The problem with webp is that the technical advantages don't outweigh the entrenchment of png and jpeg. Not just in browser but in how my programs interact with it. Many times I've downloaded images off the internet now then rapidly gotten annoyed as one tool or another failed to represent its existence. Like jpeglarge. But apparently there are browser extensions to convert to png automatically so I'll be trying that.
Thank you for explaining this. I was very frustrated when I was told I had to reformat my pictures before I could upload them to my Etsy store for Digital Downloads. I was struggling to try and format them to SVG files but everything was turning out wrong. If you think Webp is better that PDF for digital downloads of photography, please let me know. J. Figueroa
Since both images are available to end users, depending on the browser being used, I think it would have been useful to mention compressing your alt jpg image. A browser trying to load a 16mb jpeg rather than the Webp image, won’t be a nice user experience .
You can have under sd resolution about 12sec gif for 25 mb or you can have about 2.5 - 5 min close to full hd animated webp for 25 mb. Not most typical use case but still, to give you an idea of just how stupidly big the difference is brtween gif vs webp.
I absolutely despise webp. Nobody wants it. Nobody can work with it. Chrome just tries to spread it's own stupid format which so many standard image editors like photoshop reject out of hand. And still, because we use chrome, we always have to save images as webp nowadays. -.-
Absolutely false. With the amount of images getting posted online many people do want a more modern image format instead of wasting space using formats like PNG that was released in 1996. Being able to save gigabytes of space without any loss of quality is nice, and photoshop lacking support is not a fault of webp but adobe.
People people.. this isn't just a photoshop issue, kay? Try uploading a webp file as a thumbnail here on youtube and it will specifically say that "the file is not an image". Webp is just too incompatible with most mainstream software and websites. And why I constantly have to download an incompatible format from chrome and being forced to convert it to a format that is actually usable is just beyond me.
Great video! This plugin made a NEAR-INSTANT improvement to my page loading speeds. Prior to loading this (about an hour previous), I had installed the NitroPack plugin -- only to discover slow loading speeds - due to image format - which you pointed out in a related video. No kidding, Short Pixel AI FIXED my page loading speed problem in dramatic fashion! The subject page went from a score of 94 to 100 within 10 minutes!
Is a webp a modern version of a jpg, gif, or png file? If I save one to my pc can it be viewed offline or does a webp need access to the internet to be viewed?
Great vidoe👍 Let's say I use Shortpixel AI and lossy and I have few images that looks bad, but the other looks fine. Will best practice be, to also install shortpixel image optimizer and set all the images to lossy, except the bad ones mentioned, and then set Shortpixel AI to loseless. Will that be best practice? Thanks
Hi Mads, There really is no best practice. ShortPixel Adaptive Images applies to all images on your site, you can't turn it off selectively. ShortPixel Image Optimizer can be applied to images selectively. You can choose which images you want to optimize using Image Optimizer in the media library. If you're finding that some images look bad using AI and it's a deal breaker, then you should go with the SP Image Optimizer plugin. The drawback is you don't get WebP and the images aren't scaled to the correct sizes, but at least you still get great compression. I hope that helps :) Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for watching!
@@wplearninglab Thanks for your reply. Yes I know it applies to all images, but if I first install shortpixel image optimizer and set all images to lossy, except for few images I set to loseless. Then I install shortpixel Adaptive Images and set it to loseless. Then all my images will first be compressed by Shortpixel Image Optimizer, except the ones I set to loseless and shortpixel Adaptive images will show all images as lossy (loseless in settings, but lossy in Shortpixel image optimizer) and the few images set to loseless in image optimizer will be loseless when the shortpixel adaptive images use them? Does it make sense or am I just confusing you? 😅
You're welcome John, I'm happy to help. Thanks for watching! Also, I haven't forgotten about the speed course, but summer holidays knocked me off course. It's taking longer than anticipated :(
Almost nothing supports it. When I download a web image I can only get annoyed because most times it doesn't even say it's a webp on the site where it came from. Then, In not sure if it's animated or not. Plus, since I can't use it I have to go and convert it.
I use Siteground and they have no problems with WebP. From what I know about WebP, all hosts should be able to support it. It's your visitors that may not be able to load WebP images because browser support is not yet Universal.
There are two Shortpixel plugins: Shortpixel Image Optimizer and Shortpixel Adaptive Images. Both optimize your images and use the credits from your Shortpixel account. For the Shortpixel Image Optimizer plugin you can add the API key under the plugin's settings in the WP dashboard. For the Shortpixel Adaptive Images plugin you can add your domain name to the "Associated Sites" in your Shortpixel account. I'm making a video on the pros and cons of each so you can use the right one for your needs. In most cases, the Shortpixel Adaptive Images plugin is the best because it will resize your images on the fly to be the perfect size and delivers them via their CDN. The downside is that it burns through your monthly credits faster. I hope that helps :) Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for watching!
Hi Barbara, Sounds like a plugin conflict. The first thing I would do is make sure all your plugins, your theme and your WP core files are up-to-date. Sometimes out-of-date things on your site can have all sorts of weird implications. It can even be a plugin that's not related to ShortPixel AI that's causing the problem.
Last year Ive noticed a big loss in picture quality overall. And at the same time discovered this WEBP format popping up everywhere on the net. I dont like it.
WebP does not have quality retention of PNG. The chroma resolution is always halved (4:2:0, legacy of video), and generation loss is greater than with simple formats due to all the intra-prediction and resultant smearing. With a red image, such as a sunset, fire, flowers, all the detail is in one of the chroma channels. A different image with muted or predominantly green and yellow hues would look better. If you always view the image zoomed out, then there is no point having the overhead of high resolution. There is a nice sample with red fireworks demonstrating quality loss on the FLIF webpage. Hopefully the next generation JPEG XL format, based upon FLIF, will be more flexible to allow for high quality and low encoding complexity. A fair comparison would be with JPEG. Nobody would serve a multi-megabyte PNG over the web. And then the improvement is not so impressive anymore. They should have just extended JPEG with tranparency instead of creating so many new and limited formats.
How does Webp handle colors vs traditional .jpg or .png? I can see quite a big quality reduction in color accuracy especially if you compare reds and skin tones. Put simply as photographer I find this as a downgrade.
not to mention it makes saving images off the web a nightmare if you want to send them to your friends in messenger or any chat app or upload them to any forums or as the cool kids say these days communities

False. WebP is only 4:2:0 if you use lossy compression. Use lossless and it will be full color space of original
Why webp format videos dont play on my phone after downloading from chrome
I don't know Adheena, have you tried Googling to problem including your phone OS?
@@wplearninglab my phone's current os is android 9

in September 2020, webp support was added to safari.
I belive there was some licensing issue with the codec used in webp.
Can webp use audio?
No, no audio in webp.

yes at 25% you see no difference. Now compare at 200%.
Webp doesnt support on Safari and Chrome in IOS like iphone 6/7/8

Yeah, sucks that the developers of these chat apps are too lazy to add support for file formats not released in the 90s.
