I hope everyone is doing okay (as much as possible during these times). I thought it would be a good idea to start a mini-series all about different forms of protection in Wicca (and somewhat witchcraft in general). This is the first video of this mini-series, an in-depth video on what protection even is and why we should take actions towards protection ourselves, and how to do one of the most fundamental protective techniques for any Wiccan (and many witches): Circle casting!

hi Ella, your videos are so helpful and i've been watching your channel for a while now. i just wanted to comment, I’m not sure about saying "good/positive" and "bad/negative". while I am a wiccan that doesnt perform curses, hexes, or jinxes, I acknowledge that negativity is sometimes needed - we need to destroy things that do not serve us or are barriers. positivity can also be bad, sometimes we need to take away, not add - sometimes we put too much pressure on ourselves to be creative or happy. I think maybe just calling it "curse/combative work" and "blessing/pacifist work" or something could be easier.
I respect those who choose to practice curses/hexes/jinxes and do not think they are practicing something that is bad or lower, it is just a different set of values from my culture and religion. in wicca it may be seen as a no-no, but, ultimately, this is just a different way of seeing the world. it seems a bit too judgy for us wiccans to put that lens on practices that are ancient and traditional (and often practiced by poc, which is why saying "black" magick became an issue in the first place).
I’m sorry for how lengthy this comment is and I’m not trying to rant or tell you off, I just wanted to share some thoughts since you were talking about changing the label.
Absolutely agree, it’s just very tricky to avoid being insensitive to different people. I fully agree that we need that balance, and that different people and cultures have a completely different understanding of ‘good and bad’ as these really are man made concepts - but seeing as I have a lot of younger people watching as well, I wanted to keep it relatively understandable in terms of traditional Wicca. I will most likely make a video on this topic, as there are loads of things to take into consideration as you have also mentioned in your comment :) so no worries for the lengthy comment! I actually really appreciate it ❤️
1. Cleanse yourself and cleanse your space. Get in the mood, drink tea, meditate, listen to music to calm you. Cleanse your space, vacuum the floor, dust, make sure you’re in a clean area, not messy. Shower. Sage the area.
2. Envision the beautiful white light surrounding you.
3. Have all your tools ready. Get your candles, lighter, pen, paper, herbs. Make sure you have them near you so that you don’t have to get up in the middle and break the circle so that there’s no energies leaving in or out. Leave your phone out of your room and on silent. Do this alone or with whom you choose to do it with, without any distractions.
3. Stand in the middle of your circle and face East.
Call on air “air please cleanse my circle make sure that I am protected.”
Turn and face south, call on fire “fire please cleanse my circle make sure I am protected.”
Turn and face west, call on water “ water please cleanse this circle make sure I am protected.”
Turn to north “ earth please cleanse this circle make sure I am protected “
At the end, point upwards and invite the higher self/ spirit / god/ universe to come in the circle and protect you. Your circle will then be cast.
4. Now that your circle is cast, you can go on with your spell. You can go on with your ritual or meditate, say affirmations, whatever.
5. Once your down with your ritual, you will now close the circle.
6. Closing the circle:
1) thank whoever you invited in your circle. Your higher self/ universe/ god for cleansing and protecting you in the circle.
2) clearly state that you are releasing that energy now.
3) face north, going counterclockwise, thank earth, then turn to west, thank water
Turn to south, thank fire,
Turn to East and thank air.
Thank each element as you turn for cleansing and protecting you.
4) state after “thank you I release you”
7. It’s important to know with any spiritual work, that when you invite something in to release it afterwards.
8. You can use salt, candles, seashells, herbs to draw your circle.

I strongly recommend calling the Elements to the OUTSIDE of the Circle. This is so that the Elements work as a guardians. Any other elemental power within the circle should becoming from you or any spirit you call in. Inviting raw elemental energy into Circle may not be the best idea. Just a friendly tip!
do you need to call upon all 4 of the elements? I have a lot of trouble working with air and earth, will it still work with only 1 or 2 elements?

That’s absolutely fine! As long as your phone is not a distraction, so best to keep it on silent and maybe screen down so any notifications coming in won’t be annoying to you :)

I found myself really worried about this entire protection part, and I was really worried I wouldn't know how to protect myself, that I'd attract negative energy to myself, and I was also really worried about demons and such. I've been raised Catholic, so I have believed in that all my life. And when you said Wiccans do not believe in demons per se, but rather the form of energies, I felt great peace and I was reassured that I am beginning a good path for myself. Thank you very much! I can not say that I am a baby witch as of this moment because I am learning about customs and Wicca culture before I commit myself. When I was younger, I was forced to practice Christianity of many forms and I never really learned anything during those years. I trained myself to shun religion very harshly because of the ways I was treated inside the churches, so I feel like I have to cleanse myself of that before I can move on. My parents don't think I should be looking into Wicca, so it's making it difficult. I've bought a few books that are coming to me by mail so that I can read, but for now I am forced to use the internet. If anyone has recommendations I would greatly appreciate it.

