I have to say, the Rover 75 has one of the most inviting interiors I've ever seen in a car.

Had one of these for 4 years and was really sad to see it go. Stunning car inside and out, incredibly smooth and quiet with great build quality. That said you HAVE to be aware of some maintenance quirks such as plenum drains etc if you want to avoid potentially frustrating/expensive repairs

    • @Locost59

Plenum drains are an issue on all cars, certainly the Passat had issues in that department. In neither case was it a shoddy design, just people not cleaning them properly.

I bought a 2004 75 CDT six months ago. It was going to be a "spare" car because I have a two-seater and a 4x4 but the 4x4 is really for the winter and the two-seater is no use when the grandchildren are here. Since then I've done just over 10,000 miles in the Rover and all I've had to do is an oil change and two new tyres. It drives like a new car and returns better than 6.0 litre/100 kms (around 48 MPG) and most surprisingly of all, all my neighbours love it. One has asked to buy it and I've had three other offers from strangers in carparks. I was going to keep it for a year and then sell it but my local garage told me to hang on to it for a few more years yet because having checked it all out they reckon it's good for another 200,000 kms (it's done about 125,000 so far). In short a very happy experience and perhaps the best car bargain I've ever made.

I love this car , the styling and the ride are beautiful just one snag, the clutch this is my second rover the first was the petrol version with the rover engine 1.8 , on this the overheating was the problem. I now have the diesel shortly to be scrapped , Im fed up of it. had a new clutch fitted 2 months later the master cylinder failed , had a new one fitted that failed after 2 hours. this time it was the slave so now have a new metal master fitted instead of the crappy plastic one and a new slave 2 months later its failed again. I now consider it uneconomical to run. as its now cost over £1000 .

STUNNING CAR, It could and should have saved Rover but I blame its dreary old fashioned dash that appealed to pensioners and not young business execs. What a pity as the 75 was an EXCELLENT car and I still think it is one of the most beautiful cars ever.

    • @Samspianopage
      @Samspianopage 7 років тому +5

I don't think the dash was "old" fashioned.
Think about it, look at any 60's/70's British Rover or any other car and the dash was very flat and upright.
The top of the 75's dash was curved and made of wood, looked alot nicer than dare I say BMW or even Rolls.
Where I'll give you it is the center console and radio, that weird hose shoe humpy bit didn't looked quite right.
However don't foret the Mercedes-Benz S-Class had a similar old farty dash too, yet it sold extremely well.
In fact the 75 was in many ways a far more advanced car than alot of similarly priced cars, certainly in the looks dept. If it had slightly stronger V6 or V8 engines, and the choice of RWD or 4WD, that really would've gave it a leading edge.
However the Phoenix consortium never gave it the funding it needed, and the whole car was dogged by the perception of it being an old persons car, I can kinda see it but then so was the Jaguar XJ6.
Actually what really killed it was BMW boss at the time of the launch basically casting a shadow over the whole Rover brand, saying something along the lines of they weren't sure of it, and people thought they might ditch Rover, hence everybody was too frightened to buy one. I read that somewhere not sure where though.
      Cheers.

Buick sold an entire generation of cars to the retired demographic in the later 20th century. Money to be made in appealing to older buyers & new people are constantly entering the target audience as they age. I’d buy a modem car with retro looks.

What, has every young exec's car goota by all black and biz like inside and sharp nosed like BMW.
That tells me everything I need to know about the sort of people who generally drive them, not saying EVERYBODY is like that but in general.
Everybody I know that drives the hot German cars, Audi, BMW etc as good cars they are, they're all show offs, shallow folk, out to make an impression but no real substance underneath.
I suppose that's the way when business and money are involved make a good first impression just to get the money or the clients. Atleast the Rover was different and interesting.
Doesn't mean just because you've got one people aren't gonna take you seriously, a sensible person would even if it is seen an old man's car.

I just wish they could get the electrics right.. Honda.. Engineering??? It was good but really happened? Mercedes and. BMW... I love all car makers for one reason or another.. I've owned over 50 cars.. Mostly European... But I've had some American cars as boring as they were.... At least they didn't blow up... I really wish that Rover tried again in the US.. The Sterling really wasn't a bad car.. U can't find one now anywhere.. My 827 was British racing green with tan leather.. It even had power rear seats!!! What luxury!! If only it would have been reliable!! If I could find another one..
I would put up with it... My 1986 Alfa Romeo spider has been in the shop for months... But nothing.. Not one other car.. Not even a Ferrari.. Has more driving characteristics than an Alfa Romeo.. I've owned 15.. All I can say... Love the Sterling.. But if I'm putting up with 2 headaches... Hmmmm... I'd ive with my Alfa... Just my personal opinion... I've had 2 164s... All the l model A Milano.. 2.5.. 2 of them.. One the Verde.. 3 Gtv6.. God I wish I kept them!!! But now... That 75 Rover.. Is beatiful!

What killed Rover after Honda was that none of Rovers car segments by this time matched up to the competition. Nobody wants an executive car that's a bit more than a 3 series but not quite a 5 series. I mean what market sector is that aiming at? People in between a promotion? lol
Same with the 200 which used to be an Escort /Astra competitor but had become too small for a family car and too big to be a supermini.
Their sizes were all out of whack. This, combined with Rover betting on bubble shapes as the new design language when the market was heading for rakish designs was the death knell.
One wonders whether BMW deliberately messed up the sector alignment for Rover.

But a piece of junk. Badly put together, in what by then was sadly the Rover tradition, and with generally poor engineering. The stories of complete engine failure at under 75,000 km are legion, with lots of lesser bits having trouble before then. All very sad. I had an original Cyclops-eye P4 75 as my first car, it then being 17 years old. Doors opened and closed beautifully and unfailingly. Nothing but nothing fell off. The engine compartment was beautiful to look at with magnificent aluminium castings for the inlet side. Zero performance of course, but it's probably still giving someone excellent service.

Disagree totally. Many of these have done 500K miles - with the diesel engine (BMW). Some clever people have hacked the ECU and remapped to raise to 160bhp which totally transforms the car. It's a joy to drive, very reliable and comfortable - and has many novel features built in. I've owned many cars but this is the best I've ever owned and driven. Still get a kick when I drive it.
