Having spent my early years in nothing but Rovers and MGs (my dad was a salesman for them for 25 years) I personally loved the 75. Especially the tourer which we took on a holiday to the Isle of Wight. It was so comfortable and practical. It’s just a shame BMW didn’t put more effort into Rover, it would still be here if they did. They got what they were after, Mini. Absolutely loved the 75 at launch, but was too young/skint to afford one at the time.
In context, Rover weren’t alone in the “retro” styling stakes at that point - and personally, I still think that the PPD (early) 75’s (particularly the saloon models) were spot-on with the mix of contemporary/vintage aesthetics.
Fast-forward 20 years and you have a great car for not a lot of cash - yes (across the range), it’s got foibles and well-documented issues, but which marque hasn’t?
I’ve always owned classics (including P6’s) and for me, a 75 as a daily driver is a perfect mix of vintage styling and modern-ish features (and enough bits and bobs to fiddle with/stay on top-of to keep me interested/occupied).

I had the MG version, the ZT 1.8 T, one of the very last ones on an 05 plate, so the 1.8 had the uprated bits to prevent head gasket failure. Having said that, I always had one eye on the temp gauge lol because as they age, you have to beware of the coolant pipes and plastic unions can fail, the plastic goes very brittle!
The MG version has the better interior in my opinion, dechromed exterior and MG sportier looking front end, lower firmer sport suspension, a bit more power from the engine, I think 160bhp, still very economical and very cheap to insure. Very comfortable drive, roomy interior, huge boot, very good build quality and reliable, never had any issues with mine.
The MG ZR ZS and ZT range were met with great approval from the motoring press at the time of launch. There is also a V8 rear wheel drive version lurking around for the petrol heads!😎👍
Sad to see such an iconic British brand like MG basically given to the Chinese⚠️😯😕
Funny you should mention the S-Type Jag at the end and compare with the Rover 75, I had one and always thought they had a very similar look, from the halfway point back, as well but I definitely prefer the MG ZT much better drive IMHO! ⚠️👍😎😁

      IMO...
The Rover V6 is an under-developed parts-bin affair. The early ones in the 825 petrols were nothing short of a woeful disgrace and an abuse of customers. Yes, the later ones can be made to run okay, but all of them would have needed an upgraded head-gasket, and those that didn't get one as preventative maintenance would have suffered catastrophic engine failure. I knew owners that went through multiple engine rebuilds. There are always exceptions, and I'm sure by now there are people who swear (positively) by their KV6s, but personally I could never recommend one and would never buy one. IMO, the 1.8 Turbo (not much slower in the real world...yes, still has issues but generally not catastrophic) and the diesels are the best options, or maybe the V8. Obviously, YMMV, and that's okay, but I think Mr High Peak pretty much got it right, but needed to criticise the KV6 and MG Rover Group much more for their bad attitude to quality, reliability, and customers. MG Rover thoroughly deserved to go under, and I'm a Rover fan. All that said, you should of course enjoy your car and ignore everything I've said, which I'm sure you will do.
One correction though. You can't be serious if you think BMW had nothing to do with the 75. BMW was not a hands-off owner. BMW bought Rover to rape it and wreck it. When BMW bought Rover it was producing decent cars that were taking sales from BMW. BMW took an opportunity to take what was good and throw back a cash-starved remnant with under-developed products, which was bought by people who were at best in denial that such could be profitable without a massive injection of cash for new development and new plant.

    • @rare6499
      @rare6499 4 роки тому +2

Nigel W the KV6 doesn’t suffer head gasket failures at the same rate like the 4 cylinder engines. Early engines were bad but by the time they were in the 75 they were fundamentally a good engine. I’ve covered 30k miles in the past two years on mine with zero problems. BMW had a lot to do with the car obviously, but the design team were British and were essentially allowed to do what they want.

Hmm. Everyone I know who owned one (and I know quite a few) never has a bad word for them, and recall them with great fondness. In defence of the 75, I will point out that it won many awards, including the Most Beautiful Saloon Car by the Italian motoring media, and was one of the safest cars in it’s class. In comparison with an S Type (a car I love) one should remember that the 75 is a comparative thoroughbred, whereas the Jag is a Lincoln platform with a Ford or PSA engine (unless you can afford to run a V8) and has a very poor reputation for rust underneath.
Let’s not beat around the bush here, both cars are now only really appreciated by old duffers (like me) who want to float around surrounded by leather and wood while listening to Classic FM. That doesn’t make them bad cars, just niche cars.

