I get this question all the time.

Hey Alvin, you know what I was thinking? I was talking to a buddy today about all the different materials used to tie different flies and the cost of these materials. How about a vid on half a dozen different materials ie. deer buck tail, hooks maybe one of two different sizes. Just enough to make a couple different flies and friendly to the pocket book? I know I get frustrated with all the different things that people use. Lets keep it simple. I had a thought?????? PNW Homie

The intense satisfaction of catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself, or even better, designed!

Tying flies for me is relaxing. I'm an auto mechanic and after a long week of beating and banging my hands all day everyday it's very soothing.

I have been tying for over 30 years and find it relaxing when I can’t fish . The creative part is the best part after that it becomes repetitive. In the past 30 years I have seen the material costs sore and in some case have tripled. One of things I enjoy the most is when I catch fish on flys I designed and tied . Is it cheaper , I don’t think so . But when it’s -20 out and won’t be warm for another couple months and is dark at 4:00pm it helps fill the fly boxes .

I am convinced that fly fishing, fly tying and fly material buying are 3 distinct and expensive hobbies!

The reason why I like tying so much myself is that I can tie stuff for my specific needs. Also, with modern streamers costing anywhere between 6 and 15 dollars, I don't cuss so much when I lose one if I tied it. The thing with tying for me is that I don't really save any money, I just have way more flies than I would if I had to buy them all.

Tying flies keeps me motivated tbh. Tying some flies and sitting back looking at my boxes drives me to get out and throw them. Normally tie way more in the winter to pass the time. Love these videos 👍🏼

Definitely explains your guide fly videos. I love them, easy and effective. My two cents. Is it cheaper? NO, but is it worth it YES. It is rewarding YES. Probably not going to break even unless you go crazy tying game changers. I like tying nearly as much as fishing. It is very therapeutic , and rewarding when you catch a fish on one of your ties.

I tell myself it saves money but….. I tie more for the creativity and relaxation now. I also like it when my fishing party all catching fish on flies I have tied. The challenge of visiting the fly shop and trying to create that pattern has became an obsession. But overall the ability to pull a fish in something you have tied is the number one reason.

Now that I'm established with my equipment and materials, and I know what I'm doing, and tying articulated and spey style streamers, I thinking that it's probably going to save me money going forward. And your point about customizing flies is my favourite part of it!

No way you save money!!! Well, at least I won’t. So much money in my tying setup. It can be pretty addictive and enjoyable. I think of it as an add on to fly fishing like you mentioned. I’ll likely never use all the the flys I have, but it is really enjoyable for some. Love what you do and who you are. Would love to fish with you some day. Thanks!!

Very well said Alvin. I have been tying for years, not going to admit to how long though. Not a very good tier but adequate. I look at it as time spent preparing for a trip or a fishing day. Definitely not saving money when you look at the cost of each material individually but you can tweak each pattern or use different materials to make a fly work to your liking.

Should have added; there r cheaper sources of material 2 cut cost i.e. thrift stores. friends n sharing material. Support ur local shop but b smart about it

Not sure if it’s too early for Q&A this week, but…
Thoughts on the game-changer or other jointed fly patterns for bass? I know you can catch bass on all kinds of flies, but do the jointed patterns produce more strikes?

Great topic. My fly tying is a bit different but close. I really thought I would like the artistic process. Turns out I tend to just tie the basics. The "cheeseburgers" that always work and buy the rest. I do enjoy trying a new pattern just to see if I can get a fish to take. My favorite thing about fishing is catching fish in different ways, not how many, or how big etc... but fly tying for me is really about using the feathers and tails etc. from game animals I have hunted. I find it ties my two pastimes together. A trout on a bucktail from this year's deer or a soft hackle from an earlier partridge is very gratifying. Some look at it as a way to elevate your sport. Much like a fowler carves a decoy or an archer makes his own arrows. For me, the elevation of my sport was when I built a boat. Again love the videos!!

  • @zeroedinwithzeke4059
    @zeroedinwithzeke4059 2 роки тому +2

The zebra midges are cheaper to tie and I usually go through a lot of em. 4 dollars for hooks and 4 for tungsten beads, and then the wire and thread won’t cost over a dollar for the amount you tie on 25 super small flies. That’s under 10 bucks for what the shops want me to pay 60 something dollars for!

Tom Rosenbauer suggest that tying flys is one way to improve your fly fishing. I read this recently, “Tie flies. I don’t think anyone can be truly on top of their game until they understand how a fly is constructed and what it’s supposed to do in the water.” For considersation…
