"Nah nah nah nah. If they're together, they stay together. We're not gonna have them fighting over dumb shit. Nah." OMG. I love you for this. 😂💕 It's like the stress when we read the second book has been lessened.
I LOVE ANGSTY SLOW BURN! Ok the king of this tho is The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic ... honestly *kisses fingers* it’s SO SO slowburn (doesn’t even happen until bk3) and SO GOOD. Also I read To Kill a Kingdom recently and was pleasantly surprised by how angsty and slowburn that ship was and it was enemies to lovers too. Also The Diviners by Libba Bray has a real good angsty slowburn love triangle kinda thing too
I love AFTG I read all 3 books online a couple of weeks ago and immediately purchased them on Amazon after I was done ♥️ no lie I cried hella times 😅 I have yet to read Carry on, Simon :DDD
I LOVE angsty romance. I have no idea why but hate to love romances are my absolute favourite. Arin and Kestral, Warner and Juliette gave me so many feelings. The Winners Kiss made me feel so much pain... but in a good way... 😂
Love must hurt or I don't believe it. Give me all your tragedies, your problematics, your unrequited longings. Give me love that makes the character question what they know about the world. Give me love that is painfully transformative. Give me hate and passion. Give me loves that aren't supposed to be, that shouldn't work but they do. Just TEAR ME TO PIECES. That's the love I need in my fiction. Also, I agree with you. Video games are bomb for that kind of development. Dragon Age is my gem. I ship so many.
Slow burns are the best !! I am sick of the romances where the characters get together too easily and quickly ! The "will they won't they?" is the best part !! Thank you so much for your recomendations !! And as I've said a thousand times : READ KATE DANIELS !!! The slow burn is so goood !! It's building up for several books and you doubt because the characters are both stubborn, proud and they might have some good reasons to fight against their feelings.
omg this is so trippy, im watching slow burn vids for my creative writing class and come across one of my fav youtubers from my booktube days.... the nostalgia i am feeling with this corner bookshelf is so warm and cozy!! a great rediscovery lol
Literally my favourite type of romance! For contemporary Mariana Zapata does great sloooooow burn romance. For fantasy Maria V. Snyder Glass series has my favourite OTP ever, the angst, the hate, the love!
The couple in the dark artifices, man that’s one of the most angsty romances I’ve ever read. I think Cassie Clare’s most angsty ship yet. It was so painful but it hurt so good
Windwitch made me so happy with the particular couple you’re talking about. I can’t wait to see where they go in Bloodwitch. The waiting struggle is real.
For me, both couples in The Raven Cycle fit the quota of both angst and slow burn oh my god! The song of Achilles is literally an angst machine, if not so much the slow burn part - a gun shot wound would have been less painful! Aristotle and Dante I felt had a lot of slow burn and it may just be me being stupid but I wasn’t even sure they would get them together by the end and there were some pretty angsty parts to that, even if they are teenagers. Anne and Gilbert in the Anne series are just SLOOOOOW burn omg I love it! Again, a bit of angst but not so much as with these big fantasy epics.
If you haven't read it already, my favorite slow burn romance is in A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole (contemporary romance, self-described hot mess goes to Scotland to learn to build swords from a guy who turns out to be a duke). It's SOOOOOOO good. No miscommunication plot line. It's book 2 in the series. Book 1 is also really good, but you don't need to read it to read book 2.
The slow burn romance in Uprooted makes me make a weird noise when I think about it because I love it so much and I don't know how to appropriately communicate it with other people
I know you said you didn’t feel like there was any romance in Spinning Silver, but I loved Miryem and the Staryk king. They were enough romance for me. I also love the romance in the Winternight trilogy ❤️
When I was reading Uprooted and I got to the part when it looks like they are going to end up together, I DIED. It's just so so good!! Apart from the ones you have mentioned in the book, I can think of Captive Prince, that has a really angsty romance that I love!! Wolfsong also ticks the box for slowburn/angst...
I feel the same way about angst! I enjoy cute, adorable romances but if the angst factor is not there, the romance will never be that good (in my opinion). My fav angsty romances are: Most couples of both Cassie Clare and Sarah I mass The hating game by sally Thorne Lada and mehmed from and I dakren series ( their relationship is dysfunctional but very angsty.) Magnus and Cleo Inej and kaz.. and so much more.
