna have a look.
Yeah. It was being weird.

I like to stand
