Dang, I feel for you, but thanks for being honest and open about your mistakes, I'm sure it'll help someone in the future when post-covid travel bounces back, that despite the loosening restrictions we need to still be quite vigilant. Take care man
I really appreciate everyone's kind words of support. This sucks but it's a valuable lesson and a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things. 🙏🏼 In the meantime, I'm bringing back our weekly livestream series! Tune in to hang out and chat about travel (or laugh at my misfortune) on Sunday, June 13, 7pm Eastern / 4pm Pacific: ua-cam.com/video/52AZ5c79QV8/v-deo.html
Thank you for sharing; I appreciate the honesty: the ups and downs of life > your honesty and sense of responsibility is admirable: see you in Vancouver
Thank you for sharing this story, Ricky. It takes courage to publicly put yourself out like this. It also provides a great self reflection and a learning lesson to others of us avid global travelers.
Thank you for sharing this incident. Now we all know how careful we should be making travel plan. I look forward to the time I can start my travel again mainly going to shanghai and Hong Kong like you did. Thank you being so sincere and honest sharing. What an experience!! You are a great young man!!!
Thanks for sharing this lesson learned! Can't imagine how you must've felt at that moment, but looking on the bright side, at least your sharing can help prevent others from making the same mistake!
Do you know what would have happened if you couldn't get a room? Because I had heard stories that people straight up couldn't find a room at all even with days or a week advance noticed.
Thanks for sharing Ricky ... and your honesty in owning the mistake. Too little sleep often contributes to mental lapses and accidents that seem hard to believe afterwards. And too little sleep is a hazard of international travel. Rest up, stay sane and be well 😊!
man i feel for you, but the silver lining is you’ll never make this mistake again. also, you were smiling in this video but i can tell you were dead inside LOL
I'm only half way through the video, but may I just say, I love the storytelling in it so far. The anticipation of what is going to happen next is riveting! Thank you for making the mistakes so we can all learn from them Ricky!
AHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHH I'm so sorry!!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing though! It is kind of tricky that you need 2 QR codes not just 1.
Hi, Ricky. Thank you for sharing your experience. I think you have the right attitude in approaching the next 10 to 12 days as a time to catch up on sleep and rest up. As of today, I am on Day 14 of my 21-day quarantine in Singapore. And so far, I am enjoying the peaceful respite. I was told by many that the last 7 days of the quarantine will be the hardest, but I plan to make the last 7 days the best. :) So, wind down, rest up, and work out, and be like a Kung Fu master who periodically goes into isolation to power up, and come out a better version of ourselves. Take care, and fighting!
Your shame at these mistakes was clear, but there was also an honesty about it that made the video compelling. Unfortunate story, but great video. I admired you being so candid. Also, those hospital names were ridiculously similar, and only one was approved? That's some crap. The way you told the story, I felt like I could imagine how you felt getting that pink barcode from HK. Again, sorry for your 14-day "sentence" but great video.
Thank you for sharing this slice of pandemic travel reality, Ricky. That moment in no-man's land must have hit like a sledgehammer... :'( For those of us who vicariously live our travel lives through your fantastic videos, this is truly a lesson to take to heart. Don't know if my upcoming trip to Japan and Singapore in November will actually come off, but thanks to you sharing this tough experience, I will be super mindful of getting enough sleep and of all the rules. That reminds me that once I was responsible for planning a 2-day trip for my team from Aberdeen to Glasgow and misread the train schedules so badly that we ended up with a 2-hour stay in Glasgow before we had to go back. Probably lack of sleep there too :/ Cheers and keep the positive vibes!
I think everyone who watched this let out a huge ARRRGH!! in sympathy. However, seeing you smile throughout the video gave a clear signal that you will get through this and be just fine. This could be a chapter in a book you could write, "My Life in the Air".
Ouch. I beat myself up over these kinds of mistakes even when there are no consequences. I call them “negligence in the air” because they are mistakes that don’t cause damage. I can see how having a permanent resident card and being familiar with this border crossing could lull you into a false sense of security. I’ve been in that No Man’s Land without the right currency and dox to make my next step go easily and I’ve had to take some fast steps to proceed. I was definitely able to see the train wreck occurring as your video played. I hope something unexpected and good comes from this stay in Shatin. And thanks for sharing.
Yet quite possibly for many people there will be consequences, the 1st being 14 nights of hotel expense they weren't expecting, others may lose 2 weeks of work and that could jeopardise their employment.
