- www.DamageContr... is where we keep all our best material, videos, techniques and training tips.
But here, Associate Instructor Khuen Khru Brian Yamasaki of the Thai Boxing Association of the USA, demonstrates a few ways to counter the Jab. Muay Thai, Boxing and MMA options are covered.
You guys are seriously the BEST. I always learn something after watching your excellent videos. You guys deserve all the best. Love from Sweden!
Really great advice at the end. I realized I do the same thing in sparring all the time. I wanna try a new counter so I sit and wait for the opening, leaving myself vulnerable. I distract myself by thinking about one move I wanna try and miss other opportunities because of it. It's a really great insight that seems obvious, but I make that mistake all the time. Just react to what your opponent gives you.
You are a beast. I love training off your sessions. I am a novice thai fighter i train hard at my gym and when im training by myself your vids help alot.
my muay thai instructor showed me this, it works beautifully,
Yeh thats what I was taught, and if your going to "hold it back with your hand". Also tucking the chin while jabbing helps.
Best youtube channel 👍👍
Thanks, I like this a lot.

@superfoot53 Every technique has a counter. Even the ones here you didn't mention. You show me a technique that is impossible to counter and that's the only technique I'll ever use. Why waste my time with the ones that might get me busted. In addition, the spinning back kick is a relatively difficult technique to use well. And when you consistenly use a variety of jab counters, it's difficult for your opponent to figure out when you're going to step off for the split.
@bozomcbozo Thank you for the support. You don't need to be in Salt Lake. There are a number of most excellent instructors in your neck of the woods. I have travelled to study under the Thai Boxing Association Instructors located in your area. Khuen Khru Jeff Jones, Khuen Khru Rick Tucci and Mike Lee, Khuen Khru Joe Cargado are but a few. I learn from these wonderful instructors on a regular basis. Best of luck sir /\
Thanks buddy! No, we don't have DVD out but we will be launching a membership area where we take you from the basics up though bleeding edge techniques and tactics for MMA, Striking, Clinching, Takedowns, Submissions and Ground and Pound. Check it out at: DamageControlMMA,com
Well, we made a video, and you called it "retarded". Sounds like you know more about this stuff than we do chief. You should make the video bro. I'm sure we could all learn a lot from you and your experiences. Live long and prosper buddy.
@TakingItToTheMMAT Throw the spinning back kick when your opponent slides left instead of steps off to his right and your spinning back kick can get countered with an elbow to the back of your dome. Everything has a counter. :)
@suicyde240 Thank you very much. Help us keep the project going. Pick up one of our Damage Control TShirts or even better, a membership from our offical vlog.
watch "34 Boxing Counters To The Jab In 90 Seconds"
You guys have great videos. I have been training Thai in new jersey for some time and have really been searching for new theories and perspectives on habits and drills and I found your videos. Wish I was in Salt Lake to train with you guys. These tips and especially the "hit him back" philosophy are really great, THANKS!
Hey Bryan - you know that parry you're showing is almost exactly like fuk sau/huen sau in wing chun. BIOMECHANICS :D
This is why.i subscribe to DammageControl MMA.com its full of information and drills.Keep rocking Guy's.
Watched this again just now. Heres a useful trick that i have used with success. In the first example counter you skip the rolling parry and straight blast the right aimed directly at the jab, you'll ride that baby all the way to the button. The proviso is that you use it early against a lazy jabber. One that throws the paw out without speed and effort. You'll never face that annoying paw in your face again. Its a real respect getter. . .
Love tht counter to the jab with the knee ! awesome ..thts good advice! =] u hit me ima hit u back u dont him me ima hit u back ! awesome good stuff helps a lot!! =]
You guys are amazing! I live in winnemucca, Nevada and we don't have a gym here and I have been watching your vids and training the moves and really trying to learn Muay Thai. I recently had knee surgery on both of my knees because of shallow femurs and I have been using your vids to exercise and strengthen my knees. Wish I could train with you guys! These Tips and all your Vids are amazing thank you! I really like the "Hit Him Back" technical.
