as i said, him shitting about songs and missing important plot points just because he wants to talk was really distracting and it took the joy of it. he can just pause the video if he wants to talk i was like sighing uncomfortabely when he was talking about how he hates musicals when one of the most important plot points happened. he wouldnt even notice it if egg boy didnt say it and he missed 90 percent of important info. also he didnt react to the song at all he just talked while having song open, it felt like those subway surfers family guy tiktoks instead of a reaction.

Fun fact: Zestial is voiced by James Monroe Iglehart, who you've heard as Asmodeus/Ozzie in Helluva Boss, so you know he can sing when the song calls for him to put effort into it. :)
To give some more info from the songs that you might of missed: Velvette was able to work out that Carmilla killed the angel only based on her expression when the angel's head was thrown, and her immediate attempt to regain control of the meeting afterward, which shows that Velvette is actually pretty smart, and intentionally annoys people to make them slip up and reveal information to her.
I've always liked musicals and I think these songs are all really catchy and entertaining to listen too and are definitely the most unique. For your case, they 'suck you out' of the scene because your not used to it. From all the musicals I've listened too, nothing has gave me joy than the songs in Hazbin Hotel. I really wish you can see and experience the same love and aspiration i feel for this series.
Yeah, it seems like a lot of people who watched HB before kinda get thrown a bit with the music here; Helluva Boss _has_ musical numbers, Hazbin Hotel _is a musical._ People dealing with their problems and conflicts through song is just something that happens in stories like this, and if you're not prepared for it, it's a little... unusual. As Ryan here just found out 😏
Yeah I'm not 100% sure it's because Im not used to it. It was super common in Disney/cartoon movies when I was growing up. I've never been able to get into them. I do wonder if it's just a taste thing. I really do want to enjoy it like you guys but that certain feeling just doesn't come up when watching sadly. Thanks for the comment Jett
I actually think that is part of why I enjoy it so much. It reminds me of the good old animated disney movies with a bunch songs in them. But in a less family freindly context. @@livedeadman It really is just a taste thing. It literally is only a matter of suspension of disbelief, and its just different for everyone. If its just classical musical stuff so if youre really not into it, thats fine.
That being said, i hope you can actually pay more attention next time, because like it or not, the songs are great ways to explore the character's feelings in a different way and at times, like with this, also move the story along and such, so just tuning out and talking while the song goes on just hurts your enjoyment of the entire show, not just of the song itself. Its not your cup of tea, but its still part of the experience so you might as well enjoy it however you can.

I ain't saying you should like them, I just want you to not blank out because you will miss out on so much.
Fun fact: In Helluva Boss Episode 5, the one where Striker is first introduced, Moxxie calls Striker's sniper rifle a "Genuine Carmine-Crafted Blessing-Tiped Rifle:, and in this episode, the overlord who you said looks like Vaggie's mom is named Carmilla Carmine, and is quoted as being the top weapons dealer in Hell, meaning that the gun Striker had was made by her. Also, it's explicitly stated in Helluva Boss that only weapons made by her can kill demon royalty and sinners permanently.

To be more precise, particularly powerful demons like Alastor can permanently kill weaker souls. In terms of weapons, it's angelic steel that's the key to killing royalty and sinners. Carmine has an effective monopoly on recovering angelic weapons left behind after exterminations and then recycling the steel into other sorts of armaments like that rifle.
The reason Alastor has a deer motif is because he was shot by a hunter mistaking him for a deer and then died in life. He also eats deer because he’s a cannibal and is friends with them.
There's something really funny about Ryan almost missing the fact that Carmilla killed the angel because it was mentioned in the two songs that he wasn't that interested in.
Also regarding the musical thing, I personally am a fan of *some* musicals. I don't exactly seek them out, but I do enjoy it when the song is good. That being said, I also didn't really get that "feeling" that I've seen others get from Vaggie and Carmilla's song. I just kinda sat there thinking "well, I'm sure someone probably likes this so good for them". One thing I do applaud the series for is the fact that it does have very diverse music, so you aren't stuck listening to one genre you don't really care for. I personally enjoyed the other song quite a bit (despite the fact that Velvette is a little shit) but that just comes down to personal preference.