@@geo.t.t1055 You are correct. There are consequences in this case and there likely would be for anyone in this situation. I was empathising with Ricky for taking it so hard. Even if I was able to fix this problem quickly and cheaply I’d be quite angry with myself for not slavishly following these rules. It’s different when the authorities have discretion and you can reason with them. In this case a set of minor missteps coupled with being neither in China nor Hong Kong meant there was no way back or forward - without consequences.
Hi, thanks for sharing, gives some very useful more (important) points to consider. Where can I find this qualified hospitals list? Do I understand this right, if I quarantine 2 weeks in Hongkong and then go to the right hospital in Hongkong (different hospital list for mainland?), I might be able to skip another 2 week quarantine on the Shenzhen/mainland side as a foreigner as well? I am aware on the additional week home quarantine. Hope you could use the time well. Thanks.
Good for you in taking responsibility for your own mistake(s). Not many people would do that. You are the exception to the rule. Hang in there. We still are your fans
God you poor thing! On the plus side - I so feel for you but it was the best laugh I've had in months! And makes me feel so much better about my previous points mistakes ;)))
I know exactly what you did and how. I have had similar 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ moments that have cost me as well. (Biggest was not reading my exit visa from Russia closely enough and misjudging my return to Trans Siberian journey from the Trans Manchurian I had taken.... needless to say I had less than a day to plan my exit from Vladivostok to Japan at a reasonable price... I made it!). I can’t watch the livestream tonight sadly, hopefully you can do a few during the week to pass the time. I would certainly tune in from Ontario. Relax and enjoy the less frenetic time. Your head is definitely in the right place.
Don't be too hard on yourself. I am a very frequent business travel that practically live in planes and hotels before the pandemic. The rules around COVID and related travel/entry/exit procedures are dizzying, with the constant never-ending changes. I tried and couldn't figure out enough of it to de-risk my trips, or to put a procedure/check-list together, so I am staying put in the US. This is one of the reasons lead me to believe business travel, especially international, will not become normal again for at least a couple of years to come. I used to fly to Asia for work and hop one country to another with little worry, as if I was traveling to another state in the US, but no, that is not going to be happen for a long time. Plus, I can't think of any business that can afford to put their employees to frequent 14 or 21-day quarantines.
Oh well, life goes on. I feel your pain. I traveled enough myself, but doesn't matter how much you plan something can go wrong. I actually almost barded a wrong plain once (actually was in the bus from the terminal to tarmac), also ended up in the wrong hotel too.
Ricky. Your honesty and story telling in this video is great! And don’t worry we’ve all made silly mistakes. Also that you’re not trying to blame silly regulations etc. I once was traveling back with my Canadian daughter and they wouldn’t let me on the plane for ages due to not having a birth certificate with me. She wasn’t flying on a Canadian passport though she was born there. Since eTAs are required for non Canadians but not Canadians they didn’t know what to do. In the end after many phone calls they let us in the plane. The other mistake involved an expired passport on my honeymoon but I’ll leave that fir another day. That had a happy ending but it’s a crazy story.
Do you happen to know what the rules are currently for an American traveling to HK. I'm not vaxed and won't be doing that. Is it just necessary for a neg test, submit to HK govt site and obtain green QR code for phone to prove neg serum test when I leave 🇺🇸?
An excursion to Hong Kong turned into a quarantine that was originally not necessary. I feel for you man, 14 days can seem like an eternity if you’re counting the days.
I am sorry to hear what had happened on you. And don't mad at yourself too much. Even the smartest person in world can make this mistake, and sometime we got brain fart and it's like a fate which led you to make such mistake. That's life xp. I am a Canadian and I also got a HK ID card. For some reason, I need to travel to HK soon. Now they ban the flight from Canada to HK. I wonder should I fly to a China city near Hong Kong, and stay there for 14 days, and can avoid the 14 days hotel quarantine time. How quick can I get a VISA fly to China ? Welcome for any advice. Thanks
Ricky you inspired me on how to take my travelling experience to another level, and I admire you taking this very bad experience and sharing it with your followers. This is a embarrassing experience, but nevertheless a valuable lesson for everyone to learn from. Be strong my friend. Keep up the great work in enlightening the world with your wealth of knowledge and experiences. Cheers!
Wow that sucks, and yeah I remember walking through that "no man's land" many times when I used to hang out with friends on both sides (hk & sz/gz). Too late but hopefully you get some productive stuff done in the 14 days and you can extend your trip a bit. Still jealous you got to China though, I'm still looking for chinese jobs that will give me a PU letter, not even bothering with salary questions, can you give me the letter, yes? let's keep interviewng lol
Oh man good luck with the PU letter. The good news is vaccination rates are rising very quickly so I think there's hope of reopening to foreigners by the Winter Olympics.