I have natural freak genetic power in my right hand I use to dent lockers and other stupid shit, but I purposely work the jab, sit, and slip. My boxing coach told me if the government only allowed you to teach one punch( or offensive move) he would have us jabbing all day
Great video man, i had never seen any of your videos until now but definitely going to be supporting them, The video itself was very detailed and helpful, thanks again.
In Tagalog, magaleng salita, good advice and very nice counters against the jab,
Great stuff, being technical I try brainstorming ways to keep guys guessing. Im smaller and tend to beat folks w/good footwork & speed. Combining the (concept of the split jab) but using an overhand left along with the (footwork concept of the) knee used here (switching in 1 beat). I have now in 1 motion moved 2 the rt on a 45 degree angle, slipped the jab (w/or w/out the parry) & countered with a heavier overhand left, this position gives me good follow ups with the right hand. Thoughts?
Brandon and Brian another great video. You guys will be the Paulson's, Bernales, Bayless and Sauer's etc...in your generation. I have trained at Pedro Sauer's gym and the Walt Bayless' gym under Griff and Ben. I know those camps don't coalesce very well in SLC, but I made it work. You guys have great techniques, and I hope to train with you soon because I live in SLC. See you soon-great work guys!
Thanks for the video. I was looking for boxing counters, came across this - although I don't think I'll try my luck at kneeing somebody in a boxing match, I thought the rest of it really useful. I'm a bit worried about some of them since I only saw the footwork for one technique (my bad, I'm obsessive about these things - need to see every movement over and over). The counters look a bit tricky, but I can do things like catching the jab and countering with my own, so hopefully I'll grow. Thanks!
One thing i don't get: your techs are obviously very good, as are the way you sexplain and show them except the position of you fist, it always looks like you have your wrist bent a bit backwards like when riding a bike. Does this have a purpouse or is it just like that when you work light- or no-contact?
regards
no offence to your advices but some of them do not look that effective....for example it would be easier to defend a left jab with your right hand and then hit back with left jab and right low kick for example....the stepping on the side looks cool but during the fight you need loads of experience to do something like that
Coach Yamasaki always looks very positive, I get a lot of good vibes from him and his friend/partner Coach Kiser...but each time he shows punches on Coach Kiser, i feel that he actually hits Kiser. Although these are light punches I really hope that he did not touch Kiser on the jaw, because it was really on the button, with no gloves.
What is wrong with a good liver kick if he jabs ...either a straight front kick or a roundhouse . Using a roundhouse and just steping to your right (right handed) and kicking straight into the liver. Seems like that would be a really great time as he is extended to kick the liver?
I'm a traditional wing chun practitioner for the past 7 years and i have to say all the stuff i've seen from u guys is the same conceptually. Goes to show that martial arts is really 1 style. Excellent stuff
When he throws a jab his head is too high, I just don't see how it's possible to hit him in the chin with a right cross-counter because his left shoulder should be protecting the side of his face.
I reallly like this guy's techniques...as far as punching techniques, this is the best I've seen so far on youtube...On a side note, he said straight right, it's technically called a right straight...
My brittle feet cant handle all that kickin' around so there is no reason for me to acknowledge mma, but I will take the side step and true counter and add it to my boxing routine. ^_^
what? what u said sorry i was too busy lookin at the girl in the back!!!
by the way crazy videos i like the way ya explain the techniques ya use and show multiple way to use it!
Your Jabs counters are good, but the split counter would work well for boxing but in MMA the stepping off would open you up for a spinning back kick. What say you?
I took the first counter in the video and worked it in training, and it works brilliantly! Thanks for the vid, i love it! Now i'm going to work the rest... can't wait!
Standard fitness... Ever tried in sparring against even armature boxer? The difference is - good boxer throughs double as two in a second, but not like 1 and 2...
The "tang" made me chuckle and brought back memories. People who have trained with Arjan Chai all pick that up. Great video, thanks for putting them up.
I saw one of your videos yesterday and I immediately subscribed. There is so much fluff on youtube,; I am glad I found some serious substance.
Thanks

bro your tutorials are amazingly phenomenal!!!!! Your freaking talented. Market it some how. I feel unstoppable after I watch your vids lol
@BrannonMcConkey Probably more useful in a real fight. Trying to a catch a jab may not work for all skill levels. I like your thinking.
