      Hi and thank you for the compliment! 😊
      The sad reality is that I sold the machine a while back. I did not use it enough to warrant keeping it. The machine does have a lot of holes for oiling. Somewhere either in a comment or another video about the machine, I had posted a link to the manual. It might have been online at manual library.

    Thank you thank you so very much for posting this machine how to. I've never seen such a simple machine that operates in a completely rotary fashion. It's laying down consistent stitches. Where has this machine been all my life! Now to get started on reupholstering my boat!!

    Loved your video on the Singer 400w21. I have been sewing on one of these machines for years. These are great old machines and make a beautiful stitch, as I am sure you have learned by now. -- Thanks for sharing the threading video, it's great - although I have learned to thread my machine much differently to save time and make changing threads go much faster (and much easier) - I will see if I can make a video reply soon, to show an alternate way of threading.
    Thanks again for the video and I hope that you are enjoying sewing on the 400w21.

      Thank you so much for your kind comments, and by all means, please post a video if you have shortcuts! :) I am still learning this machine, but thought I would try to help others who might have been struggling as much as I was at first. It has now become my 'go to' machine, because I always seem to either be repairing something heavy duty for friends, or coming up with projects that require a heavy needle and heavyweight thread. She's such a beauty!!

    I just got the 400w1 and ur video helped me alot to thread, however i am missing two things. I wanted to know if you could help me with the names. One is the rode that ur thread sits on with the hooks. The second is a peice on the side of the machine it almost looks like another bobber thread cover . it would be on the side of where u stuck the thread through the hole and down the slot. I would appriciate any help!

      I’m glad that the video helped you out at least somewhat, but it’s difficult for me to answer any questions because I ended up selling the machine, so I can’t even look at it to help you any further. I was going to take down my videos, but I realized they still help people.
      Best of luck with it…it’s a great machine! I do hope you get the answers you need.

    Hey ! Glad you're still following comments. Maybe you can help me further. I downloaded the operation manual and learned about an oil level gauge at the center of the base. Mine is missing. I see the reservoir under when I tilt the machine. It gives me an idea of it's size. But I wouldn't want to over fill it still. Can you describe the length of the gauge, the distances of the fill marks. I used a skewer and now have put about 8mm of oil from the bottom thinking it's about right. Thanks ahead for your support.

    • @karlytr
      @karlytr  7 років тому

      Marcel, I don't have a gauge! At least I don't think so. Although I made this video, I'm far from an expert on this machine....Lol. If anyone else knows about an oil gauge, please chime in!

    • @marcelsavoie1654
      @marcelsavoie1654 7 років тому +1

      I found a diagram in the user manual showing 7 oiling holes. I did oil every one. The one located at the center of the base, (between the pressing foot and the column, a little bit towards you), is larger then the other. It leads to a reservoir under the base. Mine is a simple hole but according to the manual, is supposed to have been a gauge, probably ending by a cap or a screw (that I can't see in the manual). I was wondering, when you oil the machine how much oil you poor in the receptacle. If by now you have found a depth gauge there, a picture would be greatly appreciated. If not thank's for your video. I made some beautiful stitches in very resistant material I couldn't have done on my wife's machine w/o running the risk of being killed !😉😅

      Marcel Savoie
      Hi Mercel,
      That larger hole in the center of your machine is where the reservoir is at.
      It should have a cap/plug covering the hole.
      That is your gauge to measure how much oil you have in the reservoir.
      Take a flat head screw driver and lift it up out of the hole.
      It will have two lines to indicate how much oil you have.
      If you oil is below the bottom you need oil and you should never let it get below the bottom line.
      Wipe the gauge off and fill the reservoir a little at a time and put the gauge back in to check the level of oil.
      Keep doing this until it is at the top/second line. Do not overfill it above the second line.
      I hope this helps and if you need pictures send me your email and I'll send you pictures.
      Because I don't know how to attach them to this reply, but if you know how to do pics to the reply tell me and I'll attach them here.

      Hi. I have a similar machine with a hole in the bed leading to a well/reservoir like you describe. It has the gauge in place; I can try to get an image to you. I don't have a manual and wasn't sure whether it should have oil or grease in the reservoir (as there is no 'gasket' in place which, I guess, would be necessary to prevent leakage through the six screw holes?)
      Howie
      PS. I have no idea of how to include an image !!!?

      Are the discs too tight? Not sure if they can be adjusted to be looser. Maybe the tension, in general, needs to be slightly loosened. Also, what kind of thread are you using?

    loved your video. I wondered if there were anymore of these around. Mine has the labels still on it. the brass/blue oval emblem on the bottom says 1851*1951. I have had mine home since 1990, ran it in my sewing plant from 1987 and still runs like a charm. you can get different feet for it. I have a walking foot I use for leather.

    Hello! I'm looking to purchase this machine from someone local but I can't seem to tell what the arm length and the height of the work space. Can you please tell me what it is and would this machine be good to make quilts with? I have the hardest time with a huge quilt (top, double batting, and bottom piece) getting in the right workspace of most sewing machines. Thank you in advance for the answer and your time. Best regards. 🙏

    • @karlytr
      @karlytr  4 роки тому

      Hi... I just measured the work space and it measures 8 1/4" from the needle center to the column on the right, and 6" from the bed to the underside of the arm. It is a straight stitch machine only. I paid $100 for mine, and they aren't worth much more than that- but I do love it a great deal!! Hope this helps!

  • @karlytr
    @karlytr  9 років тому

    Adam,
    You're very welcome! I'm glad the video actually helped someone! :)
    The reasons why your bobbin is not coming up could be many. The bobbin timing (I think that's what it's called) may be off. There are quite a few articles and videos on that. You might want to try winding a different bobbin (and make sure your bobbin is wound the right way), and try a different bobbin case. Be sure that your needle is threaded correctly (from left to right), and that, as I said in the video, turn the wheel away from you when pulling up the bobbin thread.
    How long ago did you get the machine, and in what kind of condition is it in? Good luck and please keep me posted!

    I purchased one of these Singer 400w21 leather machines several years ago but have had very bad luck finding needles that will work - any suggestions?

    • @karlytr
      @karlytr  6 років тому

      Cindi Jacobson To my knowledge, this is not a leather machine because it does not have a walking foot. It is just a straight stitch machine. I bought the needles online, and I honestly don’t even remember where because it was a few years ago. I did buy an assorted pack of Organ brand needles in a whole bunch of sizes. Organ is a common brand of sewing needles so they’re nothing out of the ordinary, and pretty easy to find. Here are the sizes that I got: First, the needle type that the machine takes is: DA x 1, 88x1, 1128. The different sizes that I got as far as the thickness of the needles are: 80/12, 90/14, 100/16, 110/18 and 125/20. Hope this helps!!

    What type of needle do you use ?

    • @karlytr
      @karlytr  9 років тому

      Omar, the needle that I already had on the machine during this particular video was as follows:
      Organ brand needle, DA X 1, 88x1, 1128 - size 125/20
      This size has a larger eye and shaft to accommodate a thicker thread, which I needed for going through multiple layers of denim. I bought a multi-pack of 5 packs of Organ needles (the right size for this vintage industrial), each containing 10 needles in size 80/12. 90/14, 100/16,110/18, and 125/20. I think I bought them from a seller on eBay for a very good price.