I was really waiting when the Falling Kingdoms pop out. I was surprised about the romance in that one. I didn't expect it. But their chemistry is just too good for me.❤😊
the "love me with lies" trilogy by tarryn fisher. ANGSTY AF + a lot of years go by and that adds to the drama. 100% recommended. (I think you would really enjoy reading her books)
I will probably actually comment later, but i just wanted to inform u that i completely shattered my sleep cycle to watch this video. it's 2am, my eyes are literally blurring, my heads spinning and i can barely hear, but im still watchin this video bc ur trope talks are so interesting and i love the way you talk about things. fuck dude, thank u for making the human garbage pile happy. like the grinch when he was shown happiness for the first time in 20 years. god bless u
You said "They can't be fighting in book five." and I automatically went to Falling Kingdoms... Right now, my favorite Angsty couple is Han and Raisa. Yesss to all of it.
I've been watching your videos for years, Sam, as I've been gaining my footing as a writer. And I still say that your content is indispensable for writers, aspiring and seasoned.
If you havent read it yet, you may be interested in starting the mirror visitor series. The first book has been translated from French and the second book comes out in english in may. They dont get together at all in the first book and the romance is a subplot and not even something i would say is romance but rather you can kind of see that it may end up that way. It's a 4 books series so if the author is going in the direction I think, then this is for sure a slow burn.
A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas, and I'm mentioning the third book in the series because if you've read it you know which two I'm talking about. THE ANGST AND THE TEARS, MAN. I'm reading so many fanfiction of this couple because I love them SO MUCH... I wasn't expecting this to happen but I'm so happy. Totally worth the pain. ALSO, another trope I love is when one of the characters (SPECIALLY if it's a girl) is super cold and doesn't want to fall in love but ends up developing feelings for someone and learns to love and be loved and they end together and happy and being so soft for each other that... I just CAN'T.
I read "remnant chronicles" because of your suggestion and I totally fell in love with the 1st book 😍 , 2nd book was also good specially kaden's chapeters...!! I have totally fallen in love with him💗
Omg the Winner's Curse trilogy killed me!! I stalk Marie Rutkoski on all social media and keep resisting the urge to subtly nudge her into writing again. I need her to release something soon!!
YES the couple Girl of Fire and Thorns that you are referring to is one of the most genuine and beautiful relationships I've ever read about. I love them soooo much!!!
First time I have ever come across your video and I have to say Oh my gosh I love you! You are hilarious and you speak my book language. I love your commentary on angst and slow burns..
I've been actively watching your videos for awhile and I just want to say that you seem a lot happier recently!! It's probably due to grad school being finished and having a lot less stress, but I hope that's how you're feeling and I hope you're doing well!
Well, looks like I need to add a couple series to my TBR. Out of everything you mentioned, the only series I've read is the Fire and Thorns trilogy and Smoke & Bone trilogy. Love both, but appreciated the romance more in former over the latter. And of course we want all the other media angsty goodness as well!
Any recs for slowburn gothic romance? Like, classic gothic, not dark steamy stuff. I want angsty romance in a gothic historial context and I cant find anything like that 😢
Yeah thats why I sometimes quit fanfics and book series if the angst isn't the right kind of angst for me to enjoy before their happy ending and if they are together I must see them together to the end, shows that have a couple get together too soon yes I fear they will break up just to end up together near the end of the series or book e.e, I love a good angsty to fluff slow burn o.o
My all time favourite angsty romance in both the book AND the t.v. mini-series adaptation is Father Ralph/Meggie in THE THORN BIRDS by Colleen McCullough. Classic, epic and heartwrenching. Checks all your boxes too! :)
i like miscommunication when it's two characters coming from different perspectives and failing to properly voice their thoughts, so each leaves with a completely wrong understanding of the other's views (which later get revealed and it's an "...oh. OH" moment). or, when one of them is keeping a secret and refusing to talk about it (kinda odd example choice but like.. in the lion king, when adult simba and nala fight over whether he should return to pride rock is actually a really good example; they fight because simba cannot admit to her he 'killed' mufasa). but if it's just two people refusing to talk... meh. anyway i don't care for tv shows but i would LOVE a video games version of this!!