THAT is good stuff. Very detailed. So much better than some vids on youtube.
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this.
Thank you malemodel4. We love Sweden! Tell your friends and be sure to check out our blog. We keep the best stuff exclusively over there.
I used to do karate as a kid.. All forms n punching air n shit. I can see why muay thai has a good reputation this is good shit
the split seems a bit dangerous, if u don't dodge properly there's nothing to stop the jab from hitting ur head? just asking
Man, I was definitely guilty of waiting for for that split jab counter every single time when I was first learning to box.
one of the most easy and well spoken lessons on self defence and fighting.
Great concepts,Great thoughts....well spoken
AWESOME VIDEOOO ! I NEED MOOREEE
first time a video in youtube could show me something new n nice about fighting
thxxxxx
Very good instructor; articulate and thorough; obviously knows the Game. yes, hot babes are a distraction..but that's OK...
Cool video. Techniques seem influenced by wing chun strategy like simultaneous attack and defense. Thanks for sharing.
Professor Trigg is a very high ranking Kali/Escrima/Arnis Instructor, however he is a Professional Boxing Coach as well as an Ajarn in Muay Thai. We hold him in the highest esteem and respect him as much as humanly possible.
please take off earings and all that stuff when training...
so for the true right cross to land, there is no other mechanic to it other than to be faster than the opponents jab?
Checking jabs is pretty similar, dont let them get there distance while interupting there rhythm. works pretty good.
You guys ROCK!!! Great coaching!!! If I lived up near SLC I'd stop by in a heart beat.... Keep up the great videos!!!
i have a hard time slipping jabs with my headgear during matches or sparring any ideas...besides new head gear lol
Excellent video, excellent coach. I'm a boxer by birth but I'm interested in getting involved with MMA now.
spinnin back heel kick ts the most deadly kick it is banned in muay thai ive seen a guy break in half !
Thank you. We really appreciate the support and are happy that you can find something of use in our videos.
is the "true straight cross" still effective if he's tight and his chin is protected on his jab?
Cool video, but why is he jabbing without tucking behind his shoulder? Even I know thats a no no!
you are by far the best coach ive found on you tube yet. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
best advice ever: he hits you, you hit him back. He doesn't hit you, you hit him back. awesome.
I'd love to see someone show how to handle a crazy guy coming at you with windmill punches.
Thank you for your kind words. Check out our official blog and join us on the forums!
Can't concentrate in dis gym, hot gals in the background !!!
Yo, nice lesson Brian! You're official!!! peace from Cali!!!
We love Argentina
You are a great teacher i learn many tips altrough i do box, Thanks you from Argentinian.
We LOVE Sweden!
but if he feints the left jab, he can give you a hook with the same left arm, right?
thanks , but i kept seeing that girl in the back, i was disconcentraded by her lol
Excellent jab counter, im going to add this to my arsenal.
Thanks from England.
I thought leonard trigg was a arnis practitioner. Must be thinking of someone else
he is not training, he is in a FUCKING TUTORIAL continue with the steez, good sir.
Very good video ! Shows a lot of efficient punch counters. Thank you very much !
Shit sorry fellas i missed number three . .
Hi Takingittothemmat: I was wondering if 2:28,if that lady is single? Thanks :)
the greatness of the true right cross at 3:25 caused a punching bag to jingle...
r these punching techniques from boxing or was it developed specifically in mma
Guys do you have to step in towrds your opponent when you execute the split?
Blev sj utsatt för en liknande kontring häromdan. Nr 2 i ordningen, slarvade och åkte på en rak höger. :p NU fattar jag vad som hände. :)
THANK YOU for your last piece of advise! Much appreciation from Singapore
my favorite is parrying and jabbing back
I love the right cross counter, cant wait to spar tmrw and practice it
lol
Thank you for the video. Were those mostly traditional Muay Thai counters? I don't have any audio capability, at the moment.
Best advice. Thank you from the Philippines.
What if its steven seagal throwing the jabs?
this guy is an excellent instructor, does he have any dvd's out.
A new subscriber, thanks for all these awesome moves and counter moves. This has become really helpful straight to the point. Thanks again

Great instruction. One of the best I've seen on UA-cam.
I liked this video a lot, it seems very useful.