I think by the time this car was launched, the reputation of Rover was damaged beyond redemption, thanks to the Austin-Rover era. The 75 was a genuinely nice car, but Rover sold it as a car aimed at people from the mid 30's age group upwards. But it ended up selling to middle aged retirees with delusions of grandeur. It just never cut the mustard with younger drivers. I guess it was also too retro for its own good, when all the other choices on the market were bang up to date and modern. The 75 was more of a museum piece to be admired from a distance with one foot in the past, and the other in the 21st century.
Shame really, as Rover had some exciting concepts in the pipeline. One of which went on to become the BMW 1 series, which has been a huge success for BMW, as is the Mini. Although the Mini is now a brand, not a BMW stable mate.
How different things could have been for Rover.
Now, most 75's are smoky, worn out taxis, or cheap run about family load luggers, slowly decaying on many a street up and down the land, unloved and un cared for.
Not a very dignified end for what was a premium British marque at one time. RIP Rover 🙁

I agree with nearly all of your comments. BMW asset stripped Rover, using their know-how on making front wheel drive cars. Haven't seen a mini-cab 75 in years, mostly German ones. We have one after owning an X-Type and an XJ6 (X350), the Rover 75 Classic is more of a Morris Oxford rather than a successor to the more interesting P6 or even the 820e I once owned. The build quality is not as good as the 200 I once owned, seat fabrics, switches, radio/cassette, etc. Pity really, I do like the car, but it does not have the I have arrived as you do with the Jaguars or even out other car, a 1965 Humber Super Snipe. Handling wise it is very good, and the seats are more comfortable compared to the XJ6, horses for courses.
The Rover 75 deserved a much better reputation, if VW owned Rover instead of tantrum AG, Rover might have still been around… Think SEAT (cast-off FIATs with terrible build quality) and Skoda, both now make excellent cars. BMW just had a strop, threw it's toys out of the pram because the British government was playing by the EU rules, (does not apply to the French or Italian motor industries). No, Rover should have stayed with Honda. At the end of the day, BMW was only really involved with the 75, the other cars were already about to be launched.

Typical review from someone who's never really gave rover a chance straight from the start, you mentioned head gasket, temperature guage and overheating so many times you're just running it into the ground even more, maybe focus on the fact that it was a bit of competition for jaguar even the queen had one, try taking out a 25gti, 160 zr or a 180 zs then come back, the 75 was more of a luxury BUDGET car and it done exactly that... Never had a issue with my rover 👌

Always exceptions, but it is a sad fact that Rovers from 1995 on were mechanically particularly woeful. Many issues and woeful corporate values and customer 'service'. Blamed customers for problems, etc. Ford were fixing the KV6s in its cars and acknowledging the problems while Rover blamed its customers. And much more. Rover went bust for good reasons. However, IMO, apart from the engines, the 75 isn't that bad, and the interior is better than the S-Type. Wood does look partcularly cheap and out of place though, but does hold up well enough over time. I think the dash design and the seats are classic Rover. Biggest interior disappointment for me is rear legroom. Seems as if it was initially designed to be rear driven like a 3-Series.

You said that the Germans insulted us by giving us a car like the Rover 75. I think we insulted ourselves as a nation not being able to build a decent mass produced car that remained in British ownership. One of the biggest things we have to be embarrassed about as a nation we don't own any of our car brands anymore. All in foreign ownership, we insulted ourselves, and the Rover 75 is exactly what we deserve from the Germans. I really can not believe we have no national pride anymore when it comes to the car industry. I drive Ford now because I respect the brands integrity and design. They may not be British but its the next best option. Good channel keep it up

Don't agree with all you said, but definitely agree about national pride. When the current over 50's are gone I fear there will be few who know what national pride is. Remember that the language is being re-engineered. Nationalism bad, patriotism good. Very confusing, because they are basically synonymous. Or were until Macron said otherwise. Only got to listen to the Brexit debate to know the lack of national pride. The fifth largest economy in the world apparently isn't able to stand without the EU. The EU is said to be all powerful. Without the UK, the EU is really only Germany and it's in some trouble. Problem with the UK is that it invests plenty in research but not enough in development. We are prone to selling our ideas to others to develop and profit from rather than doing so ourselves. And we seem trapped in PC land that suppresses the truth and oppresses the true as if we are living in '1984'. Difficult to see any halt let alone reversal. Even the Tories have gone Woke.

There’s plenty of national pride when it comes to the car industry still. Most are part of larger car companies but there are hardly any stand alone brands now days just due to the sheer economics of it. We have JLR, Aston Martin, Bentley, Lotus, Rolls-Royce, McLaren, Morgan etc...one heck of a list IMO!