I know you never finished the captive prince trilogy and were like neutral about it but oh man did that slow burn romance in that kill me and hurt me so bad haha 💔
Love this! Angsty slow burn romances are such a win for me too. I am 2 books into The Blood of Gods and Royals series by Eleanor Herman (book 1 is Legacy of Kings) and I am just starting to get hints of a hate to love romance which I am super excited about! Who'd you ship? I love the first book, but that love triangle was the most infuriating love triangle I've ever read so I'm hesitant to read the later books (esp since I decided to look up who the protagonist got with and was disappointed in how the author ended the love triangle )

Holy freaking tabs girl!! 9:18 What is your method, like dang! No, but seriously, if you would want to share how you analyse and dissect stories, that would be amazing
So I know Percy Jackson isn't exactly a go-to book for romance but uh, there's a couple that doesn't get together until I believe 8 or 9 books into the series? And by series I mean second series. It's really, really good.
I consider Kaz and Inej very slow burn and angsty too ???? I mean, for my standards anyway, like you said, this is smtg very personal. Kestrel and Arin YES OMG! ESPECIALLY IN THE SECOND BOOK UUUUGH!!!! My other holy grail of angsty slow burn romance is Emma and Julian from The Dark Artifices and even Cassandra Clare's little missteps (especially towards the end) with them cannot make me less invested and in love with them and the subversion of gender roles that plays with them and within their characters ????? And their intimacy and banter and dynamics in battle and out of battle and their sexual tension and chemistry and angst and suffering and the forbidden love and OMG I'M JUST GUSHING RN I SHOULD STOP! But I wont, they are The Superior Childhood Friends to Lovers to Soulmates and The Only One I claim in YA (cause for some reason, YA authors really seem unable to write childhood friends to lovers properly jesus christ, it's tragic...) Anyways, I'm in love with these trope talks Sam, I can't wait for the next ones!!!!
If a romance isn't a slow burn then what's the point reading it.
Amen
comments like that make me hope: pleeease make videos... so, one favourite? please?
exactly
This is my moto for lifw
Facts
"Nah nah nah nah. If they're together, they stay together. We're not gonna have them fighting over dumb shit. Nah." OMG. I love you for this. 😂💕 It's like the stress when we read the second book has been lessened.
Pride and prejudice? Jane invented will they won’t they.
Sam's voice going high pitched when talking about her ships is an ENTIRE mood.
I LOVE ANGSTY SLOW BURN! Ok the king of this tho is The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic ... honestly *kisses fingers* it’s SO SO slowburn (doesn’t even happen until bk3) and SO GOOD. Also The Diviners by Libba Bray has a real good angsty slowburn love triangle kinda thing too
I've come to the comment section to say exactly this about Foxhole! xD
Yes! Just reread the Winner's Kiss & it was perfection ❤️
The Winner's Crime hurt me physically, the angst on that book is supreme.
honestly so true
I loved that series beautiful romance
This video is everything I needed in life.... thank you.
Love must hurt or I don't believe it. Give me all your tragedies, your problematics, your unrequited longings. Give me love that makes the character question what they know about the world. i need the "hate to love" books and talk
HOW IS SIX OF CROWS NOT ON THIS LIST?!?!
Yes! Kaz and Inej are my ultimate OTP
Slow burns are the best !! I am sick of the romances where the characters get together too easily and quickly ! The "will they won't they?" is the best part !!

A court of mist and fury man ( and beginning in acotar) that book man, that book
I love that we angst romance lovers finally have a more solidified language because YES
The couple in the dark artifices, man that’s one of the most angsty romances I’ve ever read. I think Cassie Clare’s most angsty ship yet. It was so painful but it hurt so good
anabellee55 exactly my favorite
So true .
I think we all know that Julian and Emma were going to be endgame but the question was how and when 😂😂😂
Windwitch made me so happy with the particular couple you’re talking about. I can’t wait to see where they go in Bloodwitch. The waiting struggle is real.