Vaggie`s voice isn`t meant to be a true monotone, rather it`s a repressed, traumatized person struggling to open up to people and trust again after being betrayed and disappointed so many times fer the sake of her partner but you`ll find that out soon enough.
Considering Lilith rose up Hell through her singing and song, it makes some in-universe sense that everyone might sing her and there.

Just to be clear, in her part of the song Carmilla does infact indicate she killed the angel

They did explain in Episode 1 when Charlie was reading from her storybook that Lilith used her songs to help guide and shape all of Hell, so in a way the singing makes sense since Charlie's mom literally used music to somehow help create Hell as it exists now. Hell is, for lack of a better way to put it, a musical. Also, since the songs kind of took you out of thigs, the two girls Carmilla was protecting weren't just her assistants, they were her daughters. That's what made her willing to fight and kill an angel to protect them. And yes, according to the established lore, Alastor is a cannibal and was both a cannibal and serial killer in life as well. I think Velvet's line she's the backbone of the Vs is quite true she was able bait Camille into that scuffle summs up her character really well, she frustrated her enough to get all information she needed . She annoys people intentionally to get the right response from others.
Like how Vox says Alastor the past Velvet is the future with the net so Vox is the past too

I dunno if anyone has mentioned this yet, but Zestial's (spider man) voice actor is Ozzie from Helluva Boss. Just a fun fact!
I think it has to do with levels of synesthesia and how much you feel when met with music or art. You know how some music videos have little segments before the song explaining a bit of the context? Think of a musical like several of those string together with one overarching plot and suddenly becomes a whole lot more bearable. It also becomes more bearable when you understand the rules of musicals and how one is supposed to be written. It follows the strength of the emotion and the scene. You start off with talking until the emotions rise to singing and when singing is not enough, you dance. And that is very basically theater. I get how it can be jarring and it was jarring for me too but it's like learning a new language. Once you get immersed and how people communicate in a musical you get pretty used to it through reading some of the comments I understand that you never have though and that's understandable. As for why the actors had to be Broadway and might have been to avoid something like cats 2019 where a lot of famous actors and actresses were picked with no regard for their actual talent with only one Broadway tap dancer being hired and his number being the best in the show. Also Vaggie's voice actress is mirabel from encanto, just thought you'd find that interesting.
As for my opinion: I've heard better. The songs aren't necessarily great. Almost every one has some sort of lyrical issue. There are a few songs that I feel aren't good in English but are actually fantastic and other languages. The last song I think was pretty decently paced when it comes to The entrance as the scene is quiet and therefore it starts quieter. You haven't heard it yet but the song 'loser baby' while good in terms of environment, pacing, and instrumental quality as well as the quality of the voice actors, I consider the lyrics to be at least a little bit trash. As for why zestral doesn't really sing in 'respectless' It might actually be because of a certain technique used by opera singers to not wear out their voice where some will go entire operas without technically singing. When you're a professional singer in something like Broadway you care a lot about your voice and less about the emotion. My brother is an opera singer and every time I play any music that has anything short of strict vocals that basically cradle the vocal cords of the singer I can see him wincing. Since zestral's line wasn't that long It's likely to preserve his voice and not take away from the spotlight velvets VA had, he refrained from really singing. He also had an uncomfortable amount of effects on his voice and they could have gotten a voice actor with a lower pitch to make him more mysterious which I thought would fit better but seeing as you like the character you might think differently.

It doesn't make sense to you? In episode one Charlie states directly that her mom empowered demon kind with her voice and her songs, people just going into singing could very easily be made sense of if we keep that into account

But seriously, we don't need a reason as to why people sing in a show that's written to have musical elements to it.
Adding a reason for the musical to exist doesn't enhance the story and could easily lead to plot holes.
Calling Ryan out, saying him thinking people randomly starting to sing is weird, just sounds like you are trying to get upset at nothing in my opinion.
Even if you would be right... you expect people to think this is such an obvious thing that everyone caught on a first time watch or even cared enough about it to consider the meaning?

