It's a bit like putting a boxer and a Muay Thai fighter against each other; the boxer may well land a bomb; but if the muay thai fighter cannot use kicks, knees, elbows, takedowns, etc., it is clear that the boxer will inevitably have an advantage.

So beautiful to watch! They were never trying to overcome the other just with pressure or explosive moves, just with technique. JB always looks gassed out but he is relentless untill the end, always aware of every detail and with clear plans in his mind, not taking advantage of his weight. Craig Jones has a clear cardio/speed advantage, but focuses instead on technical sparring. It would take hours to examine all the small details, wow!

@@xxFairestxx its considered dick moves cause they dont work against good guys, you cant substitute good transitions and set ups with digging your elbows into the thighs and putting your forearms in there face. These moves are not illegal in bjj or sub grappling yet you never see them cause the catch guys dont make it past the first round of the tournament.
Awesome matches to watch with them!!! I liked how Barnett used toe holds to facilitate escapes from Craig's back attacks. Loved how Craig countered one toehold attack by sliding into Saddle. Was that Ben Eddy in the background? Was he visiting or making a move?
Barnett used a Shin lock to escape Craig's back attack. Not Toehold. Also, Barnett could've finished the Toehold by cranking it, but was holding it steady to allow Craig to tap (which never happened). He was just being a good sport. Then he showed Craig how to tap, but casually tapping on the Heel Hook, even though it wasn't very secured yet.
Some people have flexible ankles/feet. I would have tapped to Josh's toe hold fairly quickly. When I get a toe hold (or other submissions) and my training partner refuses to tap, I just let go and keep going.

Now that was a quality roll right there. All the subs that they just respectfully rolled thru was awesome. Wish I’d have started this when I was a kid!
I think it went both ways, Josh only did one big guy move during the roll and was on his knees the whole time not really using the pressure passing he is known for. I still think it would be fucking scary seeing Josh pissed off.

I’ve heard a lot of negatives in the past on how josh Barnett rolls with people but he seemed sensible here, both were allowed to work in spite of different weight and styles.
@Water Gun the focus on being rough and making everything uncomfortable is the reason catch is inferior, smooth efficient transitions is much more important the higher the competition gets, its the reason most catch guys look so slow and akward when rolling against guys like craig.
@Water Gun not in any high level org. Josh barnett or sakuraba is the most accomplished catch guys in fighting, name all the catch guys winning adcc. Take the top catch guy in the world and the purple belts at most gyms will own them.
@Water Gun catch has limited high level instructor because it was inferior to bjj and submission wrestling, guys like eric paulson didnt thrive cause their fighters were getting subbed by everyone, guys like ken shamrock did ok when others didnt know any grappling but got killed by lower bjj belts.

Such a great technique diversity from Craig, really brings such a joy to watch his game. At the same time, we can see how great a difference in level of set ups & control mechanisms (no offence to Josh). Difference between establishing the control & then breaking in leg submissions is enormous

Josh was playing bjj, not his own sport, catch. He wasn't jabbing Craig in the shins or ankles to climb him, or putting his knee in his face, or doing neck cranks. Josh was just playing with the boy. The real catch leaves the air heavy. It's almost traumatic, almost like a round of boxing. It's another reality.

@Big Bad punisher def some good leg locks and entries in catch you don’t know what your talking about for the most part it’s mixed but check out csw and Erick Paulson where josh Barnett got his black belt super interesting shooo techniques from Japan. If you look up combat wrestling in Japan it’s pretty much all modern leg locks and leg lock entries used in bjj today.

Josh gasses after about a minute into each roll. But who wouldn’t…having to constantly defending Craig’s pressure. Very impressive especially considering how much weight is he’s giving up.
Watching Craig do flow rolling like this is just absolutely beautiful to watch. Its slow enough to wear you can literally see him nailing techniques step by step, but then he'll randomly hit a beautiful sweep and im just like how tf did he just do that!

What I learned watching this: Josh can attack your feet from anywhere, also that Craig has rubber feet. 😅
He was attacking from a position where he had no control of the knee. So the toe hold was inefficient and Craig was able to counter.

Watching Craig do flow rolling like this is just absolutely beautiful to watch. Its slow enough to wear you can literally see him nailing techniques step by step, but then he'll randomly hit a beautiful sweep and im just like how tf did he just do that!