To me it’s another great video, brave to sharing your mistake. Give us the idea of the complication of the future travel could be. I believe once we can travel again, we all could face similar situations. Thank you.
I feel your pain and commend you for your honesty. The goddess Nemesis is always waiting for us. We can get over confident too easily and pride always comes before a fall. There, I've got the clichés out of the way! My partner did just that and we nearly missed our flight once. After that I insisted we scheduled to be at the airport at least an hour before we needed to. Since my partner died I still keep to the regime of being at the airport ahead of time, but even more so. I've probably seen the inside of too many lounges for far too long, but at least I'm airside. I still cannot get used to the silly name Bonvoy. I wonder how much they paid somebody to come up with such a dreadful name! Safe travels, and keep an eagle eye open for detail in future.
this is stupid, I had to deal with something similar when canada changed some rules, my question is what if someone didn't have the money to deal with this kind of stuff?
I find it odd that people stay in hotels, or are quarantined in hotel rooms with BUILT IN CEILING AIR CONDITIONERS, as is shown right behind you... where that air is shared and recirculated with perhaps 500 other rooms in the hotel. Yes, they say there are filters, but that's not as good as a hotel where each room had their own separate air conditioner, usually it's below the window, and it goes directly outside.... those are NOT recirculated air with other rooms in the hotel. Hotels like Motel 6, and Hampton Inn by Hilton, generally have these safer window air conditioners. These border rules are overly complex. What happened to you could easily happen to anyone. Your only mistake is some perceived entitlement to an upgrade, but in a quarantine situation, I think the rewards programs really don't apply.
Thanks for sharing! Every country has their own requirements and it's a fluid situation. Its so hard to keep track. Don't feel bad my friend. Feces occurs! You'll laugh about it in 5 years!
So the extra costs is only $500ish? Since by paying 2500cad in HK, can avoid the 3 days quarantine in canada which he said might costs almost 2000cad. I rather stay in HK for 14 nights then 3 nights in canada lol. At least can get 14 qualifying nights right?
"...paying attention to every single detail..." You are so right. By the sound of it you are like me, so aware of watching the detail, and yet, we can (and I have) slipped up, (in hindsight) with silly errors. I live in Thailand, and have done their multitudinous and repetitive paperwork for ordinary things, and yet, I too have "screwed up". About to embark on our first trip to HK for 3 years in January with 21 days Q. Yikes! Cathay already screwed that up, by "re-scheduling" dates of departure, so I thought all was lost, as there were no alternative Q hotel bookings, but I have found and re-booked on Emirates instead. Tip: don't use Cathay during this period, as they are massively impacted by the HKSARG Q policy. That apart, you are a joy to listen to! So articulate. Thank you.
The Hong Kong Department of Health people did say that many others had made the exact same mistake that I did. Makes you wonder if they might've possibly allowed tests from other Women & Children's Hospitals, but no...
@@PrinceofTravel In that case you might think that they would do something to clarify which of the hospitals is accepted. This is inconveniencing many people who are not expecting to be quarantined. In your 1st situation you knew you were being quarantined on your arrival to Shanghai and so you were ready for it. I imagine that many people will be severely affected without preparation, which could hurt some more than others, financially as well as employment etc.
Some people have to do a 21 day quarantine and people are saying prisoners have more rights than this. I think this should be investigated. Even if the virus is so bad I don't think I can handle so many quarantine
Ricky, I'm sorry about the unexpected setback. We actually stayed at the same hotel 2 years ago. It's not a bad points Marriott hotel for Hong Kong, but far away from the center. The top floor has a small lounge with a really nice view when you can leave the room! There are some pretty cool restaurant around to check out too when the quarantine is over. We love your blog and reviews, keep up the amazing work!!!
Should be more convenient in the future with the Sha Tin to Central Link coming soon. I think I'll be eager to get outta here as soon as possible on Day 14, but if I do stick around for a bit, I'll check out the pool and lounge 😂
Oh! I feel so badly for you however, when we are tired, excited, distracted (which is easy to be when we travel), it is easy to make a mistake. I hope you NEVER have to be in this situation again. Barbara
Is it that strict ? I mean, in Europe you need to quarantine too but no one really enforces it. Like, you fill out a form and go do whatever you want… Is it that much harder in Asia to just not do it ?
I have been printing out and perusing each and every term and condition of the rules issued by the HK govt. - like i am sitting for a final I can't afford to fail. You were lucky enough to get hotel rooms booked in the middle of nowhere; otherwise, you could been declined to enter HK at which point you could not return to mainland - the only option was to board a flight to Canada the entery into which would have been impossible without another pre-flight PCR test which was not available in between HK and mainland...