Generally if you're going to make a complaint about anything, you have to actually make sure your complaint is valid. That's like me watching a movie. Not paying attention to the plot for the first 30 minutes, then complain that the characters are doing dumb stuff... But if I'd paid any attention to the plot, instead of making complaints that aren't valid. I'd understand why the characters are doing what they do.

Okay so then why do they sing... saying because Lilith empowered people with song still does not explain why they have to sing... and it's not a good explanation either.
So they just sing, becsuse backstory character did it and it made them powerful.
Singing itself has had no reason to exist outside of it being a musical, saying, "but uhm actually they all sing because backstory character" is a justificarion, not a reason.
And besides, like I said... there doesn't need to be a reason for a musical production to have songs.
That is like a fantasy story justifying why it has to have magical elements, no duh of course it has.
Getting on Ryan's case for not caring if a backstory character from the first episode is responsible for people singing is very dumb to me. Not everyone remembers every unnecessary world building detail and considering this is not even a relevant thing about the story why should he or anyone care.
I'm sure you watched the episode multiple times and several channels pointing out these little details... but I after watching 15+ reactions to this have not seen one person say, oh isn't it so fun and interesting that every character sings because of Lilith, look at this fun world building detail, if you have someone react to it and point it out as the obvious detail that it is, I'd be happy to see it.
But as it stands you just sound like you expect others to overanalyze every sentence of the show as if most people don't watch a show simply to enjoy the story.

That’s the tricky thing with BDSM. In healthy BDSM relationships, it’s actually the Sub partner who sets the terms of everything. They decide how far the game goes, and when it ends. It’s…complicated.
I feel like the songs wrap me into the story more. I find it interesting that this aspect can pull some out and bring others in.
Also some songs have crucial info so maybe read the subtitles during those parts particularly during the second song in ep 6. The songs are baked into the story so subtitles might help.
So yeah the music does start off more jarring than immersive. But it starts to catch its pace by episode 4 and then it serves as catharsis.
I like how the egg boys' whole vibe makes the viewer think at the start "oh boy, these poor guys are doomed", but not only do they all survive, they actually perform their assigned tasks with more competence than anyone would have expected.
I mean this IS a Musical so it would be weird for there to not be music in it.

I'm pretty sure they would have waited with revealing who killed the angel if Amazon gave them more episodes. Like, i like the show, but it's short runtime of only 8 22min episodes did not help its pacing. It's kinda sad actually, like, I'd loved it if we had some more "filler" stuff, the show could benifit from it when it comes to keeping some stuff hidden for longer and over-all relationship building. Like we have a sense of the main cast's personality and relationships, but they never get the chance to actually shine.
If It had more episodes, I'd prolly have changed it like this:
Ep 1: Pilot recap/promotion plot from ep 1
Ep 2: Charlie visiting Adem, a sideplot of the main characters just kind of interacting with each other
Ep 3: Ep 2's Alastor and Vox plot. I think it's an interesting rivery and i wish we had some more of the Vee's characters. We could have some Sir Pentious stuff in the background but i wouldn't let him join yet.
Ep 4: Sir Pentious joining the cast and the whole "trust exercises' stuff. The Overlord meeting could be included in here too, though the reveal of who killed the angel shouldn't be done yet.
Ep 5 (gonna keep stuff vague bc idk how far ahead you've watched and I don't wanna spoil): Basically the plot of ep 4
Ep 6: another backseater or "filler" episode, as the last one was quite heavy. I guess just a waky adventure plot would be good where the main cast learns the values of friendship, idk, just some more main cast development. Maybe they could find out who killed the angel in this ep
EP 7: The plot of the original Episode 5
EP 8: The very beginning of Ep 6 and then a focus on the Angel Dust and co sideplot from that episode (so none of Charlie's stuff from that episode after the very beginning)
EP 9: the Charlie plot from ep 6
EP 10: again, a bit of a back seater, maybe include a part of ep 7's plot but not all. Or maybe include the reveal of the Angel killer here
EP 11: the main junk of ep 7
EP 12: the original plot from ep 8