I feel like your the only one who knows what a real angsty slow burn is and all my qualifications match yours as well
The miscommunication in the Winners Trilogy made me so mad but in such a good way. Like I was so angry and distraught but in the BEST way!!
Yes, the night circus is such a good example!
LOVE THE WINNERS CURSE
oh boy you would love the foxhole court
I've heard
For me, both couples in The Raven Cycle fit the quota of both angst and slow burn oh my god! The song of Achilles is literally an angst machine, if not so much the slow burn part - a gun shot wound would have been less painful! I read song of achilles the other day and I cried when I saw the title
Now THAT'S an angsty story 👌
The Foxhole Court for sure, even when together it's still a slow burn relationship and it takes forever to get to that point in a good way.
If you haven't read it already, my favorite slow burn romance is in A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole (contemporary romance, self-described hot mess goes to Scotland to learn to build swords from a guy who turns out to be a duke). Yes to a HATE-TO-LOVE and tv/video game video 👍🏻👍🏻
The slow burn romance in Uprooted makes me make a weird noise when I think about it because I love it so much and I don't know how to appropriately communicate it with other people
Yess I can't wait for her to write another book
The Girl of Fire and Thorns fucked me up and I LOVED it. Also I’m ready for the angst in Bloodwitch
I know you said you didn’t feel like there was any romance in Spinning Silver, but I loved Miryem and the Staryk king. They were enough romance for me. I also love the romance in the Winternight trilogy ❤️
Sammme the romance was everything
I'd love to see a trope talk about platonic male-female relationships (or rather, the lack thereof).
Lol. You were definitely speaking my language. XD
Would you be interested in doing an updated 2021 version of this??
oooh yes
When I was reading Uprooted and I got to the part when it looks like they are going to end up together, I DIED. It's just so so good!! the "love me with lies" trilogy by tarryn fisher. ANGSTY AF + a lot of years go by and that adds to the drama. 100% recommended. (I think you would really enjoy reading her books)
Thank God i found someone who is as passionate about angsty relationships!

LOL OMFG BLESS YOU
I love your rant at the beginning. I agreed with everything and laughed. Enjoyed it so much you have a new subscriber 😂☺️
You said "They can't be fighting in book five." and I automatically went to Falling Kingdoms...
Right now, my favorite Angsty couple is Han and Raisa. Yesss to all of it.
Have you read North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell? That is great!
I haven't but I've always wanted to. Also want to watch the mini series.
@@ThoughtsOnTomes I highly recommend both, both are so beautiful and painful, also very interesting
@@ThoughtsOnTomes OMG Sam please watch the miniseries!!
For me, The Infernal Devices checked all of my slow-burn, angsty romance boxes.
I've been watching your videos for years, Sam, as I've been gaining my footing as a writer. And I still say that your content is indispensable for writers, aspiring and seasoned.

I feel like Jude and Cardan will get to an optimum angst level in The Wicked King. I'm so ready for that.
I trust your book reviews because I think we have the same taste. The Night Circus is utter literary perfection! I’m so glad I read it!
I wish I could do bookclub readings with you. Quick question. While reading the hunger games were you team Gale or Peeta?
ACOMAF?
Tv video game version yes. I have set of books that are quick reads. The Summoner Chronicled by Gail Z Martin
First time I have ever come across your video and I have to say Oh my gosh I love you! You are hilarious and you speak my book language. I love your commentary on angst and slow burns..
thank you :))
I love talking about angsty romance! I read Uprooted from your recommendation and I loved it! My favorite slow burn is definitely Kestrel and Arin ❤️
I absolutely understand the language you speak! There's just something about the feels that equal incomplete sentences!
Best intro I’ve ever heard 😍 so real ugh
I've been actively watching your videos for awhile and I just want to say that you seem a lot happier recently!! It's probably due to grad school being finished and having a lot less stress, but I hope that's how you're feeling and I hope you're doing well!
I'm all for the angst too. I've read a few on your list and plan to read quite a few of the others.
Well, looks like I need to add a couple series to my TBR. Out of everything you mentioned, the only series I've read is the Fire and Thorns trilogy and Smoke & Bone trilogy. Love both, but appreciated the romance more in former over the latter.