    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w 4 роки тому

@@rare6499 Let's take them one by one.
Land Rover: One of the most unreliable brands and grossly overpriced. Base prices maybe look okay, but spec one up to have the same options that come standard on a Kia and you'll be shocked. Nonetheless, still a British icon that is still able to distinguish itself from the crowd.
Jaguar: A real mixed bag, from E-Pace crapness to the generally excellent F-Type and the innovative designs of the XJ and I-Pace. XF was mostly great until you looked at the quality of the interior. New face initially looked a bit Audi-esque, now it's just an indistinctive lazy nothing. And as of today only one slightly aspirational engine offered by JLR. Quickly going broke. I-Pace is a sales flop, despite it being a relatively good offering.
Aston Martin: Can't get their build quality up to the level of the prices. And now engines by Mercedes. Maybe the Merc engines are better, but if so, I'm going to buy a Mercedes-AMG GT, no question a better car in every single respect, except brand, for much less money. No longer properly hand-built, but still build-quality issues, and no longer any aspirational engines. Keep having to make excuses for the brand. And grossly overpriced. Now looking for a late to the party SUV to save the company. Yes, there's Valkyrie and Valhalla, but you can't justify the rest of the line-ups relative mediocrity on them. Maybe new electric offerings and the resurrection of Lagonda spell a bright future for AML but as of right now the company has IMO decided to tread water with mediocre offerings that trade on the name and history without delivering anything that is objectively worthy of the name or objectively worth choosing over the offerings of other brands.
Bentley: Bentayga looks like a black cab. Based on an Audi. VW-derived mechanicals. Body made by VW. New Conti GT and Flying Spur greatly improved but interiors reflect a Germanic idea of Britishness and are over the top. Based on a VW platform. Designed by a German. Electrical issues plagued predecessors to the point of unrepairability, so time will tell. I personally like the Conti GT and Flying Spur, but make no mistake they are German cars. And German accents rule at Bentley presentations. Bentley is more an assembler than a manufacturer or even designer. More than any other 'British' brand, Bentley is most akin to a drag artist.
Lotus: Foreign-owned of course. Still under-resourced. No Lotus engines. Other than that, I give Lotus a pass.
Rolls-Royce: Game very much upped under BMW, but tasteless and over the top. Target market is everyone with money, except British old money. At the end of the day, bespoke, high-quality BMWs. Again German accents abound at RR presentations. Bespoke work by English craftspeople and that's something to be proud of, for sure.
McLaren: Yep, something to be proud of, for sure. A remarkable and outstanding Britsh success story in a short period of time, too. Hard to see it duplicated in another automotive segment though.
Morgan: No longer a Morgan at the helm. Pushed out! New Plus Six a good car with a BMW engine that is actually good, but that BMW shifter has to go. I have a soft spot for Morgan but cannot see me ever buying one. Very much not in the mainstream, but something to be proud of.
There are of course other small makers, as you say.
Caterham: Foreign-owened but a very British product.
Still, a very short list! Miniscule when you look at how many auto companies Britain used to boast!!! And very few in British ownership.
The only mainstream makers are JLR and they are foreign-owned!
In France, PSA is French-owned and they recently bought Opel and Vauhall.
In Germany, BMW is German-owned, VW, Audi, and Porsche are German-owned, and VW Group also owns Bentley, Bugatti, Ducatti, Lamborghini, Skoda, Seat, etc, etc. In Italy, FCA is Italian owned, including Fiat, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Jeep, Maserati, etc, and Ferrari has been spun off but still Italian-owned. In the US, despite inefficiency, poor quality, poor products and the 2008 financial crisis, GM and Ford are still American-owned. Japanese auto makers are Japanese-owned, and Korean auto makers are Korean-owned.
Your mileage obviously varies from mine, but as I see it, with the exception of McLaren, which is a very new maker, the state of the British auto industry is a national disgrace!!!

A friend bought a black 2.5 v6 new in 2004 (update model) and it has served him well - still drives it to this day. It's nice to drive, but the v6 lacks low-end grunt - revs well, and sounds good for a v6. Has been reliable, only let him down once in 15 years. The 75 looks beautiful with the right wheels and the leather smells right. We rarely see any other Rovers on the road (especially not the SD1!). I don't work in the trade, but even I know that most people think of the 75 as a bit 'twee' a bit 'cliched' and even at its launch, there were some who questioned why it had to be so retro, as if Rover were trying to reinvent its past, rather than embrace the here and now.
Obviously, the budget for market research must've been pretty slim, as they expected the car to sell to a younger demographic than those who actually bought the car. And fleet buyers were not interested at all.

People happily buy new cars & overlook the amount of times they have to take them back with problems under warranty (then perhaps out of warranty). Some of us know what a great car the 75 can be, others never will, that's again the way it is.
I also have a small fleet of classic Rover's, pre-Sd1, & am very happy to run my 75 alongside them. My 26 year old stepdaughter likes the 75 too & a neighbour's teenage daughter told me it was cool a few weeks ago, which rather surprised me, so it's not an old-mans car to everyone. They're old enough now to be noticed amongst the Teutonic porridge on our roads & they were the most beautiful car in the world when they were launched according to the Italians. Some of us still think they are & that is also, just the way it is. ;-)

The quality was bad but I always liked the looks of the 75, especially the pre-facelift model. I think it's an elegant saloon car.

You have given better reviews on cars that are a lot more crap. You do not like Old Rovers. Full stop. I have owned 2' 75 's and they are far better than the rubbish you think are good. My opinion on you has now changed

Because we have different opinions? How ridiculous.

I had a 2.0 ltr diesel connoisseur, from new. It was the most luxurious car I ever had. Comfortable, reliable and good looking. Of course, now superseded by modern cars. The face-lift version did nothing for the looks, just made it look cheaper. 1.8 turbo engine was notoriously poor. Only regret I had was not buying a ZT, which I could have had instead. A nice one, in silver, still looks good today.