In musicals, the general unspoken rule of thumb is that a song should begin when words aren't enough to convey they emotions the characters are feeling. Just like music outside of a musical, its a way to express yourself in a more grand way than just plain old dialogue. You're not the first person to not like musicals because of a feeling of emersion breaking, it isn't really something that could ever plausibly exist outside of fiction.
That being said, I personally like musicals because i find music to be a great tool for invoking big emotions as well as being fun to listen to, and i like those more fantastical elements in fiction BECAUSE they cant exist in real life. but it definitely is a taste thing, which is completely fine. though i hope you can come to appreciate some of the songs even outside of the show's context because they are really well made and pretty catchy

When you commented on Zestials voice regarding the broadway actor aspect I bursted out laughing actually! Because Zestials voice actor is James Monroe Iglehart who voices Asmodeus and Tex in Helluva Boss! Also I personally LOVE the musical aspect although I’ve never been a musical kid growing up, I guess for me it’s the echolalia from my autism but I’ve had the songs stuck in my head ever since the series aired

I am not a musical guy by any means. I hate most musicals. But I like them in this show. I mean, the songs are so good. That's just my opinion, but yeah. It doesn't bother me how the songs are all random. The lyrics always fit the actual scene and if you can find a way to not cringe because you recognize the singing being random/inexplicable, then you are kinda solid.
Now that I have watched the whole video, I am editing this paragraph in. What the musicals add to the show for me, as per your question, is that they are just banger songs. It doesn't personally bother me that people are engaging in simple conversation but instead of talking, they are singing. And when that doesn't bother me, well I am just left with banger songs at that point. They are not really emotional for me, I don't think they are beautiful or some shit. I just like em.

I personally enjoy musicals, especially when song is used for certain stuff like fighting or information dumps, makes it more entertaining imo and when trying to convey strong emotions sometimes song makes it a lot more fun agian or more impactful imo. Bold of a mlp and cartoon fan in general to call musicals a immersion breakers when we all know that thats what the show is about and we know that in story they are singing since character acknowladge that. I see it less as a immersion break and more as a "omg a new song this is gonna be great" and well show of power from wichever character is singing

Another great reaction, Ryan! I love all the jokes and edits (especially with you pretending to be part of the egg boy’s group and smelling sir pentious’s butt 😂 ). It’s okay though if you’re not a musical fan, I understand. Everyone in my family dislikes musicals except for me, but even I’m a little picky when comes to musicals (I despise high school musical with all my soul). But I’m glad to see you’re trying, and if it makes you feel any better, that while I love all the songs in this show, the last song in episode 3 is one of my least favorites. Some of the other songs in future episodes do have important plot points though, so if it makes it easier, you can put the subtitles on during the songs if you want.
Also, don’t apologize for not making a lot of jokes next episode…believe me, I think most of us understand just how serious episode 4 is. While episode 4 and 5 are my two favorite episodes, they both hit you pretty hard in the feels (for different reasons of course).

Also it's more of a "subjective" than an "objective" thing, especially considering when you're asking what we "think". And subjectively speaking, I like the music because it breaks up the regularity of it, and it feels refreshing. Plus, it adds more oomph to the moment, and, honestly, the music in Hazbin is pretty good.
Plus, I think part of the line not being sung so well is probably because it's just that one dang line and there isn't really a chance for the singing to improve, and it's so... different, from the voices around him that it's just jarring, but, tbh, listening to it, I didn't mind. If he sounds like a pterodactyl, then man, pterodactyls must've sounded pretty good back in ye olde days.
I mean - this is a musical. So, erm...arguably... there is no need to bring up the "oh, they're randomly bursting into music" jokes more than once...
I disagree with you one musical numbers being bad though I understand its a preference thing. I do agree with you on the crunchy peanut butter being for psychos though. I've thought of them as a choking hazard. Also yes Camelia said she killed the angel.
I don’t get the immersion break to be honest, it’s a cartoon show about demons and angels. There has to be suspension of disbelief here to enjoy the show. You are already suspending your disbelief to watch a fictional cartoon show, so to me to do it for the musicals too is easy.
She is a social media demon, like how Alastor is radio and Vox is TV and Val is porn, it makes perfect sense for her to say “hash tag bxtch” and all that because her powers represents it.
It'd be hilarious if Vaggie was Carmilla's grandmother or something like that.