I’d always be able to enter Hong Kong since my last resort would be to go to one of the quarantine camps. I also wouldn’t have been able to fly to Canada since doing so would require entering Hong Kong and doing quarantine (I would’ve done that if I could!)
It is similar if North York General Hospital put Toronto in front since North York is a district of Toronto. Luckily they didn't or it will confuse people a lot.
oh no. There is a saying that "An expert rarely makes mistakes, but when they do, the one mistake costs a million" i.e. it is very costly. Don't beat yourself up. Also FYI Canada announced they are removing the 3 day hotel quarantine for citizens and permanent residents. Good luck
Feel sorry for a simple overlook or two which we all could do from time to time, and thanks for staying positive and for being polite to both sides of the governments. When you are caught in no man’s land (corner), I failed to see any consideration from either China or HK authority. There was no sign of cooperation between them either. F this system!
What if you were fully vaccinated before undertaking your trip to China and HK. Would it make a difference? Or you would still have to undergo a quarantine?
Frustrating like you said, have had a few COVID travel nightmares myself over the last two years but nothing like yours. Unfortunately, when it comes to COVID unless you've got friends in high places there's no cutting corners.
Hey Cheer up, my guy, you said so yourself, learn from your mistakes and definitely do get good some sleep in, and hope you remain sane. Feels a little wierd seeing yiu a little less enthusiastic but I guess I should expect that as we are humans and issues like this can come out of the blue because of out little silly mistakes Keep your heads up, Pri- ah sorry, I mean King 🤴
Thanks for your kind words of support. I'm in good spirits and will be outta here in no time. Yeah it's a bit of a different video to usual, but hey, like I mentioned travel is about a wider range of experiences, both positive and negative, and I'll always try to keep things real and show the good and the bad. 🙏🏼
You have to quarantine for the full 14 days, even if you want to leave the country before then? Most countries it's quarantine for x days or until you leave the country.
Correct. Would I be allowed to leave Hong Kong earlier so that I can return to my home country? No. The Government has to emphasise that self-discipline and community solidarity in fighting against the disease are of utmost importance. Any person concerned who leaves the dwelling place without permission may commit a criminal offence. The penalty upon conviction is imprisonment and a fine. The Government will ensure the persons under compulsory quarantine stay at the premises by spot checks, telephone calls and via monitoring of the status of electronic device, etc. www.coronavirus.gov.hk/eng/inbound-travel-faq.html#FAQ34

Anyway just share you tghts as and when. Take note thay u have plenty of fans that love u follow u🤗 Enjoy the euro game now n rest well😘
Just curious, what happend if someone got wrong hospital like you and have no money to stay at expensive hotel like yours?, where would the HK government put those unfortunate tourist .?
They would put them in quarantine camps. These are shared rooms of 8-10 people where people quarantine and are available for cheaper, around 200 HKD per night. I don’t really understand it either.
Ricky man! Talk about Prince of Quarantine. Yeah chin up! Canada is starting to open up so summer will be great. Thanks for sharing the details of how one word in a hospital name changes things. So how's the 100 push ups and sit up challenge going ? Eh eh. I have been struggling to get over 30-40 a day in .. but I did do it that one time when I challenged you :) Maybe you'll have more time to get them in .. 🤭 I'm just kidding there :)
Looking forward to summer back in Canada. It's looking like I'll be doing home quarantine on Canada Day now, which sucks, but at least I'll be able to enjoy the warm weather and a beer on my balcony. 🙌🏼 And yes -- back to the prison-style workouts 😤😂
can I ask where you gonna cross the border from the US? (Toronto or Montreal) I'm leaving Australia soon to go back to Canada and I might do it as well.

Keep your head up mate... 2 weeks will fly by in a flash.
Cheers Wane. And hey - is it coming home? 😉🏴
An excursion to Hong Kong turned into a quarantine that was originally not necessary. I feel for you man, 14 days can seem like an eternity if you’re counting the days.
I feel very sorry to hear your worse experience. Nobody no mistake.
@@PrinceofTravel fingers crossed
Take rest
Your only mistake is some perceived entitlement to an upgrade, but in a quarantine situation, I think the rewards programs really don't apply.
is the 14days stay in CY can be count to qualify elite nights and you can collect points as well?
Yes! 😃
Thanks for sharing! Every country has their own requirements and it's a fluid situation. Its so hard to keep track. Don't feel bad my friend. Feces occurs! You'll laugh about it in 5 years!
Feces occurs indeed. 💩
Thank you.
Oh no! It is refreshing to know that experts also make mistakes though, not just us newbies! lol Feel for you Ricky, hope it goes by quickly!