Protective circle protects the summoner but what about the other people in our house who will not even know about our ritual? Are they in danger? And how can we protect them?
you can write protective sigils everywhere, give crystals such as black onyx and tourmaline the intent to protect and place those around the house, or place salt around because that also protects

Super good! I've read a book were it says to start to cast from North instead East. Whats the difference??
On the pentacle each point of the star represents a element,so directions also represent elements. In wicca elements have very diffrent meanings from one another. Like water represents feminine energy,in this casting it wouldn't particularly matter which you start with maybe if you favorite or need one the most at the moment. It really dosen't matter spells have no 100% correct guidlines like you have to do these or else you're going to do it wrong.
I have a question, not sure if it’s been asked or if it will be answered but I have a horrible habit of forgetting tools when I cast. So my question is, if I forget something is it best to undo my circle and then renter it? Or is it only to just ask someone else to help you and bring items to you in that case. I can totally see how it can be seen as rude! I will definitely do my best to never forget items lol but it happens! Thanks for the information! You have a new sub! 💜🌙

before casting, do you have to make a circle like with salt or with flower. is there anything in the circle like a symbol?
Essentially you would envision a circle around yourself that acts like a shield to protect you. You can most definitely make a physical circle with salt or flowers or stones etc, but it’s not necessary, especially if you are already very good at imagining such a circle. I personally don’t have very vivid imagination so for bigger rituals I do like to make a salt circle or if I’m outside, a stone circle to help me envision it

Incense would likely be enough but a circle of protection is never a bad idea if you aren’t sure 😁

So a rule of thumb is: To cast go clockwise, to release go counterclockwise :) there are paths and covens that don’t start with the East, so that is quite Wicca specific, but the clockwise/counterclockwise is very universal within different practices

As cleansing is a protective practice in itself, it means you don’t need to take extra steps (unless you really want too) 😁 and thank you ❤️

Depends what you cast within the circle. Sometimes it is wise to cleanse the pebbles before they can be used again.
are there any materials i can read to start and educate me in the practice of witchcraft? I've been interested in practicing the art witchcraft since time immemorial and watching on tiktok (witchtok) re-awakened the urge to learn more about the art. i take that as a sign or my calling to becoming one. pls help a baby witch out. :)
i still don't know what kind of witchcraft i wanna practice but here's something about me: i love plants, i have the "green thumb" meaning i can make any plant grow and thrive, i talk to them on a regular basis and feel a lot better when i talk to them.
i also love the moon (esp when it's full moon). i always get excited when it's full moon. sometimes i stare at the moon and i feel like it's trying to communicate with me but i can't understand what the moon is saying sooo.
i am also kind of a psychic or maybe just have a strong intuition. sometimes i feel like when something's bad is about to happen and I get chills. i also had a dream about tornadoes and lo and behold a day after my dream, there were waterspouts in our country.
i'd like to be welcomed into a community where i can learn and help me safely practice the art of witchcraft. thank you!

Usually an athame is used (in Wicca) but if you don’t have one/can’t have one you could use a wand or honestly just your finger

I have a question. I know how to cast a circle, but is there a way to confirm that the spirits of the elements are there? Tbh I noticed that air and fire like to announce their selves by making the flame dance, especially fire. I did everything right, a candle at each direction, and offering specific to each element. So I was just wondering. Also, I’m curious about using a ouija board within a circle. So far whenever I use it in the circle I doesn’t work, why is that? The reason I used it within the circle (I cleanse everything before hand including the board) is for protection
So with the elements - as you already noticed, some elements will announce themselves. With earth and water it may be harder but I always get a little bit of a tingle when they enter the circle. I’ve heard people say they can faintly smell salt water or earthy notes. That sort of thing.
On the topic of the Ouija board, it may be because you would need to invite in the spirit you want to talk to, like you would invite the elements in. So if you are using the Ouija board with the questions like “who is there?” then it may not work, as your circle is closed. But if you go in to your Ouija session with very specific spirits in mind (ex. your grandfather) then you can invite him into your circle and then he can enter and communicate with you. At least that is what I have experienced and to be honest I am not the most experienced with Ouija Boards
Hi ella! I'm practicing to be a witch but I have adhd and permanent non stopping tinnitus. What should I do to focus?
I also have adhd and I struggle with meditation but it does tend to help! Especially guided meditations (on youtube for example). I also find that being ok with your adhd can help as I would get really upset that I couldn’t focus, but the more I just accept it and the mishaps, the better the entire situation got. No one is perfect, and if you have certain things come up then thats fine! 🤍
When doing spell work in a circle is it better to work in some sort of ritual clothing or is it better skyclad?
Why 8 min though before even starting the technical stuff all twitchy stuff have like 15 min intro like why separate them so I can learn linearly

How do you know if it worked? Im a novice, and i dont want any shadow people or evil enteties in my circle.
Do I have to cast a circle for doing things such as preparing herb baths or crystal elixirs??? I still don't feel comfortable to do more "complex" rituals...
I personally wouldn’t be casting a circle for those things, especially if you cleanse your space around you regularly anyway :) circle casting is typically more for rituals
Can you cast this circle when doing a tarot reading or is that seen as distressful to cast the circle for such small thing?

I personally wouldn’t because circle casting just takes quite a long time usually and I do a lot of readings 😅 but you still could! I would say if you cleanse your space frequently then it wouldn’t really be necessary, as circle casting is usually more used for rituals and things that involve a lot of energy 😁 and thank you ❤️❤️🙏🏼