_"We're not gonna have them fighting over dumb shit in book five. Nnnah!"_ Hahahaha!
I finally found someone who speaks my language.
I just bumped up all of these on my TBR (aside from Night Circus since I read that already) thank you for this video!!!
Also have you read the first seven chapters of bloodwitch they are out!
no I never read excerpts
i like miscommunication when it's two characters coming from different perspectives and failing to properly voice their thoughts, so each leaves with a completely wrong understanding of the other's views (which later get revealed and it's an "...oh.
I dont k ow if youve done this yet, but i would love to see your sapphic fantasy books thus far or sapphic couples.
this video killed me , your precision is so on point , this is one of my favorite tropes ever and i'm dying for your Hate To Love Video
I know you never finished the captive prince trilogy and were like neutral about it but oh man did that slow burn romance in that kill me and hurt me so bad haha 💔
Omg I totally agree... I despise insta romance and heroines who don’t make the guy work for it or viceversa
I NEED the couple in the Witchland series to happen in Bloodwitch.
the introduction is meeee as well, and also you're amazing I'm happy I found you're channel
Oh my GOD,, I’d love to see a video game/TV version of this
Love this! Angsty slow burn romances are such a win for me too. I am 2 books into The Blood of Gods and Royals series by Eleanor Herman (book 1 is Legacy of Kings) and I am just starting to get hints of a hate to love romance which I am super excited about! I cannot confirm yet if it'll happen but I am keeping my fingers crossed!
If you like slow burn, read dimily. Also can u do a TV show slow burn list
sometimes when you talk you remind me of Patrick Warburton and it’s hilarious. like just the way your voice moves and the way you enunciate. i love it. anyway i for some reason thought you’d find this funny because i find it funny, huge fan btw
This was helpful...trying to write a fantasy romance...
The Splintered trilogy by A.G Howard. It’s an Alice and Wonderland retailing but with a dark twist to it. It’s about Alice’s granddaughter who has to go back to wonderland and fix all the mistakes Alice made. Throughout the series I was soooo close to googling if my ship got together
Who'd you ship? I love the first book, but that love triangle was the most infuriating love triangle I've ever read so I'm hesitant to read the later books (esp since I decided to look up who the protagonist got with and was disappointed in how the author ended the love triangle )
MY FAVOURITE TROPE! great video as always!
I just read Skyward and it has a good angsty romance that doesn’t take over the plot. It did have one of my least fav things (making up fake swear words) but I could overlook it because the story was great
I laughed so hard from beginning to end! Seeing you so excited for this trope made my day! I love watching your videos for two reasons, your book taste, but specially when you share your thoughts, so much passion!!! Now I need to go and pick up an angsty read!! Hehehe
I feel the ravenboys books would also fit on angsty romance. I read it on your recommendation and now i am rewatching this hungry for more
Try the Kate Daniel Series by ilona andrews & End of days series by susan ee both slow burns & angsty , what level you can decide
I’m all for the slow burn angst!!
Holy freaking tabs girl!! 9:18 What is your method, like dang! No, but seriously, if you would want to share how you analyse and dissect stories, that would be amazing
Read the night circus. LOVE IT! Literally all others on my TBR. Own truthwitch and uprooted. So excited!
Am I bad for enjoying the miscommunication plotline? It just feels relatable to me.
The Savage Lands series fucking DID IT for me
um, *DAMEN AND LAURENT???*
So I know Percy Jackson isn't exactly a go-to book for romance but uh, there's a couple that doesn't get together until I believe 8 or 9 books into the series? And by series I mean second series. It's really, really good.
Jim and Pam😩
Yasssss angst queen is back with recs!!
I found my soul sister.... I knew it. You will be my only book recommending fairy..... Love you so much.....
Loved this video!!! Exactly what I needed at the end of a long day.
Give me the angst/slow burn!!!
I was so worried I was waiting thinking "oh no where is truthwitch on this list."
But I'm ok now!
Can i just say you're like absolutely sayin' what i always want.. you're sooo great girl
Anyways, I'm in love with these trope talks Sam, I can't wait for the next ones!!!!
I’m in love with your voice.
Thank you :))))