I personally like the musical aspect of the show, I don't think it's immersion-breaking if you consider the songs and dances are just a normal thing people do in the world.
ive recommended that to my friend who also doesn't like musicals (or any songs w plot...ugh): maybe subtitles on the songs will make it easier to follow?

Regarding your take on the music within the show, I will say that I like most of the songs independently, but I agree that the beginnings of them are sometimes extremely abrupt, almost like a slap in the face. This likely serves to ensure that the two songs per episode quota are met. Though this show is considered to be an animated musical, I don't feel that it's necessary to try to force a song in suddenly or at all just to keep on brand with the musical aspect. Anyways, your videos always make me laugh, and thank you for doing what you do!
Honestly in my opinion the songs are good but as part of an episode they usually don't make sense, I can understand why you react to them like that

Ok im kinda glad you brought up the musical aspect here cuz this episode isnt my favorite in regards to the pacing between plot and songs;
I actually really like Respectless, Velevette's VA is awesome and i love it. I think that song at least fits, shes making a huge scene to sniff out who killed the angel and it works. Is it jarring? A bit, but i like the song so i can excuse it.
But Whatever It Takes? Ugggghhh I know people like it but I'm sorry I DOOOONT. Like this is a major plot development, holy crap this lady killed the angel and as a result got the extermination moved up. This is big stuff FOR GODS SAKE JUST HAVE A CONVERSATION. I might be better with it if it was just a Vaggie solo; soeaking if which, Idk it might just be me but i dint think the two voices melded that well? Vaggie is just really quiet and i know this girl can sing louder.
That was the only time i ever really just...skimmed thru a sing in this series and felt the immersion break.
I still enjoyed the series and a lot of the songs, but this episode isnt high on my list (exceot the Alastor and Pentious scenes, theyre great XD)
base on lilith starting hell thru songs and incarragment yes i can see a world highly based on music. alot more then ours. because lets be honest song is far more entertaining then watching some one talk.

Musicals are fun but I have noticed that has been has an issue with song just happening out of nowhere. The song's are great but they just have to work on easing into them. I personally love the way the second song in episode 4 happens. It's not like how Carmella just started singing at full blast for really no reason besides the mandatory song as you said. Episode 1 had the same issue with Charlie just cutting off Vaggy mid sentence to sing Happy Day in hell. Can't wait to the rest of your reactions to the season!

NIFFTY RULES
I’m a big musical fan, and while I often listen to these songs, I’ll admit that Hazbin uses its songs as a crutch at times. Songs are supposed to show the built up emotion of a character, but we JUST met the killer of the angel (Karmila) and she suddenly has a whole song? (With Vaggie, for no reason other than having simular issues.). Hazbin can make amaizing musicales, but man I think they bit off more than they could chew. (2 songs an episode was to much I feel). Helluva, despite its flaws, uses its songs better. Often haveing them take place near the end of an episode as a finally-pay off that the episode was building to. Instead of just using the song in place of build up.
Vaggie is Mirabel from Encanto so probably doesn't do the voice well.

The songs are plot relevant, you can’t just ignore them or talk over them or you’ll miss stuff. Personally I love the songs so it’s a pity you don’t! But yes they have important plot points so you will need to pay attention to them and if you for some reason can’t understand what they are saying when they are singing just turn on the subtitles.