This won’t be my last mistake, though I hope nothing gets more costly than this in the future 😤
Everyone makes mistakes, forgive yourself and move on, and view it as a learning experience, things happen for a reason. Thanks for sharing
I can imagine there will be a lot more people making similar 'mistakes' as the situation is changing so fast and you will never know
The Hong Kong Department of Health people did say that many others had made the exact same mistake that I did.
Ah yes, Hong Kong isn't messing around. Here are a few examples: www.lexology.com/library/detail.aspx?g=206efc27-cd57-4d1c-a187-f1eaa1f31f50
Sorry to hear about the ordeal you went through. Anyway, could you kindly tell me how much was the Covid test in Shenzhen ?
Tough Cookie..... Bear up and try to make the most out of it... Good luck! Cheers from Germany, Axel 🙏
That’s the plan 👍🏼 And good luck in the Group of Death 🇩🇪😉
@@PrinceofTravel Thank you 😅! Hope we will rock it! Take care, always happy landings and save travels!
Good learning experience. Live and Learn and move on. Life is too short to dwell on these missteps.
Exactly my thoughts Afzal, appreciate your support 🙏🏼
Hopefully you get some points for staying there as well. What a painful mistake. I feel your pain.
A solid 35,000 points for my troubles
Thank you for sharing. Two bad mistakes in a row... Rest up...
Good luck
not everyone has such experince as you,it‘s a fortune for your life。thans for your share,be happy!
Thanks for the encouragement 🙏🏼
Poor you---stop beating yourself up over it though because you are am amazing source of travel tips. I appreciate your honesty.
Time for 14 more videos! 😂 😭
听到你的错误我很抱歉,但我想提醒你,你必须慢下来!
使用这种经验来成长和发展性格。 你在学习,我为你感到骄傲。
Feel sorry for a simple overlook or two which we all could do from time to time, and thanks for staying positive and for being polite to both sides of the governments. When you are caught in no man’s land (corner), I failed to see any consideration from either China or HK authority. There was no sign of cooperation between them either. F this system!
I felt the same way when I missed my first flight while at the airport, even after arriving hours before departure time. Hang in there man
What if you were fully vaccinated before undertaking your trip to China and HK. Would it make a difference? Or you would still have to undergo a quarantine?
Then my quarantine would be 7 days. But that would mean I had to get the Sinopharm vaccine - I'd rather get the Pfizer-BioNTech.
6:30 It was at this moment he realized.. he'd fucked up
That dreaded pink code 😩
Would they let you get a retest at the first hospital?
holly shit, so how much you end up paying for the hotels last minute?
Watching this wile also in quarantine lol
Frustrating like you said, have had a few COVID travel nightmares myself over the last two years but nothing like yours. Unfortunately, when it comes to COVID unless you've got friends in high places there's no cutting corners.
Except for the proposed Phuket sandbox starting in July travel anywhere in Eastern Asia/SE Asia is a complete mess now and better to stay away till …
Hey Cheer up, my guy, you said so yourself, learn from your mistakes and definitely do get good some sleep in, and hope you remain sane.
Feels a little wierd seeing yiu a little less enthusiastic but I guess I should expect that as we are humans and issues like this can come out of the blue because of out little silly mistakes
Keep your heads up, Pri- ah sorry, I mean King 🤴
Thanks for your kind words of support. I'm in good spirits and will be outta here in no time. Yeah it's a bit of a different video to usual, but hey, like I mentioned travel is about a wider range of experiences, both positive and negative, and I'll always try to keep things real and show the good and the bad. 🙏🏼
Are you vaxxed yet? By the time you get back to canada you should be able to get a first shot invite right away (at least here in BC)
Will get #1 here in HK when I'm out, and #2 back in Canada

@@PrinceofTravel Damn. Crazy. I do worry about the precedent that has now been set for future emergencies.
It’s 21 days now and may move up to 28 days

Just curious, what happend if someone got wrong hospital like you and have no money to stay at expensive hotel like yours?, where would the HK government put those unfortunate tourist .?
They would put them in quarantine camps. These are shared rooms of 8-10 people where people quarantine and are available for cheaper, around 200 HKD per night. I don’t really understand it either.
Oh and also - the Courtyard was one of the cheaper quarantine hotels. There's also the Mandarin Oriental for like 500 CAD / night 🤣
And yes -- back to the prison-style workouts 😤😂
can I ask where you gonna cross the border from the US? (Toronto or Montreal) I'm leaving Australia soon to go back to Canada and I might do it as well.
Seattle -> Blaine -> Peace Arch Crossing
